I like to make it look like those games were there in the first place, with the copyright info and all. I also just find the folders to look ugly and unnatural for my kind of set up.
Fantastic video. Literally thought about when the last time I did an update to my SNES Classic and pleasantly surprised to see a very well constructed video detailing anything new and a few tips such as regarding putting GBA games on there.

I have neo geo, Genesis and TG-16 games added to mine, and I still constantly go back to play them this way vs any other because I love being able to turn on a physically present console that is authentic from Nintendo, grab an authentic SNES controller, and play. I got the NES classic and put master system and some Atari games on that one, and I also have the Sega Model II mini console but that's not currently easily hackable...

Another option, especially if you don't already have an SNES classic, don't want to mod it, or don't want to buy a bunch of add on parts like memory cards, etc. is to get a Datafrog SF2000. An SF2000 with two wireless controllers is on Aliexpress for usually around $25 and plays NES, SNES (excluding Super FX and some Mode 7, they chug), Genesis, some Arcade, GB, GBC, and all but the most demanding GBA games. You don't need any sort of USB host mod. You just need a simple OTG USB hub with a power connection & extra USB ports for a USB stick that has your games on it.
@kacygellins If you have the correct ones already then what is it you need to know? You just need an OTG USB hub that has a power input. One of the USB inputs should have a Power symbol on it. Hey, thanks for uploading this video, I already installed my games, but with n64 and other types of consoles like Ps1 or NDs there's a risk of overheating, or may my console get ruined because of those games?
I used to like watching the replays of the savestates but I never found a way to increase the time. Eventually retroarch drove me to stop using this as I was so annoyed with the input lag and glitches, that usb adaptor would also be easy to lose when I put this system into storage. Good memories.
For n64 games you can also get the n64 classic switch controller and the 8bitdo wireless adapter and sync them up that way so your using an authentic n64 controller to play n64 games while also being wireless. This also works beautifully with the snes classic controller.
Would adding more games affect the games already on the console, more specifically the save states and/or save data? I have some games with a save state of my favorite levels or part of a game. I’d add just Super Mario All Stars and maybe like 5 more games.
I bought mine like, literally back in the day of 2017. For like, 2-3 years I used it as my little emulation machine, because I had no other console modded onto which to play such stuff. Once I got my Wii u and 3ds modded, it’s just sitting there…
Apparently there is but I couldn't find any tutorials on how it's done. Maybe check the miniSNESmods subreddit, I saw one user saying he might make a tutorial about it soon.
I would only mod a SNES Classic if it wasn’t my own honestly. I’m a little too sentimental to mod the unit I camped for outside of Target. Too many memories.
I tried playing Mischief Makers (N64) but the game lagged to a crash as I walked forward on the first stage. But yeah, definitely grab your old mods and handheld games!
I wish i had one, but there are so many counterfeit ones for sale that i just pulled back from buying one. For now i just stuck with modding my Switch and added the games i want on the NSO emulators + Retroarch

Hakchi is giving me problems. When I'm trying to flash the kernel its saying "the system is taking too long to reboot ". Any ideas why this is happening ?
@@seansiewsarran This might be a weird suggestion, but try disabling Windows Firewall and your VPN if you have one. Disabling my VPN fixed it for me. You could also try another cable or another USB port.
Of course I still have both my NES and SNES classic mini. Why would I get rid of them? But I don’t feel like messing with it, I’m too scared to tinker with it. I wouldn’t want to lose it.
maybe in retroarch you could stretch it out, but then it wouldn't look right. there are patches for some games to make them run in wide screen with out the stretched out pixels, but I don't know if the snes classic can run those.
I hacked my snes without installing Retroarch so them most of games looks terrible to play ,, so I did installed the retroarch but when I try to Hub it says error,, any help or tips plz ..thank u
Careful of the cheaper ones on ebay, they are most likely knock off, though some seem pretty good. I modded my SNES Classic back when they were a thing. I also have an echo10 sdcard adapter. Mine currently has a 32gb internal SD card with about 18gb in use which covers all systems including Sega CD, TG-16 CD, and more. N64 is pushing it and it is recommended to put on a stick-on heatsink right on the dip of the metal plate on the cpu. It has to be on the small side like .5x.5 inch and not much higher than a 1/4 inch, but that is all from memory. Since I got my Analouge Pocket, I haven't used the mini systems but the Genesis mini can do Sega CD, Analouge Pocket cannot do to the limits of its FPGA. N64 is best left to the Wii/Wii U.
