This is a cover. I absolutely LOOOOOVE Brooks and Dunn, but B W Stevenson was the original singer and his version is GREAT also!!!!!!
When Brooks & Dunn came out with their version, it had been about a decade since the original, and I kept thinking, "I know I've heard this song before, but when & by whom?" The original wasn't played much by then & I was little when it came out in early 70s, but that tune was still very familiar. I just recently learned that B. W. Stephenson also wrote "Shambala," which was later made a hit by Three Dog Night. I also just learned Stephenson was a Texan like myself. Small world. Both versions are wonderful.
Like you, I loved this song in the 70s, and I was so happy when one of my favorite duos recorded it.
@rebeccacurtis6680 haha try closer to 25 years after. The original was 1973, Brooks & Dunn was 1997. It is a great song, and I love both versions.
BW "buckwheat" Stevenson played alot in Austin in the early 70's
They definitely did Stevenson's memory justice with this version.
Greatest thing about this song is when you are driving and nobody is in your car so you can try to hit that high note without embarrassing yourself!!!

Brooks and Dunn dominated the country music scene for more than 20 years. They won 2 Grammys, Nineteen CMA awards and THIRTY ACM awards!!! They are still touring and are playing near me this summer.
I'm 61 and this song STILL gives me chills. Ronnie Dunn even sounded like this in live performances. They were the verified Dynamic Duo, just sayin.

This one was written and recorded in 1973 by B.W. Stevenson, a Dallas native. Stevenson had his career tragically cut short, dying from an infection after a heart valve surgery at age 38.
Ronnie Dunn sounds like him when he sings the song.

I don't think Brooks and Dunn made a bad song. You can just pull them up and start reacting and ever song will impress. They have serious love songs, working man songs, playful songs, life songs. Ronnie Dunn is one of the best vocalist ever
That being said, Kix Brooks can sing as well. Doesn't matter which one is at the mic, the song is still going to be the sort that aspiring country singers can only dream about. (And I'm not that big of a country fan.)

Back in the day, they won Duo of the year multiple years in a row. They were untouchable.
It always comes back to Kix Brooks...the showman...Ronnie Dunn the vocalist!!!
That being said, make NO mistake, Kix Brooks can also sing. I'll keep the personal story to myself, but if you go to a concert, you'll hear them both. I'd love to see a reaction or two to some of the songs with Kix on the lead vocals.

Tim ~Foust~. It can be found on Austin Brown's channel. It's not a capella, but it's a fun version to check out, especially since Tim is a natural super bass and is singing high tenor while Austin, a high tenor, is singing the low tenor.

This was absolutely one of the most melodic songs I have ever heard. You were a blast to watch, so fun!!!!!!!!!!!! Ronnie Dunn's voice is amazing!!!!!! It was nothing bad as to why they split. They were just tired after so many years and both wanted to do some solo work. They did get back together at the urging of the record label and so they were back on. So nothing bad happened!!!!!!

Love this version, B.W. Stevensong was the original artist way back in '73 but Brooks and Dunn took it to another level. There's also another great cover by a couple of the fellas from Home Free (you reacted to their hit "Man of Constant Sorrow), singing in their back yard.

My band played this song almost every gig we did and I always felt bad for our keyboard player who had to sing it. Dont get me wrong, he Killed it but its So vocally challenging. And the back up vocals aint no joke either 😂. Anything we'd play from Brooks and Dunn would Always Kill!!! Great band!!
They were just here in VA Beach. They amazed me because Ronnie wasn’t well and Kix did most of the singing. Such a great duo to be able to do that.

Unfortunately, "El Paso" is one heck of a depressing song. Marty Robbins does a fabulous job - you "feel" the lyrics. But man, oh man, there are no "My Maria" happy-dance vibes with that song...Whoa...

Definitely one of my favorite country artists. I own every album and have seen them multiple times, a couple of times with Reba. They have some great duets.

Best concert i ever went to was brooks and dunn..When I was 12 I was into green day,(and beastie boys) the album "dookie" just came out and I had no patience for country music, but we were at the state fair and my mom and sister wanted to go.. hands down the most fun concert I've been to

I always listened to rock in the eighties, when my sister and I got horses our friends from the horse biarding place always tried to get us to go to "RowdyvCowboy Night" in the early nineties and finally we went. Well, after that we went almostvevery week aftwr that for a few years. Back then, a lot of the country had kind of a rock beat to it, which I prefer to this day!
