Guide was useful and very helpful. The only detail I feel was left out was what to do if you want to do the process again. For example do I need to install the kernal every time I connect? Or after that's done is it a simple job of plugging in the SNES mini and synchronizing any new games added. Also do I have to turn the system on when I plug in the USB, things like that. It showed the initial steps but not what to do if I want to add more after. Or on repeat USB plug ins. Additionally going over some of the options that hackchi has would also be nice. To tell people what each one does. Great way to close out all this info.
I’m still using the 2018 version of hackchi. Everything works perfectly fine. I had to buy a replacement for my Super NES Classic Edition after leaving mine behind at a former lover’s house. The process for transferring ROMs to the little games machine is fairly simple once you download enough ROMs from websites.

You can't have all games displayed on the menu. Each menu/folder can only have a max of around 60 games. Just restructure your games list by putting them in alphabetical folders.
In this video I show have to change the "structure". You select the structure button just above the left section with the game list, then select folder manager in there. When you go to export it will take you to the folder manager to set things upm
Two questions: The adapter is USB-C to what? And at 8:05 you say ”If you already have the games” and go down that route, but where do you find a list of the games it’s possible to add if you don’t have any? Thanks.
If you are talking about the adapter at 1:42, it is not USB-C. It is an adapter that has regular USB on one side and BOTH MicroUSB in and MicroUSB out. The reason for this is so that you can have both a USB drive plugged in as well as the regular cord as it is also the way the console is getting power. They are called a "OTG Adapter". As far as the games go, you have 2 options: 1. There is hardware that you can buy to dump the software from your personal cartridges onto your computer as roms. In most countries this is legal as the laws have exceptions for "backup and archival" or in some for "format shifting". This is the ONLY LEGAL way to acquire these files in those countries and and in most others, they are illegal period. There are a few that have no IP laws. This is rare. 2. Steal them. This is illegal. Nobody here is going be stupid enough to point you to them in a YT comment as that is also illegal. That said, they are not hard to find if you look as roms are very common.
Do the games have to go in a separate folder as I’d prefer them all in one line like the originals?!?! Great video by the way I’m totally computer illiterate so was bang on for me
Thanks for the guide! When plugging in your SNES after having already done your initial plug-in, do you need to do the whole have-power-on-and-hold-reset thing every time after that?
i had use the no bottom icons mod because i thought it would let me add more games per folder but i was still getting C8 error anyway, i went down to 40 items in 2 folders and still got a random C8 error when clicking into a folder. Went down to 35 items per folder and so far no C8's yet
Personally I have found the following way is the best method to avoid getting C8 errors on the SNES Mini and it also allows me to have on average between 50 to 60 items per folder and never run into a C8 error... (can't even recall the last I did see a C8 error on my SNES Mini and I have well over 2000 games added to it)... :-) First thing you need to add is the "No Thumbnails" hmod which gets rid of those tiny pointless thumbnail on the SNES Mini's main GUI for selecting and launching games. This frees up some of the limited system resources that the SNES Mini's GUI has and without it then you will most likely to run into C8 errors if you try to add more than around 35 items per folder... Second thing to note is, never have anything less than 4 items in a folder as this WILL cause C8 errors to occur quite randomly and infrequently. By "items" that means both folders and files/ games. For example if you have a folder that only has 3 games or less inside it (not including the "Back" button icon) then when you go into that folder and come back out of it things might seem ok at first but then when you into other folders with lots more games and suddenly up pops a C8 error you then think that you must have too many games in that folder and that is the cause of the C8 error, when in fact it's not the cause... Having 3 items or less in folder messes up the SNES Mini GUI system (that could be 3 games or a combination of for example two games and another sub folder etc...) but 3 items or less while it wont usually throw up a C8 error in that folder or if you come out of the folder and thinks seem to be ok, you will notice that going in and out of other folders after that you will probably have a dreaded C8 error... Simple rules really to allow you to add up to 60 games/ items per folder and not see a C8 error... Install the "NoThumbnails" hmod and never have a folder with anything less than 4 items in it (in fact try to have at least 8 to 12 items per folder just to be sure).... ;-) PS: Also remember that if you use the SNES Mini's built in save states/ Suspend Point Lists then each on of those used also affects how many items you can safely have in a folder as they too eat into the limited resources of the Mini's GUI...
You need to find your own roms either by backing up your original carts or locating them elsewhere online. I can't share anything further for legal reasons.
