If you bought the ROSCOE 7 don't feel bad, on paper of course all those specs are worth it, but in real life you won't feel the difference unless you are paying attention to all those details. Enjoy the ride!
I recently bought the 7 after trying both back to back. Personally I couldn’t tell a great difference in the drivetrain and suspension. The biggest difference was the hub engagement. After spending a day with both though the 8 wasn’t true instant engagement and truly not worth the price increase to me. I can gladly ride the 7 and upgrade as needed.
I notice a lot of comments from people who don't understand the word "budget" Of course the more expensive bike is bound to have better parts and potentially more value, but some people don't have $3000 to spend on a 9, They can however afford the 7 and maybe in another year can afford a better fork, or afford better brakes and still get a year of riding in while earning their way to a better bike. For a lot of people, they may not even know what to look for in the differences between parts. Some people are just buying bikes so they can ride. We have gotten to a point where their is so much snobbery when it comes to what you ride... Anyone who bought a 7 and is loving it should ignore anyone who said "You should have bought this or that" or "You're gonna have to pay so much more in the end and should have just bought this instead" ... Ignore them. They only focus on spec and forget about budget and the fact that you are still riding regardless of what you bought. I was just getting into mountain biking back in 2019 and bought a budget Kona XC bike.. QR wheels, cheap hubs, cheap bb and cranks.. cheap everything really... hell, it has a rockshox 30 silver fork... I still ride it today and I still have so much fun on it.. I've upgraded parts as I went and don't feel bad about not buying a more expensive bike at the time because of the fun I have had with it and the experience of making it my own... The grips, brakes, drivetrain, rear hub, and seat post have all been upgraded and I still love riding it today. Just enjoy what you can afford and get your bike to where you want it to be when you can.. :)
I had a 7 on order but someone at the LBS bought an 8 and then returned it after one ride. Got it for 2k out the door. I feel good about it! I do really like that hub.
I went R9. Love the color way and the Fox Rhythm 36 up front. If o had to choose between the 7 or 8 though, I’d go 8, though I love the color way of the 7. I wish Trek would let people choose the frame color and components package like other direct to consumer brands. I feel like that would be the true value. Every person has their own personal preferences.
The 9 is obviously the best bike but I just can't with that colour, either the snot green or the metallic red. The lower models have way better colours imo.
I have the 22 R8, I wanted the 7 but I would have had to wait till November to get it. The main reason I wanted the 7 was because I love the paint scheme but so far after 5 weeks of riding and nearly 150 miles on my days off I am loving my R8. After watching your video I am glad I have the R8 and I would have upgraded to the R9 if my local shop had that one on order but they didn't.
I had put a deposit down on a Roscoe 7, but my dealer had a Roscoe 8 in Mulsanne Blue become available a couple weeks before the 7 was supposed to show up. I couldn't be happier with it; I love the upgraded components, and it's in my favorite color. Swapped out the pedals and grips and it's good to go!
The Roscoe 8 is on sale for $1700 now, they have too many after the manufacturing caught up. I'm sure the 7 is cheaper too, but to get the 8 for the $500 off, is a great buy. I'm going to pick mine up Friday. Thanks for the great video.
Trek increased the prices last week of the Roscoes appx. $70.00 per bike. I looked at the 7, 8, and 9. For me the 32 mm stanchions on the 7 fork are too thin and the Shimano 200 brakes are marginal at best. The 8 is better with the 108 POE on the rear hub and has a beefier 35 mm front shock but IMHO still lacks on braking with the Shimano 4000 series brakes. The 9 has way better 6000 series 4 piston brakes and a Fox Rhythm 36 shock. Thats more like it. The people that buy a 7 with intentions of upgrading will have to spend almost 1100 just to get a fox 36mm shock, plus another 3 ro 4 hundred to get shimano 6000 series brakes and 203 front and 180 rear rotors. For me it was a no brainer. I bought the 9. Nothing needs upgraded on that bike. Buy once, cry once , and you are done.
I agree with that, and if it makes you feel any better I was about to buy a fuse a few weeks back and specialized increased the price by $700 (2300 to 3000) because they know what the customers want. So with that in mind a $70 hike is marginal at best.
I bought the 9 as well, but some people don't want to or can't spend that much so buying a 7 is a good move, you still get the thru axles, 1x gears and a same frame.
Only took 5+ years for this bike not to suck, its actually a nice bike now. Drivetrain as people have pointed out is an absolute joke on the Roscoe 8. I'd rather have SLX over GX with a NX Cassette.
