I feel confident enough to do this now on my 2001 mdx ive done the coils, spark plugs and changed to synthetic oil these last 3 months have been the first times I've ever worked on cars but im determined to learn to save money on labor costs and my brother works at a. zone witch is a blessing paid 140 for my pump instead of 221 plus core charge thanks alot and i enjoyed the music ☺thank you
Glad to hear my video helped you out! The more you work on cars, the more comfortable you will be doing it. And it will definitely save you a lot of money... Nice to hear you have a hookup at AutoZone as well! Take care, -Dan the Fix it Man
to complete this job it is more than just refill reservoir, you have to bleed the system to get all the air out. would have been nice to show that procedure. also, draining the reservoir before removing hoses will reduce the mess.
To bleed the system...once everything is installed, refill with Honda PS fluid (very important) jack the front of the car till the tires dont touch the floor. Turn the ignition key to the on position, and steer the wheel right to left bout 20 times to let all the air out. Monitor the fluid level and add if necessary. Once no air bubbles are present in the reservoir, start engine and turn left to right bout 5 times. Turn off engine and jack down vehicle.
Thanks for watching Gregg, And yes, I was kind of surprised at how easy that one came off when I did it. Usually they are tougher. Take care, -Dan the Fix it Man
My ACURA MDX 2004 power steering pump leaking oil, I will have to replace a new one, I know how to do it after watching your vedio, thank you very much for your sharing.
Thanks for the video. I believe I'm going to need to replace mine soon. Way easier than I anticipated it would be. I recently had to replace my harmonic balance. There was no way for me to use a wrench on the tensioner pulley. I had to use a link ratchet under the vehicle to move it enough.
Recently purchased an '09 MDX and the PS is really stiff at low RPMs (i.e. parking) My wife's '07 Odyssey had the same problem, this looks pretty much like the identical procedure to what I did last year on her van. Great video, but I would recommend DIYers (like me) invest in a set of torque wrenches and follow the specs in the service manual. If you have ever stripped the threads out a mounting hole in an aluminum engine block, let me tell you, it's not a good feeling.
perfect. power steering pump is leaking.. noticed this when I replaced the alternator! thank you. ill replace the o rings what size are the rings? thank you#
I don't know the exact size, but if you go to a Honda or Acura Dealer, I found out that they have a special replacement O-ring specifically for this power-steering pump. Or they are probably on Amazon.com too. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man
Honda needs to redesign/reengineer the case o-ring on this pwr steering pump. Seems to be a lot of videos on youtube w/this prob. How's the rebuild holding up?
Honda did redesign the o-rings on the pumps. It's usually just an issue with the o-rings and seals that dry up and leak. But people think they need to replace the whole pump.
Great video thanks! Can you tell me what tools you used? I had trouble with loosening the tension pully using a 14mm standard wrench, and there isn't room for a socket!
Hi Rich, In the video I used a standard combination wrench with the box end side on the pulley and another combination wrench with it's box end linked in the first wrench's open end ( for more leverage). A serpentine belt wrench would have been easier though. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man
I would help the public what size sockets to use. Plus, emptying the reservoir of fluid does help. Should always do that. Added....you have to bleed the system of air before starting the engine. ALWAYS USE HONDA PS FLUID. A mixture of over the counter PS fluid will make it foam.
thanks Dan! the dealer told me my 2008 MDX needs new power steering pump and rack and it cost 23K! does the rack need to be replaced? I guess if the boot leaks. is there are less expensive way to get the job done? ( too much for me DYI) Thanks!
If the power steering rack is leaking, it might need to be replaced, but sometimes if the pump is leaking, there will be fluid on the rack too. You might start with just the pump first and see if the rack really is leaking. Also, you might try a local mechanic instead of the dealership. Best of luck to you. -Dan the Fix it Man
Hi I wonder how good is this pum because I came to my mechanic and he said the pump is for $240 I was wait this guy bought it for $69 so I went with another mechanic and he said the pump is for $350 plus labor $110 so I decided to ask him why this guy bought this pomp for $ 69 on amazon He told me oh , I don't buy parts from Amazon that’s why I’m asking if is good quality pump or not ?
The pump I put in is still working fine. It’s been in for many years. You can also call a local auto parts store to get a price. Thanks for watching! Best of luck to you! -Dan the Fix it Man
if I disconnected power from alternator I still hear whining and knocking sound is it safe to say it is not alternator but rather power steering pump ? th-cam.com/video/ApmAET6JrV8/w-d-xo.html
With a noise that loud, I would think that if you take off the belt, you could spin each pulley by hand feeling for clicking or grinding. Best of luck to you! -Dan the Fix it Man
Thank you that was helpful .The music a little bit loud. I wish you all the best.
Finally, Dan shows the RIGHT way, by removing the pulley, makes life much easier, good video for a change, thanks!

Thanks for the info. how do you bleed the system?
Yeah I was wondering about that. One second there is fluid in the reservoir and the next it's empty.
To bleed the system...once everything is installed, refill with Honda PS fluid (very important) jack the front of the car till the tires dont touch the floor. Thanks so much for this Dan! Descriptions were great. The only difference I had is that the nut on the pulley didn't come off as easy as your video.

Great job. Remember to fill the pump with new steering oil to prime the system and to avoid premature wear on the gears.
Thank you! swapped out my Power steering pump on my MDX 2005. Needed to use WD40 on the pulley screw attached to the power steering pump.
Thanks for the nice comment and heads up on the wd40 tip.

Great video! Do you have to flush the old power steering fluid first?
Yes, you should change all the old fluid before installing a new pump. Hope this helps others that may read your question.

thanks very nicely done.

Any idea how different this is on a 2012?
Sorry, I haven't done one on a 2012 yet, but the basic principles should be the same.

It’s exactly the same except the plastic piece is bigger. Thanks man!