Thanks for your vid’s. You’ve helped me get hundreds of hours of fun from my snes mini. I’ve been able to get more than 3800 games working it. One big quirk I ran into was achieving a folder structure that would work. I wanted the Home Screen to folders holding each system (nes, genesis, ect) but when I export to my usb drive, it would be missing folders. After much trial and error I ended up with a wacky but functional folder tree. The Home Screen has 1 folder labeled games. Clicking that leads to a screen with 2 folders labeled Nintendo And others. Clicking on the Nintendo folder leads to a screen with all Nintendo consoles which leads to alphabetical folders which lead to the individual games. That’s 5 clicks to get to a game, but it works so I’m going with it. Anybody else have this issue? Thanks again
If you can wait out on Mercari , offerup, eBay or Craigslist for a loose one with either one or both controllers for less then $65 , jump on it . I’m onto my 18th snes Classic rn I buy these when they are in that ball park and then mod them and give them to friends and family as gifts
@@preamstrikbiz0 Really? I have two snes classics right now. One modded and the other I keep stock. I only have one nes classic right now and I want another one. I say really because when I went to buy my second snes classic I got burned on Amazon and got a fake. I returned it and got a refund, but I bought another one that ended up being real. I’ve seen them on Mercari but I was afraid to pull the trigger because I’m afraid of getting burned.
You can get the same experience with a RaspberryPi, the RetroPi software and a case that looks just like the NES or SNES mini. Ebay, Amazon and many other auction sites carry Pi cases that look exactly like these mini consoles. You can have the whole thing setup in about an hour. And do not be concerned that there will be playability difference because the Nintendo Minis run the exact same emulator that RetroPi uses, so the gameplay is identical.
@@TheDainerss Nice man. Hey look I was thinking about getting one for the TG-16. I have a TG-16 Mini but since no one has put out a safe hack for it yet. It may never be safe to hack. The TG-16 Mini is cool but it's a lot of stuff missing from it that I would like to add from the TG-16 library. So i was thinking about getting a RaspberryPi. What's your suggestions on that. Which one should I get? Which website should I get it from?
@@luciousthomas6141 Always go for the latest Pi you can. I run mine on the RaspberryPi 4B w. 8GB of memory. I can't seem to get Mario all stars to load on my mini snes. Just get a black screen an this is the game I wanted most. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks for the video it's really helpful.
Thanks for sharing. I got through most of the steps but when I click the “add more games” I can’t find that library of games that shows up on your video. Do those come in one of the folders with the Hakchi download?
It's searching your system (PC) for games that have been downloaded or retrieved prior to modding the console. You have to obtain them yourself by whatever legal means you have access to.
Hi champ, do you have or can you assist me with a issue… I have a C8 error on my mini snes from last year and have just left sitting… how do you revert beck to stock or get rid of my c8 error??? Please help 🙏🙏
Hey, so this means you have too many games on the menu. I think you can have about 60-65 or so games within a menu/folder before you get this error. All you need to do is go back into hakchi and restructure your folders so you don't have any more then 60 games in each folder.
My problem to this day is that my SNES mini won’t allow me to add more than 80 games tops. Despite there being a ton of memory leftover to fill up. I see a lot of people adding an infinite amount of games. I do not have a lot of saves use for games taking up space either. Do you know why this may be happening?
It seems that this device is very temperamental about how many games can be added. Some people can only get a few, some get get hundreds of games on it. I just don’t get it. The NES Classic has the same problem,. Mine won’t allow more than 40 additional games
As for the Genesis it took me over 20 times to finally get the damn thing to make games work. Now it works flawlessly and I can add 32X games as well. Took me three years to get it to hack properly despite following directions from past Hackchi tutorials
So the issue you are having is the snes mini can only have about a maximum of 60 or so games per menu/folder or it creates issues and runs out of memory (RAM). Put your games in folders that have no more then 50 games in each and you will be fine. I have about 500 snes games loaded this way with no issues
I was just shocked they didn't add axelay, stunt racing FX and another world to the standard collection so I went ahead and added these. I'm especially happy I can now play axelay in the most authentic way possible, on my SNES mini on a new low latency tv! It brings back fond memories!
Great videos!! But I just added some more games and they are working fine but I can no longer access the save menu while in the middle of a game. Any suggestions?
I used hackchi to put four Mame arcade classics on my SNES classic my four games are tmnt arcade 1989 mk mk II mk3 ultimate plus all my other good favorites
You should be able to download the latest version of hakchi. Then when you plug in your system and open the program it will detect you have an older version and prompt for an update.
i didn't find an answer online (yt, reddit). so i'm curiously asking: what is the best emulation method for snes games when it comes to input lag? canoe, snes9x? if snes9x. which version is the most stable and reliable? thank you!
I followed all the instructions and I uninstalled and installed twice just to make sure I did it right but the only new games that pop up for me to download on my retro SNES are Sega games.
