From McLaren MP4/4 to Nichols N1A - The Can-Am car reborn by a dream team ! [PART 1]

- Many of you will have heard of the McLaren MP4/4, the most successful F1 car of all time. In the hands of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost it won 15 out of 16 races during the 1988 season. You might not of heard of it's designer however ! Steve Nichols has a stella career in motorsport, not only was he chief designer of the MP4/4 but he also played a key role in bringing carbon fibre to F1 and worked closely of Ayrton Senna.
Well now he is part of an unbelievable team, headed by John Minett, that have produced the Nichols N1A. A modern representation of the first McLaren ever, the Elva M1A. In this first of a series of videos I chat to John and Steve about the inspiration behind the car and explore the details that make it so exciting. Stay tuned for more in this series...

Tell you what Peter, I could listen to Steve for hours and hours, I wish I could download his memory!!! What an era to be involved in F1. Steve and his team were pathfinders within F1. The MP4/4 is a work of art. The Nichols N1A looks stunning and what a dream team behind it. I adore the story behind the gear stick. 🎯👌

Isn’t it always the way I find these pioneers from yesteryear are so understated and softly spoken gentlemen and ladies who always play down their achievements…
I knew a chap who was involved in motorcycle sports in the 1950’s who was one for the first people to do The Wall Of Death on motorcycles with no safety equipment or even a helmet!! When I asked him about it all, he just shrugged and said “we were all a lot younger back then…”

Back in 1985 I was sitting in the back of the Lotus Race Transporter chatting to a certain Mr Senna.... In my naivety I asked him about when he braked for the left hander under the bridge on the old Snetterton Circuit, "Just as I turn in" he said..... F.... me!!!! anyone that knows that corner will understand how amazing that is.... Really nice Man.. :-)))

My father worked for an engineering company in Buckinghamshire during the 70/80s and as a young lad spent many a weekends in the pits at Silverstone around the likes of James Hunt etc which had led to me being a lifelong Mclaren fan. Absolute legends being talked to and about here. I remember these eras very well growing up in the 60;s around motorsport in N.Z and following the international scene from then to now. The McLaren /Honda Senna /Prost time was one of my favourites.This is going to be a great series,thanks Pete.

I'm South Australian & a huge fan of Ayrton Senna. ❤️
One race day here it bucketed down with rain, Prost refused to participate, but Ayrton said that fans had paid for tickets & accomodation, & that the event should proceed to respect them & all teams that had worked tirelessly to be there & put on a show.
Ayrton's gear stick lives on, he will be pleased :) Lovely touch that for future drivers. Nice looking car.

Great interview and project which takes me back twenty years…. I also had a great love of the Canam period and wanted a track day car to replace my R500 …..looked very closely at the Gardner Douglas T70 spyder but eventually went for the Ultima Canam fully rose jointed with a 550 Bhp Chevy V8 short block and G50 gearbox…. A very talented friend built it for me…. Unfortunately I was made redundant in the process and so when it was completed we managed one track day at Spa before selling it…. Apparently the flames on the overrun were impressive!
Road prescence was unique….

Looks lovely 😍 My only criticism would be it needs smaller wheels to accommodate a tyre with a fatter sidewall, but I guess they are constrained by the size of the brakes required to provide the necessary stopping power for 650hp/900kg.
Also they wanted a selection of tyres you just dont get with old school profiles
