    • @UmmYeahOk
      @UmmYeahOk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Runco990 you don’t know pain until you’ve owned an ironically named car like a “Triumph.” Imagine black vinyl seats, when it’s 104 degrees out. That’s not including the heat index which probably surpassed the 115-120 mark. With no AC, you would be dreaming it had been sitting in a parking lot all day by a beach! Most triumphs are convertibles, but if you were lucky enough to own one of the more rarer GT6es, you lacked that ventilation. Instead, you had to endure the pathetic cardboard (seriously it was cardboard) transmission tunnel covers, which enabled engine heat to easily pour into the cockpit, that is, of course, only if the car isn’t stranded alongside the roadway. You could get an aftermarket plastic one, but that only made it mildly more bearable. JDM companies like Mazda and Nissan murdered the British auto industry with being slightly more advanced in every other aspect. This was one of them.

      If everything was still tight, they handled insane, dead flat cornering at any speed you would dare, nimble as could be, super lite and fast transitions easy as pie.. you could power oversteer if you had one of the torquey ones with the 13b or the turbo 86 ...steering felt great as well as long as everything was still fresh and not all worn out... I used to live in an area that had awesome roads with swicthbacks and s turns galore...the rx7s were a hoot to carve up those roads with..you felt like you were in a real sports car in that time period, there was few that could equal the enjoyment for price spent.

    Okay here is a true story; I learned manual transmission on my mom's 1981 RX7 and everything you said was of course quite correct. However since this was my very first time driving a clutch I had no other reference point so when my mother said "you have to be up above 1500 RPMs to start off" I just figured this was normal. So yeah I got used to very quickly driving one of the harder to drive sports cars of the time however she was just so fun. Espically when I figured out this engine wants to rev high to do anything. Yup, 5000 RPMs is where the fun begins and BTW that is also right about when the secondaries open up fully on the four barrel carb. In fact they had a split size setup, small primaries and much larger secondaries that some of the American 60s and 70s V8's had to promote better fuel economy when not hard on the gas. Really wish we still had that one in the family as they are such great track day and weekend fun cars. Oh yeah, I am old AF this was back in 1983 when the car was kinda new still. But those darn apex seals...

      Hey I had an RX7 in college and the secret was that carburetor - the car would lift off the ground when the secondaires opened up OMG. There was no internet and no way to know what you owned really. It just looked cool and drove fast and was fun AF to drive.

      This cracked me up.
      My mother also had an '80s RX-7. When I got my first vehicle, a used '91 D21, she jumped in it for a test drive.
      It didnt have a tach, because the original owner was too cheap for that option. No one knows how high that little four banger revved, but after she was done the general consensus was that I should put a new clutch in it, I needed new rear tires, and my mother had a lead foot.

      My mom taught me to drive on her RX-8, and damn was that rough. I stalled and burned the clutch more times than I'd like to admit, but, once I got the hang of it, that little Wankel just wants to run. Both of my parents used to have RX-7s, back before I was born, and we've still got my dad's old FB, albeit not in good condition-it's been sitting outside with a seized engine probably longer than I've been alive, but we're gonna try to restore it soon, that or build it into an autocross car. Either way, it's probably getting a new engine, and it's probably getting a more modern one at the very least, so it's unlikely to still have a carb.

    I miss my 81 Rx-7 I loved that car and bought another one for parts. I eventually had to give up on it though as I was 19 and couldn't keep sinking money into it and there was so much rust. It was so much fun to drive and so satisfying to rev the engine. The worst part though was when someone would move it a short distance in the winter to make room for parking w/o letting it warm up. The engine would flood then you would have to put a little AT Fluid in the oil pull the choke let it warm up and watch the clouds of smoke.
    Nice video as always and I always get excited when i see one of these 1st gen Rx-7s has survived

    1 revolution of the engine is 3 combustion cycles. So multiply the engine size by 3 and the mpg makes slightly more sense, and the tq figure make less sense

    • @carlosandleon
      @carlosandleon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nope, not 3 combustion cycles. had the same mistake before. Look at an animation and observe how much the middle crankshaft turns while you count the explosions. It just makes as many combustion cycles as a two stroke

    • @TheRamsberg
      @TheRamsberg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The "crankshaft" is spinning faster than the rotor, so, in effect, the rotor is overdriving the output shaft, reducing the torque, but giving the same horsepower.

    • @shoogledonk
      @shoogledonk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In terms of tuning, a traditional 4-stroke engine needs 720º of operation to complete a power stroke. A rotary will complete 2 power strokes in 720º. So in terms of selecting fuel injectors etc., rotary engines are double their listed displacement.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't measure an engines displacement by its combustion cycles per rotation. If you did every piston engines displacement would be listed radically different than they are.
      The rotary managed to pack in more combustion events than a typical 4 or 2 stroke but a 2 stroke has more events than a 4 stroke. Would you consider a 250cc 2 stroke to actually displace 500cc just because it has twice the combustion events as a 4 stroke?
      2 strokes and rosaries both tend to make more power for a given displacement because they happen to enjoy more frequent combustion events, to the point that sanctioning bodies handicap both types with some sort of penalty. Placing 250cc smokers along side 500cc thumpers in several types of bike racing or placing 1.2/1.3L mazdas along side 2.0-2.6L or small turbo competition.
      But none of that actually changes the Wankels actual displacement any more than you would change the measured displacement of a 2 stroke.

    • @zacht9447
      @zacht9447 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The actual displacement is always 3 times what they say though it's 3.3 liters not 1.1 liters the "1.1 liter" is simply a way to get around the taxes
