    The phrase "Eternal Earthrise" is significant because the view from the part of the moon where Shoemaker's ashes reside has the Earth rising on the horizon, but due to the fact moon is in tidal lock with the Earth the view never changes. Forever the Earth appears to be rising.
    Think if the Earth wasn't spinning in relation to the sun. At certain places the sun would alwasy look as if it were rising other places it would look like it is always setting, but like being stopped in time the sun just sits in that one spot. So too parts of the moon would have an eternal Earthrise.

    You didn't quite get the Latin bits at the end right. The "Laudato Si" and "Ad Astra" bits at the end meant respectively "Praise be" and "To the stars". But there's a little more to it than just that.
    "Laudato Si" is a phrase taken from St. Francis of Assissi's famous song "The Canticle of the Sun", in which he praises the air, water, fire, sun, planets, animals, etc. as being our brothers and sisters. Death as well. And the most notable line regarding this song was:
    "Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle:
    in celu l'ài formate clarite et pretiose et belle."
    which means:
    "Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
    in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful."
    The term "Ad astra" is used in a variety of places in ancient Latin writings as well as in some modern contexts. Beyond its literal meaning, it implies the accomplishment of something that is practically impossible or very difficult. The first known usage is from Virgil in The Aneid, where he wrote "sic itur ad astra" or "thus one journeys to the stars" with the idea that it is how one accomplishes the impossible, and "opta ardua pennis astra sequi" or "desire to pursue the high (or hard to reach) stars on wings" when Aeneas taunts Turnus in combat. Another origin is Seneca the Younger, who wrote "non est ad astra mollis e terris via" or "there is no easy way from the earth to the stars".
    After the disaster of Apollo 1 in which three astronauts were killed in a flash fire that destroyed their capsule on the launching pad, a memorial was erected with the phrase "ad astra per aspera" which means "to the stars through hardships".

    Okay, I have to be perfectly honest here. I am a huge Nightwish Fan since 1998 and I am always a little sceptical when someone is listening to Nighwish for the very first time (as a european it's hard to understand, that anyone from the rock/metal genre doesn't know Nightwish.) Usually I see a lot of people on youtube, just acting because they figured, Nightwish guarantees a ton of likes. But in your case, it doesn't even matter. I really don't care if it is really your first time listening or if it is just for the likes, because your analysis is always on point and that alone deserves a subscribtion.
    I also really appreciate the fact, that you don't just listen to it because of Floor. Yes Floor is amazing and she is the best thing ever happened to Nightwish. But the entire band is so talented, not even to mention the genius named Tuomas. You are one of the few reactors that really notices the art behind their music and the amazing talent behind it. Thanks for this review! As a science geek, when I found Nightwish a few years ago I was overjoyed. There is no other lyrical music about science to this depth that I know of. Their symphony, "The Greatest Show On Earth" remains as their crowning achievement on this. BTW, the Shakespeare quote, mid-song, refers to the fact that we are all made of starstuff... the heavier elements in our body come from stellar fusion and from cataclysmic stellar events like supernovas. And yes, it was tough to sing, even for Floor... she wasn't satisfied with the studio takes, and re-recorded it at home until she felt that she had it right. The quote from Romeo and Juliet, which was read by Thomas's wife' Johanna, was on a plaque that was on the vessel that took his ashes to the moon.
    Can't wait for the skeleton dance when you get to it.

      The awesome thing was, even after he had been diagnosed, he stayed in the astronaut program to complete the training with his team-mates - despite knowing that they would be going where he could not - so as not to disrupt their training..
      He was originally slated to be the first civilian scientist to go.
      He is the only person ever interred on another celestial body (although a few have been shot blindly into space), and lies near the lunar south pole, in the crater that bears his name.

    Eugene Shoemaker is looking at the stars. But he also watches the earthrise everyday, he can see the earth as one, global, without countries or borders. Earth is our home, of the whole humanity.
    "Laudato si" is also the name of an enzyklika of pope Franziskus from 2015 about "concern for the commonly used house (earth)". It is about the protection of this house against exploitation and enviromental pollution, climate change, water ressources, the loss of biological diversity, degradation of living quality and social descent, global social inequity and the weakness of the reactions. It can not be ruled out, that someone like Tuomas has not thought about this too. The shakespeareian quota is spoken by tuomass wife johanna kurkela. It is engraved on the urn, which contains shoemakers ashes on the moon. johanna, troy and tuomas have founded a band called Auri, their debutalbum came out in 2018. thank you for your efforts and reaction and have a great weekend.

    I saw an interview with Floor where she said that she didn't really nail that final section until after they'd finished all the recording and she was back. When she got the 'tapes' with the choir, she tried it again in her own studio and finally got it. She says that piece took her voice to another level.

    That was a great reaction, again. I loooooove the ending of this song. Floor said they didn't expect such a huge reaction from the fans on this song and that live it's going to a real challenge but I mean... this has to be done live. I think it's going to change the Holy Trinity of Nightwish songs into a Holy Quartet.

  • @ChrisEchoes
    @ChrisEchoes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Great reaction. But one thing no one seems to pick up is how the first sections are structured lyrically. Floor in the beginning seems to be singing about / towards Eugene describing where he rests and what that means and the gentle Troy section (that is him singing, recognise his voice from his solo albums) seems to be the voice of Eugene responding and urging us on to come back to where he is. The whole song is almost a clarion call to inspire us to start exploring the universe as humans again and not leave it to probes and satellites.

    This song...legit...makes me cry every time I hear it. Ugh. It is so beautiful and full of so much emotion. Floor hits those notes at the end and I lose it everytime. Lol. It is of course in honor of Eugene Shoemaker, but the underlying meaning for me is about loss and grief.
    The man male vocalist is Troy and the color and texture in his voice is lovely. It’s amazing to hear him on more tracks. Harvest (the next song) is Troy front and center.
    Have a damn good day!

    • @mnewm21
      @mnewm21 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not such a big fan of Troy as a singer myself. I find his singing very monotonous. I like it in this song and Harvest but I think that is clever writing by Tuomas knowing the limitations of his singers. Marco is on another level in comparison which made it odd that they would use Troy so much on this album. The Hows the Heart "acoustic" is an example that doesn't work for me.

    Not all of us out here have been with Nightwish all that long. I, myself, just began listening about 6 months ago, and I know there are many others that are relatively new. After listening to my first song, "Ghost Love Score", as many I said "where has this group been, or where have I been, I'm 74. Aside from just the listening pleasure, I find it important to learn more about how Tuomas's thinking went into all this. And appreciating the wonderful abilities of all the members. I have no musical training, aside from the volume knob, so your comments are helping me to understand more as I listen over and over to their works of art.

    A couple things I love in this one that you didn't mention (as ever, not a criticism; there's just too much going on for one person to register it all, and you get more in one listen than I or most anybody gets in ten):
    1. I'm a bit of a nerd for time signatures. In the verse (busy vocals alternating with busy instrumentation) it goes as 2 bars of 3 then 2 bars of 4. I can't actually make out if it's 3/4 or 6/8, followed by 4/4, but either way it's interesting.
    2. At the very end, the two different vocal lyrics blend so well together. "Laudato" and "ad astra" share the same vowel focus, and apart from the sibilant "l" and "s", so easy to ignore, they also share the same consonants - the "d" and "t". So they blend magically. I think it's just ingenious writing to pair them.
