  • Today's video is a very special one. This production I was only a presenter and consultant for, because it was shot and edited by my former students from the University of Surrey in Guildford.
    We arranged for them to take a first look at the awesome new Nichols N1A - a car conceived by Steve Nichols, designer of the McLaren MP4/4 - the most successful Formula 1 car in history.

      The trend can only continue if people buy cars like this at a lower entry point... younger car guys are all out chasing power and dragee times

    • @simono.sniper3214
      @simono.sniper3214 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dagnut I agree. However, how many of them can drive a manual competently without the driver aids? I remember the days if the family car was an automatic or had disc brakes there would be a badge on it pointing this out!! LOL

    • @dagnut

      @@simono.sniper3214 They are different things and it's hard to be judgemental because I've tuned a lot of cars. There are street cars now out there running 1300hp reliablely on pump fuel..up to 2000 on race fuel..those speeds are hard to comprehend. You couldn't run a car like this without AWD, traction and processors managing the transmission.
      I personally don't see the appeal of this past a few airfield launches , it's beyond dangerous on the street but the engineering still appeals...I guess you could argue this is over powered for the street I don't see how even a very skilled driver could access 625hp per tonne on British roads ..with a clutch and no aids?
      The guys in their late 20s and early 30s with money to spend have probably grown up on torquey diesels rather than n/a so power is the natural progression.

    • @simono.sniper3214
      @simono.sniper3214 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dagnut That is a different subject for sure. I was talking about the total driving experience. IMO, tuned street cars with that much power are a little OTT.

    There’s a bit of a controversy brewing here. There’s an interview with McLaren designer Gordon Murray in the latest issue of Motor Sport mag in which he says, and I quote:- “ I am so sick and tired of all the people living off my reputation. This thing about Steve Nichols being chief designer is the biggest load of rubbish you’ve ever heard. The MP4/4 was not designed by Steve Nichols, I can promise you that. I put him in charge of the monocoque and the front end…. The basic concept of the MP 4/4 was the Brabham BT55 , the 2 cars designs are almost identical.
    Obviously more to this story than meets the eye. Be interesting to hear Steve’s side of things the way he sees it.

    Your students have done a grand job on the editing, as well as yours usual strong presentation of course. This channel is looking more and more like a polished TV programme, just with somewhat refreshingly insightful and honest storytelling. Will continue to enjoy. And as for the N1A...looks and sounds stunning, but surprised more car companies don't do this by taking existing vehicles and adding a more alluring body wrap to give the old school sensations for a fraction of the price of such bespokes. I have owned Nobles and TVRs and will continue to support the more unusual manufacturers - eminently more special vehicles. Please keep us posted on this interesting manufacturer and all future models.
