    When that vignette adjustment layer kicks in at around the 0:01 mark 🙃
    Really tried to be thorough with this cleaning guide. The PCDC videos are mostly time-lapses of the cleaning processes. I'll try to make one of these for each major PC component, though you'll find that it becomes fairly redundant after a while. IPA is great for PCBs and most plastics. Soap/water is good for radiators, fin stacks, and cases.

    Soft bristle toothbrush with anti-static brushes are wonderful to have for electrical component cleaning. Works so well to break up dust build up in places Cotton Swabs can't. Also, be mindful, Shop Towels, Paper Towels, and TP may leave behind lint from breakdown of usage, I prefer cheap microfiber towels/rags for certain cleanings. 99.9% is lovely to use, you can use 91% if you let it sit and dry for 10ish minutes before re-equipping the motherboard and installing the motherboard. Also, if you have a fan blowing around you in the room (Ceiling, floor based, table based) clean it first! Great video.

    Great content! Would it be possible to make a video about thermal pads? Like a buying guide for example. And compare the cheap stuff to the known brands. I've been refurbishing some graphics cards and many thermal pads get damaged and need to be replaced. But I'm having trouble finding decent cost effective ones here in Canada... Thanks a lot again for the content!

      I just used a detailing brush on all parts of my mobo and dusted it. I did it without an anti static band. I was getting a boot LED post light after. Kept booting into the BIOS and BSoD if I tried to enter Windows 10. I am not 100% sure what the actual problem was because I finally did a a random action, which was do a system restore and it fixed it. I am not sure if it was static and "released" because resetting the CMOS didn't fix it, but it works now

    Greg brake cleaner evaporates like alcohol, but is pretty harsh stuff. I think the safer option we see regularly is actually a multi-purpose lubricant spray, like WD-40. It's non-conductive, as many oils are, so much safer to use on electronics. But a lot messier, definitely prefer alcohol.

    • @LeoInterVir
      @LeoInterVir 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've noticed that WD40 makes things for electric work. I wonder how that would be to clean computers.

    • @kirikayuumura3256
      @kirikayuumura3256 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      To add, most Brake Clean formulas will also dissolve/blister/melt some plastics/polymers and paints/coatings, so it is possible to severely damage computer parts. WD-40 is an option for really nasty/caked up grime, but it will leave the oil residue that will in turn attract more grime, so you have to follow up with alcohol.
      The best option would be to use CRC brand '05103 QD Electronic Cleaner', which you can generally pick up at a local chain auto-parts store or Walmart (Just search CRC QD Electronic Cleaner). It's a petroleum and alcohol based cleaner, so it not only washes out grime, it also cleans contact surfaces and coats surfaces to further help prevent grime/corrosion build up. Comes in a pressurized can, like Brake Clean or a Canned Air Duster, with a nozzle/tube. Lastly, it is also non-conductive.

    What a great video - thanks Greg. I have a couple of motherboards that I'll now be attending to :-) It would be great to see a short video about how to replace thermal pads rather than reuse the old ones. • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Mike. Thanks for watching. And part of the reason why I don't bother replacing old thermal pads (unless they're crusty/disintegrating) is because the thickness requirements are so ambiguous.

    Its important to clean your pc from time to time. Depending on your location, sometimes dust and humidity come together, and believe me, you don’t want dust to stick into your components. Thats when sulfate comes into place and those are major problems.

    • @RussellTeapot
      @RussellTeapot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean by "sulfate"? I know that's a sulphur/oxygen anion (SO4--), but what it has to do with the combination of moisture and dust?

      @diegomorales4028 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@RussellTeapot man, sorry for my bad English. I meant corrosion, when copper turns greenish. At least here in Perú we battle a lot with humidity and dust which some times forms “crusts” inside the electronics and starts corroding the copper lanes.

    • @RussellTeapot

      @@diegomorales4028 ahhh ahaha ok, don't worry, I'm Italian, and sometimes the brain goes wherever it wants with foreign languages. Now it makes perfect sense: I suppose the dust acts like a sort of "sponge" trapping humidity, hence the corrosion. Fortunately where I am (South Italy) we don't have that much humidity, but I've seen pretty bad copper corrosion aswell

      Touch something metal, like your PC case with PSU plugged into a grounded wall socket, with the PSU in the off mode. Don't wear woolen clothes or cause too much friction before cleaning electronics. Or get an expensive anti-static bracelet that doesn't really help that much. If static electricity kills components, it's not the static electricity you are carrying, but the tools and interaction between them and the electronics.

I am millwright and when we use alcohol to clean up selector or push button they literally dry twist and crack in second after spraying alcohol on it. And when you push air onto the mobo is there any risk of pushing dust deep into the contact of the Pci-E or un-used ram slot?

    Do not use brake cleaner on PC parts. Some brake cleaners don't do well with plastic and rubber. IPA isn't that expensive anyways. Keep the brake clean for what it's meant for.

    Pardon the stupid question but it's difficult finding 99.9% isopropyl alcohol, I live in a third world country. Would isopropyl alcohol of a lower concentration than 99% also work?

    Can I use lower concentration alcohol? maybe 96% or even 90%? considering the water concentration might be higher, assuming water constitutes the rest of the solution

    You should not be applying downward pressure to a CPU when it is out of it's socket or you risk bending pins. Clean the top when it is still in the socket.

    I run a small computer business and recently, my friends PSU went tits up and fried out his MSI GTX 970, the PSU and GPU were dead, everything else was fine. In the midst of using my shopvac to blow out the computer, there was so many dust bunnies caked up inside the power supply and case and I can see that the dust could have easily caused the short and fried things. He did say that there were sparks down in the power supply and quickly shut off. I did a thorough detail on everything before diagnosing. But yeah, the PSU tested didn't get anything out of the PSU. When no post with the GPU, I pulled it and onboard video worked fine. Tried the card in different slots, still nothing. Popped my RX 480 in, worked fine.
    He's currently borrowing the RX 480 until he can get a new GPU, but he had me install all of his stuff in a new case with a new PSU, works great right now!

      @tili_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      this amount of detail is too much for someone with actual OCD. just use compressed air to dust it off and be done with it (if you don't smoke or vape next to your PC)

      @@tili_ honestly, my system doesn't get too bad. I've got a decent positive pressure setup with mesh in all the main intake areas (case is a Lancool 2) and can actually get away with a good once-over every 3 weeks or so

    Just a can of wd-40 ‘contact cleaner’ and you are done in 1minute. It refreshes all the board from dirt. Alcohol pretty good to clean old thermal paste.

    Isopropyl is like GPUs it's nonexistent and can't ship to certain places. I was lucky to find 2 bottles in 5 months of searching.
    When someone asks for a deep clean on there PC I have to add using isopropyl as a extra charge since is so hard to come by.
