2023 Trek Roscoe 8. First ride and review.

- First time on my Brand new Trek Roscoe 8. I break down why I bought this bike, what other bikes I considered, the bike specs, first impressions, what I expected from this bike, and what I think it delivered. I also cover who might enjoy this bike. Here is a spoiler alert... This bike's fun dial goes to 11!

I've been debating between this and 3 other bikes you mentioned around the 6 minute mark.. this video alone has sold me on why I'm picking the Trek Roscoe 8 2023!!
9 months in, and I am still loving it. I have been meaning to do a long term review, but spoiler alert, it will be mainly positive. The bike is a great all around, do everything hardtail.

So after riding the Roscoe 8 since February in NJ flow trails. I changed out my M/L stem to a 60mm , and downsized the 2.60" Bontragers to 2.40" Maxxis Forekasters. BIG difference in handling. The bike doesn’t feel laggy on straights/climbs anymore and no noticeable drop in traction. Fast cornering is now tighter with no sidewall flex at the apex's. The 60mm stem dialed in more precision in the turns, less twitchy.
In my long term review, I had recommended to anyone doing more blue flow trails and big pedaling days would probably want to size down to 2.4 or 2.5. The 2.6s help in big chunky sections and rock gardens, but they definitely drag on the uphill. I went the other way with the stem and sized down to a 40mm with 35mm riser bars. For me, I felt to hunched over and too far over the front on steep gnarly sections of trail. On flow, I could definitely see they advantage of a longer stem.
Love the video! I haven't had a bike since 88-89 when I bought my Diamondback Topanga. I just bought the Roscoe 8 and really wish I had some SoCal trails in my backyard. I miss the desert out there

really like. Comparing it to full suss and even an xc bike is really helpful.

Excellent review. Just picked up the 8 for East Coast Trail in NJ. Nothing nearly as bomber as you're riding. The neutral rider position is perfect for flow. 🤙
The bike is perfect for flow. I actually prefer it over my Slash on flow trails. The bike just wants to charge those kinds of trails.

Google knows too much about me, I'm in my 50s looking to get back into MTB'ing and have been looking at the Roscoe 9 at my local Trek store and your video pops up in my feed ... uber creepy ... lol
I have that stuff happen all the time. The algorithm knows all. If you can afford the 9, I am sure that Fox Rythm 36 will be worth it. You know my opinion. I think it's a great bike.

@@brabbit3873 I agree. The 9 is really well speced. I think Trek really hit it out of the park with this one. Great balanced bike that climbs well, is perfect for flow and blue trails, but also can handle getting a little rowdy.
What an awesome review. With the Roscoe 8 on sale right now, it’s time for me to pull the trigger. Which ODI grips are you getting? Also considering switching out brake levers…any suggestions?? Thanks for the review!
ODI rogues. I like a thicker grip, As far as the brake levers go, any modern one finger lever would be better. The brakes are fine, but one finger levers would be a nice upgrade. Still riding it, and still loving it. Its a great bike.
Picked up a Roscoe 8 a few months ago and have been hitting trails in my area(San Diego). I agree, about the brake levers. Had to adjust mine as well for single finger use. Also changed my grips out for IDO Elite Pro grips. I run clipless pedals so on braking bumps can be hit as hard as I want/can handle. This bike is very capable and a blast to ride! Next upgrades will be Fork(lyrik) and Brakes(XT). I am also building a Slash from the frame up for a full Sus when it comes back in stock.
I think those would be solid upgrades, but I honestly think the shock and brakes are good enough to keep until I wear them out. Art school and stairsteps were definitely brake and shock testing trails and the bike handled them quite well. Upgraded to ODI rogue grips and they absorb the bumps much better than stock grips.
@@outdoorsandiego I agree, those two upgrades won’t be till next season. I also am a big rider being 6’4’’ and 230lbs ready to ride so it pushes those parts a little more.

If you upgrade so much, why didn't you just go for the 9?

The 9 was much more expensive and not in stock when I bought my 8. I haven’t upgraded the fork or brakes as of yet but did do the bars and stem. Eventually I will do the fork, the stock fork isn’t the best. The 9 is nice but the paint scheme isn’t my favorite, I prefer the blue on the 8.

