Ive owned both and I prefer the S5II. It's quite superior in both video (can shoot 6K open gate) and stabilization is much better than Sony. Thank you for this in-depth comparison. I have always been a fan of Panasonic but currently shoot with an A7III. This video will help me to decide on a future upgrade.
Hello Mathieu, excellent and informative video as usual, thank you. Any comment on how the S5II does with the latest 2.3 firmware in regards to autofocus? Any significant improvements?
Great job! I think since the Panasonic is the newest one on the market, that Panasonic has the opportunity to address issues that can be addressed in software via firmware updates. Make the auto focus on par with the SONY 100%, fix that LCD zoom-in feature and sharpen it up a bit...... and more things as they get customer feedback. At the same time SONY has the opportunity to improve their IBIS and who knows what else with an "A7V" which is probably due before to long.
I've previously owned sigma lenses and sold all of it because the auto focus is slower versus the company's own lenses. It may have affected the actual performance of both cameras on auto focus tracking and image rendering.
Eye AF test done with Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 and Lumix S 70-200mm F2.8. Concerts shots taken with a variety of Sigma, Panasonic and Sony lenses. All this is stated in the titles and exif data in the video... Wildlife shots taken with the only lens that was long enough and available at the time for the S5 II.
Was thinking about getting the A7 IV + the Sony 200-600mm zoom lens to replace my Fuji X-H2, but the burst speed just isn't really up to today's standards, especially when shooting action. Ended up buying a Z8 and pre-ordering the Nikkor 180-600 instead, which I hope you'll be testing at some point.. 😁 A couple of weeks ago, the A7 IV was reduced to 1800€ here in Germany, pretty much a no-brainer for anyone shopping at that price-point.
Wow that's a nice prise of Sony A7IV Is that only in Germany? I love the new lens 180-600mm of nikon but the cameras are still expensive for me. Wish they had a better auto focus camera at the price of canon R7 or R8. I would buy it immediately.
Enjoyed your detailed analysis of both cameras, and relaxing way you deliverer the information. Both these two are in my bucket list, you have a new subscriber 🥳🥳
For me there is no such thing as the perfect lens or camera or anything else. In the day when you could work on cars I did basic maintenance and I could not do so with a half inch socket or open end wrench. I was at a wedding that took place in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, I brought a Fujifilm XT5 with a few primes, a 13& 75mm Viltrox, a 23 & 16mm Fujifilm and 33mm Tokina, all fit in a Think Tank vision 13 bag. It may seem like a lot to pack, but many of the lens are not that large and this was my first time in the Finger Lakes so I wanted to photograph a wide variety of subjects. I found myself using the Viltrox 13 & 75mm lens the most.
I bought the S5IIX because it’s more video focused and I like Panasonic’s color science much better…..it was a simple choice for me! Thanks for the great review comparison !
At last! I was missing your comparisons so much! I wanted to buy one of these two cameras and without your analysis I felt that the expert opinion was missing 👏
You are a born teacher sir. An intelligent content creator. Never believed I could watch from beginning to the end. I celebrate your well detailed review. Shalom
About catalyst browse, it doesn't reduce sharpness, but all of the softness comes from motion blur, because you have to turn all stabilization off. So it is similar to programs like gyroflow, where you need to stabilize the camera on a gimbal or a rig to avoid jitters before applying the digital stabilization.
I tried now with the shot I used for my sharpness test. Same result: with Catalyst, the footage is soft compared to the original. I've prioritised image quality, tried different crop amount, tried different codecs for the output, same thing. Catalyst Browse doesn't offer a lot of settings to play with, but when I tested the trial of Catalyst Prepare a while back, I got the same result once again. To be honest, the only reason I included Catalyst in my video here is to show that what you can get with Sony in post, you get it with Panasonic in camera (they're not exactly the same, but they are close). I actually find Catalyst really good and better than most digital stabilisation on editing softwares, it's just a shame to loose details like that. Not sure what's going on. I even tried different shutter speeds in a previous test.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons That's a bummer. But also, catalyst is not great at low light where you can't crank the shutter speed, without getting a ton of noise. A good traditional stabilization system will run laps around it in low light. Sony being the biggest camera company, somehow have the worst stabilization, both in body and lens.
