I think the hate for 16 might come from that you only get one of these per console generation. If you don't like what they're doing with one, well, see you in 7-10 years. I loved 16 and its the first FF game I bought at launch. Usually, I'm not playing these till they've been out for a decade or more.

Im kind of in the middle….
-while the side quests are fantastic for world building….their rewards….horrible. For people who typically play action games, side quests usually offer upgrades, accessories, or new armor. Side quests in this game offer exp and ability points. Kind of redundant after a while from a reward standpoint. I personally liked the side quests for the reasons you mentioned. But my gripes are still present.
-exploration: again, the variety is the problem. Most people expect a game with maps like this to have hidden items to search for. And if you encounter a hunt or strong monster, youd expect a good drop or guarded item to be there after you beat the monster. This is very rarely the case. You beat the monster, you get ext/ability points, you move on. Yes some of the side quests interact with this, but the rewards you get are repetitive. Even the crafting materials hold no inherent value. You can make the best weapon in the game by the end game without using hardly any crafting materials you accumulate from the entire play through.
-combat: nothing to say, i love it.

A lot of critique on XVI seems to be centered around expectation rather than what’s there. For me the hunts/sidequests themselves are the ‘reward’, however maybe down the line better rewards for quests could be implemented - perhaps some of the new DLC equipment that changed combat significantly.

It’s not that it’s just not an RPGs by any means, the world is drab and boring, the sidequests are literally half fetch quests, the animations are stiff and low quality and the eikon fights are 50 percent mash square for intensity and cutscenes with an hp bar laid over them. The only memorable song is the ending song. The story is is it’s best quality. This would’ve been a better standalone movie not a mainline title.

I liked XVI quite a bit but the exploration complaints certainly weren't unfounded, specifically with the chests in the world. Yes, there is the occasional piece of armor or weapon to find, but if you've been keeping up with side quests, almost all of the weapons you can find (I think there's like 1 or 2 swords that can actually be better than what you'd have on hand) is worse than what you have for keeping up lol, and you cannot upgrade them. In addition, 80% of what you find is just crafting mats. It begs the question of why they even placed chests around the world to begin with.
Hell, even the Masamune was worse than what you can have on hand when you find it and it isn't even a top 3 weapon of the game, and as a big FF nerd this hurts my soul.

  • @ImusakHctividar
    @ImusakHctividar 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think my biggest gripes are Waloed is undercooked and Jill is underutilized. In the case of Waloed, I was curious what kind of hurdles and challenges I'd have to go through to get to Odin or what the settlements and culture would be like, and while the tower battles were nice, it felt like I was able to just walk up to the tower and that was it. I know it's purposefully empty but it still feels weird to have this huuuuuuge region be almost completely abandoned. What if we had to break through a huge orc territory? Stuff like that would have been nice. You also got almost no Ifrit on Odin fighting, it was mostly just regular combat, which feels weirdly underwhelming when the Bahamut fight took you above the stratosphere.
As far as my thoughts on Jill go, it always felt like she got pushed to the background, even in her own story quest. It would have been great if we got to control her as Shiva the same way we took control of the Phoenix during certain moments, such as when Clive was duking it out with Liquid Flame. Would have also been nice if she could have helped out during the raid on Origin. I don't understand why she couldn't access her abilities anymore since every dominant prior to her was able to do so after getting megaman'd by Clive. It seemed like there was just a cooldown period, but story was like "Nah, Jill's gotta stay home for... Jill reasons."
I say all this having recently 100% the game. It's a really great experience during its highs, it just felt like some characters were underutilized and some parts could have been expanded upon. My guess is the devs were running out of steam by the time you reach the Waloed part. Then again, given the craziness that happens after, it's hard to say. Either way I liked the game, just felt like there could have been some slight adjustments here and there.

I’m honestly with you there. I felt like Jill got sidelined so much. Really, almost every female character in this game got the short end of the stick. Jill constantly gets sidelined, even towards the end of her own arc. Benedikta is set up as a tragic figure only to go insane, die, then be seen only twice more in the game as hallucinations by other men, in which she is always treated as an object of desire (not to mention her head getting cut off specifically to motivate Hugo into by king after Clive). And all the other female characters (Tarja, Martha, Isabelle, Eloise, Charon) get a few (pretty interesting, granted) side quests and that’s it. It really feels like someone at the company wasn’t a fan of any female characters to the point where they either have to be sidelined or killed off. And I like all these characters, I just think they deserved better (especially Benedikta).

