All of NW's lyrics are complex as you well know! :) But this song especially is deeper than any others. Cornelius supplied the actual lyrics below, and a while back I put together a little glossary that explains some of the technical terms he uses that may not be commonly known in general knowledge. Hope this can help support Cornelius's lyrics... Archean horizons - A term from geology referring to the rocks of the Archeozoic Period of the PreCambrian Era. The spoken-word portions are narrations by Professor Richard Dawkins, evolutionary biologist from Oxford University. He held the Oxford Chair for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 to 2008. The excerpts are from his book. At the Wembley performance, he appeared on stage with Nightwish to speak the narrations. Pristine Gaia - Gaia was the ancient Greek goddess of the Earth, now often used to refer to the primordial ecosystem when all the continents were joined. Opus perfectum - Obviously Latin for "a perfect composition" or creation. Goldilocks Zone - A semi-formal term used by astrophysicists to describe the stable orbital zones around any star which are "not too hot, not too cold, but juuuust right" for the existence of liquid water, based on their diameter, heat and luminosity output, and radiation field. Obviously this refers to the region where a planet's environment is suitable for the development of life. LUCA - LUCA is an acronym for a formal term used by evolutionary biologists that stands for "Last Universal Common Ancestor." It is the most recent population group of organisms which shared common ancestry with every currently surviving species on Earth. Devonian - A geology term pertaining to the portion of the Paleozoic Era dominated by ocean fish, prior to the advent of amphibians and reptiles. Aeons - Aeons is just a fancy, ancient spelling of "eons," vast periods of time. Ion channels - A term used in biology and medicine to refer to the osmotic pressure balance maintained across cell walls by the relative concentrations of various metal ions in aqueous solution, usually sodium and potassium. The opening or closing of transport pathways through the cell walls for certain molecules, mediated by the ion balance, are called "ion channels." Thus, the "magic" of life is permitted to exist because the exquisite balancing of ion concentrations on each side of the membrane either open the channel and allow entry of molecules necessary for life or close the channel to exclude other molecules. Little Lucy of the Afars - Refers to the fossil remnants of the female dubbed "Lucy," found in the region of Africa that was known, in ancient times, as "The Territory of Isis and Afars" (nothing to do with the modern day meaning of that term "Isis") now roughly corresponding to the countries of Somalia and Djibouti. Lucy is believed to be the single known example of the common humanoid ancestor that spawned homo sapiens, Neanderthals, and Cro Magnons. ...And the Geico Caveman. LOL Ionia - Ancient Greece, often credited as the birthplace of modern scientific thought, logic, and learning. So, when Marco sings, "Enter Ionia" it is not saying that some person "enters" the City-State of Ionia. Rather, it is introducing the scene in the Greatest Show where the City-State of Ionia itself "enters" the world stage of history.
I knew a truck driver who had been driving around for 35 years. He ran 99.9% of his career flawlessly and only 0.1% did not go as it should and he did some damage. that does not mean that he was a bad driver, after all, he had already driven 4 million miles. having a bad day is normal for us humans. thank you for reacting positively and with pleasure to something that we all enjoy.
Yes, the song celebrates all life through all eons. They end the song with "We were here" suggest we are just lucky. The greatest show on earth will continue with or without humankind
Tuomas has the whole record in his mind when he composes, not just a song. There are some videos about the recording process of "Endless forms more beautiful", he basically "hears" all the instruments and vocal parts in his head, like a painter sees a finished picture. Then he makes some basic demo versions to share with the rest of the band and they start rehearsing. If a member of the band suggests a better idea or something doesn't actually sound as he imagined he has no problem about changing the songs, he's the genius behind the music but they work as a band.
I’m so obsessed with this song. I have the studio version, multiple live versions, and even the videos of the live versions on my phone. This is a song that will always be a masterpiece no matter what generation listens to it
As a mathematician with a deep love of music theory: yes it totally makes sense. Tuomas has an astounding understanding of sound and music. I think great composers understand how a performance plays out in the minds of listeners. They're not orchestrating a band or a show for us, those are just the tools they use. They are conducting us.
I think it's not about their Greatest Show on Earth but the show we all are a part, life it self, all the living things we see around us, that's the Greatest Show on Earth. From the big bang (?) upto today 🤗 All the best 👍
Yeah, it ends with mentions of a mushroom cloud, and the "We were Here" line is that trope about leaving your mark on something long after you're gone.
just to point out, although you probably already know... the "we were here" with the crowd chanting together, is not about being on that show... but about humanity being a part of the greatest show on Earth and leaving it's mark on the universe, even if we come to someday disappear. "Man, he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day'll cease to be Greet the last light of the library We were here! We were here! We were here! We were here! "We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born The potential people who could have been here in my place But who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA So massively exceeds the set of actual people In the teeth of those stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds How dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state From which the vast majority have never stirred?" There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers Having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one And that whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity From so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been And are being, evolved"
I would be interested in seeing your reaction to "Dead Boy's Poem" by Nightwish live at buenos aires. It's a more acoustic sound and Floor is amazing, which really goes without saying at this point I guess.