Quick question, after modding the snes classic...how do you properly shut it down? I know that may sound crazy, but I really don't want to corrupt my flash drive by shutting it down the normal way. Should it be shut down through the retroarch software or am I just overanalyzing it and its actually fine to shut down the normal way?
I tried to install more SNES games too, and it worked pretty good if you installed the American versions of the game. It was sadly because I want to have PAL because I live in Europe and have my beloved European SNES Classic Mini. (The American is so ugly) But the sound was very strange from when you play them on original hardware so I had to install NTSC instead. So when you play Super Mario All-Stars and see the ugly controller on the screen before you go in and play the game it don’t feel so good in my soul. But it works great to play the games now. I should never install other games from other consoles on my SNES Classic Mini, but if it works well and you own the original games it is good for you. But I want it to be like it was meant to be when I get the console from the beginning.
Alright so I have a handful of things to say about this video , both to the creator of this and those in the comments. * iv modded about 30 of these consoles between NES , SNES classics , PlayStation classic and Genesis Mini first release * ( videos provided on my channel ) 1) you cannot use just any micro usb cable to run from your mini console to your computer . Only the NES Classic edition and Super Nintendo Classic edition come with what’s known as “ Data Lined Micro USB Cables “ . So make sure you use a data lined Micro USB cable , preferably the NES / SNES classic cables. 2) later in this video there was footage of Mario Kart 64 and Mario 64 stuttering / lagging . A lot of that has to do with not overclocking the system / not using the right version of Retro Arch that was suggested within the video . That’s not to say that if you do that that every game is going to run flawlessly , but you would have to really play around with a FTP server within Hakchi to overclock the system from 1.2 GHz to 1.344444….. GHz to get better overall performance for the games on the classic consoles , especially games that require more technical performance. I have a Genesis Mini and Super NES classic edition that’s overclocked with I believe it’s either Retroarch 1.8 Overclock or Retroarch 1.9 Overclock ( the UI background that shows a guy riding a dirt bike ) and they can run Arcade emulators of classic fighting games like Street Fighter Zero 3 , Kings of Fighters 98 and the Original PC version of ultimate doom with the additional Sigil episode with no problems what so ever due to the system being overclocked in tandem with the right overclocked version of Retroarch installed . I mean it’s so cool. For PC Doom on the SNES classic edition you use a Wii Classic controller to use the bumpers for weapon changing and strafing . On the Genesis mini your best beat is to use a PlayStation Classic controller and the Genesis mini will map the PlayStation Classic buttons identical to the SNES Classic edition would with a Wii Classic controller . And when it comes to the fighting games that are the arcade version is , it’s basically like turning these mini consoles into semi mini Sega Saturns / Sega Dreamcasts ( especially the Genesis mini with a 6 button or Retro-Bit 8 Button controller ) 😉 Also there was mention of forcing games that are incompatible with the Canoe emulator into Retroarch / snes9x . The problem with that is , if you get the games working outside of canoe for Super Nintendo , yes there is the potential of more latency but also you loose the ability to do not only save states but more importantly the rewind feature ! Remember ! The Super Nintendo Classic Editions biggest advantage over the NES Classic edition and the Genesis mini was the ability to do rewind of up to 60 seconds for a standard genre game and up to 4 or 5 minutes in a JRPG / RPG. One thing to keep in mind though games that do run on canoe that you save in / can go in rewind if you choose to make many save states they will take up nearly eye to eye the same real estate as the game sitting on the console in itself so be aware of that . Also a game I tested this out on the SNES classic that needed to be patched for Canoe use was Street Fighter Alpha 2. When I applied the patch because it’s a late title special Chip game , it took up the space of 5 Super NES ROMs but can run off of canoe with rewind and save states instead of using Retroarch / snes9x . Ironically though games like PC Doom take up nearly the same amount of space even without the recently added Sigil episode but just the 4 main episodes . One other customization that was not mentioned by the way in this video was changing the music in the game selection UI . I learned how to do this from a few TH-cam videos but you are able to do that was well. First I did the final battle theme from Street Fighter Alpha 3 on my SNES Classic ( which there’s a vid on my channel of that as well as a Bluetooth board mod that takes place in it as well ) and then I made a Super Nintendo Classic Edition modded with extra games and custom music for one of my favorite Hip Hop artists ever , Cormega , as a gift of being a dedicated fan. And everytime he turns that SNES Classic I modded for him on it plays some of his best instrumentals he ever rhymed over. Once again though when you do a mod like that try to make any of the loops anyware from like 20-50 seconds long cuz it equates to like a game and a half to 4 games worth of space for each different background music track you decide to add. There’s many videos and hacking sources out there on the web. On my channel I have for reference Super Nintendo Classic Edition mod vids both for just standard SNES games only , music / hardware mods for the SNES Classic edition , Sega Genesis Classic overclocked videos , SNES Classic edition overclocked vids , and PlayStation Classic capture which includes PS1 running on a better emulator then the stock one and Dreamcast running on it as well along side with Super NES and Genesis usage on the PS1 Classic too. Thank you and open your eyes to the modding scene of these little things 👍
Wow, I appreciate you taking the time to write all of this! This was my first time modding one of these mini consoles, so I knew I'd probably make a few mistakes. All really informative stuff though, I'll keep this into account if I mod another mini console in the future.
