My daughter explained Ayreon like this: There is this guy from a middle town in the Netherlands playing multiple instruments, having the qualities of a sound engineer, blessed with lots of fantasy and being a composing genius. But he is modest to shy, doesn't like to be front stage but has gained by his talents and friendly humorous attitude the love of many prog and metal singers and instrumentalists.
There he is, in his studio, he doesn't tour but writes and creates his prog metal opera/musical. And when he's writing, he already thinks of his favourite musicians to play roles and parts. He has the news of something new spreading and friends and colleagues from around the world one after the other come to his studio to record with him and have fun. Others send their tracks by internet for him to engineer.
He feeds bits and morsels via TH-cam to stay in touch and apetize us with the progression.
This has been going on for years and after each production, word spreads and the greatest artists consider it an honour to join!
When an album is issued, there will be gigs but on small scale and near home. With great DVD recording of course and beautiful effects. Fans from all over the world fly in to be there, as will the musicians. Arjen plays his parts, is happy with the rest on and off stage, then returns to his studio and the process starts again.

Arjen Lucassen is another musical genius like Tuomas of Nightwish. He writes all of the music and his 'operas' include prog rock, folk, psychedelic, rock, renaissance etc., etc. As Frankamaria has already said, the official video for The day when the world breaks down will show you what Ayreon's music is all about.
Yes, that song is amazing! And while watching, keep in mind that it's the first song of the album, so 11 singers is a lot, but it's a nice way to introduce all the characters of the story :)
Can we add Peter Tägtgren and Devin Townsend to that list? Those 2 are just as talented but rarely get the credit they deserve. Especially Peter. He is responsible for some of the most influencial black and death metal albums of the previous 2 decades.
Marcela just recently beated cancer. She is also a warrior.
Oh yes. You're so right. And she seems to be a really nice person. Like Floor and Anneke. With every performance you can feel the passion that drives them. And this fact just let me feel good.
On many Ayreon live performances, she's mostly harmonies and backing, but she gives a performance worthy of a lead every time. Never a wrong note, or a wrong attitude.

I've had the pleasure of meeting 5 of them. James LaBrie, Russell Allen (bought him and Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth a beer), Tommy Karivek, Simone and Floor (with After Forever, Re-Vamp and Nightwish) and have seen all but Nils perform live.
It really is a prog and metal dream team.
Even though Floor is my favourite singer, the hero in this one to me is Marcela, as she adapts to the other singers and harmonizes perfectly with their very different voices.

She'd been in bands for years in mexico but she got her break when she entered a contest on Arjen "Ayreon" Lucassens webpage to be on The Human Equation... and basically blasted off like a rocket, and friggin rightfully so.
Marcela's parts on Ayreon: The Human Equation are absolutely incredible.

I can't remember. That was my favourite album for a long time though-the climax in the final song, with almost all of the vocalists throwing in a part, damn... I can't wait!

Ayreon is a treasure chest of excellent musicians and awesome singers. The whole Ayreon Universe show was one of the best shows I‘ve ever attended. Just pick any song of the show. Most people will ask for „The Day that the World breaks down“ but that won’t be live
I love the voice of Anneke, the blond woman in the middle. Highly recommend to check out the song “On most surfaces” of the band The Gathering. The live version of course. Simply mesmerizing progressive rock.
Anneke van Giersbergen is pure genius. Her former band the Gathering made my all time favorite song; Travel. Especially the live TG25 version is just magic.

