I listened to this for the first time when you did the poll, and have listened to the song at least once a day ever since. The Gambler was cool, but I was a bit disappointed we didn’t get Coward - so excited to see you’ve done it here. Seeing the looks on your faces as the story unfolded was priceless. Damn, that was great - _fantastic_ reaction.

    Kenny Rogers - Grey Beard
Artists such as Kenny Roger, Gorden Lightfoot, Jim Croche, Niel Diamond, and Marty Robbins, etc, were integral to my childhood. I hold them in the same regard as Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Ozzy, The Ramones, Motörhead, etc. I wore out my Kenny Rogers Greatest Hits tape years ago.
If you enjoy the ballads such as Coward of the County, check out Marty Robbins, he is the king of ballads in my opinion. Many younger folks know "Big Iron" from Fallout: New Vegas, but he has loads of amazing songs.

I just happened across your channel by accident, and I LOVE you guys! I'm a retired English teacher, and would have loved to have both of you in any of my classes. I don't like all the music you review, but it's great that you look at lyrics of such a wide variety of genres and analyze them; so awesome. I watched your Pink Floyd choice, and it got me thinking about "On the Turning Away," and then thought of the theme. George Michael's "Praying for Time" and Bruce Hornsby and the Range's "The Way it Is" are all similar, and so appropriate to what's going on this country right now.. You might also look at some of the anti-war music of the late 60s/early 70s. "The Vietnam Song" (Joe and the Fish); "For What It's Worth" (Buffalo Springfield); "Fortunate Son" (Creedence Clearwater Revival, aka CCR); "What's Going On" (Marvin Gaye); "I'd Love to Change the World" (Ten Years After); "Eve of Destruction" (Barry McGuire); or anything by Bob Dylan from that period. Just some thoughts... :)

The way I heard it Kenny contacted lionel, asked if he was interested in helping him write a song. At first lionel was hesitant. But, he told him he had an idea for one that the Commodores weren't into. Kenny wrote the first verse, lionel wrote the second -in the bathroom. Then they collaborated on the rest.

And his promise to his father was all that was protecting the other people trying to push him around. It’s like maybe Tommy wasn’t afraid of other people. He was afraid of what he might do them. Maybe Tommy’s father also sensed that (just like his brother, Tommy’s uncle).
