- The Beast is a car like no other. Registered as a Rolls-Royce coupe, it holds under its bonnet, a fiery 27,000 cc Merlin engine from a Spitfire. Is it as exciting as it sounds? Is it a death trap? Why is it so long? And what happens when you actually try to drive it on the public roads. Thomas and James are excited to find out. We hope you enjoy the episode. And then subscribe, silly.
A huge thank you to the owner Martin who allowed us to film his car.
And to Shmee150 for joining us in the beginning!

I know 😂 and making him drive on the wrong side of the road 😂😂😂. Passenger is so laid back and relaxed by contrast 😂
Met John Dodd many years ago whe I took my BMW with a diff problem to a garage in Spain. Didn't realise it was his garage or even who he was before I got there. But by the time I left I'd had the full tour of the beast and heard all about it for a good 2 hours. He was a real character who loved to tell his story.
If that is true then that's such an awesome story!

Low-key love what the current owner has done with The Beast. The OG incarnation was kinda too gaudy with the extra headlights lol.
Yeah it looks great! Much better now
Those extra headlights made the car look like something out of Monsters Inc😂
The OG headlights reminded me of the Family Truckster wagon from Vacation (1983).
yeah it looks more like a serious car and not a giant toy, the paint choice makes a huge difference too, looks more executive
Well, he actually bought it as it is now, as far as I know. You read in a website where the car was auctioned and in the pictures at the auction it was exactly as it now. Great deal as well, he got it for 72k $.
This is a great tribute to our father. He was a crazy dad to be sure. The car always turned heads. We'll done chaps you did an excellent job I think he would be smiling at this. Thanks again David dodd

This is without a doubt, the single most INSANE vehicle you guys have ever featured.
Dodd was a madman.
Now if only they reviewed the Viper engine motorcycle
Now they just need to feature the Roadog xD

Can we also appreciate how architecturally excellent the owner’s house is? Those beams and brickwork!
It’s for sale at the moment, stunning house not to give it’s precise location away (it’s in an area of a recent omaze house with a indoor pool and not too far away from a legendary rock guitarist house 😉🤫 )

Not really, seems pretty ordinary.
You want me to ask for his number?
that M5 joke had me in tears lmfaoo

that wasn’t even a joke
The best part is that it’s 300 lbs lighter than the new m5

I was in the petrol station in Churrianna,Malaga around 2006/7 when I heard some serious power pull in on UK. plates. Yeah, that was weird. Watch Jonny Smith drive this car on Late Brake Show a year ago. He looks relaxed and said it drives like his 1968 Dodge Charger once you get going. That village is about 15mins from me - I didn't know The Beast lived down in our neck if the woods now - I might have to decamp to the pub on the green. John Dodds rebuilt my dads 1968 jenson interceptors gearbox in the late 70's, and always the showman he had it delivered to santa pod during a race weekend by light aircraft(that used the strip during the lunch hour to land and take off)
My dad was race director at the pod at the time.
In period he had the speedo gears rebuilt so it massively over read, then would touch 200 mph for journalists (while doing a true 140mph) trust me the noise and vibration dulled your sensation of speed, so 140 mpg would have felt like 200mph.
The body was built by a company called fibreglass repaires in bromley london Who just happened to be owned by Bob and Roy phelps who also owned santa pod from the late 1960 to the early 1990's.
What a legend.
Great info thanks for sharing 👌
This geezer who lived in my street took me to santa pod as a a kid to see him race his car. It was called the devil. It was beautiful. It had an exposed huge V8 engine all chromed with a blower and artwork on the body of a woman on an altar with the devil standing over her. I dunno how he could afford this car as he only drove a bread van.

This gives me a new appreciation for how quiet and smooth running a standard combustion engine is. I thought my V6 jeep was loud at times. this is like having 4 air horns blaring in your ear constantly.
And then there are electric cars. Silent, more powerful, and a teen can drive them safely.
@@andrasbiro3007 oh yeah that's why teslas are the brand with the highest rate of accidents by far in the US.
teens should be limited to 60hp cars honestly.
@@andrasbiro3007 I can agree with the first 2 but safer? Absolutely not. A car, regardless of battery or combustion Is a several ton machine with explosive components. If you are driving 70Mph on the highway in either car and get into a crash, you will NOT walk away unharmed. I'm not sure where you got the safer part from, I can only assume you saw tesla's average safety score and took that as "word of god, this is fact."
A V12 should be a smooth ride, that's why you use 12 cylinders, V6's aren't very balanced compared to a inline 6 (which a V12 is just two inline 6's side by side), but they're smaller and fit in to the engine well of an inline 4 chassis, you usually mount the engine on rubber and add heavier counter weights on the drive shaft reducing the torque to reduce vibration.
@@GraveUypo 60hp??? i dont even think you could go highway speeds

The first time I actually saw someone driving a car for real the way people drive in movies. Seesaw that steering wheel.

Just about anything without power steering does that. Since power steering has become ubiquitous it hasn't been necessary to gapple with the wheel just to go down the road.

Fun fact: The Rolls-Royce Meteor engine was so powerful that some of the members of test crews for the British Crusader and Cromwell cruiser tanks were injured during test drives. The engine had to have a limiter put on and the top speed of the tanks reduced so that the crew wouldn't be thrown about while driving. The tanks were able to go so fast, for the day, that the tank would de-track itself when turning at too high a speed. The Meteor would also go on to propel the Cold-War era Conqueror tank destroyer, which was a whopping 64 tons(71 short, 63 long). The Conqueror was able to go 35 km/h despite it's weight and size due to the Meteor M120 engine.
This is the British version of 'Murica!

🏴 🇬🇧
It truly is.
I swear I said that in my mind when I saw the thumbnail, I thought: "27L V12? Murica yeah!" just before I realised it was actually BRITISH!
So much so that they put that engine into the P-51 Mustang.
I have a 1921 Hispano Suiza H6-they made it with a modified engine from the WWI French fighter planes. One of the fastest cars in the world at the time and a complete animal today. The engineer Mark Birkigt was a genius and so many innovations came out of HS from the era. Unbelievable what engineers can do when they put their minds to it…
It's mainly whether they are allowed to create stuff like this or not, sadly
The Napier Railton and some land speed record cars were all aero engined.
A Griffon powered Beast Mk2 would be a logical progression.
Congratulation to this beautiful and rare car!🎉 Gary from FL

As a boy I loved the whole concept and philosophy behind the beast. Years later, worked in a shop that had an Allison V12 on a stand that we were playing with. A supercharged version. Always thought it would be amazing to put in a car. Funny video, but looks like the beast could use a front end upgrade. That excessive camber, and the sloppy steering wheel, along with the high steering effort and slow ratio, makes me think that a power rack and pinion, maybe electric, and some sorting on the coils and control arms might be a good idea. Or....maybe just leave it like it is and let it just be the beast.
I saw that too, and knew someone would comment on it. It makes me wonder why these guys didn't. Buddy was terrified, and rightly so. That thing shouldn't be on the road until whatever is causing that camber and steering wheel wobble is addressed.
