1999 Nissan Maxima A32: Regular Car Reviews

- We review a Nissan Maxima with a manual transmission. This was one of the most memorable cars I drove this year. It's fast and fun and the Double-Cam V-6 loves being revved. It's like that Roadmaster with the 6-speed stick. Suddenly the motor is set free! And now you're about to go on Craigslist and search for Nissan Maximas with 5-speeds!
A $30,000 car in 1999, adjusted for Inflation, would be worth $43,259.78 today.
... I cared.
Top this...
And it still didn't have an independent rear suspension
+TJ Alexander
no one cares.
43,000 is about what a nicely trimmed ugly new Nissan Maxima costs today. I'm not so sure I would buy a new Nissan Maxima instead of a Ford Taurus SHO.
Or a Fusion Sport for that matter...the baby SHO
This review is accurate.
I have a 1999 Maxima 5 speed. It is one of the best cars I have ever owned; ..."Why" you ask?
That silky smooth engine, super reliability, quick and fast. How fast? You had better use cruise control because there is no engine or wind noise at high speed. Don't floor it in 1st gear or 2nd gear or you'll just burn up your tires. Passing slower cars? No drama, no loud engine noise; it just pulls like silk. With synthetic oil; I'm afraid this car will last forever.
This review is accurate.
mine is going strong at 216K
I have a 2010 maxima and 213k miles! Super reliable
Wow that's almost sad to read...

Nice reference 👌💯
bought one of these for $1200. 5 speed, 120k miles. absolutely no regrets.
Emitz same! I have a 98 that i got 2 yrs ago had 100k on it i put 70k on it... and she still runs smooth as ever
Same lol. I loved that car
I got a 98 5 speed same everything but its purplish brown (plum hint of brown)and chrome wheels doesn't look terrible better than stock and not a bad car other than wear from 270k mile of hard use from prev owner but not as fast as my 00 firebird 3.8 v6 (5.2ish 0 to 60)
3 years later, how did it turn out for you?
Are you me? That sounds exactly like my old 98. Same miles and price. Best car I've ever owned.
This is a regular car.
This is my comment.

still got the 99 maxima es . been in the family for it's entire 17 years . not a single flake of rust . engine still runs around everything on the road . love this car
Engine runs around everything on the road... have you ever even seen a car man?
MIne turned into a flintstone car. The engine still ran when I junked it at 235,000 miles though.
@@gtd360 flintstone car . Thats perfect
So regular... So.... Normal...

much of sedan! great affordable.
This is a true regular car.
I've seen these totally beat up and still going, with rotted fenders and quarter panels so bad that thoughts of how the bumpers are still attached make me pass them quickly. But boy have they endured.
One of the best put together cars ever imo. Shit is timeless
Consumer Reports rated these cars as having an "excellent" frequency of repair record!
First car I drove over 120mph. What a great motor!!
Same! I had a 5 speed, really pulled on 4th gear on the highway
Nice!! 140 mph on my 97 max
I saw the intro and knew " I'm alive again! "
I chuckled awkwardly at that intro because it's what I used to do...

I feel like my car is kinda like a modern equivalent to this. I have a 2012 Acura TL SH-AWD, but it's not the typical slushbox. It's equipped with the very rare 6-speed manual. Only about 1% of 4th gen TLs were made with a manual and I feel so lucky to have one.

