Old School RuneScape was created using a backup of the game from August 10th, 2007. What would happen if Jagex went with a different backup version, one from exactly a year later on August 10th, 2008. In today's we explore all the differences between the two backups and what features would exist and what wouldn't.

Revs roaming the wilderness was crazy. Everyone was chillin at green dragons or clan wars (when it was in wildly) and as soon as someone heard that rev attack they’d scatter lmao. Every man for himself!

Man I miss those graphics. I remember the day they updated. I got on and couldn't believe how good my armor looked with the new textures. I was wearing my epic d long, rune plate, d skirt, d boots and d med.
Easily Triggered nice. Back then, I was a f2p noob haha. Had full bronze haha with a bronze 2h. Having dragon back then was my no 1 members' goal.
Wasn't the Dlong updated to look so bad that the price dropped drastically? I agree that the HD update was overall great but I recall thinking that the new Dlong looked terrible. It had that curved tip that made it look like it would be useless as a stabbing weapon.
You're right! I completely forgot that they made that curve more exaggerated haha. IMO I'd like 2008 HD graphics without major model changes.

Actually... the actual graphics are making it hard for me to keep on playing... I just want a game with good graphics.
I tried RS3 several times but it's just not the same, it feels kinda extincted and all my friends play OSRS so RS3 won't ever work for me.
The fact that so many people want OS HD makes me feel happy and hopeful, we should all think of a way of how we can accomplish creating awareness at Jagex!
Just an HD option would be perfect so the people who would want to stick to the old graphics will be satisfied too.

That’s probbaly the best outcome. That way players who prefer HD can have it and those who like the old style don’t have to be forced to use it.
Why would jagex do that? Why’d the want us to be happy? Lol
I remember when there was a 3rd party launcher called OS HD, but it ended up being deleted because it would come up as a botting client to jagex servers and that the creator would refuse to send a copy of it to Jagex. Check out A Friends video on this.
I want a 2008-2010 revision, not just graphically. Legit, 2010 has just as much if not more content than osrs atm aside from qols
not going to happen though. They would have to make new models for every NPC and piece of content in the game so buildings, bridges etc. Then every time something new came out they would have to make two separate models for whatever they are releasing. The sheer amount of time they would have to put into it would be absurd, hell Jagex had to have outside help when developing the HD update originally due to the sheer size of the update would be.
In my opinion runescape was at it's best ~2011-12 (prior to EOC)

World of Warcraft doesn't have the highest polygon count or the most detail, yet I think it stills looks amazing. Aesthetic =/ Quality. Just because your game has technologically superior or more realistic graphics doesn't make it look better.

Square RS3 technically has better graphics, but try and tell me the new Catherby and Hobgoblins look better than the 2010 versions. The change in art style made half of RS3's content look worse than in 2010.
Square The environment definitely looks amazing, but a lot of the new armour just seems so out of place in runescape. It's like the level of detail is inconsistent, which makes some things look very awkward.
I would’ve enjoyed this much more despite the fact I LOVE the 2007 backup

scott I absolutely agree! Even if just one team member was working on it I don’t imagine it would take too long seeing as how they should still have all the old assets available. Plus OSHD only had 2 people working on it and it supposedly only took a few weeks to create.
Bro, we should start like a crowdfunding campaign to collect money so we can persuade the people who got this awesome HD client to work together with Jagex so they can bring back OSHD!

It is indeed very possible for them to recreate that Colonello. I think they just don't want it... 70% of assets are there, it's true that those should be revised, but I'm sure there's no need to make huge changes to the assets themselves. What forms a considerable chunk of work is writing an OpenGL/LWJGL rendering engine, that has modern features such as dynamic asset scaling, all of the anti-aliasing stuff, efficient memory usage, and make almost every aspect of the graphics to be customizeable by the user.
It is a very doable thing, and quite few private servers have those features, so I can't see why the OGs couldn't handle such a task.