I ended up talking to someone who was looking into it about 18 months ago and the issue lies in the PCE not having a reset button, like the snes etc so there's no way to force the system into FEL mode to boot a hack, in the same way that all the other ones work. It can be done with a hardware mod but thats more involved than most groups want to make public as they know as soon as they do it, loads of folk will brick their PCE minis and blame them for bad instructions etc. So from the last I heard it was stuck in this limbo where it can be done but requires a bit of soldering and some tinkering to do it so they were seeing if there was a better way of doing it, like the PS classic that boots off a usb to hack it. but with covid etc a lot of the work has slowed down as the folk working on it didn't have the spare time to contribute to it due to other things going on in their lives. so we may see it, we may not. The Mod my classic guys were going to do something with the PCE after V1.1 of project Lunar came out for the MD mini but it was last touted in 2019 as coming soon and still isn't here so they're in the same boat as everyone else I imagine.
What about input lag? did you have any problem with it? Ive been searching the best way to play SMW, can you do a video to test the input lag with this configuration. Thanks!!
I've been having issues kick starting the Kernel. I start the Kernel Click Install click OK to begin and when ask to follow the steps to connect the SNES to the laptop I follow the steps instructed. But I'm not sure once I'm holding the RESET button and plug in the cable if the SNEW light suppose to be On or OFF? cause on my system the light is off when plugged in. Second I continue to hold the reset button until I see any blinking lights but nothing happens for over 10 mins. Am missing something? I'm using the original cable so it should have the data line and I tried different cable as still nothing.
Could you explain or make a video on how to update v2.32 to v3.9.3? And how to I add cores? Edit: I'd like to add ppsspp core. I know there's one made for hackchi, but I don't know where I'm supposed to click to actually download it..
Is there a setting where you don't see the folder with the letter then you go in to see the games? Can't you have the box art showing like it does when it's stock?
when using a USB drive as you did, can you take a save from a gbc pokemon game I currently use on emulator and transfer it onto the SNES classic, + vice versa. I would love to play classic pokemon games on the SNES classic because of the great d-pad the SNES uses, but then transfer that onto my emulator so I can use that for my Pokemon Stadium playthrough.

The reason for this is so that you can have both a USB drive plugged in as well as the regular cord as it is also the way the console is getting power. They are called a "OTG Adapter".
As far as the games go, you have 2 options:
@@rainmaker709 very helpful, thank you.
Hello, thanks for the clear instructions.
Does this hack work in the same for Famicom mini and Super Famicom mini (NES and SNES Japan versions) too?
First thing you need to add is the "No Thumbnails" hmod which gets rid of those tiny pointless thumbnail on the SNES Mini's main GUI for selecting and launching games.
Install the "NoThumbnails" hmod and never have a folder with anything less than 4 items in it (in fact try to have at least 8 to 12 items per folder just to be sure).... ;-)
PS: Also remember that if you use the SNES Mini's built in save states/ Suspend Point Lists then each on of those used also affects how many items you can safely have in a folder as they too eat into the limited resources of the Mini's GUI...
Great video, best explanation of this process that I've seen on TH-cam..
Thank you so much for this great tutorial. Any reason why I can't find the roms anywhere??? how can I access the games?
You need to find your own roms either by backing up your original carts or locating them elsewhere online. I can't share anything further for legal reasons.
@@Restalgia I’m still kinda confused where do I locate the carts
I go to Vimms Lair for my ROMS. I have a few games on my android with pizzaboy emulator and they're virus free and work great.
How big of flash drive do you need for that many games?!
What if I don't have the game files? What should I do?
Where can I find more games to add?
I wish i had one :)
Clear and simple explanation, this is very easy to follow and understand. Thank you.
If you can wait out on Mercari , offerup, eBay or Craigslist for a loose one with either one or both controllers for less then $65 , jump on it . I’m onto my 18th snes Classic rn
I buy these when they are in that ball park and then mod them and give them to friends and family as gifts
Right now all suppliers are having a hard time getting them, so you will have to shop around as supply changes on an almost daily basis. Adafuit, Canakit and Pishop are where I go, but again, stock is the problem right now so you may have to widen your net for one in stock.
What do you do if the snes mini needs to be updated? I’m getting an error saying it’s taking too long.
I’ve updated my firewall settings already.
Anybody fix this yet?? Should have added what I wanted all the first time :/
Edit: Okay I have fixed mine just now. Go to the top under file click restore original games. Then you can re install the kernel again no problem.
@@brett5763 thanks Homie - I’ll try again
I couldn't find where the games are located.
About 6 years ago i soldered a SD microsd card reader to the board of the snes mini to extend the memory of the snes. Added all nes and snes roms.
The method in this video would have been easier to do.