In front of Tuomas's keyboards is the Groot (Marvel character). And yes, he is a genius. You're not the first and not the last who says that. Already in 2012 after Imaginaerum album release Iron Maiden's song writer and bassist, Steve Harris, said that "Tuomas is a f****ng genius!". And after that Tuomas wrote the album where was this 21 minute masterpiece about the birth of a universe, the birth of life on Earth and a human evolution - the Greatest Show On Earth! Here's the entire lyrics of the song, if you missed those spoken words - well, wisdoms, I would say by professor Richard Hawkins. *I. Four Point Six* Archaean horizon The first sunrise On a pristine Gaea Opus perfectum Somewhere there us sleeping [Spoken] "After sleeping through a hundred million centuries We have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet Sparkling with color, bountiful with life Within decades we must close our eyes again Isn't it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief Time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe And how we have come to wake up in it?" *II. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here. We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?" "There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one. And that whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved." *V. Sea-Worn Driftwood* [Instrumental]
Great song to check out for Marco displaying his voice and talent is from the same Tampere concert: "The Islander". The narration during the Greatest show is Richard Dawkins, English ethologist, evolutionary biologist, and author., he appears on stage with them on other shows. This song is based on his writings and is about the formation of the Solar System and the creation of the earth itself, and the introduction of life, (the growling of early man, etc)
Great reaction as always Christi! The narration at the end is by Prof Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist, and it's taken from his book "Unweaving The Rainbow". He actually appeared on stage with Nightwish when they performed this at Wembley, London in 2015. It's a pretty deep statement and goes as follows: "We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?"
Tuomas is an absolute genius as a composer and lyricist. I seriously seriously believe he will go down as one of this generation's greatest composers. This song and performance, about creation, is one of the most epic, most amazing pieces that they've done. This song and performance absolutely highlights that moment for all the band when talent and passion effortlessly comes together. I have had a pure love for Nightwish from the very beginning and am proud to say that this is one of the many bands and types of music that I've introduced my kids to. ;-P
Christi, this piece could be considered Tuomas' view of the evolution of the Earth and Humankind's place on it. There are elements of Professor Richard Dawkins and Charles Darwin's musings, both renowned biologists. The 'figure' on the front of Tuomas' keyboard may represent Humankind strapped to the evolutionary process,(just my thoughts). The narrator is indeed Richard Dawkins, and when they performed this at Wembley in 2015,Dawkins read the last passage on stage with the band and took the curtain call with the band. Tuomas is indeed an exceptional composer and I can hardly wait to see what he has in store in 2020 with the new album release. If Floor's excitement is any guide,it will be well worth the wait. May I suggest you react to Dead Boy's Poem live from Buenos Airies.Just when you think you have heard it all from Floor, she re-interprets one of their early songs in a way that takes it to another level. Thank you for your reactions, the warmth and positivity you exude is wonderful. 😊😊
yeah i'm a big fan of Nightwish but that "theory" is not strong and get refuted easly because of the cause/effect that science is based on you will end up in an infinity of them
they are stupid good...I'm an 80s kid, grew up with bands like flock of seagulls, the call, Erasure...just got tuned into Nightwish and they do scratch that metal itch, but what is most impressive is the complete package. This 45 yr old is a fan now.
I think the herd of deer running by fit most well to this song about the beauty of life in its diversity! Consider your experience further enhanced by their appearance, and thank you for the react! Nightwish is due to release a new album this April, initial reviews describe it as even more grandiose than the album with Greatest Show on Earth, it should be interesting material to react to, once its out. Peace!
It's ironic how relatively unknown Floor Jansen was in the Netherlands before she participated on Beste Zangers on television here. How Nightwish has eluded me for all these years is a complete mystery, but I'm ecstatic that I discovered them. I've been binge watching their concerts the last couple of months now in a slightly obsessive manner -- as if there is any other way. They all are insanely talented musicians and there aren't enough superlatives for Floor's singing capabilities and stage presence to me Marko Hietala was the most fun discovery. From his solo performances to the backing vocals and duets -- their voices go so well together -- this year' rendition of Ave Maria at Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) is one of the most awesome versions I've ever heard/see. th-cam.com/video/ut6ufu2CPNg/w-d-xo.html
@Ad Lockhorst , in general ...metal isn~t that accepted in our little country...... mainstream is rap, hip hop, R&B , dance music...... hard rock, metal, or songs longer than 4 minutes seem to be unbearable for the radio...... good to have you tube and no narrow mind........ there`s enough good music to explore outside radio stations in the Netherlands.
There's so many people and that big production because it was their 20 anniversary show. Since you didn't have time to do some research about the song, here's a little bit for you :) The greatest show on Earth refers of course to life itself. The song tells the story of Life at different levels, that's why you see water, fire, animals and people in the background. The main theory is that the first instrumental part represents the great void before the Big Bang (the fireworks!), and then the formation of the planets. Part 2, starting with Floor's operatic high notes, tells the story of Earth and the creation of life, highlighting the beauty of it all. Part 3, which is the one starting with those ethereal notes from Floor and those grunts, is probably the most interesting part of the song, at least in terms of music and composition. That part 3 is called The Toolmaker, referring to the human being. In just a few minutes, the music, the lyrics, and in this case the background imagery too, are telling the story of humanity, from the Neanderthal-like growls of Marco, to the rise of cultures and civilizations, and to how modern man succumbed to greed, power, hate, wars (giant mushroom clouds = atomic bombs), "ratkind". And after that, the chorus brings some hope by talking about the good things of the human being and encouraging us to learn and discover, to "greet the last light of the library". But, even more interestingly, Tuomas uses the instrumental section between the two choruses (mins 14 to 15 approx) to tell the story of music evolution: hidden behind the keyboard melody and the riffs, you can hear short fragments of different types of music throughout History: from tribal instruments to Gregorian to medieval to Bach to Metallica and lastly to electronic, all that in under a minute, and without losing the conducting melody or the sensation of being in the same song. If that's not called true artistry, I don't know what is :D
Mario Sanz I have to correct you a little. The first part is labeled ”Four Point Six” which means it is only the development of earth, 4,6 billion years old, the Big Bang would be much much more than that.