And that's how I know that this is an episode of Regular Car Reviews.
This was Vince's car in the original The Fast & The Furious
Milos Mitrovic yeah but the car used in the movie was an automatic sadly
damn, that poor car got riced badly
The guy who built the fast and the furious one has a video on it, it was his personal car he loaned to universal for the movie. He also owned the orange supra, the maxima had a stillen supercharger kit on it and made around 260hp
@@pdusty7707 i am presently building Vince's maxima from the movie. But with a 6 speed and a supercharged stroked 3.5 to a 4.3 vq engine.
@@pdusty7707 yup, Craig Lieberman
1998 Lexus GS400 was the fastest Japanese 4-door available in north America. It's also the car i want you to review the most because i feel that car deserves a REAL and REGULAR review and not some boring SaabKyle review.
"The save file of cars"...I really like that. That got to me, sir.
My dad had a stick shift 2000 Maxima all through my childhood and teen years. That car carried me to so many school days and soccer games, and I learned to drive a manual on it. Sure, it constantly had a bunch of minor inconveniences, but that car hit 220k with no problem and was a joy to bring up to 60 pulling away from a deserted stoplight. Rest easy, old friend.
Yep, as I was about ready to say these are ultimate sleepers, he says it. Top speed 142 MPH, 189-200 HP.
The 2007 Spec R Maxima is 240 horsepower stock and comes with custom suspension, exhaust and a VQ V6 3.5 litre engine. The ultimate Maxima sleeper!
i have an 06 with a 6 speed. 265hp VQ35 surprises a lot of people
so is this the skyline for honor roll students?
A long time regular customer of ours had a '97 SE 5 speed that she finally traded in in 2018. When she got rid of it the car it had just over 294k on it and still ran like a top. Just 2 or 3 months before getting rid of it she put approximately $1,400 into it. She just loved that car! The car was rusting around the body, the clear coat was shot, and it had dents and scratches all over the place. But boy did it run like a sewing machine! We figured the body would disintegrate before the engine or trans ever bit the dust.
I feel like he gave us a spoiler to the next video
GT500 sometime in the future ;)
Holy crap. I just finished watching your "car show" and then stumbled upon this.
I bought myself a 5-speed 1999 Sterling Mist SE in Dec of '98. It didn't have leather or Bose (No highs, no lows, must be Bose). It was the only 5-speed on the lot. I'd never had anything with that much power (such as it was) before.
I never drove it in inclement weather and it never endured the sticky hands of children nor the slobbery tongues of dogs. I, myself, never ate in the thing.
I got bit by the WRX bug and I sold it 14 years later, almost to the day, with 47,000 miles on it.
The first guy who came to look at it arrived with cash a bit under my high asking price, thinking he'd talk me down. He took one look at it, said, "Jesus, this is clean", shoved all the money into my hand and begged me to keep it until he could get back from the bank with the rest.
I pretty much had that Max out of my head until I watched this.
Thanks a bunch. Sort of.
the intro song was based on power rangers dino thunder theme song im laughing so hard
Aka the best power rangers theme song
WHen I heard the intro song I instantly saved and liked for that reason. The best Power Rangers since the original

Nissan used to push in their advertising that these A32s were the equal of a Taurus SHO because while they made less horsepower and torque, they also weighed less. So the hp/lb ratio was comparable to the SHO. It's around 15lb/hp and ft-lbs for both cars.
A bubbling bottle of Mountain Aids.
You forgot to say "Nissan Maxima, the official car of the African American New Yorker"
+diamandis Nooooope that's the star of New York not the African American youth
+Apostle why does every black person have a maxima? Old POS ones or newer ones with rims I'll never figure it out.
+Dodge 318 Cummins it's a strong, dependable, powerful and good looking car. I understand it. My brother had one a generation newer than this one the a33 with the vq30 and a Manuel. Think it made like 200-230 I'm not sure but it pulled real strong.

My first car was a 1991 Maxima SE with a 5-speed and the '4DSC' stickers in the windows. Nice car.
My first car was an A32 Maxima with a manual. My second was an A33 and my third was an A34. Those generations were all awesome cars. Very sad they stopped putting manuals in these.
One of the few things that make mondays awesome! Thanks RCR!
That Falling Down Reference, Gold, glad someone else appreciates how good of a movie that was.
That intro song reminded me of the Power Rangers DIno Thunder theme.
That's because it was.
I wasn't sure at first.