I really like the game. I love the mature tone, I love the over the top Eikon battles, I like the world and characters, I like the combat, I like the zones. My main critique is I don’t care for the main villain..and when he/it came into focus in the story, my interest rapidly declined.
I understand that the game is built around Clive and his Eikonic abilities…I do miss having other playable characters though. Oh well! There are certainly some nitpicks I have with the game, and personal things I wish were different, but overall the game is still a 9/10 game at the least.
It’s a game that you can easily get the hang of because the abilities and combat is relatively simple at face value, but like any game you can get very complex with combinations of moves and your play style.
And for how “easy” the game was, (I found it easy but of course not everyone will) Final Fantasy Mode does offer a more difficult challenge, along with the Echos of the Fallen DLC, which I believe Omega is the hardest fight in the game, cause I actually died multiple times on it. But the DLCs mini bosses were actually more difficult overall, so I think that it’s a good direction.
I think when you have your Music a 10/10, Voice Acting 10/10, set pieces and moments a 10/10, characters 10/10, you look great, your story is great, and your only real negatives are the side quests weren’t anything special gameplay wise, you have some slow moments to calm you down before the next overload of crazy shit you are to experience, and your main villian isn’t that interesting. Then your game is at least a 8/10, and depending on how important those other things are to you it could be higher

Been a fan of the series since I was a kid, here's the things that didn't work for me.
About the combat...once you've found the eikon combination that works for you...there's really no incentive to switch around, every major boss works exactly the same, the game never encourages you to change up your tactics.
About the story...I wish Ultima didn't exist, I wish Barnabas/Odin had been the main antagonist. Ultima is incredibly uninteresting as a villain, the world had so much awesome lore that we never really learn about. I think the most interesting part of this universe are the eikons, show us how the current generation of dominants came to be, tell us more about their backstories.

The incentive to change up your build for me has always been to have fun and see what else the game has to offer. Sticking to the same weapon combo in DMC V even gets stale after a while, experimentation is what keeps action systems consistently exciting.
I do feel Barnabas should have gotten more attention - one of the genuine complaints I mentioned was some characters were underutilized and he is one of them. I do enjoy Ultima a lot though, I feel a game where you’re constantly ramping up in bosses you have to have that “kill god” final boss.

It's not hate when it's genuine legit criticism of the game's short comings. I love every FF and even have collector's for most mainline FF games. That doesn't mean I can't criticise this game.
Combat is fun until you get a combo that works every single fight. Then it becomes rinse and repeat. No elemental effects at all. No status effects at all. The side quests stories are not bad, the execution is bad. It's basically Ff14 as a single player game and trying to force players to cover every corner of an empty map. Hunts are easy. There's almost 0 rpg elements. Basic stats and no character builds at all. It's just about doing all the side quests and coming back for the best weapon. The story is alright but dragged on too much at the end. Pacing is terrible.
The boss fights are great. So the highs are real high but the lows are real real low. Compared to 7 Remake, remake lows are ok,meh, but the highs are extremely high. Overall 16 to me is a 7.5-8 compared to 7 Remake a 9. And rebirth is looking like a 9.5-10