@@mantailuaa Oh wow, I know the lyrics by heart and for some reason I never paid attention to the name of part one... Yeah that makes a lot of sense then, maybe the intro is the formation of the Earth too, and those fireworks are the very moment when life started. Good to always get some more clues about tuomas's lyrcs, thanks for the tip!
@@TheVoiceLoveCo You were saying something about Tuomas being a genius composer? I think in a couple hundred years, if humanity still exists and has any semblance of culture, Tuomas might be held in the same respect as the great classical composers. It seems like making music and telling a story through it, manipulating the listener's emotions while introducing his message, often subliminally is second nature to him (scratch that, first nature in fact, the man was born to do this).
@@MarioSanzVidal I have been imagining Floor's almost sighing note at 4:23 as the beginning of life. "The breath of life" is an expression used sometimes about the start of life, isn't it?
I think the tribal growl was from Floor because she can do that too. I read somewhere that there were 26 thousand fans in that Tampere concert, including Floor's parents.
This was the first time I’ve actually noticed (the audio quality on this reaction must be better or something), but I’m about 90% certain that it’s BOTH Marko and Floor doing the tribal grunting. If you listen carefully, you can actually hear a subtlety higher overtone slightly out of phase with the base tone. I’ve always heard it before as a single voice and couldn’t really tell who was doing it (they both appear to be on or near their mikes in the video) but figured it was Marko since it’s obviously him on the longer lower growls.
@@calibadgerdude6082 After checking versions in Bloodstock 2018 and Buenos Aires 2018 (the bluray concert), I can say that all three (Floor, Marko and Troy) were providing sounds to their mics in the growling part. Bloodstock recording clearly shows Floor and Marko but the BA2018 has Troy growling too.
One thing you might not be aware of is that Metal music is today's Classical Music. If Bach, Beethoven, or Mozart were alive today, they would be making metal music. Toumas could be considered the Mozart of today. You will find that many metalheads have a great appreciation of Classical Music for its complexities, because it translates well into so many metal compositions. There's even a metal sub genre named NeoClassical Metal.
I'm a huge fan of Nightwish & Floor Jansen for almost 20 years now. And it's so wonderful that their music can fascinate and emotionally enthrall other people just as much as I do. Regardless of which music you have heard and liked so far. I really love your reactions. Thank you ❤️
Hello Christi, first of all welcome to the complete setup of Nightwish - as far as I know this was the first piece of music of Nightwish in the complete line-up to which you made a reaction. The missing member is Troy Donockley, the multi-instrumentalist. He plays pretty much every kind of flute, the Uilleann Pipes, guitars and lots of other instruments. That's why I wasn't surprised that you didn't really realize that it wasn't a duet of Marko and Floor but mostly a trio, because Troy was also involved. The camera work was a bit confusing here, too, because Troy didn't get any attention at all - what a pity. Nightwish is an extraordinary group in this line-up, which not only stands out due to its extraordinary musical mastery, but has also grown together in friendship. You can see this very well at the gigs - there is always a smile in the eyes and also little attentions between the participants, a nudge here or a high five - just a "horny band" and it is always fun to watch and listen to them at "work". Their complete concerts are emotional rollercoasters and I wish I could have a look at one of them - let's see, on the next tour... Please note the following dates - in February probably the new video and in April probably the new CD -- these are the rumors that are currently circulating. Officially the mastering was finished yesterday - so it's going forward
Great reaction and appreciation of the musicianship and talents of all the members of Nightwish. I couldn't agree more on your compliments for each of them. Thank You.
The new single will be out next Month! ❤️ The last album is 5 years and we miss the new stuff! They will release the name of the new album and more infos already this month! When the single is out, please react to it! The tour starts in april, so keep checking the dates and go watch them
I love you because you can tell what is happening technically without sounding like a schoolbook. And also you can express emotion that is believable because you have a way with words and the sound of your voice that sounds true. And also you pay attention to the little details in the music. Love that you love Nightwish. Just joined the army myself this year.
Christy, please do a reaction to my new favorite Nightwish song! "Dead Boys Poem" live from the new Blu-ray Decades from Buenos Aires. Emotional and powerful. I think you will appreciate it. The lyrics involve everything that Tuomas would like to have said to the people he loved if he were to pass unexpectedly.
It is a gift, being able to see music in the mind before committing it to paper. Mozart, Beethoven, Brian Wilson, Bernie Taupin to name a few just have that as their gift - Tuomas certainly belongs.
Also his solo stuff. Stones is great. As a side note we are a few days from Marko's birthday. He will turn 54 on the 14th. My a few months younger bald head is envious of his long locks! I turn 54 come June.
Lol, I noticed the same thing. It's about the same as when Floor says before "Last ride of the day" in Wacken 2013, "with audience like you guys, what more can we wish for" 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheVoiceLoveCo well, watching your glee saying it, I'm sure *nobody* failed to get what you *wanted* to say. Heck, your enthousiasm lights up my screen even with the sound off... 😎
When i watched this live version for the first i had no idea who Nightwish were, but i thought this sounds awesome. Then i read the lyrics and watched it again, it was a whole new journey. This has got to be one of the best pieces of music ever made.
