    My grandma taught me howto knit when I was a little kid. Of course I got away from it, but this makes me feel like taking it up again. She'd be so thrilled with this. Were she still alive she would have turned 100 years old on May 7th.

    I can confidently say that this is one of the better sock knitting videos online. Others use advanced techniques or vague explanations, or simply expect you to buy a pattern and follow along! Thank you so much!

    I've wanted to knit my own pair of socks for two years now and it always seemed so daunting and frustrating. I remembered your "how to knit and how to purl" videos a while back and came back to your channel to find a sock tutorial. Love how you break this down and make it doable! Love the subtle knitting humor. Best tutorial for socks I've watched. THANK YOU! BLESS YOU!

    I’ve been knitting a long time, but self taught before the days of internet and have had my own style, albeit incorrect. Today I watched some of your videos with renewed desire to knit more conventionally. Thanks for your concise teaching style. I’m lucky enough to own about 10 DPNs of every size which offers more flexibility. I use 6 DPNs whilst doing heel gusset; one for the heel pocket, one for each of the sides and 2 for the front. It makes it very easy to see exactly what’s being done.

    i've only recently started learning how to knit-- i've been crocheting for years and i just could NOT figure out how to hold my yarn and get things speedy while knitting-- and finally figured out i can knit continental style. i'm not great but i'm getting better. anyway, the way you're purling continental is BLOWING MY MIND, i love it, i wanna try it right now

    Thank you for putting together such elaborate videos, I started knitting just 1 week ago and my new years resolution this year is to knit myself a pair of socks and your videos have totally explained what I need to conquer first before I'm ready to take on this task. It'll be a long journey but I'm 1 scarf in so far! Lol

    THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I started a Christmas stocking for my husband, grossly overconfident about how easy it would be to wing it. Why I didn't use a pattern, I don't know. Anyway, I got to the heel turn and chickened out. That was almost four years ago. Then I recommitted myself to knitting a couple of weeks ago and found your video online this morning. Tonight, I'm making my heel flap and turning it, if all goes well. Thanks so much for your straight-forward advice, and willingness making a goof here and there. As an inexperienced knitter, it's good to learn how to work through the little blips, rather than give up. Thanks!

  • @hippychick9106
    @hippychick9106 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Oh, and the standard for the flap is same number of rows as stitches...so 20 stitches, 20 rows....on a real sock if you had 32 stitches, 32 rows. It can be adjusted and increased to add extra stitches to fit the heel diagonal of course. Just a tip...if you slip first stitch it makes picking up half the stitches of the gusset a breeze!! You rock!!

    Hey Ryan, I like your freestyle teaching, I somehow understand a lot better this way rather than blindly following patterns, I actually understand now how the heel flap sock works.
    So far I only knitted toe up socks but never cuff down, I definitely wanna try this out to add onto my knitting belt. Don't worry about the few neglects, it's totally understandable, you're doing a great job helping understand the structure better and just go with the flow without being too scrupulous about the pattern. Thanks, and keep it up, bro!

    k2tog = ktog then k1

    also the k2tog side is the one where you knit to it and the ssk side you start with the decrease! it was confusing for me so here you go

    Hi - a fab clear video - THANKS! Top tip; I use elastic bands (that the postman drops) to keep my stitches on the needles that are ‘resting’’ - just pop one end of the band over one end of a needle and the other end of the band over the other end of the same needle…if it’s a big elastic band, fold over to make it tighter…this is also a good trick to keep knitting on needles in your bag 😊❤️

  • @zabaglione
    @zabaglione 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It's only 'cos I've seen other sock patterns that specify 40 st to start with for a worsted weight yarn and 4mm needles that I know where to start LOL! Plus you say you need 5 DPNs and work on 4! Apart from that I LOVED the lack of drama over the various sections and you make the least amount of fuss over the Kitchener stitch that I've ever seen on a knitting blog/tutorial. I really enjoyed the two parts, thank you. My criticisms are meant to be constructive. Us novices need a bit of detail!
    Funnily enough, in the UK at least, knitting socks was seen as men's work. It was only during WWI when all the men went off to the trenches that women started knitting socks in large numbers as they made them to send off to men at war.

    I tried knitting another sock from another pattern, I ended up trying to knit the heel on needles two and three! Lol. It didn't turn out that bad, but I had to improvise and I am pretty sure I would never be able to recreate what I did. Your videos made it so simple to make a pair of socks for my Mom for her birthday! I was super stressed and my stress melted once I watched your videos on knitting socks and in the round! First time using double pointed needles too! Thank you so much!

    I actually picked up learning to knit again just to knit socks. I have bought so many great sox, but they all have elastic, these days, which doesn't work for me. I gave up after watching a number of instructional videos but, after watching yours, i think I might give it a second chance. Thank you.

    I love your video, it helped me knit my first ever pair of socks on circular needles. I first learned how to knit socks on Straight needles so this was a big milestone for me! I don’t know if you’ll see this comment, but I’m really curious if you’re using sport/DK (3) or worsted (4) yarn. You didn’t mention in the video. I knit my socks using worsted (4) yarn and 5mm needles bu my sock seems too large. Wish you’d mention what size yarn and needles you used!

    Great tutorial to breakdown the different parts and demystify the “scary sock” Lol. But you should clarify you’re using worsted weight yarn for demonstration purposes (and perhaps one practice pair),which are not socks you can actually wear in shoes. Also that real, wonderful, wearable socks, made with sock yarn, would be in the range of 56 to 72 stitches cast on...thanks again for such a great job!!

    • @lydiahalick5608
      @lydiahalick5608 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I have 70 or so stitches, during the part where you make the bubble for the heel do you know if I keep that part the same (number of stitches left unknit/purled before turning)?

    I am a beginner knitter and my goal is to make a pair of socks, I’ve learn the knit stitch and purl stitch and just practiced knitting in the round. Great instructions. My only question is I was hoping for a step by step instruction on knitting socks . You have already started the sock and I don’t know where to begin. ? Did you do knit- purl -knit - purl to start with ? 40 stitch divided by four needles ? Then what stitch did you transition into?

    I’m doing this with chopsticks and yarn that’s too thick... The chopsticks aren’t that bad but the “sock” is huge so it’s gonna be more like a slipper. But honestly I’m having so much fun. Can you tell I’m a beginner? Lol

    I wish you had started from the beginning of the socks!
