It's a random Monday night at 1:47 AM on April 24th, 2023. I just wanted to say I still read everyone's new comments. Thanks for watching still. You're all awesome, and I hope everyone is doing okay. 🙂
I've been dealing with anxiety lately (due to some diet changes, nothing dangerous) and randomly found this video in my feed again. Completely melted the anxiety away and helped me get to sleep. Thanks for the video. I would love to see an update, maybe once we get Sailing! Big ask I know, this kind of video must take a ton of work.
Cheers from one who grew up in a broken home, but got to live in a magical world. Thank you for making this incredible documentary. And thank you to Runescape for providing me sanctuary, lifelong friendships, countless hours of fun, and escape from a hellish beginning since '04. I'm lucky I got to grow up in Gilenor.
You deserve to be imortalized in the Varrock Museum for creating this historical informative video essay; as a player in 2001~ at the age of 5, now playing since 2019~, there's is almost literally no collected information developed between when I stopped playing in around 2005 (because it was "not cool") and now. Between "Best in slot" gear and huge milestones I have to earn in order to "play the game" I've felt lost as a "new" player and this video really helps someone learn the game literally from the ground up. Bravo!
That's one of the best comments I've ever received and what I've always hoped videos like these can do for players new and old, returning or still here. Thanks a lot my friend. 🙂
Being a f2p noob back in 2006, with my friend in the computer lab at school, was definitely one of the highlights of my childhood. Those times just don't come back but this video brought all that back and, I won't lie, made me a little emotional.
I am so addicted to watching just this video. I arrive to work and have this playing in the background and then head home and watch it again to catch up on the same details that I've heard hundreds of times before. This is just such a fascinating video and am so keen to see another video from you!
Really appreciate that my friend, I'm glad you like the video so much. :) I plan to make another one of these again in the near future with much more information!
@@Mote_Plox Do you have any other games that you enjoy? Maybe even another channel I'm unaware of that you post about? Just the indepth engaging story that you're able to tell is addictive.