I'm so glad that the backup was from the pre-HD era. I played RS from early 2004 to early 2007 before quitting so OSRS felt like home when it came out. HD would have been completely alien.
2007 is fine, but I'd prefer it if they went with a backup from 04 or 05 instead. I quit playing before 07, so I don't remember things like the wildy ditch, random event minigames and the GE back when I used to play.
I remember having dialup internet and was waiting for the HD update to install and it took hours! I was so excited I was pretty sure I was staring at the loading screen for most of the duration lol

The game still has an install/update...? That little loading bar when you open the client isn't just client-sided.
On my pc the hd update would run at 1 frame per minute and then crash.
My PC was so shit at that time it was lagging as hell when playing the HD, and I was so jealous my friend could play HD RS on his gaming laptop. It's sad 3 years later I got my first gaming PC with GTX 460 and I was no longer playing RS anymore.

I would probably be playing if OSRS was from 2009-2010 I think that was the perfect Runescape
I started in classic but was on and off for years. 2008 was when I become serious about the game and started grinding out 99s and even making alternate accounts to PK on. Would have loved to see a 2008 build except maybe no summoning in pvp and definitely no trade limits and I would have liked to see wildy pvp.
Crispin Freeman why no summoning in pvp? It's a combat stat. That was only ever in play in multi. That's like saying no prayer in pvp.. they get weighted the same. I for one thought it was priceless to watch pures get wrecked by summon tanks. Now there's no build diversity 1 def all offense spectabbers . Crys about summoning time of fire iron man hitting 45s at lvl 50 shits broke not even gaining hp xp.

Summoning would of been alot more diverse if u didmt need multi to use it amd if beast of burden were not included, now the only reason to get summoning is for beast of burden while u bryd in single areas

Why those were the years the game went to shit. Free trade and wilderness removal and half the player base quitting, what great years. 95% of OSRS players wanted the 2006-2007 glory years and we got it.
@@ChrisM-bn5vr The poll was to bring back 2008 RS (Minus the free trade removal and wilderness pk removal). They didn't have the back up for 08 so their best option was 07.
Kheso No it wasn’t. The community wanted the 317 version back. Everyone was playing a private server called 2006Scape or 06Scape before they brought in OSRS. The community actually wanted the 2006 version of the game but apparently all they could find was 2007. If the community wanted the 2008 version of the game then everyone would be asking for the HD update but no one is, until I watched this video I have not met a single player or seen a single post of someone asking for HD OSRS.

jokes aside, they added alot of things that weren't in 2006 and 2007 anyway, so if they added stuff from 2008 withoud the stuff like trade limits and such it would just be better.

How was summoning broken? Could you use a summon to do high DPS during a solo combat zone in PvP? I'm honestly curious.
If anything I say it was a needed buff and added more flavor to the game.

Oh dude, Thanks for the Nostalgia. Not too long ago there was that HD Client that got shutdown almost instantly after the release. I miss the old 'new' graphics. I started when Runescaped looked like oldschool but my primetime was with those 2008 HD Graphics.
I miss that client a lot! Even though it only lasted about a week it was so amazing to use

nope, they said they'ed rather work on more "markitable" features like raids and dungeons rather than improving the backend of runescape, with stuff like openGL support so it can run at a constant 60fps without the terrible frame pacing or allowing runescape to use more than 1 core

i dont understand why osrs doesnt get a graphic update? the game is not even from 2007 anymore... there were so many changes + a whole new continent and many more little areas... there are hundreds of new items and so on... BUT i dont understand why they dont add new hd graphics. maybe they could make it so that we could chose what we want in the settings... nice remastered graphics or classic version...

I started my main in a somewhat middle area... i remember seeing the old login screen with the torches... but a few weeks in I got the new roaming location login. I then started seeing the HD setting
jesus christ, i never knew exactly when i started runescape i used to guess back in 2010. because my rs3 account is 7 years old making from 2011, and i knew i lost an account before this so i always thought i started back around 2010, after hearing u talk about the old tutorial, nostalgia hit me in the face because i remember the first time i started playing, i played that tutorial which was removed 2 months later, the conclusion is i actually started playing back in 2008 and this made me feel so darn happy because i never clearly knew when i started.