Best Maxima is still the 5.5 Gen 3.5 6spd w/LSD.
For some reason, THIS is the Maxima I want. I've always wanted it. I have no idea why.
sloshman09 Nua. I just like it. Don't know why I like it, I just do. Kinda has a odd almost sleeper look. I really don't know dude.
You want my 99 180k black manual
RB25luv If I had more then $500 in the bank I'd throw it at you for the car.
+Jaster with 250$ I'm good
+RB25luv that low? What's wrong with it?
VG30DETT came in the Z32 Nissan 300ZX TT.
This engine is also basically completely unrelated to the Skyline's engine, the RB26DETT which is a straight 6.
6.6 seconds 0-60...? Thing is almost as fast as my Focus ST. That's absurdly awesome!
That is OPTOMISTIC, probably numbers from a "car rag" that received a "factory messaged" unit. I owned a 2001 Maxima (5-speed), car had 222HP. The Best 0--60 time that Car and Driver got was right around 7 sec. So, with about 30 MORE HP, the 0--60 time was actually slower? Someone is LYING! The 0--60 ACTUAL time for the '99 was more like in the high 8sec range. The car magazines actually admitted that the factory supplied vehicles (any make) were "doctored" to make the numbers look better while looking stock. Consumer Reports would have the REAL numbers because they BUY the test cars OFF THE DEALER'S LOT!
@@TheOzthewiz my daily 2000 maxima with auto trans had a 0-60 at 5.9. Not sure why yours was slower.
I had a 1996 manual. Loved it! Got it for $300 and EVERYTHING worked. AC, power windows and locks, power sunroof, heated leather seats! I wish I would have kept it. If I run into one today, I'd definitely buy it again!
Does she know that pipe is the overflow from a septic tank. Believe me it's true, I'm from the internet.
much sedan so regular much boring so sleeper
For what it is, I still really like the Maxima SE of this generation, particularly in black.
Regarding GM during that era, you had the Lumina LTZ and the supercharged Grand Prix GTP and Regal GS. No manuals in those, but the L67 3800s were quick.
Every time I see the cameraman's shadow in the frame, I have to look at his shadow and think, "That guy looks like a dork." and, "Is he riding a RAZER?!" Funny stuff.
Was that the Power Rangers Dino Thunder theme parody?

GRRRRRRRUNNNF MY CHILDHOOD, IT BURNS!!!
Former Maxima owner here, late 80s and early 90s generations. I've driven the A32 and A33. Guh-REAT used daily drivers if you can find one that hasn't been destroyed by every owner after the first (unlikely). Even in automatic flavor, though any halfway enthusiast will absolutely want the 5-/6-speed. You won't get great mileage (19 city abouts, 25-26 highway) but it's not bad, and they can be made to sound good. Plenty of room, electronics are reliable if they stay unmolested. I had 2 5-speed Maximas, both over 100k miles, and never needed to replace a clutch. Additional cost-saving upside: timing CHAIN...NO BELTS!!!
Review an Acura Legend! I thought my dad had the most awesome car when he got that.
i second that. 2nd gen legend
* Legend coupe. The coupe from the late 80's was dooooooopppppeeee
Bump. If you can find a First Gen that would be awesome. Or a Vigor. Such cool cars that people forget about till they see one driving around.
1994 Legend V6 2 door!
Thinking the exact same thing. . .
I drive a same-year i30 at work, and frankly even with an automatic it's still got more power than most modern economizers. Like, tire-spinning off the line get up n go. smooth as butter too. Honestly one of the nicest driving feels i ever felt.
I'm sitting in my 2000 Nissan maxima Gle loaded while typing this and laughing l love my maxima
I got a '98 UK-model Maxima SEL (fully loaded) that's same as your Infiniti i30 - bought it in London mid-2012 with 57k on the clock and when I moved back to NZ a year ago, no way I selling it to some British eejit, so I shipped it with all my stuff. Now has 77k on the clock, which is nothing by Kiwi standards.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I just wanted to say that I am SO glad you did this review! This was the first car my dad owned since moving to Canada and it's a car that I had many memories in and with. The nostalgia feels are real man!
Guess we're just forgetting the wonderful v6 accord? 😒
A V6 Accord with a manual transmission didn't come until much later. Previous models were auto only, and that transmission was so shitty there was a class action lawsuit against Honda for it.
+Tommy TwoGun the 99 Accord v6 did have a 5spd
+Isaac Sanchez thank you, just got off work lol
Isaac Sanchez
Wasn't that the coupe only? The sedan to my knowledge didn't come until later. All of that was optional on Accords, and the base engine is still a 4 cylinder. Still, the Maxima has always come standard with six cylinders and a manual transmission up until 2008 when it was CVT only. Many standard features on Maxima's for the longest time were options with other companies.
+Tommy TwoGun Maxima would smoke the V6 accord
Finally a Maxima! I had a 97 Maxima as my first car and freakin loved it! The save point and "car you drive when you want an SUV" analogies are perfect for this car. I hauled way more crap in my car than my friends Rangers and Trailblazers ever did and when it came time to upgrade I kept the Max for the inevitable day I have an accident and need to start over. For a 20 yr old car it's held up really well inside and out.
Mr. regular you should find an IS300/altezza to review
Bought that exact car brand new when it came out and still miss it. Great vid !!!!! A walk down memory lane.
It's the Z32 NA engine. The VG30DETT was in the Z32 Twin Turbo 300ZX, so North America DID get it.
VG had an iron block and VQ's are all aluminium. So no, we didn't get it.
ph13rwun you're right. I thought they had the VGs not the VQs.
+ph13rwun only the 2000 and 2001 vq the 95-99 had the iron block trust me I know
1990 1994 vg30E with optional 1992 to 94 SE had VE30DE all iron block.
all 1995 and up VQ are aluminum
+SicSB DaVinci the vg was the original platform butt you need to understand the NISSAN MAXIMA evolves they iron block VQ30DE into aluminum block in the 2000 maxima VQ30DE-K in 2002 VQ35DE
I feel like it had been forever since we had a review this amazing and wild. Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!