They can both do well for travel, but you'll have more choice of lenses with the A7 IV, and Sony's Eye AF is faster and more reliable for family pictures.
Which one is better suited for wildlife? Im between s5ii with sigma 60-600 and a7iv and sony 200-600 for an upcoming safari in south africa, I will take my Om1 paired with a 40-150 f2.8 as second body and a panasonic gx9 with a olympus 12-40 f2.8 as a third camera for wider shots
Thank you. Yes I thought about the S5 a few times while preparing the video, and I agree it would have been nice to give more feedback about the original model. I saw it discounted to £1200 on Amazon's prime deals the other day, that's a fantastic price for a camera of this calibre, if AF is not a main priority.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons indeed, according to the (rather rare and less thorough) comparisons S5 vs S5m2 I watched on YT, the original S5 performs slightly better in every discipline (especially in low light) but the AF… The question is whether a switch from the S5 to the S5 m2 should be considered as an upgrade or downgrade, actually…
For video autofocus, how big would you say the difference is between the Panasonic S5ii and Sony in real-world scenarios? I film weddings and occasionally nature/sports with a lot of unpredictable movement, so I need reliable AF. Which video AF system would you say is overall better and for what reason? For context, I'm deciding between the S5ii and the Sony A7siii. I like the S5ii more as an overall camera, but curious if the AF difference is big enough to sway me to Sony.
I never tested the A7Siii unfortunately, so can’t comment directly on that one, but I would expect it to perform on the same level as other Sony models such as the A7iv. In general, I find the S5ii to do well if you stick with the single AF point. For video specifically, face/eye detection works fine, at least with a person walking, or simply filming yourself in front of the camera. I can’t confirm how good it could be in a more busy environment such as in a wedding venue. The face/eye detection could be more erratic. Overall, the main difference is that Sony has better Eye AF and Tracking, whereas with the Lumix there are many moments where you need to disable subject detection, and just work with a single point that you move manually. The tracking mode on the Panasonic is also unreliable, wether it’s photo or video.
Excellent comparison! Did you notice moire patterns on the s5ii due to the lack of AA filter to the sensor? And if so is it going to be a problem on professional work?
Very good comparison. I like the way the Panasonic can zoom in for focusing in a small overlay window instead of full screen. I use manual focus lenses so focus aids are important. However, if that zoom is not sharp it's a big minus point. Even on the 12 megapixel A7sii that zooming is sharp. The Panasonic S1 has a very high quality EVF and since I only use manual focus lenses that could be helpful but if the zoom is fuzzy it defeats this benefit.
Yes, I like that overlay window as well, it's a shame the magnification is not as useful as it could be. I remember older Sony cameras like the A7 III having the same problem in video mode.
I suspect the Sony A7iv to use contrast to fine tune focusing. That is because when shooting runners , the global hit rate is very low, but it's about zero when it comes to blondes with blond eyebrows and light eyes. Even though the face is detected with the green box in the EVF , actual focus is off. It works much better with very light skin with dark eyebrows , thin-rimmed glasses , wrinkled faces .
I use the A7 IV with FE 20mm F1.8 in APS-C mode. The reason behind this particular setup is that I use a small Teleprompter (the Parrot) which mounts on the lens directly, but doesn't work well with my 24-70mm F2.8 unless I zoom in past 35mm (but the frame becomes too narrow). The 20mm gives me the perfect field of view in APS-C mode and works well with the Teleprompter. Previously I also used the FE 35mm F1.8, then the FE 35mm 1.4 GM, but I prefer a wider view than 35mm, and the G Master lens is not great with AF for video (lots of breathing back and forth).
