Hey, everyone. Thank you all so much for the kind words and support on this video. I'm looking forward to making many more nostalgic videos similar to this one in the near future. Stay tuned!
I also want to share some incredibly helpful additional insights from the comments that slightly change some considerations from the video:
There were no stat checks for gear at release so you could wear adamant at level 1 instead of level 30. Black, Red, and Blue Capes had different stats until the ability to dye capes made them all equal - blue was best followed by red then black. In RS2 it was possible to change Family Crest Gauntlets but not until August 2005 (not March 2004). Dragon plateskirts were released a couple months after the legs in March 2005. Metal boots didn't have a strength bonus until 2006 or so. The Abyssal Whip was released on February 15th (misspoke), not January 15th. The first Whip was supposedly received at the end of February 2005.
I also discovered that the Green Day album came out a year earlier than I said in September of 2004 so it's me. I'm the American idiot.

A small story of how I got my first whip. I was a pretty big noob and could never afford one. My brother was a much bigger player and he had a friend who lived in Europe, we were in the US. His European friend had the slayer level to kill Abyssal Demoms and while he slept, my brother would use his account to grind demons for whips to sell and split the profits. One day while my brother was at a party and I was at home, I snuck into my brothers room, found the paper with the login info and got on. I grinded out demons til a whip dropped, took about 3 hours. I traded it to my account and replaced all the food and supplies I had used on the account and put it back where he was originally logged out at. They never knew and that’s how a total noob was able to get a whip.

I've been playing RuneScape since 2005, and I've only died once. Because I'm way too scared. I don't really take risks. Though I have completed 102 quests and have 203 quest points. I just don't try anything with advanced combat mechanics, like prayer flicking, or anything where you really have to learn patterns and timing, etc.
My health pretty much *never* goes below half, because I'd panic too much if it did. If I ever got hit for 20+ damage, I'd probably react by screaming and closing my laptop 😂

I remember back in the late 2000s arriving in lumbridge for the first time. The whole town was crowded with players at the castle. High lvls in cool gear lined up by the wall having convos. Rookies running left and right. Warriors killing goblins on the bridge, by the lake or next to the Al Kahrid gate. Rangers and mages killing cows. Skillers fishing in the lake or smithing at the furnace. Everywhere u look was a player doing something. U could connect with someone at any minute because everyone was new and trying to make our way up. I met some real genuine people from across the planet. Our time together was so special because connection to the internet could’ve ended at any moment somebody calls the home phone😂I didn’t even complete much of the quests or goals, I wasn’t that good. I stopped playing when I entered high school as I was focused on sports. Just recently I came across this ad that said RUNESCAPE MOBILE. Now as a full grown adult I feel like my childhood was calling me back so here I am! Back at it with more knowledge and commitment to completing goals. Only thing that gets me now tho is how the the cities are not the same anymore. Ghost towns. Everybody just hangs out at the grand exchange and show off their riches or beg for riches.

So now you have players maxing like never before. Back then in rs classics there was no mega bosses to drop millions of gp in loot, at best you had d meds which where 5-7 mil at the start and 3 mil just before rs2 came out. And to max out a skill on rs2 costed like 25 mill.

The word 'rune' in Runescape is referencing the magically rocks used for magic spells, aka runes... Not rune armour.. That is why the word Runescape is spelt out on rocks... they're runes.

I think the first time i ever saw runescape, i was about 8 years old. Making the year 2004ish. I could not believe my best friend was playing such a real looking game. Took about a year after that before i was able to play at my own house on a the new computer my family got. The first skill i ever got to 99 was woodcutting, and id like to say it took about a year to do it. Couldnt grind/didnt have the patience i do now as an adult. Also, there was no profit doing it, either i didnt know how cause obviously noob, the GE didnt exist and or i was just lazy. Now 20 years later i started playing again this year and its still just as good if not better than i remember, now that im older can understand what's going on alot better. RuneScape really was my first video game love ❤️

Man Runescape was the most epic game of my childhood. I started in Late 2001. I personally love skilling and this was back when skilling was so important. Now its just watered down and it's all about PVM and PVP. I just recently picked Runescape back up again about 6 months ago and was saddened to see my favorite skillers in mining, smithing, and fishing were basically irrelevant lol

skilling was insane in rs classics basically there was no ge and trading for items in bulk was hard. I got 2200+ skill total on osrs and 19x 99s and let me tell you i just got the 99s to max out, i never skilled to make money, as most gp is from pvm and or slayer. At the end of rs classcis i had 55 attack 73 stre, 53 defense, 67 hit points, 62 magic , 25 range 75 cooking 73 fishing, 62 mining, 53 smithing, 53 woodcut. I was proud of the 62 magic as you know in runescape classics magic was insanely expensive i remmeber spending one weekend getting earth staffs and steel plate bodies from the wildy maze then buying 2500 chaos runes.