RB25luv I had an Acura CL that would've raced that. But she's gone now...
I drove a used 98 from 2007 to 2014. An iron tank. The motor would not die. I gave up on it when its floor rusted through and it could no longer pass inspection, but its major systems all worked. Awesome car

Holy shit, this is just like the reviews the channel started with, thank you RCR.
I know right. I really miss this style of review. His early videos are my favorites.
GM did have something more appropriate performance wise to the Maxima - the Grand Prix GTP and Regal GS. Mostly the prior though. It is just an auto and wasn't as nicely put together, but 3800 Series II supercharged engines were good for 240 hp and 280 ft lb of torque so they had some decent get up and go and the engines tended to last a pretty long time. They'd give the Maxima a bit of trouble off the line at least. Probably not much different from the SHO, other than they lasted longer (That plastic piece in the auto transmissions on those Tauruses was particularly stupid).
I have one of the "euro taillight" versions as Mr. Regular put it, a 2003 VQ35 Maxima with 255 HP and the 6-speed manual. Factory spec 0-60 was about 5.9 seconds. I can't find anything worthwhile to replace it that doesn't trade off reliability, high price tags, or the backseat and trunk space. These cars, once you find one with a stick, there's hardly anything like it and there's nothing that really competes with it for what it costs. And that sweet sweet VQ intake sound...
Mr. Regular is welcome to drive and review my Maxima, mine also has grinding synchros from an abusive previous owner (Not a principal, just a tuner who liked to race all his cars).
Man that's a much better episode than the last one, kudos 👍, so much references. And to be honest the classic format is funnier.
seems like it's time for Mr Regular to experiance the superiority of the Acura TL. the sportiest of the Japanese luxury sedans throughout the 2000s.
Why? Its just another Honda
@@cleverkitsune4302 And this is just another Nissan.
And that's fine. It's a good car.
Bullshit, those cars ride like garbage largely sure they pull nice but they dog out on the highway, in the maxima you can go ball deep rev happy and ALSO cruise, the TL only likes to rev and then lose all its torque past 80mph.
This maxima family sedan had 190 fwhp which was unheard of in the early 2000s..acura was around 150 power wise at the most
Last week, you lost me with the Porsche review, but had me rolling the entire time on this one!
Uhoh, somebody didn't like every single video. Can't please the entire world at once. Keep up the good work, Mr. Regular!
He says nothing about the white face gauges.
I got my 96 on the road (legally) yesterday. It was my friend's parts car. It sat for 7 years. I put about 1200 dollars of parts into it and it's great.
DO A FORD EXPEDITION

