A Dirt Jumper at 54? Learning a new MTB discipline in my middle age.
Ever been interested in a Dirt Jumper? I was, so I bought an Airborne Skyhawk for my 54th birthday, and headed off to my local bike park and Pumptracks. What a blast.
Here is a little footage and some initial thoughts on the purchase

Luiseno Bike Park. Rolling Acorn

Rolling Acorn is one of the two green trails at Luiseno. Despite its green rating, this trail is fast, fun and has great flow.
Luiseno Bike Park. Sage

trying to match Aaron's pace on Sage at Luiseno bike park. This was our second run on the trail. Luiseno has built some great flow trails, but most of them have a few out of character spots that can mess up the flow. Usually, its a sharp turn with no berm. Every corner on Sage, though, is a solid berm that allows you to the keep the flow going. This trail is a blast!

Looks like PQ but the Jumpline I know…. Time to search Google Maps
On second thought those towers look too big for PQ
What trail is this?
The main jumpline at San Clemente
looks like fun on a bun
I’m right down the road in SA. Trek shops here pretty good too. Hiring the right people. You gotta sub 👍🏼
Thanks for the sub
Good on ya! Going from a full squish to a DJ always freaks me out for the first while. They reeeally want to send you haha.
It's been a smooth transition so far, but there have been a couple close calls. They definitely let you know when you're timing and technique is off
All hail the garage from hell lol
It's is a disaster of epic proportions for sure
Im 40 just started on DJ 7 months ago. Got some videos on my channel. Nice to see you on DJ on your 54 years..im happy for you.
I will check them out
29er mtbs just don’t feel great at these new bike parks. Just a heads up your camera microphone has a background hum.
Only con: getting back on the big rig and realizing how laughably unplayful and dead modern mountain bikes feel. Luckily pump tracks help build that muscle and conditioning to get some lift out of big mountain bikes as well. Even if you have to adjust back to the geo.
I get that for sure. On our last ride, my riding partner was singing the praises of his trail bike and me for my Roscoe hardtail for that same reason. They are so playful and responsive. Of course, both of us were on the Enduro rigs because his surgically repaired shoulder and my still broken hand can't handle the abuse right now unless we are on enduro rigs.
@@outdoorsandiego ahh the eternal catch 22 of riding super hard on enduro rigs and getting injured, and then needing the enduro rigs to continue riding lol. unless it happened on a hardtail/DJ. but man the modern big rigs basically IMPLORE you to ride over your head. nearly DH bikes.
@TeddyParker it was on the Enduro, but I wasn't riding over my head. Just a momentary lapse of concentration. Went over a rock roll I've done twice before, but I set up too far right and missed the built up transition. I've ridden way scarier on my hardtail. I just made a dumb mistake, and my index finger is paying the price
@@outdoorsandiego ya thats that pay to play nature of riding. I was riding at Soaks and just randomly clipped my foot on the outer edge, not even the pedal, on a rock. It's been the longest lasting and most nagging injury I've ever had. I never got it scanned because it didn't hurt that much or seem like a big deal. But now I can hardly finish out a day at the bike park before my foot is killing me. riding the rough stuff. but walking around I'm generally fine. It's a weird one.
5:45 What shop in San Marcos?
Trek San Marcos
1:53 rock roll, anything special to it? Looks terrifying from up top with no dirt transfer. But looking at it from the side, there seems to be a decent slope upon getting down.
It's very steep, but there is a dirt transfer.
Do secret shit
Ay where is that I live in San Diego
P hill, San Marcos
Is this area kninda by Santee Lakes Campground ? Looking for somewhere to ride .. when i head out there 🤙
Ted's is another part of SD. The area you are thinking of is Sycamore/Mel Brooks
The gaps looks really nice
It's a well built jumpline
You made that look easy And trust me it's not
Thank you. Mongo definitely packs a punch
What bike?, Nice riding!
2021 Trek Slash 9.8
@@outdoorsandiego I have an 8 on layaway..haven't ridden in 12 or so years. I hope I will love it. Either way it will better than my 20 year old rockhopper.
@@Sam-mu5xh I think you will really like it. The Slash is a beast of a bike. It will do anything you want it to do.
@@outdoorsandiego I should have specified, it's a roscoe 8. I have researched the hell out if it, for 1,600 I think it is a good deal.
@Sam-mu5xh I have a Roscoe 8, and I love it. I can ride 95% of the trails I ride on the Slash, and I prefer it on more flowy trails and for endurance days. It's a very capable hardtail at a very reasonable price right now
sick! Teds looks so fun. gotta make it out sometime
It's as good as it looks
From over 20 bikes i had different manufactures to top of the line sworks stumpy evo( current bike) my 2022 slash was the best hands down. Really miss thay bike.
I'm a fan, for sure. The bike does everything I need it to do
That last bit was smooooooth
Dude that looks so fun man. Definitely gonna have to go visit you out there this fall!
I’m trying to figure out if I should get that bike
1 out of 10 how much would you recommend that bike?
I'd like to qualify my response by saying this is my first DJ. I really like the bike. It's feels good in the air, it's very responsive, and it comes with a very good fork for the price. I consulted with an experienced dirt jumper before buying it, and he approved. Personally, I think it's the best Intro bike on the market for the price
I would give it a 9. Minus one point for the seat. That's it.
Just picked a Roscoe 8 up as my first real bike. Have a group of friends who are going to tech me how to really do some single track stuff. I’m pumped. I also feel like I bought way more than I can handle.
Like any new bike, it will take a little time to get used to. If you have never ridden a 29er before, it is a different experience for sure. The good thing is you bought a bike that is capable and you can improve on without worrying that you don't have enough bike