Hello, I am considering purchasing the S5 II, but after seeing several testers of this device, I have some doubts. Can you tell me in the 30 fps burst mode, when you press the shutter button there is always this moment of slowdown when the burst starts? Still in burst mode, to overcome this problem is there a pre-trigger mode (like on the G9 II) *** Bonjour, j'envisage l'achat du S5 II, mais à force de voir plusieurs testeurs de cet appareil, j'ai quelques doutes.
When all is considered the Panasonic S5ii is superior. Not in everyway, but overall it wins. The price is the bit that seals the deal. I got mine of Amazon for £1700 with the 20-60 kit lens and a spare battery. How can the Sony match that. It can't.
Specs are important but result and enjoying using a camera are more important in my opinion. A fiend gave me his a7iv for one week and even if it is a beast of camera -(af is amazing) I can t enjoy it. Display is not so good, ergonimic neighter and there a few things that are not so logic
You are one of the best on camera reviews. Very professional and a lot of work. Now is the time for Sony a6700 😊. Probably with canon R7.. I personally want to buy a new set for wildlife. I love canon cameras but don't really find a lens to match. Especially with the prices of the lenses of Sony (200-600mm at f6.3) and now Nikon (180-600mm at f6.3 which I wish they make a budget camera with better auto focus to match it.) Keep the good work, love the birds in flight test of course 😊😊.
IMO, these cameras cannot be properly compared. The Panasonic is a video first oriented camera, the A7iv is more photo oriented. I've owned both, and while the A7iv is good, as a video shooter, I far prefer the Lumix. Video only the Panasonic looks more cinematic, and image quality is more filmic, while on the Sony video looks more like video--over-sharpened. The filmic look is prized in mirrorless cameras because of the softness of film image. Plus, the Sony colors remain problematic, being unnatural and even strange. I prefer the more naturalistic colors from Panasonic. Plus, I also find Panasonic V-log to be one of the best and easiest to grade logs ever. By comparison, the Sony looks to me like a one-trick-pony, with its great AF. But what good is it when the stabilization looks so bad?!? Finally, the video exposure assist features and waveform should not be ignored. These are great features for video shooting. C4k is also wonderful for cinematic shooting.
perhaps I won't get a reply... I want to have an S5 II for the rest of my days ... I'm 55 and not that wealthy... I'm strictly amateur ..not even posting in social media...it's for me ..for my soul...I now own a nikon D5500 APS-C with a Tamron 16-300 and a Nikkor 35 1.8.. I will have to sell it in very low price to get Panasonic .... It will be the craziness of my life... But I'm worried of being darker than other cameras.... not to mention not supporting HEIF ... yes I know the cropped 4K/60 video... not sure... but the 1700€ price with a Sigma 28-70 f2.8 at 845€ is a compelling and unbeatable combo!!! But is it ? Today? And tomorrow ? Tomorrow the prices for an entry level camera will be higher.. Nikon Z6III ... with such a price is untouchable... Not sure what to do... if you could help me a bit ... please....
There is always the chance of a new camera tomorrow, but that is not something you can predict. So I would concentrate on the present. If you think the S5 II and Sigma lens are a good solution for you, then go for it. There is also the possibility that the S5 II will be discounted during black friday, Panasonic usually has good deals during that time, so you could try and wait a bit more and see if you can get an even better price.
never use ! the catalyst brows, It ruins your footage! and frocve them in to 8 bit, with teh banding issues that comes ! C. Brows is a useless toolk it also softens your footages conciderably !

If you itest this on filmeing som hig light skies, and compare, you will se that you get 8 bit banding, after Calayst. STop !! useing this softeware, its a footage killer .
that's what i knew also. i mean the fact that you get 8bit with catalyst (from the original 10bit), so i guess its not ok if you grade it afterwards. also, the shutterspeed limitation is not ok.. u barely ever can film 50 shutterspeed, from what i understand it's generally advised to be at at least 200-250.. a no-no for "cinematic".