review a 2002-2003 Nissan Maxima !!
I had a 97 Maxima GXE a while back. Gold paint, two tone brown and tan interior with wood grain appliqués. It was a solidly built car that was very dependable and satisfying to drive. I miss it.
I love this maxima. I totalled mine 5 years ago and I'm still depressed over it.
Mine was totaled as well, I feel your pain friend
@John @Jrezky same guys :( in a parking lot lol...
Your "save file" point in this video is exactly why I've decided to always keep my 97 SE 5spd around. There's gonna be other cars come and go, but I'll just always have this one.
We have these in Australia. I think in the battle between Camrys, Magnas, Falcons and Commodores the Maxima came last.
ours dont look like that tho ay. the newer ones were good with the 3.5 litre from the 350z
Some of them looked similar, but a little more like a pulsar. I'm not saying they're bad, but they're certainly not popular here. I think they're priced higher than a camry? I have a 370z so I can appreciate the relationship haha
The Falcons and Commodores are in a bit of a different class because they're RWD and were derived into high performance cars like the F6 Typhoon/GT's and GTS's/Clubsports. They were built to perform well. The Magna was a legend but still FWD.
fucken oath i used to have a magna sports 3.5 that thing was a beast.
This is actually a North America only Maxima but our AU/NZ Maxima was sold in the states as the Infiniti I30. Still, both cars share the same platform and engines. Just different brands and different badges. Because apparently our Maxima was so upmarket in the states a Nissan badge wasn't good enough :P
Correction:
The 1998 Lexus GS400 was the fastest Japanese sedan in 1999. Its 4.0-liter V8 made 300 hp, 310 lb-ft of torque, with a top speed well past 160.
I still laugh my ass off at the gall of Nissan to call a big, heavy, FWD, CVT (for the current models) equipped automobile a "four door sports car"...
Since all cars can easily do over 100 mph & won't tumble over when you take a corner....All consumer cares now is sporty look, none of those driver feed back/ paddle feel shit, just sporty ad & sporty look. So.........Ya...... Sad day we live in as manual is dying as well.
In this year of 2016, even the shittiest of shit boxes roll off the factory floor capable of out-turning 95% of anything built before 1980. When the bar is set this high, it's hard to give a shit about the handling of any car you buy, because you know it will be good. As a result, manufacturers get to take advantage of a grey area of "sport" labeling. People will catch onto their bullshit eventually though.
Toyota has for build quality of 90s ford now, rubber and interior are pealing off and a 3 year rav 4 and made a shitty rwd car and killed it quick because it does not sell like a mustang. Mazda has awesome looks and interiors but are under appreciated, nissan tries too hard in looks and charges too much. Lexus is still a tank but is trying for a market that they cant compete in. All cars can take out a 80s Ferrari mow but are soulless hunks of metal, and instead of advertising performance all brands are talking about car play and how your car will practically drive itself and avoid an accident.
The 2007 Nissan Maxima Spec R actually lives up to the name
"... it's back to the 90s again... YES......Oh, my taint" kills me every time, haha. I too love 90s cars.