What he said. I have this bike and It’s amazing.
we were here maybe a month ago and the climb plus the heat was brutal!! definitely worth it on the way down though
What stem and handlebar are you using on your roscoe 8
Spank spoon stem, 40mm, and PNW range handlebars 35mm riser
🔥
Outstanding 👍🏻
Can someone help is it better to take roscoe 9 or roscoe 8? Is it a huge difference?
Considering how cheap the 9 is right .now, I would probably say it's worth it to buy the Roscoe 9. The 8 works really well, but the 9 has a considerably better fork
That looks like the Otay mountain range/Otay Lake. I pedal there from my home until May when it gets hot and the rattlers come out.
Nice loop….still can’t figure out where this is 0:27 how did you guys catch the trail from here? Did you climb up through the campground? I usually catch it off of cork screw trail…👍
We started at the base of corkscrew. After that, I was pretty much lost.
ooo i know that area but i havent ridden there yet. ive ridden teds a bunch but i dont think id be able to handle these trails as well as i do others lol
Ted's has pretty serious trails for sure, but it's definitely worth checking out
Hi! Is there puncture thorns on the trails?
Didn't run into any
Thanks for the fast reply, the reason why I asked because my son and I went to Fullerton Loop and we had a lot of thorns in our tires front and rear. I will try Marshall Canyon thank you.
Hell Yeah! I ride roller coaster a bunch...So fun!
Nice stem what brand is that?
I will double check, but I believe I switched to a race face 35mm with pnw 25 mm riser bars. The stock stem put me a little too far out over the front tire and the bars World touch too low for my taste. This is a very capable hardtail but the stock set up is a little to XC for my taste
And of course the Kustom Cap Sugar skull. That's mandatory for every bike I own
It's actually a Spank Spike spoon stem. It's a 40mm stem compared to the 50mm that came on the bike. They are $40 at Jenson.
Wouldn't mind checking out. Looks awesome. I live in Corona but visit SD often. They do look like public trails so not sure why you wouldn't drop pin but open to contacting
If you want to head down here and ride, let me know. Shoot me a message on IG, @outdoorsandiego2020. Unless the trails are on Trailforks, I would rather err on the side of caution
@@outdoorsandiego Open to ride Friday morning? Have plans to ride Thursday evening down that way and could ride in morning before heading back up
@@billbaker9043 Friday would work. Shoot me a message on Instagram to confirm
Which tires did you get?
I ended up staying with the Bontragers. I changed out the rear with a SE 4. I have had bad luck with my Bontrager rear tires ripping a knobby, but the SE4 has withstood some pretty good abuse. Still, when it wears out or rips, I will switch out to a Maxxis DHR 11
Awesome review man just brought one yesterday to get back into mountain biking after a long break
Nice trail. Nice riding!
Lobo is a blast, even if it got a little beat up.
Ynot
I stand corrected
Nice
Great video! Is the jump line close to joons detour ? I’d love to check it out!
50 years old, just started back riding. I used to road bike in my teens, then started mountain biking when I moved to Santee while going through training in San Diego. Kept mountain biking in Virginia, and even did a couple of races. Stopped riding in the late 90's. Just got my Roscoe 8 yesterday, and I've done two rides of about 5 miles each. Living in the New Orleans area, so the trails aren't too crazy, but my wrists and all is sore already just from that little bit of riding. I did add the Shimano clip/flat pedal combo to the bike. I used to always ride clipped in. Now days, I see a lot of videos with people just riding flat pedals with the spikes. Just seems like my feet slip doing that. Hope I get at least a little good at biking like I used to be.
Welcome back. I ride with people who swear by clipless. It's basically a personal preference. For putting in the miles, clipless is best for sure. I just hate them for slow tech. I did put clipless back on my XC bike
Fun to watch! You are fast and getting this up. Nice job
you got to ride with the legend!
It was cool to finally get a full day of riding with Brett. We have run into each other on the trails multiple times, but this was our time getting in a full ride together.
@@outdoorsandiego he is a great person to hang out with and ride with
That Santee? I lived and rode in Santee when I was out there in the early 90's for training.
San Clemente, but I ride at santee a fair amount
Thanks for sharing! Absolutely agree, so many trails on such a small area. Tbh, only that one hill near the Las Ramblas trailhead parking has 6 trails (b-lines, shovelhead, choke&coyote, chucks town, 2ball&bone, g spot) and for me usually that's good enough for a few hours or going up&down :) As for the b-line, I've hiked up the trail before, before I realized that someone can ride on it, and before I've ridden it myself. Now I'd never hike it, neither I'd try climb it on a bike :) So I absolutely understand why you didn't expect to see the two guys climbing :) Btw, just quick question about the Secret S..t. I've never ridden it but based on the map it looks like it ends in some private property complex or so. Are there any problems to ride out of it? Is it some gated community or there some connector back to Las Ramblas trails?
There are two climb outs of S.S where you can get out of the community quickly. I've never had an issue with the homeowners, but I try to be very respectful, so there are no issues.
Little more on its uphill capability, I like that more cuz im a lil more cautious on downhill and like to make it up on uphill? Im in mountains in az and 62 yrs old , been looking at the 8 for over a year havent pulled the trigger yet..Great video and great ride out of the gate, wow im impressed 👏
IT is overall a solid climber. If you want it more for climbing, I would size down to 2.4 tires, but other than that, I quite enjoy putting in longer days on this bike.
@@outdoorsandiego Love your review and feedback.
