In my opinion, the Dodge Viper GTSR is one of the most well rounded race cars. It was complete overkill in the GT2 class against the Porsches and stays very competitive in the GT1 class against the corvette, Ferrari 550, Listers V12 and Saleen S7s
Note: The Viper didn't have much success in GT1 racing. In the ALMS, the Viper competed in the GTS-2 class (GT2) against the Corvette, Porsche, and Saleen.
@@christheradar Oh ok, I thought that in the AMLS GTS class being corvette c5r and viper were GT1 equivalent as well as the FIA GT season 2001 2002 when vipers raced against the Ferrari 550s and Lister Storms (V12 monsters) . Honestly if Chrysler gave a little bit more support after 2004 for the Viper GTS - R it would stand well against the Ferraris 550/575, Maserati MC12, Saleen S7R and C5R/C6R in that 2002 - 2010 era.
@@christheradar This isn't correct. While I loathe to quote from Wikipedia, this comes direct from their page on Group GT1: "Following the omission of the original GT1 category in the 1999 season, the FIA GT Championship was restructured, such that original GT2 class would be elevated to the top class of the championship, and become known as GT while a new class, N-GT would be the lower class in the championship. The equivalent of this in ACO sanctioned Championships would be the GTS class, and the GT class. In 2005, both classes would become renamed as "GT1" and "GT2" respectively." GT2 effectively became the new GT1 after the original iteration died, thanks to Porsche and Mercedes. The Viper GTS-R was quite successful in the early years of the 2nd generation of GT1, winning the FIA GT Championship and the Spa 24hr endurance race in 2001 & 2002. Unfortunately, despite Oreca's and customer teams' best efforts to keep the cars competitive, Chrysler stopped all development on the GTS-R after 2000. It's a testament to just how good the car was that it was still capable of winning the French FFSA GT1 Championship in 2005, despite being made obsolete by newer, more developed race cars like the Saleen S7-R.
Thank you for sharing this history with automotive enthusiasts!! Being a huge viper fan it’s always refreshing to see people share this kind of information as many people don’t realize the many successes the viper has had. And this is the first video I’ve seen actually talking about the 5th Gen GTS-R platform history in IMSA.
Great video. Goat car. I started the red and white GTSR at formula SAE when it was there as a show car and almost sh*t my pants with how loud it was. Went to see them at Watkins Glenn in 2014 and remember watching them dominate in the late 90’s early 00’s. My ultimate fan car.
I remember when these things first showed up at Sebring. What a sight! And that sound was defending. Although we were rooting for the Champion Porches, back then, I was happy when they eventually found the winning formula and started winning races. Best era of sportscar racing 💯
Pure Viper pørn. I've seen all Vipers at Le Mans, less 1994. I'll never forget that gloriously smooth and loud V10 and these eyewatering curves. Awesome vid my friend! Greetings from Holland.
For those making the next Video on Viper, it is NOT a Lamborghini designed engine. They were contracted for (5) prototypes. One ran with help. One ran with more help. Three delivered in pieces. Team Viper then designed the entire V-10 themselves using the water jacket philosophy of Lamborghini. That is it.
Yo Chris honorable mention ! - don’t forget about the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe ! If I’m not mistaken Competition Coupe was built to accommodate smaller privatized racing teams and the GT3 class of that era when the GTSR began to fade away from the highest levels of motorsports like you mentioned .
I wished the Oreca team factory raced the Dodge Competition Coupe. Btw I have a separate video about the Dodge Viper Evolution and the Competition Coupe is mentioned.
I am not saying this because I'm italian...but I really have to say that, to me, the ONLY american supercar that is really iconic is the Ford GT40. it's really a question of style: a supercar is not only speed (today there are sedans that are faster than supercars for example) but above all a cult object, a special object that you love to follow in the factory in its creation down to the smallest detail (as happens, for example, in the Lamborghini ateliers), a concept that has never existed in American cars which have always been "half-baked supercars". The GT40 is for me the greatest exponent of American supercars, the Fort GT has been able to reinterpret the concept quite well.... but you opened it and inside you found pieces of the Mondeo (so to speak, I wouldn't be surprised if it were true though ). The Viper for me is not really a supercar at all, it is a muscle car.... real supercars are made in a totally different way.
I have to say yea viper racing car but what if dodge put in a v8 powered hellcat motor in a viper racing car you may never know. I done it in Forza motorsport 7stuck a hellcat engine in the SRT Viper ACR that's my favorite car that I ever done it's a track day monster
I can promise you the direction that Dodge is going with the future EVs, they will never do that, and speaking of Hellcats, Dodge is ending production of the Hellcat in 2023. If I told you that Dodge is returning the snake, the last thing I'd think they would do is put in an electric engine or a V-10 hybrid.
doge is amazing and did you know that if peugeot will go to imsa they will rename there car to doge which means that the doge will come back i heard this from a roumer and i think nissan will join imsa to using alpine but they will color it red and black thats all for today and say happy holoween in the philipines and theres more in wec the gte pro will be gone in 2022 the final race for gte pro why because porshe and ferrari will leave gte pro because they will run in lmdh and lmh and corvete will tured into a gte am but its the last day for gte cars in wec on the bright side in 2024 gte cars will replace as gt3 cars starting in 2024 which means the return of ford because they already build the mustang gt i hope you like my cament christheradar because i just give you some big news
@@christheradar I did, it couldn't beat the big boys, so it downgraded to be competitive. You need to learn a simple lesson about European motor sport, nobody cares who wins the lower classes. They are just there to fill the field. It's like in the 80's, nobody asked who won Group A, Group B and Group C was important.
@@23GreyFox This is the dumbest statement I ever read. Just because the Viper couldn't beat the GT1 cars and switched to GT2 class to be successful doesn't make it *irrelevant.* Chrysler reckoned that right move for the car to get wins. It still beated European teams from Porsche etc. Plain and simple. Really? That's blatantly wrong and untruth to say. Plenty of folks care about every class wins and not just the overall wins. Higher classes don't make the lower classes *irrelevant. All classes are important* and *matter* in motorsports. Peace.

the viper was the 1st car to be RESTRICTED BY THE FIA in early 2000s BECAUSE it dominated and beat all major manufactures
They got absolutely smacked in GT1 which is why they retooled for GT2 and began their dominance

I’m upset that the LeMans GT1 class RT10s from Rent-A-Car race team is the most over looked vipers. I watched them race.

I got to sit in the viper race car when they raced here in Baltimore Maryland that was one of the best day of my life.

Thanks for the clarification. That made me more knowledgeable when when I bring my Viper to car shows.
I was about to say the same thing. Lamborghini helped with the aluminium casting process. The design itself was all Chrysler.
Good video, only missing gen 3 and gen 4 viper gts and gtsr racing footage while you were discussing it. I will be the only 1 to notice.
Thanks for featuring this American 🇺🇸 Supercar 🤘🏻

Full respect for the ViPER taking on the Porsche , Merc and McLaren. What's the point of going racing and winning against shitty cars.
What is the grey car in upper left corner 4:00
The black one? That's the Camaro, the catfish Camaro.
