Sadly, I totalled out my 1993 RX-7 R1 packaged Red Beauty on my 21st Birthday on a wet road. Today at 40 yrs old, it still haunts me and I occasionally shed a tear or two when reminded of it. If you've ever owned a Gen 3 RX-7, then you can relate. With a boost controller, Greddy intercooler, Greddy Exhaust, race clutch and a tune, I was beating or keeping up with most anything that got next to me. Thanks for this video...it was bitter sweet!
I don't usually comment very often, but this such a cool series that Donut has going on here, please, don't stop making these, they're awesome and I always look forward to a new one. Also, an MX-5 episode would be pretty cool too.
My mom bought one brand new in 1981. We still have it, 90k original miles, an incredibly rare dealer option back seat, it has never broken down in almost 40 years. Hell it's still on its original apex seals. I'm inheriting it and that little car will never, ever leave my family. The one thing you forgot to mention is that a rotary engine literally cannot seize, no matter how hot they get, which makes them very safe for light aircraft use. And how could you not show clips of the posted off band saw engine note? Also, the top model of the first generation had four wheel discs. The others were front disc, rear drum.
I am by no means a rotary expert but I thought anything close to 100K miles on original apex seals is almost unheard of? I'm curious... how was the car driven during its lifetime?
Some more facts and misnomers. The First Gen RX7 introduced the first turbo model featuring a turbocharged rotary with a blowthru carb. That's why the Turbo FC is called the 'Turbo II'. The FD's twin turbo system was ANYTHING but a 'seamless' transition. Most owners opt for making the turbos non-sequential to ensure a smooth, predictable powerband. A common issue is taking a corner around 4000-4500 rpm would make the second turbo kick on and kick the car out due to the added power, so many just open up the second turbo full time, increasing spool time, but also raising predictability. This video was dope though.
Rotors Magazine True, but not my 99 Type RS with 99 spec turbos and the updated 16-bit ECU! Not a perfect transition but quite a lot smoother. Also, with a PowerFC you can smooth that transition to where you almost don't notice it. I would never recommend non-sequential if you have a working sequential system in place or one that can be easily repaired. Tune out the secondary spike! Sequential means full boost around 2000-2250 RPM. Non-sequential means full boost around 4000 with positive pressure around 3500. Not fun for a road car but okay for a track car as you will not dip below that.
The twins in non-sequential will certainly make full boost below 4000 closer to 3000rpm. Even in the sequential stock configuration once you transition the turbo stay in parallel mode unless you drop below 3500. That was done reduce the chances of what Rotor Mag was talking about. Personally I never found it that jarring but certainly a limitation in 1st or 2nd gear where the gears are fairly tall.
I found this channel just over a week ago, and have been binging on all these "up to speed" videos.. Thank you Donut 🍩 for all the entertaining videos!!
Just one of the many reasons I need to get an RX-7. I think I'll start with an FC, and eventually, a few years from now, I'll buy an FD. Tune the shit out of both, turn them into godly cars. I'll probably just keep the FC around for old time's sake, maybe give it to one of my future kids when they turn 18. Those things are fucking beasts, and we need to preserve every last one
It's fantastic because of the rotary.. Every rotary needs to reved or driven to the edge to maintain its performance..if u Nana pants it chances are you will cause damage to your engine.. Oil clogs.. Damaged apex seals an the list goes on.. All in all I love the rotary engine it's damb genius..