It's one of the rare occasions that I have not played the game, but every quest I saw had depth in Final Fantasy XVI from my brother's perspective. It not having any awards is okay in my book since everyone last year had banger game releases. I loved this game as much as I love the Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty, I loved it like I loved BG3, I loved it like how I loved Spider Man 2, I loved it like I played Persona 3 Reload, I loved it like I loved Zelda Totk and Fire Emblem Engage. The reason people weren't satisfied is because there wasn't much there. You can gesture at the positives all you want, but if there was any actual fulfilling or substantive content in the game, it would not have come and gone as fast as it has. The glitz and glam is great but its not a substitute for actual mechanics. I know this is gonna sound dickish, but the FFXVI story is so genuinely awful and shallow that I cannot believe anyone seriously considers it well written. Nobody actually does, they just pretend it is because it vaguely resembles game of thrones for half of it before turning into your standard JRPG "kill god with friendship and love" Shonen manga nonsense. I firmly believe games are art and have the capacity to tell stories no other medium does, but FFXVI is some of the most brainless derivative bullshit I've ever experienced.
This is "Ant-man And The Wasp on Blu-Ray" of video games. It has the veneer of something cool, but there's absolutely no substance. A good example of how little thought went into some of it, is the fact that basic underlying story makes no sense. Why did Josua hide from Clive for a decade? He let his brother live in slavery and infinite torment with guilt, never even once attempting to reach out despite having a Deus Ex-machina super secret ninja guild at his disposable, for absolutely no reason. Why? Well, they needed the Jon Snow and Bran scene from GOT season 8. Thats it.
What does Jill like besides food? What's her sense of humor? Did she miss Torgal all those years? Where are her parents? does she even once mention them in the entire 40 hour run time? Does she hold any resentment for being a ward of rosaria? Why does Clive's uncle not even acknowledge her presence?
What does Josua like? What are his goals? Does he on some level feel relieved he doesn't have to rule rosaria anymore? What are his feelings towards his mother? Does he feel anything after watching her literally slit her own throat?
There are no answers to any of this because this is not a serious story. It's a series of set pieces designed to make you go "ooooh" and "aaaaah" and at not point asks you to think.
on a gameplay level, It has possibly the worst exploration I've ever played in any RPG or action game, bar none. At least in something like ninja gaiden you might turn a corner and find a key to a locked door, or in DMC you might find a health upgrade and a jumping puzzle. FFXVI has none of this. You could not explore for a single second and miss absolutely nothing. The devs knew this which is why they put 2 gil every where and made the loot beams comically big. I didn't die a single time and put 0 thought into any of my abilities. Spamming eikon abilities when they're up was more than enough to steamroll every single hunt and main boss in the game.
On every level it is so clearly aiming to be as inoffensive and sterile as possible, from the combat, the world design, all the way to the plot itself.

I agree with everything here. The villains were also disappointing and one-note. Benedikta had great potential, but they killed her off too soon. Is Benedikta aware of Ultima and Barnabas' servitude toward him? Does she have feelings for Hugo, Barnabas or Cid, or none of them? Does Hugo know she's in a relationship with Barnabas? We only see Benedikta and Hugo interact once on screen together at the beginning of the game, and we're supposed to believe that they had a deep enough relationship to fuel Hugo's rage. Once she died, the political intrigue of the story began to fade.
Barnabas had great potential but then you find out he's just Ultima's pawn. There's a cutscene where Ultima appears as his dead mom and Barnabas puts his head in her lap, suggesting an Oedipal relationship. I was hoping they'd expand on that, but it never gets brought up again, and since the characters never witness this scene between Barnabas and his mother, there is no discussion about it.
I really wanted to know more about the religions in this game. Metia also seemed like it would be way more important to the story than it was.
I think XII and Tactics did the political story better than XVI did.

Thank you for being a real person/review . TBH, I am starting to lose trust in most reviewers these days. People don't judge games based on it's own merits it seems. Instead, people will dismiss a whole game because of some issue with the story, music, art design, etc. Man, all I would like to know as a consumer is "is the game fun" and "is the price point comparable to the amount value that the game provides". All I hear is people comparing a new game to previous titles nonstop.smh

My only rebuttal to the conbat is good. It just really really needs to expand for those more familiar with DMC. 6 abilites is super constrained compared to what you can do in that game. I dont want to make a build. i want to use all of the abilities ( or at least 75% of them ) during the same fight. Dont say it's overwhelming until you try to master Dante ( he has so so many moves)

It’s a good game. I enjoyed it. Probably some of the best set pieces in any game to date
Rebirth however. Is so full of life and wonder. it makes me feel like a kid again. It makes me feel the way I used to feel back in the PS2 days. It is a masterpiece. it just blows 16 out of the water in so many ways. i think given a second chance, a 16-2 would have the potential to be just as good as Rebirth.

For as much as I loved my time with FF16, I can't deny that I do relate to the critiques presented (some of it is over-inflated but regardless)
For one, the side quests. Most are fantastic. But yes, the cutscenes and actual gameplay component of them can drag on depending on the quest in question.
The worst offenders are something to the effect of "go fetch 3 of x item for", like 1 minute of cutscenes. So now I'm spending far too much time simply walking from place to place, fighting some mooks, and picking up said items with little to no additional banter or input from Clive and the party. It just feels like busy work, annoyingly.
Which kind of leads me to my only big issues with combat. Most of the smaller enemies are just punching bags. Which is a shame because when you have actually involved enemies the combat becomes *fantastic*, a bit spongy at times, but it genuinely tests you and pushed you to mix things up. But most of the enemies you'll be fighting during sidequests feel like fodder most of the time.

ff16 felt like it went 50-50 with its direction, when I was playing it I was constantly thinking if it was a spectacle fighter like dmc/bayo or a jrpg. They said it was still going to be rpg-like but there are VERY little rpg elements compared to something like ff7 remake or rebirth, tales etc u get the point. The action spectacle figher aspect was actually well done tbh but i felt like the movesets felt limiting bc it was restricted to only 6 eikon skills not including ur base moveset. I wish we were able to use more? Or maybe have different weapon types aside from odins sword. Maybe we could've used titans gauntlets as an actual weapon instead of just being skills or ramuh's staff.