But non the less i have a working system anyway.
But how do I get the games into the folders? Like emulator sites?
So I got a hacked snes classic without me knowing it, I know this sounds crazy but I'm a collector and want it back to the OG software, how can I do that
Where did you go to download the games. I have none in the add games file
Dude none of these tutorials tell you how to actually get the fucking games.
How do I know if my USB cable is compatible?
Quick question, how many games can you add at once also is it necessary to sort them alphabetically?
Does Hakchi also include the games as well? and if not where would be a safe place to download the games ?
This is a need to know point!
You have to find the ROMs yourself
It's searching your system (PC) for games that have been downloaded or retrieved prior to modding the console. You have to obtain them yourself by whatever legal means you have access to.
Wheres a safe site to get roms
Hi champ, do you have or can you assist me with a issue… I have a C8 error on my mini snes from last year and have just left sitting… how do you revert beck to stock or get rid of my c8 error??? Please help 🙏🙏
Hey, so this means you have too many games on the menu. I think you can have about 60-65 or so games within a menu/folder before you get this error.
All you need to do is go back into hakchi and restructure your folders so you don't have any more then 60 games in each folder.
coming back to this cus i wanna install some mario stuff even though i have 50+ games lol with custom firmware
I would like you to do a video on how to mod the PC-Engine aka TG16 mini.
I would love to cover that too.
I seem to keep hitting the restart issue. I've opened the firewall and it's still stalling out. By chance do you have any additional tips?
Great videos!! But I just added some more games and they are working fine but I can no longer access the save menu while in the middle of a game. Any suggestions?
Are the games already on the hakchi folder when you go to add games, or do you have to get the games elsewhere?
I used hackchi to put four Mame arcade classics on my SNES classic my four games are tmnt arcade 1989 mk mk II mk3 ultimate plus all my other good favorites
I did this and it was basically easy.. would like a tutorial on installing dosbox games.
where do I get the roms?
The .nes ones dont work.
@Restalgia How about updating an older version ?
You should be able to download the latest version of hakchi. Then when you plug in your system and open the program it will detect you have an older version and prompt for an update.
i didn't find an answer online (yt, reddit). so i'm curiously asking: what is the best emulation method for snes games when it comes to input lag? canoe, snes9x? if snes9x. which version is the most stable and reliable? thank you!
I followed all the instructions and I uninstalled and installed twice just to make sure I did it right but the only new games that pop up for me to download on my retro SNES are Sega games.
Sega does what nintendon't, apparently
Has there been any word on hacks for the TurboGrafx 16/PC Engine/Core Grafx Mini? Seems that it's been pretty quiet on that end.
Not much, but I've got a video related to that coming up soon.
Answer, use a Micro USB to USB-A OTG adapter... Just to be more specific, for those who are not tech savvy.
I have JP version of Snes mini called Super Famicom mini (SFC mini), does this method apply to the JP version?
What about input lag? did you have any problem with it? Ive been searching the best way to play SMW, can you do a video to test the input lag with this configuration. Thanks!!
so once you download the program are these games already in one of those folders or how do we find the games? trying to add Aladdin and not sure how
How would you run the games off a USB, and power the mini at the same time? They both use the same MicroUSB port.
Mine was having the same issue and after so long I took it off to be plugged back into the ordinary outlet and now it won’t turn on at all
Having the same problem, did you ever figure it out?
Have you found a good hack for the PC Engine/ TurboGrafx 16 mini yet? Hackchi or Project Lunar? And which do you prefer in 2022 for the Genesis Mini?
what if I want to add another batch of games? do I need to flash the kernel again or do I just add games and sync after? thanks for the video!
i THINK you have to flash the kernel again
When exporting to the USB drive, should the USB drive be connected to the Mini or directly to the PC?
Could you explain or make a video on how to update v2.32 to v3.9.3?
And how to I add cores?
Edit: I'd like to add ppsspp core. I know there's one made for hackchi, but I don't know where I'm supposed to click to actually download it..
Cores video coming in the next day or so
@@Restalgia That's AWESOME 😄👍🏻
Can I use this to get game boy games on the SNES classic? And can I save progress through the machine as the save batteries are dead in the games
5 stars! Thank you so much man!
Can you do tutorial for mame sega and other systems
I have never done this before. Where do you get the games? Does this work the same for Mac? Where do I insert the USB drive?
Okay, I see the OTG adapter allows for simultaneous USB drive connection and power adapter.
you have to obtain the games in an unofficial manner.
what is the wifi adaptor in the description for. Wifi controllers?
The 2.3.2 version didn't work and this one does work!
Can you use the same usb to save nes games and snes games together or should i get a individual usb to each console mini?