There great car's that have a very unique sound.
Hello Donut, I started watching your channel a few months ago. The video of yours I saw first was the 100th up to speed episode. I just loved it, for 2 things. The Godzilla and Pumphrey saying stuff like "MO POWA BABY" and "LIGHTNING". I simply love the way he narrates. I also love Nolan's videos sometimes and Jeremiah, he talks balls deep into the technical stuff which I love to learn very much. I like James's episodes the most, just because how he narrates stuff. ✌
I vividly remember the first time I saw a 100% factory stock third generation RX7 at a gas station at night in the mid 90's. I walked around it observing the gas station lights reflecting off its amazing curves. The body panel tolerances were perfect, the door opening mechanism was beautifully designed. I was so jealous of the dude who got in and drove away.
Because car companies have gone to shit lately. It used to be, you had the Japanese companies competing for track supremacy, with the Silvia family, everything Toyota made with a 4A-GE, the GT-R, and the RX-7. Then you had the American companies competing for pure, raw power and straight line speed. All the while, the regular sedans, trucks, and SUVs were pretty much just left alone, being made reliably and practically because, frankly, the people who buy those really don't care about power, about flashiness, or about any of the other things you look for in a performance car. Now, companies have almost completely ditched performance cars in favor of bland, characterless SUVs and crossovers
Used to work at a Mazda dealer. 2015-2018, people asked at least once a week when a rotary would be released again. I don't even think Mazda knows or wants to. It's sad, if they could work on it a little more it'd be a smash hit.

@@SicSemperBeats That's what's really changed about cars and car companies these days. Most performance car prices from back then, adjusted for inflation, come out to an average of about $10-15k, with some of the higher end ones coming out to closer to $20k. And it's not for lack of demand, either. Practically everyone is begging these companies to release affordable performance cars
@@jimlee21 A well built rotary is just about the best engine out there. That, and, everyone I've talked to who knows what a rotary is, is absolutely in love with rotaries, and I'm no exception. The RX-7 is an example of a well designed rotary. Reliable and powerful. The RX-8 is an example of a poorly designed rotary. Unreliable piece of crap with fuck all for power

I really be bumping that shit in my car and the crazy thing is it really sound crazy on my system I sit there waiting for 2 Chainz to rapping lol that's just me
The RX3 is one of the most beautiful japanese classics and so underrated. I only saw one once in 96 when I was 16, at a little used car lot. I stared at it so long I missed my bus to school lol
The FD Rx7 is my favorite. Glad the episode finally came around, albeit this one felt a bit rushed for such an iconic car. The break down on the Rotary engine was good too.
I grew to love the RX-7 through watching Initial D, I just really got drawn to it and again i'm also a sucker for pop up headlights. Along with this, my favourite male character of Initial D (Ryosuke Takahashi) is the driver of an RX-7, although not my dream one, both him and Keisuke still drive RX-7's. My dream is to own an RX-7 of my own someday, specifically the yellow FD3S that Keisuke drives and considering I live in England this may be a little more complicated but it's still a big dream of mine that I really want to keep aiming for.
One of the guys at my work knows 2 guys who have turned RX-7's into supercar slayers. One guy did it with an FD, the other, with a carbon copy of Ryosuke's FC. The FD is pushing 500 horsepower currently, and the FC is at 550. Apparently. the FC has already beat Lambo's
Please bring back Up To Speed! We need this Donut back in our lives! Strangely enough, COVID Donut was the best Donut. Yall were cranking out prime videos daily back then. Now we are lucky if we get one or two a week.
The RX-7 has to be one of my all time favorite cars. It's looks beautiful, sounds beautiful, and is fast and easy to work on an tune. Can't wait to get my hands on one. I honestly think it is completely worth the price.
It's not easy tune because one detonation and you are rebuilding the engine. Throw too much timing into a piston engine you get valve chatter, throw too much timing into a rotary and the chatter will the apex seals flying out the tail pipe or trashing your turbo.
@@3a.m.284 awesome but actually i mean that yeah i can fine with like 1.800€ but actually I can't afford it cause gasoline prices are way to high in Greece and i want it for daily 😩