I wish I could go back and be a kid again. So many good memories. The local library stayed open 2 hours after closing just so we all could get together and play runescape.
Bro, back in the day we would all go to the library and play from open to close, our local library actually added an entire adult section and 2 hour limit because of us. I miss those days so much.
Could not imagine how long this took but thank you for the memories and we miss you mote plox, We ALL hope you have been doing good and staying safe and healthy
You have no idea what this video means to me. Thanks for making this, the game is a fundamental part of my life & always will be. This filled me with a lot of emotions, I've been playing since I was like 8 years old and I'm 25 now. Lots of memories, even more friends, and hours of fun. Grateful runescape exists!
We had no idea how lucky we were to get OSRS. Now it's lost to rs3 style updates and updates to promote people playing on their own instead of friends.
@@SAGGING_GUT I'm glad to see someone with the same views as mine. Soul wars, shooting stars, neither of those belong in osrs. And don't even get me started on the ezscape that is tempoross (80k xp/hr?!). :/ also, jagex has been ramping up the frequency and severity of unpolled updates, including content which has nothing to do with game integrity. And that's furthering the feeling of osrs turning into rs3. If you're interested in a video discussing the dangers of unpolled updates including the blowpipe/dhide nerfs, I'll be uploading a video about it on my osrs channel De_Void in a couple weeks.
@@trumpatier 80k xp/hr isn't insane at 90-99 fishing plus this skill is so fucking boring to train so whatever. Soul wars was unnecessary but not adding new content to the game will eventually kill it. I mean imagine the game without CoX or Tob. I hate it when people vote no to everything new without considering it first. Osrs is dying right now due to the lack of new PvM content like raids 3 for example
@@yazan774 osrs is not dying lmao. It's been setting new records. I'm tired of people voting yes to everything because it benefits them, without thinking of the long term consequences. And yes, 80k fishing xp/hr is pretty insane for a non click-intensive method.
That was a ride and a 1/2. I stopped playing runescape in 2008 when I was a kid. Recently got back into OSRS, and wanted to catch up on everything I missed. Little did I knowI checked through one of the coolest documentaries if I've ever seen.
I've been playing this game for just about 15 years now, all I can say is that the emotions I felt watching this are indescribable. Playing osrs itself is very nostalgic but seeing the old videos and hearing about events that happened back in the day was amazing. I cannot thank you enough for the effort and time you put into making this. Glad to see you are back and I hope you and your family are doing well.
Omg you’re just the right person to ask these questions. I played it more than 15 years ago but have never logged in since I quit. Is Zezima still number one? 😄 Are Dragon Masks still worth 300k? Can you still swap scam people by trading? 🤣 Does the NPC still shout „Senventior Disthine Molenko“? Can you finally copy paste stuff into the chat or do people still use chatbots to sell their stuff in World 1 by the left bank in Varrock? 🤣 Is there even something like that anymore? 🥹
Thanks for allowing me to play catch up with a game I used to play religiously 😁 Also, I still have a 9 HP account on RS3 that I made back in 2001 or 2002. Fittingly renamed to “Only 9 HP”.
It's so crazy that we live in an age where the literal creators of the game have to resign because the game is no longer in their control. Always makes me sad hearing the story, but at the same time happy that they kept their integrity.
I legitimately never knew the reason for that memorial hill in the wilderness, I’ve been wondering for more than 10 years who or what that was for, and now I finally know that it was to memorialize a dedicated and loved player. Awesome video, man
My friend told me about it back before it happened , he used to talk about how much of a legend The Old Nite was , funny how my 12 year old buddy knew this and wasent even a hardcore player, his cousin was and he probably heard of it from someone in game , nevertheless that was such a good time in RuneScapes history , and I always pay homage to that statue when passing it in the wildly lol.
That pub in the wildy at ferox (or however you spell it) They ended up dedicating the name for that player. The statue is female in rs3. Would have been amazing if memorial Hill was dedicated to that player though
@@brandonmcgillis well, let's be real, sometimes statues with vague figures are appropriated by people who recognized a real hero (even if they only ever played the video game) The Old Nite was apparently nice to everyone he spoke with. It would seem that the statue prveiously deidcated to someone or some piece of lore was retroactively coopted by the players to remember The Old Nite. Legendary.
I've played this game since I was 12 (currently 27). Idk why but I almost cried numerous times while watching this video, it just brought back so many memories of my childhood and teenage years, to early and later college times. I remember when so many of the things mentioned in the video actually occurred in real life and I could also think about what all was going on in my personal life at the same time. Imo, this is the best overall game ever made. I have learned so many things from it over the years I have played, and enjoyed every second of it. It is definitely a big part of what has made me who I am today. Was my second time watching this vid just btw 🙂✌
As an on and off player since November 03, thank you so much for making this. This was a complete walk down memory lane that's irreplaceable. People don't often understand why when I say how important Runescape is and was to me because it taught me most everything I know about macro economics, stocks, programming, and the human condition. Growing up with the childhood and parents I had it was instrumental in forming the person I would eventually become since it was near impossible to develop real world relationships. I listened to most of this video with my fiancee and broke it all down for her too. She played for like 1 year but never got into it like I did. That's enough rambling though, thanks again for putting this effort in and making a solid tour of the timeline that I can share with my old rs friends.
Mote plox is the only TH-camr i disable adblock for. He's like that best friend you only see once a year, but when you do see him you always have a great time
@@Mote_Plox We all appreciate you bro. You've got a lot of talent when it comes to making videos and you got me back into Runescape. Hope you & your family are doing well and staying safe!
Practice against one Jad in the new 6 Jad minigame until you can defeat it. The hardest part about getting a fire cape is not panicking when you get to the final wave
