I am 100% the same way. You might get a pass me if you're throwing jabs at me. But attack someone who can't defend themselves ESPECIALLY if it's someone I love, you've just signed up for a world of hurt!

I love this song because both messages are true. Getting into needless fights and acting a fool won't prove you're a man, it only makes you a joke. But there are times, when man or woman, you have to stand up and get serious and fight with all you have. One of the greatest challenges in life is knowing when to pick your battles.

Every man has his limits. And every man I know, even the seemingly meek ones, would have done what Tommy did. Never mess with a man's family if you value life.
In life, you have to be smart and walk away from doing a stupid thing, but that being said, you have to also stand up to those who want to be stupid and push you to the limits. Then they realize they made a grave mistake...
The most dangerous guy was usually the quiet perceptive one. If you have ever pissed him off he has probably thought of 10 ways to kill you. 3 of which involve very gruesome deaths.

This song epitomizes the saying "Even demons run when a good man goes to war." When the Gatlin Boys messed with Becky that's when it became the "It was at this moment that they knew they fucked up" and Tommy became vengeance personified.

It's more scary to be confronted by somebody who doesn't stand up for themselves , but stands up for others.
This came out when I was a kid. I remember thinking it was a serious, heavy subject but I’ve also always remembered the lesson. It applies to lots of things in life. ❤️

I actually had the pleasure of meeting Kenny Rogers and his wife before his passing. My younger sister was a very big Kenny Rogers fan and was so mad at me because I didn’t get an autograph for her. Well, I told her I’d invited him into the doctors office I worked for at the time so that the people in the mall would leave them alone. I didn’t do it to get his autograph because I knew he was being hounded by his fans and I wanted to give him and his wife some breathing room and they were the sweetest people you ever want to meet very polite, very engaging and very thankful for that small kindness. This is one of my favorite Kenny Rogers songs coward of the county when I was young and this time came out I was raising the family of 10 siblings, so there was always a fight somewhere, but when I took away from it was how to raise my kids you don’t pick on people I don’t care if they’re smaller, handicap older you show respect to everyone and if you do have to get into a squabble, I’ve always told my boys the other person had better throw the first punch or else. Now my brother who I used to fight with quite often. I love and adore him now Used to call me Sergeant mom, because he was said I was so strict with my three boys when our kids graduated high school my brother told me that he apologized for calling me Sergeant mom and I ask him what he was apologizing for and he told me he was saying it because he thought I was too mean or strict with my boys but when they graduated out of all 10 kids, he said my boys were the best behaved kids in the entire family so he felt he had to apologize. Now my sons are raising their kids and they’re following that example and my grandkids are very polite. Very helpful. If someone needs it I’ve seen my grandson several times jump in to help someone with their groceries at the grocery store. My granddaughters do the same thing, so this song made a big difference in my life and my kids and grandkids life even though they don’t know it but that’s what started it off

I have always loved this one. Do what you want to me, but don’t mess with the people I love (especially those who aren’t strong enough to fight for themselves). That’s how I am… Rarely do I feel the need to fight for myself, but nothing I can’t or won’t do for my family and my dogs.

Origin of "turn the other cheek" is that back in the day, someone could be struck backhand and that was seen as an insult. But struck with the palm, it was insighting a fight. So, if somoene backhanded you, you were to turn your other cheek to the, daring them to open-hand slap that cheek, thus saying "do you really wanna fight?"
Great reaction! There is nothing harder as a parent than to try to find that balance between teaching one's child when and how to stand up for themselves when they must,and when and how they can find other solutions to settle disagreements with others. I have always liked this song, because even though he had always kept his promise to his father to "walk away from trouble when he could", he realized that this situation was not one that he COULD walk away from.
Yeah, you have to remember his father's words were "walk away from trouble IF you can" he didn't say ALWAYS
And the difference between "you don't have to fight to BE a man" and "sometimes you have to fight WHEN you are a man".
Break down Tommy's father's words and it's one of the best pieces of advice a man can learn. Tommy learned well, but learned it was incomplete, or not one hundred percent right, and thus amends it after he was done with the Gatlin Boys.
Promise me son, not to do the things I've done: learn from the mistakes of those around you, and try to be better, morally speaking. And try your best to keep your word.
Walk away from trouble if you can: try to avoid getting into confrontations with others if it isn't worth anything serious. Tommy had this down, and I hope that meant he'd just never seen a situation where anything serious was at stake.
Now, it won't mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek: you're not weak or a coward if you can forgive others for what they do to you. If anything, you're stronger for not giving into negative feelings and causing needless harm or suffering because you feel wronged.
I hope you're old enough to understand: I hope I raised you well enough that you can learn this lesson from me at such a young age. A more powerful line than it may seem, as it shows that Tommy's father was worried he wouldn't get out of prison to see him again, and regretted whatever led to him being there.
Son, you don't have to fight to be a man: you don't need to act tough to prove anything to anyone.
Now, when it comes to how Tommy amends it, it shows personal growth for him, and positive growth at that. As his whole life he'd let others nearly walk all over him and never stood up for himself. So his final straw moment, and the after effects, may show a change in how he lived from then on. I'd say up until the moment he picked up the picture, he was still a boy trying to be a man in his own way. When he'd walked home, he was the man he was meant to be
I promised you dad, not to do the things you'd done: he kept his word and learned from his father and avoided repeating the mistakes he'd made in life.
I walked away from trouble when I could: he avoided needless drama and problems, though possibly at his own expense.
Please don't think I'm weak, I couldn't turn the other cheek: where he changes the lyrics, he's realized you can't just let everything slide and forgive every single thing people do to you. Sometimes you need to do something, mostly trying to use words of course, to show you should be treated with respect. It's knowing the limits of what you should do and never crossing that line without a dire cause to do so.
Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man: if words won't work and others refuse to give you any options of a peaceful resolution, you may have to cross the line you drew.
Kenny Rogers was more than a musician. He was a raconteur, a storyteller, and stories have lessons, often valuable ones, if you pay attention. As a kid I liked this song, but never understood it. Years later, the lesson, and how important it is, are ingrained in me. Kenny was a good man, and the world needs to learn those lessons he tried to teach us more than ever.
Fun fact, this song inspired a movie, and Rogers, himself, had a role in it.

I was mesmerized by this, and I’ve always loved Kenny. I think when you hear songs from your youth, as an adult, you finally understand.
When I realized what it was about (literally heard this my whole life but had that "ah ha" moment), I sobbed and didn't listen to this song for years. It still makes me teary eyed but the story stands firm.
Whenever I hear the lyric about Tommy locking the door, I’m reminded of the movie “A Bronx Tale”, when the bikers are trashing the bar and the mobster locks the door and says “Now yous can’t leave”….

I've loved this song since I was a very small child who didn't fully understand it. Yet it always made me cry.
My dad always told me don’t ever get in a fight and let me find out you started it. He said walk away from it any chance you can but, if they show you they’re not gonna let you walk away you better hit them first and keep them down if they go down because when they get up there gonna be mad as hell.

This was a pretty big moment on country radio back in the day. And a bit controversial because the songwriter used the name Gatlin boys. There was a popular Country group at the time called the Gatlin Brothers so there was speculation as to what beef there might have been between the songwriter and them. Kenny Rogers was always a favorite growing up. Lots of great recordings by him.