The Recon forks have steel stantions - so even though they are only 32mm and not 35mm they still have plenty of strength (in the same way steel frames can be thinner than aluminium frames) and I have not noticed much difference to the Yari fork I had on my previous bike which had 35mm stantions. There may be a very small amount of extra flex but it is very hard to tell - so not a major difference. The main benefit of upgrading a fork which I hope to do in the future is to save weight and have a better air spring and damper. I will be looking at a basic Pike which will save nearly 400g in weight and should have a plusher suspension action. The 35 is still a basic fork and is a similar weight to the Recon so has a very marginal advantage. Not worth upgrading to in my opinion. Another area of concern with the 8 and something I have experienced with a previous bike is the NX cassette. It is very expensive to replace and this is a part that will need replacing. The deorre cassette gives better shifting, is slightly lighter and cheaper. I am glad my 7 has deorre and I have simply added an XT shifter to have a fantastic drivetrain. This gives much better shifting than the NX shifter with multi shifts possible both up and down. Otherwise a good review but as others have said if you can only afford the cheaper bike the real world differences are small and you can pick the upgrades you want when you can afford them.
Thanks for this detailed evaluation. Just picked up an R7 as my first real bike and as a heavier rider (270lbs), I was wondering if I should’ve gone with the 8 for $200 bucks difference currently mainly due to the fork. I think maintenance costs drove me more to the shimano groupset. I think it’ll be good enough to see me through intermediate progression as I don’t plan on doing any serious jumps
I recently bought a 7. Ended up coming up with a new takeoff fox performance 34 locally for $400 which I think is a better fork than the Rockshox 35 anyway. Replaced the front rotor with a 203 mill. Put Renthal fat bars on but that was mostly to get more rise. So I’m in it for roughly $500 extra at this point but I got a better fork and spent some money to tailor it to me. Now I don’t have the four piston brakes or quick engagement hub but those items aren’t important to me or at least not yet. Maybe in time. Still happy I chose the 7 overall.
If you are going to spend all that extra $ and still thinking of spending more you should’ve gone for the 8 at least and probs the 9. It’s a false economy to do it the way you have done. Yours is a classic case of buying the lower spec, but not being happy and really wanting the higher spec all along and then trying to play catch up with what you’ve bought and trying to make amends. Far better to bite the bullet and buy the higher spec from the get go.
@@paddyotoole2058 I don’t really see it that way because I wouldn’t have been happy with many of the components on the 8. I really think I would’ve changed the same items. Now potentially the 9 but that’s a lot more money than I paid to make my 7 what I wanted. Depends on whether you want to brag about your kit or make the choices you personally want
I think Trek missed the mark on the R8 with the drive train, fork and brakes. The Deore (6100) brakes are a better brake. A lower level Pike or Revelation would have been a better way to go. Both are upgradable, unlike the 35. On the drive train they should have stayed with the Deore.
if the Drivetrain on the 8 was the Deore it would be my pic. the effort to upgrade to a 10-51 or 10 - 50 (new freehub body need) is too much cost and effort. Trek messed the spec up imho. Shame really.
I have a Roscoe 7 pre-ordered since the end of last year. First, I absolutely love the color scheme but I also simply don't have the budget for the Roscoe 8 atm. Since I'm also a beginner I don't think the 32mm stanchions will be a problem to start with. Brakes would probably have to be swapped on both bikes which I'll probably do rather sooner than later so the only thing I really miss is the high engagement hub. However, the Shimano FH-MT510 freehub at least comes with Shimano Quick Engagement, so 32 or 38 points of engagement so at least it's not completely terrible.
Brake rotors on both these bikes are the new Chinese discs. They're stamped instead of lasercut. Complete garbage, some are tacos out of the box. All of the cross drilled holes are bent. You can see it in this video, 1 side is concave and the other convex

I have been looking at the r7 vs r9 and lets be honest, the best thing about r7 is the colour, and this is why I am looking at it, however it is no brainer that the r9 Is the best.
I love the new roscoe, I have the 2020 Roscoe seven at this point I have completely rebuilt the whole thing. Just got done doing a full service on the fork. Last thing I need to do now is get some new tires they’re currently Maxis 27.5‘s (semi fat) 2.80mm could you recommend a set of rubbers?
Just get on, ride,, and have fun. A brake upgrade is going to be at least $500 as well for the 7. Obviously the 8 is a better bike but it could use some upgrades too. Either way your going to put money into both bikes to make them truly capable.