@@TheRealerArbor Yeah it does. Just focus on slowly getting the healers to attack you one at a time. They do barely any damage, and it's better to let them get a few heals on Jad than miss a prayer
This is a love letter, not a documentary. Other then the tone shift while discussing the squeal/solomons additions, you can definately feel the true passion put into this project. Thank you mote, looking forward to seeing what else you have in the works.
Hey man, I know this video is your most popular and it's been around for a while but just wanted to say, thank you for putting the amount of effort into this that you have. As someone who's just jumped back into OSRS, this video filled me with so much nostalgia and it was bloody amazing. Good to see you're pumping more content out there too, you've got my sub!
Wow, I just realized it's been 6 years since I designed you that logo and it still stands on your channel. Great content as always. Really need to get back to OSRS soon, starting to feel super nostalgic.
Runescape, specifically osrs, gives me a huge sense of calm when I grind for stuff, for example, right now I'm farming pure essence, extremely simple task, repetitive and boring for most of you... but meanwhile I do it, I think of my life, my business, my job, my wife and kids... gives me a very weird head space where I can regroup myself and follow a plan. Some of you play with the max optimization, some of us just like grinding :) what ever you like, thanks for playing and keeping this game alive!
not gonna lie got a little emotional watchig this video, runescape was a huge part of my life i remember getting home and playing for hours after finishing homework and stuff, now i work 60+ hours a week and havent played iun a few years. runescape will always be apart of my life no matter what
Bro so true man much love. By the way old school runescape is on mobile and the new HD graphics on runelite are amazing If you have a laptop or computer. I got back into it
im 1 year retired and my 1 account was banned. if i go again it's another fresh start. i don't wanna. but i know damn well it will happen again at some point. no1 quits runescape, only takes long breaks.
I have watched every second of this. At multiple times with tears in my eyes. The past year has been a nightmare for my social life and emotional well-being. I started playing in 2003 and quit in 2013 with short periods of me returning over the last years on oldschool. In the past year oldschool has brought me tremendous pleasure and reliving of feelings from the past. Its amazing howmuch something like a video game can do for a person..
I started back in 2005 - the ending of your video struck me. Since 2005 I have indeed come back when life has been so stressful and hard to take. RuneScape has seen me through some incredibly dark times, and I didn't even realise until I heard you mention it. Thanks RuneScape!
For the longest time I never entirely understood why the split between new and old runescape players was so intense. This video really puts it into perspective. :)
@@azureandnoir3274 it was pretty bad when it first came out imo. Nowadays, they polished it a lot. But back when it came out in 2010, it was one of the worse things to happen to runescape considering that the game was very much thriving just the way it was.
That is me at 2:00:31 and 2:10:04 :D! This is the greatest video I have seen and I thank you so much for all the time and effort in making this. Runescape has been a huge part of our lives and its crazy to see everything that has happened over these many years. I have personally played the game for 15 years and met so many of my friends through this game :).
Hey - watching this almost 3 years after release and it still holds up. I appreciate the passion you had and ill be taking a look at your other content. Thanks for making me all nostolgic and happy on a random Thursday.
I had planned to watch this in parts over the week.... I watched it all in one sitting. Thank you so much for creating this and putting as much effort as you did. I love the history of Runescape as it was also a huge deal to me as it was for many... again, thank you Mote Plox!!!
To me, the relationship between Jagex and the community is like that relationship between a boyfriend and a girlfriend, when the girlfriend doesn't know what she wants to eat and no matter what Jagex orders, she is still pissed off because it's not what she wanted 😂😂
This video was an emotional roller coaster. I started playing RuneScape just over 13 years ago, I'm currently 23 years old. The game has been a major part of my life and I don't regret that one bit. Amazing video!
nice man! I started in kindergarden when I was 6, been playing it every year for holiday items, made so many accounts now due to losing mains, 27 now. imagine playing runescape for 21 years. lol.
@@uhtred7860 nah, our school system was just different. I didn't start kindergarten at 5, 3 to 5 was preschool, then a year break and I was six when I started kindergarten
This channel showed me one of my fav childhood games and I can't thank you enough for that mote plox ❤. I have been watching you for 8 years now ever since I was 12. I hope you know how much you mean to so many people in the runescape community👑👑
I started playing Runescape in 2009 when it was "Runescape 2" about a year or so before Dunegoneering was released. I am now 23 years old and listening to this video while painting my wooden fence in my garden in my apartment that I bought. Real life carries on as you get older but the child within you never fully goes away.
This video was so unbelievably well put together. As a 90's kid who also grew up playing Runescape, I thank you for all of the information on the state of the game & nostalgia.
As someone who has played since 2004 and still plays Old School to this day, I'm not afraid to admit I had a tear in my eye in that outro portion of the video. I resonated with so much of what you said - how Runescape has been such a big part of my life, how many lifelong friendships have been forged because of this pixelated point and click game we call Runescape. What a fantastic video, well done sir.
Makes me feel like I’m 6 years old again, sneaking into the computer room late at night to play RuneScape while I should be sleeping for school. Thank you for the nostalgia trip!
i loved the computer room haha! my dad would leave for work at 5:30am, and i'd start school 5th grade up the street at 9am... but i'd set my alarm for 5:35am so i could play for hours before school without my dad thinking i'm insane
hope the new player guide give the new player a godly weapon and slain a king black dragon scene, give the new player godly hammer to smith top tier weapon, make a potion give 50% attk, defense, strength, staff of destruction one hit black king dragon, arrow of death one shot everything, all the top tier skills of the game, and the grand exchange. then poof everything is gone. it is all just a dream now new hero start from lvl 1 with junk weapon and 1 last drink potion, and food start on the destination to the top. puff you are now teleport to lumbdrige. lol