that would be a short video being as the AE86 is one generation. it'd be simply "Everything you need to know about the toyota corolla" which would be an intoxicatingly boring video except for the short segment about the AE86... the sprinters in japan were pretty cool through the years, but nothing worth remembering.
Street Lethal Garage I'd beg to differ, the generations before and after the AE86 were great cars. The TE27 is still one of the most beautiful Corollas, and the still 4A-GE-powered, now FWD AE92 and AE111 Corolla Levins and Sprinter Truenos were still hot and fun cars. Definitely worth remembering. Maybe an "Everything You Need To Know About the Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno" video would be better
The Rx8 made more power than any other naturally aspirated 13b with 231hp. The engines greatest weakness however were the side exhaust ports. All the previous rotarys had their exhaust ports in the rotor housings alowing for better flow, lower engine temps, and more POWER if turbocharged.
Yes, the motor is better, (except in term of reliability), but no stock turbo, and, and that is the most important point, all the rest of the car is worse

Its quite an underated car and yes it has its share of flaws, like every car in the world has, but it is a gorgeous looking car and it is the definition of a pure sports car.
Mazda hasn’t given up on it, Engineering explained did an episode talking about how new skyactic technology may utilize rotary

😂😂😂 So true!
A video about rotary engines without the beeeeaaautiful sound of a rotary engine? Really, guys? You even talk about the 787 and don't put a single second of it revving the fuck out of those rotors?
Damn.
Also, I miss the box showing James' twitter and name.
This Igor dude got a point, at least start sampling some sound clips throughout the video instead of just talking 100%.
Igor Napol true
yeah, while you're at it, master "mastering" (pun intended)
Erm... I didn't get this one, dude. Sorry.

Mike Arredondo uh he looks like a 30 yr old man who dresses like a 22 year old in senior year.
Ballinvsxx what does a thirty year old suppose to wear? He's normally dressed in my opinion.
ballinvsxx shit i'll be 30 in a couple months, I need to know what a 30 yr old is supposed to wear!

The 10AE had 1500 of them made, the Infini was 1400, the GTUs was 1100 and the final edition vert was 150. HOWEVER, the GTUs had 100 of them that were not restamped with new vins, making them the rarest fc ever produced by the factory.
The break down on the Rotary engine was good too.
it's great to see an early Donut Media video and to see how his delivery has changed over the years!
@@Spike00773 It's visually a copy. Same hood, wing, etc., even the same stickers, minus the Red Suns one

@@Elmom_ Project D, of course. The Red Suns FC was completely stock on the outside

The way you slowly explained how it died, made me sad to my core .😔 I felt that, good job 👏 guess who’s buying a rotary!!
THEw5000 Totally true!
Γιώργος Τσακίρογλου Yep
It's not easy tune because one detonation and you are rebuilding the engine. Throw too much timing into a piston engine you get valve chatter, throw too much timing into a rotary and the chatter will the apex seals flying out the tail pipe or trashing your turbo.

6:16 im not a huge Mazda fan but your 110% right. Rx8 was a piss poor excuse for a rx7 replacement. Especially when you realize it's four door setup was basically an extra cab option on a pickup truck...
Ugly as sin and the engine is garbage but the chassis is actually better.

This was the first Donut Media video I ever watched...Brings me back
Do the ae86!
PLEASE. Theres never enough Hachi Roku
that would be a short video being as the AE86 is one generation. it'd be simply "Everything you need to know about the toyota corolla" which would be an intoxicatingly boring video except for the short segment about the AE86... the sprinters in japan were pretty cool through the years, but nothing worth remembering.
I vouch for that as an owner of an AE111 BZR
BZRs are gorgeous cars. I really love the front end of the Levin, it's like a FWD S15
Takahashi brothers have entered the chat ,I wonder how their reaction would be on a a 7 litre v8 corvette !

Hello. As I enjoy all of your videos, I would love to see a standalone video for the RX-8. Its quite an underated car and yes it has its share of flaws, like every car in the world has, but it is a gorgeous looking car and it is the definition of a pure sports car. Moreover it is a joy to drive and it is officially the last car in the world that uses a rotary engine, as we are heading full speed into the electric car era. I really hope that you will find the time someday to make a full video for the RX-8 also. Thank you.