Floor did say the Anneke was one of the reasons she choose to become a Metal singer, so we all can thank Anneke for that. Ayreon is more of a project than a band. Their shows are usually done to a full album with guest singers playing rolls within the concert. Two great examples of this is The Day That The World Breaks Down with 11 different vocalists and The Eye of Ra. The master mind behind Ayreon is Arjen Anthony Lucassen. I wouldn't call Ayeron a project but more of a magnum opus.
@@forkless Ayreon is a project band created by Arjen Lucassen, in that each concept album has different singers and soloists invited by Arjen to sing or play parts he has written or has roughly in mind to lay on what he has already composed and put together.
A magnum opus by definition is one piece of art, a chef-d'oeuvre by an artist, so it may suit one of his projects, but then I don't know which one is really so much more representative of his works. The Electric Castle or The Human Equation are my favourites but that's a matter of taste.
@@ronthal It's just a matter of how you look at it. You could look at the albums individually or as collected work that plays out in the Ayeron "universe" (quoted because I am not referring to the album).
We can all thank Anneke for being one of the greatest singers ever and opening a niche that turned out to be so wonderful and varied.

I feel like I'm somewhat qualified to add my 2ct:
_Ayreon_ is the project of Arjen Lucassen, dutch composer and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire. He writes the music, plays a lot of the instruments (keys, bass, guitars) and then hires the cream of the crop of Rock/Metal musicians and singers to contribute the rest. If you want a personal recommendation of mine, check out a live version of _"And the druids turned to stone"_ featuring the excellent Damian Wilson on vocals. He really shines.
Now, as for _Anneke van Giersbergen,_ she's the godmother of female metal singers (well, there's _Doro Pesch,_ too) and she started out in Dutch band _"the Gathering"._
She has a wonderful voice and a personality to match, and she's a guest singer for many many bands.
If you want more of her, which I highly recommend because she deserves more recognition, I would suggest the songs _"In Motion" , "Travel" , "Amity"_ by her old band _the Gathering._ Good live versions of those songs are easy to find on youtube.
As I said, Anneke is highly recommended, as she blazed the trail for Floor&co.
"And the Druids turned to stone" is excellent. Damian is such an underrated singer and such a nice guy. I went to concert where he jumped off stage at the end of the show, ran to the entry of the club and thanked everybody personally for coming to the show. Shook everyone's hand and had a nice word for everyone. Really incredible guy.

"The day that the world breaks down" is another song you should have a look at.
It's from their 2017 album "The Source" and includes all 11 singers "used" on the album. (Including Floor again)

The Source might not be fascinating from beginning to end (of CD2) but it has the most fantastic cast of Prog metal singers ever... And I've seen all of them sing live with their bands, except the 10001101101 guy.

They're all so good at controlling their pitch and volume to achieve that perfect blend of voices. I'm no singer, but I know that's a lot harder than they make it look!
Some of Ayreon productions have 11 or so main singers. Floor's sister Irene is one of the regular backing singers too. Songs like "The day that the world breaks down" are classics of reactor channels and "Everybody dies" is an example of quite a theatrical rock opera style. The composer bases his productions on Sci-fi, such as Stargate.
This project is all about people making something beautiful. Each and everyone knows what it is to put the band before their own ego's and that's how you get something as wonderful as this. It gets me every time. Ofcourse, anything with Floor does. But also Anneke has a voice that can move me. I could listen to her for hours.

Hi Christie, nice reaction video, Ayreon is a Dutch band and more of an project based band so to say, they have all sorts of (metal) singers from other bands doing these "projects" with them, in this case it's Floor, Anneke van Giersbergen (started with the Gathering mid 90's) and Marcela Bovio (Red haired) who is the singer for MaYan.
But Ayreon has all these fun things certainly worthwhile to explore a bit :)

This was just so so so beautiful! My eyebrows are still on the ceiling from seeing Floor (I don't know why it was so unexpected, but it was a delightful kind of surprise), and from discovering ... through you and the lovely people who recommended this to you ... another band that I now want to go and listen to! Here's to expanding horizons and good music. The harmonies! Wow. And, great point about the balance and pacing and volume needed when singing together this way. The musicians, too, just exquisite. Especially liked how the music picked up and continued their voices. Divine.

Check out her work with her former band Stream of Passion, especially the live from the concert Memento, songs like This Endless Night, Broken, When You Hurt Me The Most, Street Spirit really showcase her talent! I'm pretty sure that you have reacted to Anneke Van Giersbergen before. She's best known for the legendary Dutch Progressive rock band The Gathering. I recommend you react to "The Gathering - Travel - TG25: Live @ Doornroosje". The Gathering is a VERY deep rabbit hole to descend into.