These days imo were the prime days of RuneScape. So much nostalgia and genuine fun. I’ll always miss games like Soul Wars and Stealing Creation.
I Started Playing in 2007 but the most of the nostalgic memories of the game I have, are from 2008/2009 and the best memories playing with friends and really enjoying the game are from 2010/2011.
You for got about clan wars. Clan wars was very popular in 2008. it's when a started playing the game. Now it's empty it's kinda empty on rs3 also.
Some sort of optional graphical update to Old-school would be greatly appreciated.

I just miss dungeoneering. That was my favorite skill and was very fun to play. Maybe we could implement the fun part without adding a new skill.
If the Priffdinas poll passes, there will be an activity called The Gauntlet added. You harvest resource nodes and kill monsters to gear up, then, after a certain amount of time, you are teleported into a boss fight.

I played from 2004 until 2007 consistently. I played just a bit from 2008 to 2012. The last time I played was the Christmas tree hat holiday item. Then I started playing OSRS in 2013. Then got back into OSRS by 2018 and played consistently til now.

The trade limit actually DIDN'T really hurt gold selling. Not sure how they bypassed it, but you could easily buy gold still. It just made things even less safe because you had to give sellers access to your account. Worked though.
I miss minigames and activities of that era. GOP, SC, stars and evil trees were my wheelhouse.

2008scape was tbh the worse. I hate it when people when they say "OH 2008SCAPE WAS GOOOOOODDD" no it wasn't. It had the LEAST amount of players, no free trade, no wilderness, small pk scene, and allot of boring crap. I PLAYED this version too. I didn't really enjoyed it.

They should bring back summoning and dungeoneering to osrs with dungeoneering being also available to f2p. That coal bag was an absolute god send and so helpful. F2p needs splash more content for osrs.
Learning the Ropes should still be added to the game. Lumbridge mine was an awesome concept I wish it wouldn't had gotten closed off after the tutorial.
I remember the tutorial where you're in a basement of some house in lumbridge. Theres a goblin in there who gives you gear and makes you poison a dragons food to put it to sleep, so you can get out. Good times.

What’s funny is that I started RuneScape in ‘08 when Learning the Ropes was the tutorial. I thought it was pretty cool, I liked the cutscenes and the quests and stuff. I only made 1 character so I NEVER knew about tutorial island.
Started playing again for the first time, and forgot my old account credentials, so I made a new account and was surprised about that quest being gone. So I looked it up and couldn’t find anything about it, because I didn’t remember the name of the quest. I thought I was insane or something.

My worst pain about OSRS is that there is no summoning in it. One of the best skills ever.
yes and it totally fits into the world of runescape. pets and summoning would be great
but a little bit pain in the ass to train it... you need summing emblems and a couple items.. then go to a stone and summon to get exp... thats boring, maybe they could change it. for instance. summon a monster... then go fight with that and get summoning exp like this? with this summoning could be trained with berserker and so on and would be much more fun...

I mostly played between 2004 and 2007, but I did still play in 2008 and 2009... I remember the update that added a lot of new hairstyles, and I want them back. I also remember the summoning skill, but somehow I don't remember the graphics looking like that, I only remember the game looking like it always had before (until RS3 at least).
I can't believe the graphical rework came out in 2008 I thought it was a few years later, I think I had stopped playing when they changed the damage values to x10

The trade limit and removing pvo from wildy was the biggest change the messed up RS for a long time. Anyone who liked to pk was done, if you played with friends and liked the ability to trade, done.

I started playing before the ge and wilderness updates, but didn't really matter to me as I was a low level player. So I agree with this. 2008 was one of the best years and times in RuneScape. It was a middle ground. Things were fun, and didn't look absolutely terrible.