I'm 99% sure this engine was also the same engine that was in the 300ZX with and without the Twin Turbo, in 300ZX form it had minor alterations on the exhaust and intake to give it another 20HP.. Not sure why you think this engine was ONLY in the Maxima,
+tyler5619 NOPE, the VG30E was in this Maxima, the VG30ET (T for turbo) was the turbo version fitted into the 300zx (Z31) - they used the same SOHC engine block with and without a turbo, the VQ wasn't introduced into a 300zx until the (Z32) which was a DOHC engine. As a past owner of a 350z I am familiar with Nissan engines.. Research involves more then pulling up a Wikipedia page, you have to actually understand what you are looking at to get an answer.
That wasn't even the point, the point is that the the VG30E was in this Maxima, the VG30ET (T for turbo) was the turbo version fitted into the 300zx (Z31) - they used the same SOHC engine block with and without a turbo. The VQs are a total side point of this argument..
VG30E were in second and third gen maximas.
I had the 02 le which i bought new (only new car ive ever bought). It was awesome. I upgraded the shocks and swaybars and added very lightweight forged wheels and it totally solved the torque steer issue. Plently of power, very smooth, and fun to drive.
"schrodingers bang buddy" ROFL!!
Right? Brilliant!
For any one considering one of these with an automatic transmission.
These were produced before Renault bought Nissan.
The transmission is the traditional automatic.
It is NOT a CVT.
The transmission is good for a very long time.
I loved my 1998 Max but holy jeebus after owning it for 8 years, babying it, only taking it to Nissan dealers for the first 5.5 years for maintenance, and at around 180k miles, she just quit. Told me "yup, I'm done". Things started to stop working one by one. A/C, water pump, fuel pump, radio, power windows, not since my Buick have I've seen a car just quit life lol. That's when I took a chance on Detroit steel, a 2006 Pontiac G6 (which I got cheap, I guess they werent selling too well). Now 10 years later at 190k miles and after 2 major rear end collisions, and a shit ton of recalls, the only problems are the power windows are quitting and when the battery is low, it makes the car go NUTS, honks, headlights flashes, gets all demonic. And needs wheel alignment every 5-8k miles it seems (Pre-rear collisions). But I would never in a million years think that GM could actually make something "good" as in made to last, who knew!? lol
wow, and I thought the g6s were chinsy. I guess any car can last a while if you take care of it
+TempestZero oh it's semi-chinsey but it's 3.5 v6 is perky, what really kills it though is its HORRENDOUS electric power steering
All of those repairs are extremely cheap except possible A/C compressor. Which of course I don't need. I'll keep fixing the maxima 50 bucks at a time.
ldisc66 MY 1999 MAXIMA HAS 346,8O6 MILES NOW AND IT'S RUNNING STRONG
Mine was unfortunately an automatic but it was still one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. Comfortable, reliable, decent handling, and even with the auto it was still plenty quick. If I could find one with the manual I’d snatch it up in a heartbeat.
Are those DRIVING GLOVES?
I love that how regular the car is adversely effects how regular the review is.
CHIP IN THE KEY
i had a 97 maxima "sport" trim and i loved that car back then. i gave it away at 230,000 miles and the kid drove it to chicago and had it for a few more years.
Do the 5th gen!!!!! It's a little sexier!!
This was a great car when it was out, very enjoyable to drive. My best bud had one that he ended up doing up with performance parts from Stillen. Sounded great, moved very quickly, handled awesome.
You should drive an Acura Vigor! It has a straight 5
As opposed to a v5?
+ItBurnsSomehow it exists
+ItBurnsSomehow it does exist, besides, how else should he put it? it has a 5? 5 what???
Eric the car guy has one and him and Mr. Regular need to do a podcast already
He's also building a Ford Fairmount with a carburated turbo 302.
That episode MUST happen!!!!!!
You will never get enough credit for the phrase, "a Schrödinger's bang buddy... until that left hand leaves her pocket."
That was truly inspired.
same engine as the 300zx, correct?
the 300zx had a VG30, this Maxima has a VQ30
+tsi92awd corrected seems I have been wrong for years now lol thanks
when I saw 3.0 v6, I instantly thought 300zx especially after he mentioned a twin turbo version BUT then I remembered how different the engine looked in the 300zx, thank for the clarification
The Infiniti J30 was a RWD car with the same engine as the 300ZX. Not many J30s still out there but there are people that talk of doing the swap and putting the TT from the ZX into the J30 for a great sleeper
300zx VG30de has timing belt and cast iron block, Maxima VQ30de has timing chain & aluminum block. Very similar engines though turbo manifolds off the 300zx's VQ30dett will bolt right up to the VQ30/35de engines.
The engine that you pictured in the manual is the VG30e. Which is why it has so little power. The engine that THIS car has is the vq30de which is what makes it so fun to drive. With the vg its just another manual sedan, with the vq is "sporty"