That monologue at the end actually gave me tears. I used to play a lot in runescape classic and RS2, started in 2001 (9 years old), i remember some of the events shown here. i played until about 2006, mostly in RS2 when it was released. Stopped playing for a long time, but returned every now and then after OSRS was released. this year's january i started my current account, and i never stopped playing since. thank you for the memories! Awesome video!

I normally don't comment on anything but you need to know Mote, I sincerely appreciate the work you had to do for this video. So much I didn't know or had forgotten. Fantastic video would love to see more rs history!
25 years old and wow I’m at my seat like I’m 11 again man have you hit some nerves. This video was beautiful, it’s like I traveled back almost. I’ve had-almost nothing constant in my life except RuneScape. It brings me so much joy, and almost like A sense of security and yet I’m still clowned for playing this game until this day lol - I know only other RS’ers understand but this game really is something special. I’m glad it survived and thrived as it did. It deserved it.
Insane video man, this had to of taken ages to perfect and make, trip down memory lane really. I started at the beginning of actual 2007 and consistently played until EOC and then never touched it again until the very first most nostalgic login of OSRS. What a game RuneScape is. We never quit we just take long breaks :P
This deserves every single view it has and many more. Learned so much, used to play casually from time to time, in the beginning barely knowing English. So much fun to see all the progression this game has had. Never knew about RSC until this video. My nostalgia greatly appreciates this video. Thank you! 🥇🏆
Really glad to see OSRS still doing great, and seeing RS3 on the rise again after so many years of bleeding out is really heartwarming to see too. Great video.
2012 Was really the end of the original RS feel you got. I remember playing all the way from 2004-2008 and then on and off after that up to EOC. The golden era was for sure 2005-2008 Legends where made like Zezima. I still remember some of my friends from world 7 top left of Varrock square even though I've not seen them since that. Cola turk michaelababe Rich and many more! Runescape Truly is a phenomenal game to play. So thank you to the Gower brothers (especially Andrew) for making what essentially was their childhood imagination into a reality I'll never forget anything about Runescape in my life even if its 50 years down the line. I could picture these cities and areas better then I can my own city I live in. Great video and outro, Learned so much I had not known about Runescape history.
I’ve never played Rune Scape, as I was already in ‘another world’, but I watched the whole video. Very interesting stuff and a lot of controversies around this classic game. The club penguin bit really cracked me up 😂. You have put a lot of time and effort in this video. Well done, my friend!
RuneScape has been such a major part of my upbringing. I've played the game since 7th grade in 2004, and play to this day (RS3). I listen to this video every couple months while skilling for the nostalgia, and it also calms me down when I do. Thank you for making this!
OMG I remember when farming first released, we happened to be on the same server Zezima logged into and shortly after a huge crowd of players shows up following him around. It was surreal. Dude was like a celebrity.
Haven't played runescape in well over a decade. But it's still a big part of my life I always watch video on TH-cam.. this is so great so many feels thanks mote
Yes no other game had so much of my time than RuneScape. My gaming before and after RuneScape has totally changed. I was not a gamer after I was done with RuneScape back in 2000-2005. Many rage quit, frustrating game changes and deleting all my characters at random time I would never play again. I was aware they updated the graphics (now it’s called old school RuneScape or classic). It’s not the same game I used to be obsessed with.
@getoffthetip6748 I downloaded it not long after I made this comment. Accumulated 8 days play time over about 2 months hahaha I was on it quite abit. Took a break been on and off last 6 months. Still f2p got all stats over 60 just grinding mining which is soul draining. Once I get 60 mining off to members!! Can't wait!!!
Beautifully made! I would love to see a continuation of this in 2025 for the 2020-2025 period and every 5 years after. Cause, let’s be honest, everyone always comes back to RS. No matter how old we get or how long it’s been since we’ve played, you never truly quit. It’s more than just a game, it’s become our home.
What an amazing job done. The outro was so perfectly said and touched many of our hearts. This honestly made me realize what a big part of my life OSRS has been and how awesome the community is.
Another night of putting this on while I head to bed. Honestly never thought hearing about the history of RS would be relaxing enough to help me sleep after originally watching it a few years ago. Can’t wait for the updated version in the future!
Just watched this in 2024. This is such an amazing undertaking! It's so cool to see the evolution of both versions of the game, and the power struggles between playes, devs, and owners/financial interests. It really feels like OSRS is alive and well specifically because it is such a community-driven project.
I remember my buddy telling me about this game in 2005, running home and finding it, and trying to make an account. I couldn’t figure out how to do it- I was too young. All day I was mystified by the login screen - the two fires on each side of that login window. The next day I figured out how to make an account and the next week I barely made my way through tutorial island as a kid. That was the golden era: from then, to my parents buying membership for the first time, all my buddies from school online. Obviously Mote recognized in the video that things will never be the same. But a lot of us from that time were lucky a game like this came out. It stoked so much creativity and wonder back then, and we were fortunate to be around when it was at its peak.
So glad i have a piece of history in this video, I made the April fools video on the RuneScape themed theme park! You just blew me away and found all my old videos on my old TH-cam channel.
I used to walk to the library as a kid to play this game with all my friends. Now I play osrs on mobile to help stay awake with our newborn. This game (and the community) have been such a positive force in my life for so many years, and this video just drives all those good vibes home. Thanks, Mote.
That was the charge of RS no download meant you could play it on any computer and if your child hood was like mine didn't need to ask permission to download something to the computer.
I miss early Runescape. I never got to play classic, I started about 2 months after RS2 came out. I really liked it back then because you could make a name for yourself and really climb the High Score rankings..I remember seeing gearshifter training range on hill giants in early RS2. Dude was a nice guy. Then later on I linked up with this guy talon prime who used to help manage larryr nature business and he got me a little gig helping to manage all the people running ess. to her in Karamja.
Really good work! Very enjoyable to watch. Kinda heartbreaking when the "squeal of fortune" came out tbh, but glad OSRS has a decent playerbase/history
Watching the 2012 portion of the video reminded me why I pretty much stopped playing that year, lmao what an absolute joke that year was. Absolutely beautiful to see how OSRS has evolved over the years though