31:38 That makes me wonder what would have happened if Jagex had never tried to put a combat triangle in Runescape, but had made a different method of comparing the different combat styles. I am not sure that old servers would bring back the nostalgia, since people mostly play for the gains rather than for fun. How many people play castle wars on OSRS now? To my knowledge, players are afking for the collection slots rather than for fun. If it is the mindset rather than the mechanics, a new old server won't fix it.

Very well researched video, but with most historic videos of this length, there are some nitpicks:
    1. You mention needing 30 attack and defense at about 3 minutes in. Attack and Defense were not necessary to wield weapons or armour until 8 December 2001.
    2. You mention that the Blue Cape is only "technically" Best In Slot because it is the Cape of Champions, available in the Champions Guild. But on release, the Black Cape, Red Cape, and Blue Capes had different defensive stats. Red Cape gave +0, Black Cape gave +1 and Blue Cape gave +2. This changed on 8 December 2001 as well, when green/purple/yellow/orange capes were released.
    3. Players could have worn an apron or brass amulet in the amulet slot on release, so perhaps these are "best in slot" by your "fashionscape" criteria.
    4. Some of your clips show the dragonstone amulet with a pixel of purple in the middle. It never looked like that in classic, but it does look like that in RSC Cabbage...!
    5. klank's gauntlets do not appear different than family crest gauntlets in Classic, so there was no perceptible prestige difference at that time.
Also, please use the official RSC Wiki! The fandom RSC wiki was abandoned over 5 years ago now, and we've done a lot of work improving the accuracy of historical facts & creating new articles there.

    • @HamOSRS
      @HamOSRS  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Thank you for the corrections! Some of the necessary info has been lost to time, but a team effort from the community, especially through the official wiki, is the best way to get everything in order. The official RSC/OSRS/RS3 wiki was absolutely critical in the making of this video as seen with the references to the brand new DPS calcs. Some of the screenshots probably shouldn't have been from the fandom, but I promise I use the official one and appreciate you.
Fascinating about the capes. I never would have known without your comment. As for the brass necklace, I would argue since it had no stats that it was using up a critical inventory space in Classic, but it was too iconic to exclude from the thumbnail.
And yes you caught me on Cabbage - very fun reminiscing on some old nostalgia there :)

I vaguely recall people getting abby whips on day 2 or so. There was a bug where you could use ring of recoil or whatever, and someone eventually got it.
Not sure if Jagex took it away though, but most likely banned the few who got it.
I think granite mauls were within first few weeks for sure though. Everyone went crazy over them for several weeks until abby whip became more available, then the price plummeted. I believe it was like 1-2m, then crashed to like 100-200k in a few days. Whips starting at 40m, and in a few months heading into 3-5m.

I remember staying up all night as my 6 or 7 year old self. Everyone was asleep, the family computer calling my name.... My dad at the time worked graveyard so he would get home around 5 or 6am..
I spent so long trying to trade my mass assortment of banked goods at Camelot for a Dharoks axe.. A sea of flash1 wave1 texts for hours on end, I swear I started to hallucinate from the childlike sleep deprivation 🤣
Anyways, I kept typing "buying dh axe" with all the chat effects to try getting someone to trade me in the sea of people at the Camelot teleport... I can't remember what all I had but I believe it was 120k or so and a nearly full inventory of random sort of junk.... Mind you, back then there was no GE, so the things we call junk now were actually useful to an extent...
Anyways, scattered story here but at some point before the sun started coming up, I'd finally gotten the dharoks axe. The hallucinations of hearing things in the living room nearby wasn't a joke, I was hearing the surround sound system saying "and Cody is still awake! He needs to go to bed!" Randomly hearing what sounded like a voice on a radio station...
But, I recall after all those hours spent trying to get the axe, I went off to do something else in the game and I saw my dad pull up!
I was so scared, I logged out, turned the computer and monitor off (which the old ones take forever!), jumped on the couch and acted like I was asleep...
He saw me and immediately picked me up, walked me upstairs and put me into my bed which was the top bunk of a bunkbed....
He really was an incredible man. Rest in peace poppa. He paid for my membership because I complained that my brother got membership and I wanted to play on membs too 🥺
