  • Check out the AF performance between the Lumix S5ii against the Sony A7iv, and Canon R5C. We also got to check out mostly finished picture profiles, LOG profiles, and oversampled resolution tests. Unique Photo in Fairfield, NJ hosted a first look, and we were able to do some interesting tests. Thank you to Unique Photo as well as Panasonic Lumix for letting us play with the new Lumix S5ii.

    Great testing method! Happy to see Panasonic step up but, the S5II can't use PDAF 50/60FPS on FHD, while Sony A7 IV can. Also, the external HDMI plugged in hinders AF as well. Strange. Maybe this points to a lack of processor (L2 engine) power on the S5II? I hope it's just a firmware update away from matching Sony/Canon AF.

    • @PioneerFoto
      @PioneerFoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really good points. Maybe we should do a round 2 and do some hdmi test. I agree, hopefully some firmware updates can fix this. We thought about doing 4k 60 test with AF, but again we don't have an R6ii and it would be unfair to compare it to the R5C as the R5C does 4k 60 full frame.

    • @laliland
      @laliland ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HDMI has no effect on any of the 4K modes. It only disables subject detection in 6K (which the Sony can't do at all), but still uses PDAF. What you wrote about the 1080p/60 mode is true. Personally I don't care. I buy it for the 6K/4K. Didn't shoot a thing in FHD for 4 years now.

    • @karikaru
      @karikaru ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just to point out real quick: the s5ii has PDAF in FHD 50/60 but only in apsc mode.

    • @chriss2295
      @chriss2295 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@laliland HDMI output is around 7 fps while an A7 IV is around 3. Considering that the S5ii is touted as a video centric camera, that delay is less than optimal in a video workflow.

    • @garypranzo9334
      @garypranzo9334 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong about The HDMI. PDAF works fine in HDMI to Ninja V. True anything over 30fps full frame loses PDAF but with APSC crop 60fps PDAF works fine. But I think the takeaway is the S5II is not a slow motion camera. If you need slowmo look elsewhere.

    I'm surprised there is not much talk about lenses.
    S5 ii is a great camera but it's the same price as Sony a7iv now in some locations (Sony is getting cheaper or gets on sale now and then as it's older now). So the Panasonic is losing the price advantage. And Sony has more and cheaper lenses so in the end we end up paying more for Panasonic system. Also there is many more Sony second hand lenses.
    Canon RF lenses are even more expensive so Canon would be the most expansive system when also considering lenses price.
    If Panasonic is a more expensive system than Sony it should be better to justify the extra price.
    Is it? Or is it better to go for A7 iv which is around the same price and will allow you to save money on lenses.
    Additionally, it is possible that Sony will release a good update to a7iv too in the future. Then it will be good to own Sony E mount lenses.

    • @panasonicism
      @panasonicism ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t know where the price of the A7iv is decreasing. Certainly not in my neck of the woods. In Toronto all Sony prices hold firm except for Christmas where Sony my lower the price by $100. Sony G and GM lenses are expensive.
      Panasonic is a clear winner here in terms of price and specs.

    Why to not put AF speed at max setting if you measure AF reactivity ??? I'm sure the S5II will behave better in your test with AF speed at max value (it is shown in this video for example : th-cam.com/video/PpdJCIArUJo/w-d-xo.html). Indeed, by default Panasonic tends to preserve some smoothness in the AF transitions, so the max reactivity is not the goal at default settings.

    First of all, it's PHAF (H=Hybrid), not Pdaf!!
    Stop doing such wrong and boring tests.
    Go outside to the real world and try to focus on tracking a person, which is between many people. Then try to focus on a branch with a lot of light behind the tree. Then try to focus on tracking your dog and you understand that sometimes the focus is on the head, sometimes on the tail of the dog. Yes the PHAF, is an improvement for Panasonic.
    Choosing to use an "old" and slow sensor ESSENTIALLY BRINGS THE AF LEVEL OF THE S5II UP TO THE SAME LEVEL AS THE AF OF THE SONY A7III!!!
    That is, in 2018!!!
    Whatever test you do compares Sony and Canon, the s5ii, WITH THAT PARTICULAR PHAF, IS AT LEAST 1 GENERATION BEHIND...

    • @PioneerFoto
      @PioneerFoto  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow....we sense some hostility. Full disclosure- Lumix was a guest of Unique Photo, and we were guests of both. The camera is a preproduction model. They wouldn't let us take the camera outside to "focus on branches" or "trees with the sun behind it" or into public places where there are groups of people and possible "dogs". We did the best we could with a camera that is not ours, as guests in a commercial business. But thank you for the watch.

As mentioned in the video, we don’t have an R6ii which is really in the same arena as the S5ii and A7iv. The R5C’s auto focus for ppl will perform the same as the R6ii. In that way, the comparison for auto focus is fair across the board.