November 23 the 7 is currently discounted to 1629 while the 8 has a 400 discount and is priced 1999$ which makes the gap 370$. The 9 is 2499$. I wish all the models were available in the black like the 7. No word on when prices may rise back to whatever normal will be.
Bought the roscoe 7 in xl. Immediately upgraded the fork to a marzocchi bomber and replaced with some new pedals and have since turned it into a heavy trail/Enduro hardball. It costed me just a little north of what the 8 would cost with better suspension. I would go this route instead of spending the money on the 9 or 8. The only difference you might really notice is the brakes....they're fine but they are not as reactive and stiff.
@@JooKushin Z2 with 150 mm of travel. I use it as an aggressive trail bike. It handles big hits very well. If you want to send it off bigger drops or features go with the Z1.
None of these models have group-set continuity though which is frustrating. 7 should equal Deore, 8 should equal SLX, and 9 should equal XT. Even with the top-end 9 you still get a Shimano soup… I just bought a 7 and then XT’ed everything except for the crank. Shopping around and taking advantage of a few sales, it ended up the same price as a 9 and I got what I actually wanted. Also have the benefit of the old group set for emergency spares.
Good video, trek 7 or 8 are both great bikes? I think the 8 is worth the difference and now in 2024 you can get the 8 for 1600 great bike fir thst for sure
Is this the best bike for the budget? I can afford the roscoe 7 and was planning on getting it but I’m wondering if there are any other good options for that price point.
This was very interesting. Not sure but I think you verbally got the price wrong on the 8. You said 29 and the writing on the video said 99. I would be incredibly happy to have either of these lovely bikes. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Both bikes are nice but unfortunately with the economy I’d go 7 - I have noticed a few other reviews where the cranks have varied so I’m guessing Trek is having problems sourcing Deore cranks which are the spec’s on the websites. I think to me crossing over the 2000.00 price point I’d just try to go to a full suspension MTB.
@@Mapantz1 yes I agree on the specs but to me and I’m not a diehard MTB rider I’d get a cushy ride for the few hundred dollars more. I’m old lol 😂. super curious what your decision would be with the current Trek sale going and $350 between them. The R7 is $1649 and the R8 is $1999 right now. Seems like an even stronger endorsement for the Roscoe 8 at this point.

Except for the Roscoe 6 they all went on sale. The 7 on sale is a lot better than the 6 at regular price though. What I don't understand is why certain colors of the 7 say they are 1,650 regular price and others say 1,900 regular price. Do to know why that is?
Surprised you called it a draw on the brakes. I have a Dual Sport 3 with the same brakes as the R7. I’d never buy a MTB with those brakes. I think they are terrible.
@@Jamesthebikeguy that's disappointing to hear as I am searching for my first MTB in this price range. I figured a four piston caliper and much larger rotors would be a huge step up in stopping power. Thanks for your reply, I guess I'll skip on the Roscoe.
OK, I’ve never heard of this before so help me out. To change from one cassette to another, both the same number of cogs, I need to change the freehub body? Is that true or an error. I’ve been swapping cassettes for decades and never heard of this. If I switch to a better level cassette that has a larger big ring will it still work with the freehub body that fits the 10? All that said, I’m not sure there would be a ton of times I would need a 10 over an 11.
The New 12 speed cassette use (1) of three different freehub. The 12speed drivetrains that have the smallest tooth of 11 will use a standard "Shimano HG" freehub. 12speed Shimano Deore and up with a 10tooth cog use something called "Shimano Microspline" 12speed SRAM cassette that have a 10tooth cog use the "SRAM XD Driver" So you can swap cassette just like the old days if they use the same type of freehub. In this case the limiting factor is Trek used a NX cassette that mounts on a HG freehub and not compatible with better quality higher range cassettes.
Is it just me but I would pay 500 extra for the better paint job 😂 your already spending a lot so might as well get what you want. Also my specialized Fuse is better then both 😏

I have been looking at the r7 vs r9 and lets be honest, the best thing about r7 is the colour, and this is why I am looking at it, however it is no brainer that the r9
Is the best.
Thanks for the review. I’m about to buy the 2023 R8 for $1999 tomorrow
How you like so far ? I’m on the fence of getting one this month
@@caaande I ended up not making the purchase yet. I am stuck between the commencal meta ht , the San Quentin 3 and the Roscoe 8. Can’t make up my mind
Right on. Now I’m looking at the roscoe 9
@@caaande The R9 is badass!