Thank you once again for your beautiful and insightful reaction to the genius of Nightwish! Now that you've done the "holy trinity", I really hope you will continue to react and listen to them, I see what a great fan you've become of them, and if I can make some suggestion I recommen you react to "storytime" and "ever dream" from the 2013 Wacken concert, and "dead boy's poem" from their latest dvd concert Decades live in Buenos Aires... And another thing that I love and share with you is your admiration for Tuomas; you've talked about his musical genius and, trust me, his lyrics ability are extraordinary too... always read his lyrics after or before listening to one of his songs, they are pure poetry... Anyway, once again thank you for your wonderful reactions and passsion for music and Nightwish, I WILL keep watching!
YT is getting nuts and some folks can't hash it enough to stop them from pulling the videos, these days. and it seem totally random. One person can have an uninterrupted play-through and someone else can't have more than a few moments of the sound before it gets yanked.
I thank you for extending me grace. I did view the entire song and did make the cuts necessary to stay compliant with TH-cam's copyright rules BUT my camera also proved to be a real pill and cut out in parts due to overheating. 😭 All in all, I'm grateful that this one is done even with its GLARING mistakes. Oy. Thanks again.
@@jpkalishek4586 Oh, you saw Elvann's reaction too? The underlying problem is that TH-cam doesn't punish trolls for false copyright claims but threatens creators for deleting their channel after three copyright strikes.
@@jpkalishek4586 It seems that the risk of videos being pulled also depends on the artist. While I don't know the exact mechanics, major labels seem to be more eager or effective to suppress anything that may be a copyright violation of their content. Nuclear Blast, the label Nightwish are on, seem to be a bit more relaxed. There are lots of Nightwish videos on TH-cam, and I rarely (never?) see one disappear for copyright reasons. Also, uploads with music from indie bands fly under the radar, so to speak.
Hi ma'am I would recommend you to hear this song from the album directly, with your headphones, lights out, eyes closed, you will understand everything and hear everything. First time I listened to it when I bought the album in 2015 it was like that, Nightwish gives those kinds of experiences. It's amazing.
Brazilians thank you very much for your videos have subtitles, great work, love your analysis and the way you behave while listening to music ... amazing
Great reacción Christi, nightwish is amazing and the shows are perfects, from the lights, pirotécnic, the sound of each instrument, the powerful, melodic, heavenly, voice of Floor, the lyrics The fans, wow!
To give a basic rundown of what the song is about, it is based on the essay "Endless Forms Most Beautiful," by Richard Dawkins. The message is two-fold. First, at its most basic, it is the story of the birth and life and evolution of the universe and life on earth. The beginning represents the big bang (the fireworks, etc.). Then the formation of the seas and the most basic life forms (the Divonian Sea, which was the primordial sea before land came about). The part where Marco is grunting in a tribal fashion is basically the volcanic age, and the introduction of land animals, including humans. That gives way to modern humanity, and how we've impacted the earth. The second point of the song, which is incapsulated by the repeated words "We Were Here," and the narration by Dr. Dawkins at the end, is to not regret the shortness of our lives, but to revel in the very fact that we got the chance to live at all. As the narration states (and I may be paraphrasing this a bit): "We will all die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people will never die, because they will never be born. The number of potential people who could be standing here in my place outnumber the sands of Sahara. Surely such unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton … the number of potential people allowed by our DNA far exceeds the number of actual people. We lucky few who won the lottery of life, how dare we complain about our inevitable return to that prior state from which most never stir!" So the overarching message is, "Love and appreciate every second of your life, because you are one of the lucky few for whom all the necessary elements came together to create the miracle of life in the first place, and revel in the fact that you were here to make an impact!" That's the story of the song.
I did not know Floor Jansen and I'm dutch. Came to her from the "Beste Zangers" show. Then I watched her in Nightwish and I fell in love. I've been playing Nightwish and Nightwish reaction videos now for days and night, barely getting my sleep. What is that?!
Currently binge-watching Lost in Space on Netflix. It's very good, enthralling and hard to look away. Nonetheless for a reaction to The Greatest Show on Earth, that shiz is getting paused and here I am.
Did you notice how after minute 17 in a short sequence they go through the entire history of music? First in the quiet piano part the medieval Dies Irae theme is quoted, then when the full band comes back there's the theme from Bach's d minor fugue, and in a few bars there's the main riff from Metallica's Enter Sandman.
Floor mentioned a few times in interviews that she sees her fellow Nightwish members not even as friends, but as her brothers. In that way Marco and Floor are indeed a kind of siblings ;)
I find it absolutely hilarious that the deer thing happened at the exact moment in the song that talks about the origins of life itself. XD. Talk about spectacular timing!
Two other options to check out since you like Floor and Marco singing together are two songs from the Wembley show: Seven Days to the Wolves (Very strong, clear vocals from both of them) and Yours is an Empty Hope (A whole different aspect to Floor's range).
I've seen so many people react to Nightwish already and, honestly, your videos definitely stand out. The way you seem to "feel" and appreciate the music, as well as your comments from a professional point of view and your warm personality are what makes your reactions especially fun to watch. Btw Tuomas has a solo album that is really awesome. I'd highly recommend that you check out the song "The Last Sled" (sung by his wife, which is also really cool) if you haven't heard of the album yet.
As a parent that would be an incredible moment! You should be so very proud of Floor! And your country is beautiful. I loved it when I visited there. 😍
Wow. What a show! The whole nine yards and then some! My brain is not a fan of flashing lights, but the audio is worth a moment of looking away here and there when they go into the light blasting. Fantastic performance, the lot of it. The drummer!!! The different unique instruments. The duets. Amazing. And her voice is that of a chameleon. She is just unbelievable in her ability to use it however she wants. Case in point, I don't know how she is not out of breath after the 'twirly-twirly' ... (and yeah, I was wondering same about her in ear monitors ...).
