"I can't wait to... put my headphones on, sit back and just marinate in this music". That phrase right there sums up this entire album absolutely perfectly. I love your choice of the word "marinate" here. Not only does it imply surrounding yourself with the music, but marination is also a transformative process. You can't come out of it without being changed for the better and I don't think there's a more apt phrasing for what this song and album can do. I don't know if this was a deliberate choice of words, or just a spur of the moment comment that nailed it perfectly, but either way very well said. Thank you for your words and wisdom on this.

I only learned of Nightwish following reaction videos during the initial covid lockdown a year ago. First I found Floor and thus Nightwish. I listened a little to Shoemaker, but put it on the shelf for awhile. So glad I did. I found that first I needed to get an education as to why I liked hearing Nightwish. Through the informed comments of vocalists, musicians, voice teachers, music teachers composers and long-term Nightwish aficionados, I gradually gained an education about Tuomas, the Nightwish journey, the passion of the Nightwish Army and the quality and expertise of each person.
Only then could I come back, and through watching several reaction videos could I even begin to value and appreciate the tribute they gave to Eugene Shoemaker.
Initially I knew I enjoyed Nightwish, but it was more like me eating at a greasy spoon diner and not knowing the quality of the cuisine at the French restaurant in the city. Today I feasted on Shoemaker and value even more what Tuomas, Floor and the entire group bring to us.

For me, Nightwish in general belongs to those things that I, as 48 years old middle aged male, regret that I haven’t found earlier than half a year ago. It’s really increadible band. We should give most of the credit to Tuomas and Floor, but all the other members as well. They all play so well together. And the last but not least... one of the best live bands ever.

People tend to intially fall in love with the female vocalist, then they realize just how amazing all the compositions are and they grow in love for Tuomas. Then you realize just how much Marko does and you go 'damn, he's also impressive' and eventually people realize that the drums are also flawless, as is the electric guitar and all the stuff Troy plays. Give it some time, eventually you will have equal love for all members :)

This is such a beautiful tribute. I've always been an astronomy fan, and remember when the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet broke apart and slammed into Jupiter. The new album will be a monster live. I'm allready looking forward to what Tuomas plans to do (acoustically and visually). I allready know Floor will kill it live and with the energy, this band generates you can power the entire city for a week. It's gonna be sick.
P.S: "laudato si ad astra" means "all praise be to the stars"

    • @MichaelTilton
      @MichaelTilton 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Laudato si' is the second encyclical of Pope Francis. The encyclical has the subtitle "on care for our common home". This is itself clear from the tenor of the album
Ad Astra means "to the stars", as you have noted. Which fits this song very well.
Both together makes the message, "Take care of our common home until we go to the stars"
We can do both, without neglecting the other.
      (My $.02 worth anyways)

    • @arturama8581
      @arturama8581 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MichaelTilton Found yet another explanation. Not my own, just found it. The original poster is Brian Yoder (YT)
      ***
The "Laudato Si" and "Ad Astra" bits at the end meant respectively "Praise be" and "To the stars". But there's a little more to it than just that.
"Laudato Si" is a phrase taken from St. Francis of Assissi's famous song "The Canticle of the Sun", in which he praises the air, water, fire, sun, planets, animals, etc. as being our brothers and sisters. Death as well. And the most notable line regarding this song was:
"Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle:
in celu l'ài formate clarite et pretiose et belle."
      which means:
"Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful."
The term "Ad astra" is used in a variety of places in ancient Latin writings as well as in some modern contexts. Beyond its literal meaning, it implies the accomplishment of something that is practically impossible or very difficult. The first known usage is from Virgil in The Aneid, where he wrote "sic itur ad astra" or "thus one journeys to the stars" with the idea that it is how one accomplishes the impossible, and "opta ardua pennis astra sequi" or "desire to pursue the high (or hard to reach) stars on wings" when Aeneas taunts Turnus in combat. Another origin is Seneca the Younger, who wrote "non est ad astra mollis e terris via" or "there is no easy way from the earth to the stars".
      ***
And that's the problem with dead languages. Nobody agrees and you can't ask a native speaker ;)