Little more on its uphill capability, I like that more cuz im a lil more cautious on downhill and like to make it up on uphill? Im in mountains in az and 62 yrs old , been looking at the 8 for over a year havent pulled the trigger yet..Great video and great ride out of the gate, wow im impressed 👏
IT is overall a solid climber. If you want it more for climbing, I would size down to 2.4 tires, but other than that, I quite enjoy putting in longer days on this bike.

Usually both, about 60/40 rear/front. If a section is rocky, and and OTB is a possibility, I try to stay off the front as much as possible. Because the rear of a hardtail is bouncing around more than a full sus, though, you really need to learn to use the front brakes effectively.

I had a good time watching the video. I plan to buy Roscoe 9, but is it difficult to climb?
I actually think it is a solid climber. I climbed san juan trail and got up 25 minutes faster than on the Trek Slash. Part of the reason I got another hardtail was for longer climbing days.
I picked up a new Roscoe 8 resently too. Thinking about trying a shorter stem. I see the 9 comes with a 45mm. So I'm thinking the 8 should be able to take a 45mm or even a 40mm without messing the handling up to much. I'm 6'1" batween the L and XL. I felt way over the front of the bike on the L so up sized to the XL, which is why I'm thinking about backing the stem up a touch and maybe higher rise bars. What size did you go with ? And are you happy with the stock cockpit or you gonna make some changes ?
I considered a shorter stem and different bars down the road, but for now, I like the position. I feel pretty solid on steeps. I don't feel over the front too much. I might just mess with the stack height at some time
I’m 6’1”. I’m glad I stuck with the L and not XL. At first, I felt the bars were too close and saddle too far forward. Went to 110mm stem , then 70, and now I’m going back up to 50 in the spring. I since adjusted my body position and float over my saddle more often. On the L, i remain more nimble.
@ChazMichaelMike Thanks for the reply. I got a message from someone 6'5 asking if an XL would fit him. I had told him he may need to adjust the cockpit a little with a longer stem and riser bars that don't have backsweep. If a L fits you at 6'1, I think he might make an XL work

Great review mate. Ive been trying to decided between the Roscoe 8 and the Marin San Quentin 3. Thoughts?
The San Quentin looks really well speced and a good geometry. Marin bikes are usually a great deal for the price. With the Roscoes on sale, I think it's a pretty even call. Both are great bikes

Sorry for the delay in response. I do have an update video. The main change I made was going to a shorter stem and 35mm riser bars. If I had the money, I would switch out to a lyric or a fox 36 fork, but the 35 does a good enough job in most situations. I have beaten the bike up, and it's handled the abuse very well.
That Santee? I lived and rode in Santee when I was out there in the early 90's for training.

I would say the Roscoe. More modern geometry, 29 inch wheels. Its just a better bike for modern mountain bike trails, and I think you have more fun on it than the Marlin, which, of course, is the whole point of riding.

I'm still loving the bike. Everytime I bring it out, I'm amazed at how well it handles rough trails

It depends on where you are riding. Modern hardtails are so good that you can have a good time on all but the nastiest trails. Even then, I have survived some scary stuff on the Roscoe.
Seems like this roscoe 8 rear hubs sounds loud and nice,whats your opinion on them !?
The new Bontrager hubs are really solid. They have 108 tooth rear hub has great engagement and rolls really smooth. Its not loud like a hydra, but you still get that nice hub whine.

M/L, I think, is perfect. It's also what their sizing chart recommends

9 months later, and I'm still loving the bike. I did end up recently changing out the bar and stem to a 30mm riser bar and a 40mm stem. The total cost was right around $100.

Where is this trail that your riding if you don’t mind?
The trails are in San Clemente. The area is known as the Dog Park or Weed Patch.
Where do you usually ride? Do you always ride by yourself?
I ride with groups most of the time, but I still enjoy a solo trip once in a while
How do these do downhill?
The Roscoe is a solid downhill bike. I've ridden it on flow trails and steep trails, though rock gardens and chunk, and over gap jumps, and the bike has proven very capable. The only time I felt a little underbiked was through the car wreck rock garden in Aliso, but that garden is pretty gnarly even on an Enduro bike.
Trek roscoe 9 the best
Had I waited for it to go on sale, I would have gone 9. Even so, the only upgrade I would consider is the fork. The 8 is pretty well spec'd