I'd try one of these solutions: Disable your VPN (if you use one), disable Windows Firewall, try another USB cable, or try another USB port. Personally I found disabling my VPN did the trick.
Did you try PS1?? Would LOVE it if PS1 ran at full speed on this! If it does then I absolutely need to uodate my hack. Haven't done so for several years now.
From my limited experience, it depends on the game, and even then it may not run at a consistent frame rate. Lookup "SNES Mini Nintendo 64 Compatibility List - Notes I made on N64 games added to my NES Classic" on Reddit for a much detailed look on each N64 game's performance.
I mean, even the New 3DS line can just barely run N64 (there's stuff that works, but plenty more that don't) via Daedalus X64, and it can also run PSone pretty well, too (at least, it runs 2D fighters like Marvel vs. Capcom, and 2D platformers like Megaman 8&X4-X6 like a champ)...so this ain't too surprising.
Ownership of games, that's why. I don't like the Nintendo Expansion Pack because it's essentially just like renting a game. At least with the Classic, you own the titles bundled with it. Modding it to add games is the gray area - I get both sides of the argument on that issue. Regardless, I'd rather own a game than rent it.
Seems like you might just hack/ modify the cartridge and add expanded memory, bios, and games there and just use the snes as the carrier. 1tb snes cartridge...
Trying to add PS1 games to the system has been a real headache. Patton's (and others) guides keep making reference to adding BIOS files for PS1 via FTP (a nightmare for the fact I keep hitting wall after wall after wall... and still can't get FTP to work) but your guide makes it sound as easy as checking a few boxes and hitting a button in Hackchi. Easy! Simple! Even I can do that! So what gives? Am I doing it wrong? I just want to play Twisted Metal, and Sarges Heroes. Am I overthinking this? Is it really that easy? I feel like I'm missing something really obvious that nobody has said out loud for how stupidly obvious it should be, and it makes me want to rip my own head off. Help?
Sorry I’m uber late seeing this, but in my case for any FTP issues, I had to disable my VPN. I believe when my VPN was on it was messing up the communication between my PC and snes. Besides that you could try disabling Windows Firewall, using a different cable, or using another USB port. r/miniSNESmods is an incredibly helpful resource as well.
Most consoles on ebay for the prices mentioned are fakes... authentic ones are more like $150 now for little used ones. It would not matter if the fakes were good copies, but they cannot be modded.

I bought mine like, literally back in the day of 2017. For like, 2-3 years I used it as my little emulation machine, because I had no other console modded onto which to play such stuff. Once I got my Wii u and 3ds modded, it’s just sitting there…
A modded 3ds has been my biggest time sink as of the last 2 years
What game are you playing at 8:32? I’ve been looking for it forever! I had it when I was a kid but can’t remember the name
Believe it was Axelay!
I would argue two big reasons actually.
1 ( the biggest i would think): Collector's item.
2. Modding as you stated.
11:53 is there a way to have a theme for a specific folder?
Apparently there is but I couldn't find any tutorials on how it's done. Maybe check the miniSNESmods subreddit, I saw one user saying he might make a tutorial about it soon.
yo Garrett, speaking of modding, the wii U and nintendo 3ds are a blast to modd and play with if you can get into that!!
I've had my eye on modding both for a minute! Will check that out sometime for sure.
I would only mod a SNES Classic if it wasn’t my own honestly. I’m a little too sentimental to mod the unit I camped for outside of Target. Too many memories.
What is the exact model of usb stick that you use with pass through power?
If you're referring to the USB host mod, I personally didn't do it for mine. But I left a link to supported USB drives and sticks in my description.
Yes I remember because I got 2 of them along with 2 of the NES classic as well.
@@solonepeon5805 Nice, I never managed to get one of the NES minis. Not enough supply if I recall.
where'd you get that stand for the snes?
great video by the way, sold me on whether i should get one!
