  • A comprehensive knit-along showing you everything you need to know about knitting socks toe-up.

    Read the instructions on my blog: nimble-needles...
    This is a very detailed step-by-step tutorial on how to knit socks toe-up. I tried to incorporate all the little choices you have along the way and how to adjust things so you get socks that fit. I also picked a toe and heel pattern that is very versatile yet easy to knit.
    I created this toe-up sock knitting pattern myself, even though it is of course based on everything all the generations before me did.
    Chapters:
    0:00 Introduction
    1:15 Materials you need for toe-up socks
    2:06 Calculate the size of your socks
    5:15 Knitting the toe-box
    16:34 The foot
    20:10 Calculating the start of the heel & height of gusset
    25:55 How to knit the gusset
    34:00 How to turn the heel
    44:11 How to knit the heel flap
    56:12 Knitting the calf
    57:32 How to knit a calf gusset
    1:03:01 How and when to knit the cuff

    One thing I really appreciate about your beginner tutorials is that you don’t just teach the pattern itself, but also skills that can be applied to any pattern, especially when it comes to adjusting patterns to your own measurements

      Definitely...it can be difficult to incorporate all the different levels but I certainly try my best!

      I love that too! I am way too much of a beginner to add in all the math, so I probably will just follow a pattern as-is a few times just to get a feel for the process, but when I’m ready to level up to a higher quality sock that fits better, I know exactly where to go to learn to do that! I love his teaching style so much.

I especially appreciate that you explain WHY you do the things you do, it makes it so much easier for me to understand how knitting actually works. Socks,,especially toe up,,are one of my favorite things to knit~I was just thinking last night that I haven't made any in awhile~!!
    I'm now teaching my 9 year old grand daughter how to knit,and she's learning SO FAST~!! Her mother,,my daughter, also knits,in fact,she got me into it. Turns out,it's WONDERFUL for people with ADHD,,I find I stay focused for hours,knit EVERY day for 4 years now,and haven't gotten bored or lost interest. My daughter and grand daughter also have ADHD(surprise,surprise,,it runs in families!!) and knitting works better than any medication,,which none of us take.
    So,there may be 3 generations of Clarke women who have short attention spans,,but we're also 3 generations of knitters~!!🧡🧶🥢 I Love it~!!😄

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      love that story, Vivienna. And even though I don't have ADHD, knitting still helps me tremendously to gather my thoughts. It is such a wholesome hobby, isn't it? :)

    This is a wonderful tutorial! I'm only 20 minutes in, and I've learned two new skills. I've made 3.5 socks so far, and I don't especially like the "squared pointy" toe box that you get from increasing every other row from the start. Your technique of increasing every row until you've doubled your starting stitch count makes a much nicer toe box. Weaving in the new color is a great technique as well. Thank you SO much for all your videos!

    I'm very excited to knit my first pair of socks! Such an easy to understand video will make it fun. I've been waiting to get the self-striping yarn in the mail from Denmark to a small town in the Midwest US. Maybe it will arrive today... Thank you so much for this excellent video. I will look into the Patreon too.

    Hi Norman, I hope you can read this message ,(you must get many per day) first of all many thanks for the absolute great quality of tutorials, even for experience knitters your atention to details is very useful. Just one Question: Why don't you include a negative ease on the stitches cast-on calculation? What is your opinion on that regard? Have a great day.

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just to make sure. I think negative ease is just such a fishy term nobody really can capture in absolutes. So I stopped using it. It's just confusing and inaccurate. How far do you stretch a swatch when blocking and how much of the stretch left is negative ease? Never found an answer to that.

    Maravilloso tutorial!!!! Gracias!!!! He tejido calcetines varias veces pero siempre con patrón. Ahora he entendido perfectamente como se construyen y como adaptarlos a diferentes grosores de lana, agujas y medidas personales. Para mi sorpresa, el idioma no ha sido ningún problema!!!! Muchísimas gracias otra vez. Saludos desde Granada, España.

    Norman, I'm not a beginner sock knitter, but fit issues are no joke! I'm still learning how to fit my socks and thus got lots of practice with the parts of the sock top down. Toe up, I need to make more.

    you're my favorite knitter to follow along with. can you make a two at a time magic loop sock knitting video? there are other TH-camrs who have these videos but your socks are much prettier than the pattern that I purchased with the accompanying video from another designer. your projects are always aesthetically pleasing to my eye.

      hm..one day in the future. But not anytime soon. these tutorials take a loooot of time and effort (40hours+) and it's quite exhausting.

    I have saved this video as I plan to make these. Just find your videos slightly confusing sometimes but only co you use the continental knitting method and I of course use the UK method. However instructions are still applicable to any method so thank you Norman!! Have a great day!!! 👍 x

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ah...sorry for that Jan. But as you might understand, recording such a long video twice is a little bit too much effort. Besides, my bumbling attempts at knitting English style might be even more confusing, haha!