I cannot thank you enough for the effort and time you put into making this. Glad to see you are back and I hope you and your family are doing well.
Very similar time line here. 14-15 years off and on here

Are Dragon Masks still worth 300k?
Can you still swap scam people by trading? 🤣
Does the NPC still shout „Senventior Disthine Molenko“?
Can you finally copy paste stuff into the chat or do people still use chatbots to sell their stuff in World 1 by the left bank in Varrock? 🤣

I legitimately never knew the reason for that memorial hill in the wilderness, I’ve been wondering for more than 10 years who or what that was for, and now I finally know that it was to memorialize a dedicated and loved player. Awesome video, man
It's false, the statue was in the game two years prior to The Old Nite's death.
!!!!!!!
You aren't alone, there are so many people that enjoyed this game for a long time!

I can relate to a lot of this

Runescape, specifically osrs, gives me a huge sense of calm when I grind for stuff, for example, right now I'm farming pure essence, extremely simple task, repetitive and boring for most of you... but meanwhile I do it, I think of my life, my business, my job, my wife and kids... gives me a very weird head space where I can regroup myself and follow a plan.
Some of you play with the max optimization, some of us just like grinding :) what ever you like, thanks for playing and keeping this game alive!
Grinding in runescape can be sort of a form of meditation.

All day I was mystified by the login screen - the two fires on each side of that login window.