And then there’s sonic mania… and OpenLara… and Half-Life… I can go on
hey my name's garrett too! liked subscribed notifcations on
we should start a garrett meetup
Now if we could somehow get a program like reshade to work on it oooo chef’s kiss
I tried playing Mischief Makers (N64) but the game lagged to a crash as I walked forward on the first stage. But yeah, definitely grab your old mods and handheld games!
I'd like to get one. I was skeptical of getting one years ago when they first came out.
I wish i had one, but there are so many counterfeit ones for sale that i just pulled back from buying one. For now i just stuck with modding my Switch and added the games i want on the NSO emulators + Retroarch
This was such a cool video! I have my SNES mini modded, but I had no idea how much customization you could actually do. Once I get some free time I'm going to add more options to mine! I subbed!
I was genuinely surprised too, the modding community really went all out here. Appreciate the sub!
I bought one of the last 3 at Wal-Mart shortly before Nintendo announced the discontinuation. Had it barely 6 months before I hacked it.
Have you figured out how to play games in full screen with out the bourder sprites
maybe in retroarch you could stretch it out, but then it wouldn't look right. there are patches for some games to make them run in wide screen with out the stretched out pixels, but I don't know if the snes classic can run those.
Can this be done on Mac ?
I hacked my snes without installing Retroarch so them most of games looks terrible to play ,, so I did installed the retroarch but when I try to Hub it says error,, any help or tips plz ..thank u
Hey, why do you have 2 Secret of Manas at 7:29?
Oh right lol. I accidentally added the game file twice.
@@GarrettBuffington You also have 2 Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts at 7:39
Sadly ever since i got a retroid pocket 2s i havent touched my mini consoles
Really informative. I didn’t even consider using an SD card adapter, might have to look into that!
You should just be able to shut it down normally.
I already nodded mine a few years ago. It looks like updates have been made since. Didn't consider playing n64 games on it.
Alright so I have a handful of things to say about this video , both to the creator of this and those in the comments. * iv modded about 30 of these consoles between NES , SNES classics , PlayStation classic and Genesis Mini first release * ( videos provided on my channel )
1) you cannot use just any micro usb cable to run from your mini console to your computer .
And when it comes to the fighting games that are the arcade version is , it’s basically like turning these mini consoles into semi mini Sega Saturns / Sega Dreamcasts ( especially the Genesis mini with a 6 button or Retro-Bit 8 Button controller ) 😉
Also there was mention of forcing games that are incompatible with the Canoe emulator into Retroarch / snes9x .
Can it play GameCube games?
No.
Wish I had bought one when they were available...😢
Hacked mine within a month after. Same withy nes classic. Still have them and play with them. The spares are still sealed in their boxes.
Great video! You made it sound so easy and it was until I got this message. Your device is taking a long tiem to reboot..
I'd try one of these solutions: Disable your VPN (if you use one), disable Windows Firewall, try another USB cable, or try another USB port. Personally I found disabling my VPN did the trick.
Been did it gba games and sega on it it’s amazing
Did you try PS1?? Would LOVE it if PS1 ran at full speed on this!
If it does then I absolutely need to uodate my hack. Haven't done so for several years now.
Wait SNES Mini has enough power to emulate N64 games?
1tb snes cartridge...
play emulator and get retroachievements guys, its a gamechanger
It’s the only way to own an official Star fox 2 game.
Does this work with they NES Classic too?
Yes.
Can this play PS2?
No.
I sold mine last Christmas
I rather keep it original for authenticity. But they're hard to find now.
I have a modders SNES Classic BUT all the games took up all the storage space so I can’t use save states on games. So infuriating
You didn't even try PS1? I bet it runs way better than n64. Maybe NDS runs too
Nah I'll keep it pristine in the box for collectors value
Still have mine cib thanks to my ex gf i still treasure it and have it modded
Most consoles on ebay for the prices mentioned are fakes... authentic ones are more like $150 now for little used ones. It would not matter if the fakes were good copies, but they cannot be modded.
Modder need to find a way how to increase the storage.
the only reason i did not nod my snes mini cuz its $200
Need chrono trigger
Gba is overrated, I was there for the whole event. Gb/gbc are much better.
On this though I want nes, genesis and snes.
Ess En E Ess.
Stop calling it “s’ness” it’s Super Nintendo
chill
S-N-E-S not sness
It's both
Snes mini is weak. It can not run 3D Games at all, duh! N64, PSX, Saturn and Dreamcast done dream about it, dude. Go with Android.
Fuck ya! Saving this video.