20:25 jeez wasn't expecting Sony to look that bad on skintones, looks greenish/yellowish. Panasonic altough has more magenta, to me it looks more natural, i understand this is video and maybe by shootiing log you can make the sony look better. I'm mainly a photographer and from time to time do use video as well, i have an a7iii and was thinking to upgrade to a7iv or a7rv, but by the looks of it, a7iv still doesn't look amazing, so i wonder how a7rv looks with it's AI chip and claimimg better colours with it's improved AWB algorithm.
The skin tone test are SOOC JPGs, but the color palette is the same for video, although as you said you can record with S-Log, Cinetone is also interesting. The test was taken with manual white balance.
I'm glad there still are people in the English segment of TH-cam who produce well balanced detailed reviews.

Really looking forward to your impressions of the A6700. Particularly for us birders.
Thanks. The A6700 is on my to-review list :-)
Thank you.@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
which produces the best video quality?
Great review. I am thinking about buying new camera. This video review helps with decision. Thank you.
Excellent. Clear. Thorough. Thank you.
Cheers!
Hello, I am considering purchasing the S5 II, but after seeing several testers of this device, I have some doubts.
Can you tell me in the 30 fps burst mode, when you press the shutter button there is always this moment of slowdown when the burst starts?
Still in burst mode, to overcome this problem is there a pre-trigger mode (like on the G9 II)

Thanks for the interesting comparrison
Stellar video, thank you!
Excellent comparatif merci Mathieu !
Very good and fair material!
Thanks!
Thanks for the comparison 👌
My pleasure!
both really great for video, for video s5 has better value. But sony is better for photography.
When all is considered the Panasonic S5ii is superior. Not in everyway, but overall it wins. The price is the bit that seals the deal. I got mine of Amazon for £1700 with the 20-60 kit lens and a spare battery. How can the Sony match that. It can't.
Great review
Outstanding review…. No other words.
Gracias yo quiero las dos!!!😅
Specs are important but result and enjoying using a camera are more important in my opinion.
A fiend gave me his a7iv for one week and even if it is a beast of camera -(af is amazing) I can t enjoy it.
Display is not so good, ergonimic neighter and there a few things that are not so logic
I had both, the Sony is really better for BIF and tracking, the Pana has much better IBIS and Open Gate.
Can you explain this in normal languages?
@@Knoblauchkueche BIF bird in flight, tracking object, IBIS in body image stabilization and Open Gate full sensor capture in video.
The difference is that one ecosystem is vastly superior to the other!
Best review !
I hope Panasonic will correct the magenta skin in photos. It's a real problem
They just release a new update is it still like that?
You are one of the best on camera reviews. Very professional and a lot of work. Now is the time for Sony a6700 😊. Probably with canon R7.. I personally want to buy a new set for wildlife. I love canon cameras but don't really find a lens to match. Especially with the prices of the lenses of Sony (200-600mm at f6.3) and now Nikon (180-600mm at f6.3 which I wish they make a budget camera with better auto focus to match it.) Keep the good work, love the birds in flight test of course 😊😊.
Thank you! Yes A6700 vs R7 is a good one, will see when the Sony becomes available to rent. 😉

Best comparsiom i see
thank you

@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons I appreciate your reply. Thank you...!
I NEED HELP, SONY O LUMIX, PLEASE, I'M DRIVING ME CRAZY
It also depends what you want to do with the camera, if you're more into video, or wildlife, or sports etc...
Yeah they even better than canon and terrible sony
Gosh, Sony footage is so green
never use ! the catalyst brows, It ruins your footage! and frocve them in to 8 bit, with teh banding issues that comes ! C. Brows is a useless toolk it also softens your footages conciderably !
I can export in 10-bit on mine. To me the most annoying thing is the loss of sharpness.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons If you hear what
Jacques Crafford, clever guy, says about this. He claims its a only a "wrapper", and I can also say I have seen dthis. I actually made movie( land for sale) I ruined some shots after getting to know all about this. I started a case against SONY fro it too ! The wrapper file will show 190 bit, but its not !
First!
Bravo! 😎
Sony >>>>> Panasonic
Great review
Cheers!