I feel so lucky that i had the privilege to discover Nightwish before 2000 when they released their first album and also watched them live in various shows. NICE DONE !!!
How appropriate that nature is distracting you! This song is all about the Evolution of the universe, the Earth, and life itself. The keyboard stand does look like a wooden figure crucified. Some people think it may represent our environment being sacrificed for our pleasure. Or it may be Groot, a superhero character from "Guardians of the Galaxy". He is a living tree. This was the final song of a 2 hour concert. We like to call Floor's twrirly thing a "Windmill". Especially since it gives it a Dutch connection. Great reaction video Christy. Tuomas is a genius! Can you imagine presenting this song to these incredible musicians? "Listen Floor and you guys", "check out this idea". "I have written a little song covering 4.6 billion years of the evolution of the universe, Earth, and life itself." "Oh yeah, it is about 20 minutes long". "What do you think?" What a grand concept for a song! We are one We are a universe Forbears of what will be Scions of the Devonian sea Aeons pass Writing the tale of us all A day-to-day new opening For the greatest show on Earth Man, he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day’ll cease to be Greet the last light of the library We were here! It is stunning to think about. I love this comment so very much and thank you for leaving it. It refreshes me as I'm feeling a bit diminished over the quality of this one on MY end. Nightwish shines. Period. And I'm undone once again by their beauty. Wow!😘
This it's definitely their greatest masterpiece so far. The songs it's about life and evolution from a biological point of view, "The Greatest Show On Earth" its Life. And actually the whole album ("Endless Forms Most Beautiful") from which this song is, it's mostly about this ideas. And the person you hear reciting at the end it's Richard Dawkins, so, I quote this to explain a little: "The song title is taken from a 2009 book by evolutionary biologist and atheist writer Richard Dawkins, concerning the evidence for biological evolution. Dawkins also contributes towards the album. Holopainen (Tuomas) explained to HMV in March 2015: "I wrote him a letter a bit more than a year ago and explained the ideas we had for this album, mainly to do with evolution. Since one of the tracks would be named directly after one of his books, it felt like a perfect match to try to get him do some reciting on the album. He sent me an email a few weeks later accepting the invitation." " "Later in 2014 we then recorded his parts at Hats Off Studios, Oxford. This is a huge honor for us, since Dawkins is one of our biggest heroes and his writings have been huge inspiration for the album." By the way, I Love your videos!
You are too kind. This is definitely not my best work, though NIGHTWISH shines in the midst of my bumbling. I am so happy to read this quote and thank you for taking the time to educate me further on this amazing masterpiece. The more I learn about Tuomas, the more I am a fan. Wow. 😍
@@TheVoiceLoveCo You are very welcome. I enjoy your videos, so thank you. And yes, as a compositor, Tuomas it's arguably the most outstanding in the present time, as far as metal music concerns.
loved your reaction to this its a shame you couldnt hear the narration very well as it really helps to frame the song itself - they are quotes read and written by Sir Richard Dawkins who even appeared on stage with them to do it live in Wembley. The quotes help to explain the underlying theme of evolution in the song, "the greatest Show on Earth" being life itself
Have you noticed Bach refferences at 17:40 Minuet in G Major and then at 17:47 Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Tuomas is indeed a genius and I loved your comparison when you called him a mathematical musician cause you can see her respects Bach who was called the same name too! Great reaction as always :)
I saw this posted the other day by someone. Floor and her husband, Sabaton drummer Hannes van Dahl have a young daughter Freja. Freja's first day at day care: Teacher: " Freja what does your Mommy do?" Freja; "She is a Meral Goddess"
Unlike the outrageous ticket prices being charged for concerts these days, whatever the cost of a ticket is to their show, you’ll truly get every dollar’s worth. Combine the music with the theatrics, it is definitely worth every penny. Ive paid $150 for a few shows over the years that were crap musically with very vanilla theatrics. A Nightwish show is something to remember for a lifetime.
I paid £32 for my ticket to Wembley 2016... around £50 for the upcoming one in Wembley this year. Back in the day, I'd paid €28 for their End of an Era show in my home city. Probably the best value for money live shows by a large margin.
I must not have watched this before. Being distracted by the mating ritual of wildlife while listening to this beautiful song about the evolution and flow of life on our planet could not be more fortuitous! How Very Cool! I envy your windows!
The "twirly-twirly thigy" is called a Windmill moevment, or just simply windmill. And yes, Tuomas is really like a mathematician, carefully planning things out all throughout scores. Best example is The Poet and the Pendulum, where a spoken line is "now I only have 3 minutes and counting", which is precisely 3 minutes away from the final strike of the pendulum in that section.
The pyrothechnics and and all this stuff are for explain parts of the song. Example at the beginning, firework show the Big Bang that create our world. After, with the big show of flash it show the processus of formation of the Earth full of thunderstorms.. All the littles details are there for a reason. If you go on the website of Nightwish, you can see a bit of how they produce their stuff. Very interesting
15:50 Nope, that prehistoric grunting was being performed by Floor. I can't remember which song it is, but Floor actually does deep growl vocals *underneath* Marco while he's singing. Takes a bit to spot it 'cause it's so unexpected!