We're getting a few for our NICA team, the 8 seems a better choice; better wheels, weight, and forks.
Just get on, ride,, and have fun. A brake upgrade is going to be at least $500 as well for the 7. Obviously the 8 is a better bike but it could use some upgrades too. Either way your going to put money into both bikes to make them truly capable.
Roscoe 8 vs 9 comparison would be cool
November 23 the 7 is currently discounted to 1629 while the 8 has a 400 discount and is priced 1999$ which makes the gap 370$. The 9 is 2499$. I wish all the models were available in the black like the 7. No word on when prices may rise back to whatever normal will be.
I hope they’ll do a new 2023 8 bc the new 7 race face drivetrain is really nice tbh
IMO Roscoe 8 wins all categories and is well worth the price difference. I’m getting a 23’ Roscoe 8 for 2k.
Would agree, except for the difference in the hub that the 8-9 come with.
@@AnAbortiveRomance totally.
I was thinking of buying the roscoe 7 as well as upgrading the fork witch one did you go with the z1or z2?
@@JooKushin Z2 with 150 mm of travel. I use it as an aggressive trail bike. It handles big hits very well. If you want to send it off bigger drops or features go with the Z1.
I have an 8 after 10+ years with no Mtn bike. Wow what a difference. Would have gotten a 9 but none available in several states that I checked??
None of these models have group-set continuity though which is frustrating. 7 should equal Deore, 8 should equal SLX, and 9 should equal XT. Even with the top-end 9 you still get a Shimano soup…
I just bought a 7 and then XT’ed everything except for the crank. Shopping around and taking advantage of a few sales, it ended up the same price as a 9 and I got what I actually wanted. Also have the benefit of the old group set for emergency spares.
I genuinely think the 8 is bad value. I'd have to go for either the 7 or the 9.
Good video, trek 7 or 8 are both great bikes? I think the 8 is worth the difference and now in 2024 you can get the 8 for 1600 great bike fir thst for sure
Where did you see 1600 for r8?
@@xiaoliu6716in Germany is now 1456€
Is this the best bike for the budget? I can afford the roscoe 7 and was planning on getting it but I’m wondering if there are any other good options for that price point.
This vid is great! I have the 7 and love it! I think the official tire max size is 2.6? Do you know if it will take a 3.0 or 2.8?
This was very interesting. Not sure but I think you verbally got the price wrong on the 8. You said 29 and the writing on the video said 99. I would be incredibly happy to have either of these lovely bikes. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thanks for the catch. Sleep deprived and not proof reading my work.
No worries. Thanks for the video
The trouble with that is, you end up with a poor spec full sus. You'd need to go beyond 3000 to match specs.
@@Mapantz1 yes I agree on the specs but to me and I’m not a diehard MTB rider I’d get a cushy ride for the few hundred dollars more. I’m old lol 😂. Actually the Roscoe 7 is the bike I have been thinking about getting, fits the budget and I dig hard tails for bike camping and some fire road rides with friends.
@@jmounce50 I like the paint job on the 8, but I'm not willing to go up to that price. lol
i got a praxis crank, wich i believe is a minor upgrade, its lighter and still forged aluminum, with center lock sproket.
Just bought a Roscoe 8 for $2000 on sale
super curious what your decision would be with the current Trek sale going and $350 between them. The R7 is $1649 and the R8 is $1999 right now. Seems like an even stronger endorsement for the Roscoe 8 at this point.
The Roscoe 8 would be my take at $2,000
@@JamesthebikeguyThe Roscoe 8 is now selling for 1.6k. The 7 is selling for 1.4k. I wanted to go for the Roscoe 6 since I'm not sure how much riding I'll do. But all the sizes sold out at regular price. It never went on sale. So which one should I get now?
Did you end up buying any of the Roscoe bikes?
@@Jose-sy1je I DID! I bought a Roscoe 8. LOVE it
@@TheQuikMix I was between the Roscoe 8 and 7. Ended up going for the 8 as well 😐 Soon it'll be ready at store for pickup lol. Let's see how that works out
FOR MOST PART ROSCO 7 will do me not much for hills here so the better brakes wont matter BUT l did notice the head angle is more sloped on the 8 l assume longer shocks ?
It look like little handheld bikes when he pointed down at the camera for a moment
Great price on Rocoe 8 right now
Except for the Roscoe 6 they all went on sale. The 7 on sale is a lot better than the 6 at regular price though. What I don't understand is why certain colors of the 7 say they are 1,650 regular price and others say 1,900 regular price. Do to know why that is?