Hello Christi, thank you for this reaction - yes, I'm back for a while, let's see how long I can last this time.
Yes, Tuomas is a genius - Nightwish is a collection of musical geniuses. From the composer to the individual musicians to the singer.
With this album Nightwish made themselves immortal in my eyes. They have founded a completely new genre. They are now so far above business - away from all commercial, it's just art, nothing else.
The lyrics are not a mass product and therefore not understood by many, maybe one reason why they are not more successful commercially. But it is wanted by all band members - they do what they enjoy and they are happy to accept it. In return they don't have to adapt and bend, which is a blessing for those who love this kind of music and poetry.
I wish you all the best for the future... Yours truly, Grey...

please don't misunderstand me about my first post. I never said that they don't have commercial success, they could have more success if they were more mainstream. But this is not what Tuomas and the whole band wanted.
Even if you have an insight into the fan scene of Nightwish - for many people this album is "the worst" album Nightwish ever released. This album splits, I don't know if this is what was intended - for me personally it is by far the best album that has been released in the last decades. Precisely because it puts its main focus on poetry and composition.

    [Edit]
Alright SO... Absolutely wonderful reaction as expected, thank you so much for your detailed thoughts and analysis! I love how much you were appreciating the composition and layers, and thanks to your words I now immediately started dreaming of such a concert event as well... Great idea!!!
And at the end... "holy moment" just nailed it. I'm always on a loss for words, so thank you for finding some! ;)
As much as you enjoyed this one I can't help but need you to react to 'Music' as well, you will definitely ADORE it. I have listened to that song at least 30 times by now and still always hear some details I had never realized before. The lyrics and meaning are wonderful there just like with Shoemaker, and I'm sure you'd be stunned by how stunningly Floor manages to sing those 'mad songwriter' vocal melodies. (There's also a very high part in 'Music', totally different from the one in Shoemaker, but also VERY notable.)
Looking forward to your next video(s)!!!

Troy is actually singing the male portion. Troy has a really great voice! He also is the lead vocalist on the song, "Harvest."
Tuomas Holopainen wanted to be a Marine Biologist in his younger days. He evidently had a part of his gifts that was playing the piano and composing exceptional music.
Oh...there is a live version of this song from their concert at "Pink Pop!" I have listened to the whole concert the day after the concert!
I sang in one of those " Traveling Chorus' " back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. It was a lot of fun! I was one of the 3 guys that could sing the bass portions in our troop! We sang some C&W music that was popular at that time also...along with some of the skits our choir leader wrote for 5 of us guy's to perform.... Similar to the old TV show "Hee Haw!"

Altamullen Road only has one song out I believe - as far as I know. :) Thanks again, Christi!

After I seen that was Troy doing the male lead on the chorus, I didn't realize that he is very good. I knew Marco is awesome in vocals.
After listening Nightwish albums for awhile, Tuomas created a masterpiece of this new album. I knew that he studied fine arts in music in Finland. As you know that Hard Rock and Heavy Metal got its roots in Classical. Because an anthropologist who is also a Metal Head did a multi parts documentary on the origins of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. He traced all way back to Mozart's time. Now, Tuomas blended both Hard Rock and Classical into Symphonic Metal.

Listen to her Amazing Grace at the Classics is Groot concert in South Africa when she was just 13. Also the Flower duet with Corlea Botha again at the age of 13 is fantastic. Her O Solo Mio duet with Patrizio Buanne when she was just 10 years old will blow your socks off. Do yourself a favor and watch her you will not be disappointed,on the contrary i think you'll be amazed. Have fun watching this little piece of dynamite.

Subbed - Your analysis of several of Floor's songs have added to my understanding. I have been a Floor fan 'Floorever...' Since After Forever:) But it has only been since 'reaction video's' that I have learned about all of the vocal techniques etc... The beauty of the voice as an adjunct to music has always captured me, and female vocalists in particular... It is fascinating to understand physics, apply it to human anatomy and then realize the massive undertaking to master the techniques to gain the most from those possibilities and limitations. I suppose it is just like anything, the more you know the more you realize how little you understand... because everything is complicated. Oh how I wish I had studied at least some formal music in my youth. Thanks for sharing!

I just adore this song. Shivers down my spine every time at the end. It represents to me where the band is now. It evolved so much from hesitant but bursting with promise of gorgeous music. And here Nightwish(/Tuomas) is now. Completely at ease with the humongous talent of all these brilliant musicians and capable of expressing whatever inspires. It just blows my mind and I know that this is basically just a small preview of what is to come. There is a reason the Nightwish army always wants reactions to live shows. I simply can not wait to see Floor belt out those last notes. Maybe it will be postponed due to Corona but some day were going to see that performance. And your review of it!😁