You nailed it with your comment about Tuomas. He is one of the greatest composers in the world now. I buy all the records they make and i don't have to wonder if its good or not. There is not many people in the world like Tuomas. it's like a massage to your brain every time you here them and this song is just what name says, not less not more just the greatest show on earth. It's hard to listen anything else after this song. It's kind of long by the minute but when you start to here you notice soon that hey...why it already stopped. i could listen this till i am dead lke a stone. How the hell i can wait the next record comind 10.04. Mark the day my fellow NW fans. I Think we can soon wait something new songs from the new record so stay alert my friends and keep on rockin'.
I love nightwish but i used to avoid this song because of it's duration, but now that I've watched this holy fucking hell this is really the greatest show on earth
Oh, and all of them wear ear pieces for the tic track. Tuomas always has the back track by the London Philharmonic to deal with, and to keep time they all need to hear it at least. Especially Kai and before him Jukka. The drummer really needs to be on their game when a band needs to do that, so if your piece falls out or stops working you got him to track to. I know Marko has joked about his ears just getting security pulling crowd surfers off the edge. They are certainly well fit for the head banging and Floor's "Windmills" I think someone mentioned it for that reaction, but Tuomas has Floor's vocals in Poet removed from his feed because of the emotions she generates. He's gotten better, but the Mother And Father portion, especially, was too much for him.
Hiya. The twirly-twirly hair thing is called The Windmill and I had to smile at your early slip of the tongue, as the fireworks were going off at the beginning, when you said "...they never fail to disappoint." LOL. All the best to you.
Watched it again and since you like Marco singing...The song "While your lips are still red" at Wembley 2015. Here he sings and Floor does backing later in the song.
This is Nightwish at it's best, all are equal on stage and add to the show... Can't really replace anyone to mess up with the chemistry of this band, Jukka made the perfect choice for his descendant btw..
THANK YOU, my fellow Nightwish/Floor jansen fan ❤❤❤ Tuomas is a Master Composer like in the old days 👀🎶👍 The Greatest show on earth is Life and therefor Evolution

Archaean horizon
The first sunrise
On a pristine gaea
Opus perfectum
Somewhere there, us sleeping
After sleeping through a hundred million centuries
We have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with color, bountiful with life
Within decades we must close our eyes again
Isn't it a noble and enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun
To work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it?
The cosmic law of gravity
Pulled the newborns around a fire
A careless cold infinity in every vast direction
Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone
She has a tale to tell
From the stellar nursery into a carbon feast
Enter LUCA
The tapestry of chemistry
There's a writing in the garden
Leading us to the mother of all
We are one
We are a universe
Forebears of what will be
Scions of the Devonian sea
Aeons pass
Writing the tale of us all
A day-to-day new opening
For the greatest show on Earth
Ion channels welcoming the outside world
To the stuff of stars
Bedding the tree of a biological holy
Enter life

After a billion years The show is still here
Not a single one of your fathers died young
The handy travelers out of Africa
Little Lucy of the Afar
Gave birth to fantasy
To idolatry
To self-destructive weaponry
Enter the God of gaps
Deep within the past
Atavistic dread of the hunted
Enter Ionia, the cradle of thought

We were here!
We were here!
We were here!
We were here!
"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones
Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born
The potential people who could have been here in my place
But who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara
Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton
We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA
So massively exceeds the set of actual people
In the teeth of those stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here
We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds
How dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state
From which the vast majority have never stirred?"
There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers
Having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one
And that whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity
From so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been
And are being, evolved
By the way, Floor works out big time and she is a vegetarian.
LOL
Ionia - Ancient Greece, often credited as the birthplace of modern scientific thought, logic, and learning. So, when Marco sings, "Enter Ionia" it is not saying that some person "enters" the City-State of Ionia. Rather, it is introducing the scene in the Greatest Show where the City-State of Ionia itself "enters" the world stage of history.
@@terrytheukdude9402Thanks for the information, I think that came about from being pregnant did it not ?
I knew a truck driver who had been driving around for 35 years. He ran 99.9% of his career flawlessly and only 0.1% did not go as it should and he did some damage. that does not mean that he was a bad driver, after all, he had already driven 4 million miles. having a bad day is normal for us humans. thank you for reacting positively and with pleasure to something that we all enjoy.
Life in general is the greatest show on earth, that's what the song is about. Not their show;)...
Kinda fitting that you were distracted by an example of the greatest show on earth while reacting to The Greatest Show on Earth, lol
Yes, the song celebrates all life through all eons. They end the song with "We were here" suggest we are just lucky. The greatest show on earth will continue with or without humankind
@@manuelusteri3380 yeah, quoting his own book, did even deliver those parts live with them at Wembley
@@ruma9687 I'm not sure about all the excerpts, but I've been under the impressiont that at least some of them are actually from Charles Darwin.
@@Norpal yeah, my bad. The quote about 'endless forms most beautiful being evolved' is from the origin of species. Propably more quotes from it too
Tuomas has the whole record in his mind when he composes, not just a song.
Wow. Just wow.
They crucified Groot and used him as a keyboard stand
Those bastards 🤣
😂😂😂😂
Yes! Groot it is.
That's because Tuomas is a DC fan.
I’m so obsessed with this song. I have the studio version, multiple live versions, and even the videos of the live versions on my phone. This is a song that will always be a masterpiece no matter what generation listens to it
Cuting interludes breaks the Magic of this song
As a mathematician with a deep love of music theory: yes it totally makes sense. Tuomas has an astounding understanding of sound and music. I think great composers understand how a performance plays out in the minds of listeners. They're not orchestrating a band or a show for us, those are just the tools they use. They are conducting us.
