You may not have a son to teach your values, but you have the ability to teach your daughters how a man with your values behaves, both in life and toward women, and teach them that they should accept nothing less. That’s just as important. ❤❤

I was raised by my Father who didn't have a clue what to do with a daughter, so he taught me everything he would teach a son. Part of that was to always stand up for myself. Violence is never right, but sometimes there are no options left. If something has to be done, don't b1tch and moan about it, just get your head down and get it done.
Most importantly he taught me to be strong and respect myself.
So I agree, there are a lot of value in what a good Father can teach, and show by example to their daughters.
He also taught me DIY, brick work and basic plumbing, but that's a different story.

He said I failed to protect you. She then asked him, "Who's protecting me now?" This changed his life! He stopped doing drugs, drinking and being a part of a gang! He is home now!

Not gonna lie about it, nor sugar coat it: This was my childhood. The song, I mean. I was bullied and beaten on a near-daily basis as a child. Finally, it got to the point in my mid-teens.... when I just "exploded" and beat a bully stupid.
Remember something: Just because someone doesn't WANT to fight, doesn't mean they CAN'T or WON'T. If you push someone far enough that they "Snap", you're in for a real bad time.

@@MrBoyneboy There's a saying that goes something like, "Beware the rage of a quiet man." It's the men who don't do anything and take the abuse over time where the anger builds until it just explodes. A good friend of mine was like that until he finally beat a school bully unconscious and just walked away. That's not in his character at all, but everyone has their breaking point. I've always said that a bully only understands his own language, and that's a punch in the mouth. We don't do bullies any favors by taking their abuse. They need taught life lessons, too.

Teach your daughter’s to defend themselves, and always back them up. Girls get bullied by other girls and they can be viscous. You have to have principles and the one my dad taught me was that anyone who would stand by and watch another person being violated was the worse kind of coward. I watched him on several occasions come to the aid of a person who was being either verbally or physically tortured . He wasn’t extreme in his actions but he stopped the situations. He didn’t do it for fame or show, he did it as a human being and quietly walked away. He once put his boot in the backside of a man who was kicking and stomping on a dog who just wandered into his yard. Those were the times I was most proud to be his daughter. RIP Daddy.

You interpreted the song exactly as Kenny wanted you to, and that's the reason Kenny Rogers is so beloved by so many people - his true gift as a storyteller. The parts in this song that really resonate with me, is when he goes down an octave during the serious parts in the track "and there was 3 of them" and "you could hear a pin drop when Tommy turned and locked the door". This is the brilliance in the song and how he sings it, he takes the emotion and drags it out of you as a listener. I actually welled up a bit watching your reaction to what happened to Becky and talking about relating that fear for you and protecting your family. This is what great music does, it makes you feel something. You really should review "Lady" by Kenny as well, it would be a beautiful tribute to your wife. You will know what I mean once you've heard it...

Starting around age twelve, every year have a talk with your daughters about good and bad qualities (in men). Each year have them right down what they’re looking for and not looking for in a man. Refreshing that line of thought regularly will keep them focused in the right direction and decrease the likelihood that they will get involved with the wrong type of person. Also tell them if they want to get a good man, they need to be the kind of woman a good man will want.

That's always why I comment to you when you become emotional, My Daddy told me when I was young that only real Men cry. My Daddy was a big tough man,he was a welder and a pipefitter. He would always walk away if he could. One time though, we were swimming at a local rock quarry. I was 12 and had 4 girlfriends the same age and my Mom and Daddy were there. A group of probably 12 older teenaged boys who were cussing like sailors, throwing sand, and just generally ruining our day were there .Daddy said Young Men? Please see that my Wife, my daughter and her young lady friends are within hearing distance of your foul mouths, and I would appreciate it if you would stop or move to the other side of the beach. Thank you. This kid probably 17 years old,and was definitely a quarterback or a wrestler and this was in 1978. This guy was solid muscle. My Daddy was in his 50s. This guy said EFF you old dude and laughed. I had never seen my Dad mad. The veins bulged in his neck and his forehead. My Daddy took two long strides, grabbed dude by his throat and held him up in the air. His " friends" ran. My Daddy said I'm going to put you down, you're going to apologize to my Wife, my Daughter and her friends, and you're going to MEAN it, and follow your intelligent friends, or I'll just hold you up until you lose consciousness and your "friends" can call an ambulance. He put the guy down, the guy burst into tears, apologized profusely,he said his Mother would kill him if she knew that he had even talked like that, especially in front of ladies. My Daddy said Good Man, stuck out his hand, they shook hands and the group moved to the other side of the quarry. I'll never forget that. What you just said about your Wife and your Daughters made me remember that. Thank you. You know if my Daddy had been alone, he wouldn't have said a word.

Based on what I've seen, most mothers have a very strong protective instinct and it doesn't go away when the children are adult men and women, either. And I don't know if it's universal (no one can know that), but most women would do everything they possibly could to protect their husband or wife as well. I don't think men and women are all that different when it comes to protecting their families.

Back in 2011, my wife and I adopted our two grandchildren at the ages of 1 year old and 10 months old.
    Now, she’s 16 and he’s 15.
🎉heoughout the years I would pray to God to help me to be the best father I could be. Now she’s graduating Highschool a year early and my grandson is making A’s and B’s in school.
Some time ago I didn’t know if I could do it and then realized they were gifts.
I lost my sister at the age of 8 and then my son(from a previous marriage.
I as thought about them as I often do, one night I realized why God gave me those gifts.
If I learned anything from my lifetime of experiences, don’t worry; God has a plan and He’s there to help you.
I didn’t treat them differently being a girl or boy but gave them all the love, teachings, and God’s wisdom He had given me.
You’ll be fine, don’t worry, God’s with you and soon and the time comes sooner than later, you’ll have a grown woman standing with you on that dance floor and just be goobsmacked when she looks into your eyes and says “I love you daddy!” It’s then when you know, you must of did things right.

Growing up I listened to these songs, it's unbelievable now when I hear the lyrics how really mature the lyrics actually were without saying graphic things. I knew as a child, what happened to Becky, and also that Tommy went in and killed all of those men. I have never condoned violence but grew up knowing that Tommy did what he had to. It occurs to me as an adult, that maybe, growing up understanding these life lessons, that we shield our children from, gave me many of my core values and maybe some of these songs would be beneficial to the new generation. Thank you for exposing people to these songs. The contrast between Coward of the county and Bridge over troubled water is huge, but both are strong life lessons on how to be the type of person you should be.