Christi if you like to see more "Jansen". Check out The Eye of Ra from the same concert. You can see Floor with her sister Irene sing together. The End is really nice when all the vocalists and musicians appear on stage.

Floors sister Irene also sings with Ayreon, not in this one though, the blonde is Anneke Van Giersbergen and the other singer is Marcela Bovio all with great voices. Ayreon is a fantastic concept. They do heavy stuff but also this type of track.

Arjen the mastermind behind Ayreon is a guitarist who has stage fright. He does play occasionally, but always hires top notch musicians to perform and record his compositions. Anneke used to sing for a band called "The Gathering" from years ago. Floor was inspired to become a metal singer when she heard Anneke. The most amazing thing about Arjen's projects is that he uses some of the greatest vocalists in rock music today. Many times several in the same song. He also does music that falls into the category of operettas or musicals. Beautiful job again Christy! Floor pops up in many guest singing roles for Arjen and others. Peace!

As others have said, “The Day The World Breaks Down” is a great introduction to the concept of Ayreon. Each album is like its own musical, with multiple guest singers each performing the role of a specific character. Furthermore, each Ayreon album is connected to a larger, deeper overarching story and lore. The track I mentioned the opener to the album “The Source” released in 2017. IIRC, the first Ayreon album was released way back in like 1996. The song you just reacted to was on the album Into the Electric Castle, which is great. Happy listening!
Ayreon is the project of Dutch composer, producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen. He has had over 75 different singers on his now 8 (double) albums (9th coming this sept).
You should check out Ayreon's newest lead and another Anneke-inspired vocalist - Cammie Gilbert of Oceans of Slumber. Great singer with a beautify and very distinctively soulful tone, especially for the metal scene. Try their cover of Strange Fruit or Solitude, or an original like Winter...they are remarkable!

I have always loved Anneke's voice. She was great in The Gathering back in the day, and her material since then is great as well. She has a few awesome duets with Devin Townsend on TH-cam! You might have to wait for that album! Arjen Lucassen is the genius behind Ayreon, he works with so many guest singers and uses them is novel and amazing ways. The Day that the World Breaks Down has 11 vocalists as well as a number of top musicians including Arjen himself. Ayreon is more concept and production than a band and those playing and singing play parts in a production. Anneke was the inspiration for many of the ladies in Metal in the Netherlands. Floor and Simone being two who she influenced. Marcela is from Mexica but has worked in the Netherlands for some time, she is in a band called MaYan (spelling?) and is one of three singers who do a lot of backing for Ayeon together with Irene Jansen (Floor's sister)

"The day that the world breaks down" is a proper prog metal song, and the official video is quite interesting cause Arjen (the mastermind behind Ayreon) included some subtitles talking a bit about the recording process, the guest musicians and the concept of the album.
Also many songs from this same live recording, such as "Star of Sirrah" and "The castle hall" really really worth listening to.
Ayreon is a little like the Alan Parson's project. Marko from Nightwish is also a regular guest and even Floor's sister Irene.
Can't wait to see Anneke 12 sep live in a big church on her tour: Anneke goes to church.
And I'm still waiting if the end of november Nightwish shows still can take place. Luckaly I did see Floor on here solo tour just before Corona broke out.

Anneke is known by many as the biggest influencer in terms of symphonic/melodic/atmospheric metal, starting back in the early 90’s. Almost all in this genre mention her name as one of their biggest inspirations. ‘Strange machines’, ‘in motion’ and ‘travel’ are ones I would recommend! Floor Jansens first band After forever is something I’m sure you would enjoy. Anything from them is great but I would recommend ‘monolith of doubt’, ‘dreamflight’, ‘discord’, ‘who I am’ or ‘’face your demons’ 😄
The lady on the right is Marcela Bovio. Look up the group Streams of Passion . She has a superb voice.