I think it's not about their Greatest Show on Earth but the show we all are a part, life it self, all the living things we see around us, that's the Greatest Show on Earth. From the big bang (?) upto today 🤗 All the best 👍
You´re right. The song is about the theory of evolution from Charles Darwin from the beginning of the world (big bang)
Even upto a time mankind is long gone. For me, the message in the song is we humans are not as important for Earth as we like to think we are.

I would be interested in seeing your reaction to "Dead Boy's Poem" by Nightwish live at buenos aires. It's a more acoustic sound and Floor is amazing, which really goes without saying at this point I guess.
Yes, that version of Dead Boy's Poem is so lovely.
Supporting this idea, that song is very beautiful to begin with and Floor raises it to all new heights.
"Dead Boy's Poem" Buenos Aires Live 2018 showcases the softer side of Floor's vocals
Agreed!

Actually, it's not Groot but another Marvel character named Korg. You can see the connection.
Or their high Hopes pink floyd cover, he really shines there
yes! The Islander please!
And While your Lips are Still red too... I mean, all songs featuring Marko are awesome
yes please do The Islander from the same show!!!
Yeah the islander is beautiful
Marco really shines in their Pink floyd cover High Hopes, chills!
Yes Christie you really should listen that version
The High Hopes tribute is epic - you urgently should do that one!
@@TheVoiceLoveCo You're welcome Christi. Keep up the good work you're doing! xx
Life, evolution and nature is the Greatest Show on Earth, so you being distracted by deer is perfect.
For the figure I was more thinking about Atlas (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_(mythology)), holding up the celestial sphere, substituted by keyboards.
Someone said that the figure on the keyboard was Groot, but I'm not so sure about that....
yeah i'm a big fan of Nightwish but that "theory" is not strong and get refuted easly because of the cause/effect that science is based on you will end up in an infinity of them

I guess ”the number of unfound great sopranoes exceeds the number of found ones” as well, just to quote a part of the final narration...
Great reaction! So true Nightwish is really so artistic.
There's so many people and that big production because it was their 20 anniversary show. Since you didn't have time to do some research about the song, here's a little bit for you :)
The greatest show on Earth refers of course to life itself.
Thank you so much for this wonderful education! Love it!
I 👏 LOVE 👏 THIS👏 It makes so much sense to me. Thanks for enlightening me, David! Yes!!!
Love it! Thanks for this wonderful comment! 💖
I almost cry when Richard Dawkins was skipped 😭
This performance still blows me away.
It never takes many words if genius meets passion. You just feel it and it touches you.
It is a gift, being able to see music in the mind before committing it to paper. Mozart, Beethoven, Brian Wilson, Bernie Taupin to name a few just have that as their gift - Tuomas certainly belongs.
He certainly does.
While your Lips are Still Red and The Islander are a great listens to enjoy Marco's singing even more !
This comment exactly
Also his solo stuff. Stones is great.
As a side note we are a few days from Marko's birthday. He will turn 54 on the 14th.
My a few months younger bald head is envious of his long locks! I turn 54 come June.
At 2.55 "... they never fail to disappoint..." 😲
You might want to rephrase that... 😂😂😂
Oh gosh. Blergh. 😝 My apologies. I cannot tell you the trouble I had with this video from start to finish. Yikes.
@@TheVoiceLoveCo oh, yeah, I forgot to tease you about that, too.
Lol, I noticed the same thing. It's about the same as when Floor says before "Last ride of the day" in Wacken 2013, "with audience like you guys, what more can we wish for" 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheVoiceLoveCo And no worries Christi, you are the best
@@TheVoiceLoveCo well, watching your glee saying it, I'm sure *nobody* failed to get what you *wanted* to say. Heck, your enthousiasm lights up my screen even with the sound off... 😎
When i watched this live version for the first i had no idea who Nightwish were, but i thought this sounds awesome.
Then i read the lyrics and watched it again, it was a whole new journey.
This has got to be one of the best pieces of music ever made.
Haven't smiled much last months, but when watching you enjoy good music..😍😃
I love seeing someone feeling the music like you do. Just found your channel and I want to see more. Love what you do
Thank you once again for your beautiful and insightful reaction to the genius of Nightwish!
Storytime and Ever Dream are an absolute MUST-SEE for Christi!
Well, your reaction is just spot on. You observe and diagnose this masterpiece perfect.
Nothing else to add - just superb reaction from - as always.
Glad you got round to this. Epic!
Thank you for your reaction and analysis, I thoroughly enjoyed it! You're such a beam of light!
I find the cuts well made and indeed very slight, no problem for this fan. I only wish she had gone through the whole video until the end.
Great reaction and appreciation of amazing music
Hi ma'am
I would recommend you to hear this song from the album directly, with your headphones, lights out, eyes closed, you will understand everything and hear everything.
First time I listened to it when I bought the album in 2015 it was like that, Nightwish gives those kinds of experiences. It's amazing.
What a fantastic idea. I lose so much doing these reaction videos. Thanks!
Brazilians thank you very much for your videos have subtitles, great work, love your analysis and the way you behave while listening to music ... amazing
Great reacción Christi, nightwish is amazing and the shows are perfects, from the lights, pirotécnic, the sound of each instrument, the powerful, melodic, heavenly, voice of Floor, the lyrics
The fans, wow!
millions of years in one great song ;)
You are so right.. Tuomas is a genius..greetings from northern germany 🤩 whenyou hear Floor and Marco listen to Raskasta Jouluo the Ave Mariia
🤩
I did not know Floor Jansen and I'm dutch. Came to her from the "Beste Zangers" show. Then I watched her in Nightwish and I fell in love. I've been playing Nightwish and Nightwish reaction videos now for days and night, barely getting my sleep.