So if I got the Roscoe 8, and upgraded SRAM XG-1275 GX EAGLE 12-SPEED CASSETTE 10-50T would I still be able to use hub and would it be worth it ?
Give me Deore over NX every day of the week.
Ill take shimano 1x12 over pg1210 any day. As ive heard 12010 its cheapest 12x you can get. Tbh i prefer 1x10 anyway :D
Hi
In Europe is 700 € different so I take the R7 with gx axs and four piston break. I hope the wheels wiil good for me
How much is the Roscoe 7 selling for in Europe? I saw that prices for those Roscoe bikes are much cheaper than here
It is not brand new for 2023. You keep quoting 2023
It’s new for 2022
I got the Roscoe 8
How about the 8 vs 9?
If you're already spending that kind of money just get the 9. It's much better.
Surprised you called it a draw on the brakes. I have a Dual Sport 3 with the same brakes as the R7. I’d never buy a MTB with those brakes. I think they are terrible.
While I agree they are not the best, the Roscoe 8's brakes are hardly any better. Either bike is due for a brake upgrade down the line
@@Jamesthebikeguy that's disappointing to hear as I am searching for my first MTB in this price range. I figured a four piston caliper and much larger rotors would be a huge step up in stopping power. Thanks for your reply, I guess I'll skip on the Roscoe.
roscoe 7
I think if you have enough money get the 8 ...i would if i had the money
Roscoe 7 for me
OK, I’ve never heard of this before so help me out.
12speed Shimano Deore and up with a 10tooth cog use something called "Shimano Microspline"
12speed SRAM cassette that have a 10tooth cog use the "SRAM XD Driver"
So you can swap cassette just like the old days if they use the same type of freehub. In this case the limiting factor is Trek used a NX cassette that mounts on a HG freehub and not compatible with better quality higher range cassettes.
@@Jamesthebikeguy Thanks very much,, reminds of that ill fated Shimano 10 speed freehub body back in the day.
Is it just me but I would pay 500 extra for the better paint job 😂 your already spending a lot so might as well get what you want.
Also my specialized Fuse is better then both 😏
I just ordered a rosco 8
Is 73 degree really considered steep for a seat tube angle?
My Kona lava dome has steeper, and it is half the price of this TREK...
Exactly $500? I make that $570
Roscoe 7 is now $1899 lol
Yep, shoot. I messed that up. Started the video prior to price changes and didn't get everything correct. Whoops

Where can I buy the frame only of Roscoe 8?
Your Trek dealer
I got the roscoe 7 but it didn’t feel as good as the 9 so I got the 9
That is kinda how it works 😂
Before this video I would’ve gone R8 but disappointing to hear the hub doesn’t allow a 10t cassette.
but you can swap the freehub, which Bontrager offers on their site.
@@mellissanash7517 Where abouts on the site?
Your wife chooses the freaking bike, i am just on for the ride
I Personally dont like Trek
their bikes are Overrated.
but in this review.
interms of frame color, ill pick the 8. but interms of spec?
ill Choose 7.
why? if had this bike.
either ill replace its fork to a Higher-end Rockshox/Fox
then Drivetrain and brakes ill go for Shimano XT.
and Hub DT-Swiss or Hope
Sounds like the Roscoe 9 has the upgrades out of the box.
sold my 7's recon for 200$
My choice is none of them. Thanks for review.

NICE...........
You must be the last one living in a pandemic!
Lol, not sure what that means
@@Jamesthebikeguy probably meaning no one can get any bikes still but you somehow have one.
These were new for 22 not 23. The model to get is the 9. Both the 7 and 8 have the junk Motion Control damper. And both dampers CANNOT be upgraded. Total waste, ime. The 9 has a very good Fox 36 with a Grip damper.
Watch the review of the 9 on Hardtail Party.
If you read the specs on the Shimano 200 brakes they are in paper much less powerful
Yet in practice both are not especially great and worth upgrading in the future
$2000 for cup n cone hubs and no dropper? Is there even a frame hole for a dropper cable?
Both bikes have droppers, and are internally routed
❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥
My 2007 cannondale f7 weighs less 😂
Cool story.
Well it's outdated.
My 1975 vintage road bike is also much lighter. And that means....?
that means the Roscoe will shred your bike into pieces anyway hahaha
Great video!
And great bikes!
As for the tyres, are they tubeless or tubeless ready, so with inner tubes?
Thanks!