What is that?!
Currently binge-watching Lost in Space on Netflix. It's very good, enthralling and hard to look away. Nonetheless for a reaction to The Greatest Show on Earth, that shiz is getting paused and here I am.
Add some Chinese takeaway and we're om the exact same agenda... 👍😃
The deer out side your window is what the song is all about, the diversity and history of life on the earth.
Just sublime 🦉💜🙏🏼
Floors parents where in the audiance at that show. Now i am proud to be dutch... can imagine how they felt there.
As a parent that would be an incredible moment! You should be so very proud of Floor! And your country is beautiful. I loved it when I visited there. 😍
Despite the fact that we are so direct?😜
@@Tamm1965 , OK, YOU WERE HERE!!! :)
Thank you that was awesome. It’s an amazing performance love your reaction. 😃👏🏻
We are one
We are a universe
Forbears of what will be
Scions of the Devonian sea
Aeons pass
Writing the tale of us all
A day-to-day new opening
For the greatest show on Earth
Man, he took his time in the sun
Had a dream to understand
A single grain of sand
He gave birth to poetry
But one day’ll cease to be
Greet the last light of the library

It is stunning to think about. I love this comment so very much and thank you for leaving it. It refreshes me as I'm feeling a bit diminished over the quality of this one on MY end. Nightwish shines. Period. And I'm undone once again by their beauty. Wow!😘
Yep we teach it to our children here in the Netherlands. The Flute (FLUIT)
And als the Irish "backpipe".
Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
This is a truly a musically masterpiece,... 👍 ❤️ 👍
Tuomas is a great composer. He works on other projects like Auri with Troy and Johanna Kurkela. The song "Night 13" has a beautiful vidéoclip.
This it's definitely their greatest masterpiece so far. The songs it's about life and evolution from a biological point of view, "The Greatest Show On Earth" its Life. And actually the whole album ("Endless Forms Most Beautiful") from which this song is, it's mostly about this ideas. And the person you hear reciting at the end it's Richard Dawkins, so, I quote this to explain a little:
"The song title is taken from a 2009 book by evolutionary biologist and atheist writer Richard Dawkins, concerning the evidence for biological evolution. He sent me an email a few weeks later accepting the invitation."
"
"Later in 2014 we then recorded his parts at Hats Off Studios, Oxford. This is a huge honor for us, since Dawkins is one of our biggest heroes and his writings have been huge inspiration for the album."
By the way, I Love your videos!
And yes, as a compositor, Tuomas it's
arguably the most outstanding in the present time, as far as metal music concerns.
loved your reaction to this its a shame you couldnt hear the narration very well as it really helps to frame the song itself - they are quotes read and written by Sir Richard Dawkins who even appeared on stage with them to do it live in Wembley.
Milan, also the little nod to Metallica as an influence in their musical development, when Emppu launches into a few notes of "Enter Sandman" !! 😊😊
I took that to be symbolic of Musical evolution and passage of time - Bach to Metallica
I saw this posted the other day by someone. Floor and her husband, Sabaton drummer Hannes van Dahl have a young daughter Freja.
Freja's first day at day care:
Teacher: " Freja what does your Mommy do?"
Freja; "She is a Meral Goddess"
Just love your reactions, and your smile😁
WE WERE HERE!!! ty great reaction :)
I am pretty sure that those low pitch tribal growls in this song are actually Floor. Marco's growls are high pitched while Floor's are low pitched.
That. Is. Incredible! What?! Wow!
I must not have watched this before. Being distracted by the mating ritual of wildlife while listening to this beautiful song about the evolution and flow of life on our planet could not be more fortuitous! How Very Cool! I envy your windows!
Kiitos! You should watch this entire concert! It is magnificent from start to finish. By the Finish! LMAO!!!
We were here!
15:50 Nope, that prehistoric grunting was being performed by Floor. I can't remember which song it is, but Floor actually does deep growl vocals *underneath* Marco while he's singing. Takes a bit to spot it 'cause it's so unexpected!
Truly! Shock and awe! 😮
@@TheVoiceLoveCo "Yours Is An Empty Hope" is the song where Floor is growling..

Also for a treat look up Marko and Floor doing Ave Maria. It makes me cry its so starkly gorgeous.
They are certainly well fit for the head banging and Floor's "Windmills"
I think someone mentioned it for that reaction, but Tuomas has Floor's vocals in Poet removed from his feed because of the emotions she generates. He's gotten better, but the Mother And Father portion, especially, was too much for him.
When they come back on stage that music is part of the song. Its on the album. Here they used it so well.
Hiya. The twirly-twirly hair thing is called The Windmill and I had to smile at your early slip of the tongue, as the fireworks were going off at the beginning, when you said "...they never fail to disappoint." LOL. All the best to you.
Ugh. My apologies. So. Many. Issues. with this one. 🙄
Watched it again and since you like Marco singing...The song "While your lips are still red" at Wembley 2015. Here he sings and Floor does backing later in the song.
WE WERE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is Nightwish at it's best, all are equal on stage and add to the show... Can't really replace anyone to mess up with the chemistry of this band, Jukka made the perfect choice for his descendant btw..
Beautiful show, Beautiful reactor.
It is so fitting for you to be amazed about a herd of deer while listening to a song about beauty of evolution and all life on earth!
THANK YOU, my fellow Nightwish/Floor jansen fan ❤❤❤ Tuomas is a Master Composer like in the old days 👀🎶👍 The Greatest show on earth is Life and therefor Evolution