I pre-ordered this game and really wanted to give a new Final Fantasy a chance after XV bored me and VIIR disappointed me. I ended up really liking this one.. but not quite loving it? Still was worth the mones, but I did pinpoint what bothered me about it:
1.) Combat was absolutely a highlight for this entry, but I do think it requires a lot of patience to really get to the point where you can truly have fun with a diverse set of skills. And part of that I feel comes from the foundation being very basic compared to something like DMC where your starting skills are still satisfying and don't feel like "Square, Square, Square" before you can do a cool move.
2.) To coincide with the combat, the difficulty of this game was *way* too easy. As soon as you figure out how much the dodge and parry mechanic absolutely breaks this game, it's pretty much all over with the rest of combat from there. "Final Fantasy mode" should have been there from the start.
3.) While I think combat, yet again, does build up with time throughout the battles, I don't think Eikon battles really pick up steam until Barnabas's fight melded regular fighting and eikon fighting together. They really do feel very mechanically simplistic, either with Phoenix's rail shooter sections or Ifrit's very limited moveset. That all culminated in the Titan fight in particular overstaying its welcome far too long for me and what would have otherwise been a favored boss for me with pacing on par with Metal Gear Ray in Rising: Revengeance and the Asura's Wrath boss fights instead becomes one of the most tedious I've ever sat through. The irony is that the previous fight against Hugo _is_ my favorite in the game.
4.) Story-wise, I get the intent of wanting to push the dark fantasy with this game and that premise has turned people off from this entry and even proclaim it not a final fantasy because of it and the pure action combat. But I'll be honest, the game's story got really jarring for me when it became really obvious that this was a Final Fantasy story that just happened to be a dark fantasy at times. Not every "dark fantasy" moment really landed for me as a result, but I will give props to the last side quest to involve the adopted brother. If you know the one, it still gave me chills to see in all the best ways.
5.) I can't remember whether it was Kotaku or Ign that complained that Jill was just a "pretty face" and received backlash for harping on the "pretty character" instead of the "western uggos". But honestly.. they were kinda right? Outside of maybe one impactful scene and a single impactful arc, she really is relegated to side attraction and supplementary role to Clive, as cute as their dynamic is together. I absolutely wanted more of her at the time.
6.) I won't go into spoilers, but the ending felt rushed and unearned to me. I didn't like it compared to other properties that executed it much better.
Despite all that, I can say without a doubt I had no regret purchasing this game at launch and playing it all the way through. I think a lot of the complaints are overblown while still seeing where others are coming from, and even having some of my own that don't coincide with others. But hey, at least we got something pretty unique out of this.

FF7 Rebirth is a good contrast, I enjoyed the combat for the most part (the bosses felt weaker than remake though) but it's so utterly bloated and they pad it out by making you interact as slowly and clunkily as possible with most of the minigames and checkmarks on the map. The sidequests feel like murder half of the time. It's a 20 hour game with 40-60 hours of filler. FF16 on the other hand gives you punchy sidequests that let you visit the corners of the map exactly once rarely retracing the same steps, while ensuring you see it all. Yeah the progression could feel more rewarding instead of the "increase dps by 5 damage" every chapter section but I very rarely felt bored doing 100% of the side content. I only wanted more of the characters' time.
I would love to get a full eikon swap mode with elemental scaling on enemies as a more technical mode, would never get old

  • @theexperience7522
    @theexperience7522 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I don’t think any reasonable person would say that this game did everything incorrectly. The game had a very arcade feel to it which isn’t a bad thing at all. It just isn’t what I look for in an RPG and definitely not what I would expect from a Final Fantasy title. I personally think that the best way to defend this game would be to capitalize on the intriguing combat, cool boss fights, and story moments as those are the shining achievements of this game (you are welcome to name other things). But I DON’T think you should try to defend the main critiques of this game because most of them are pretty valid.
Exploration is a bore. It’s very hard to take your statements-defending the exploration of this game-seriously when there isn’t a single optional dungeon in the game. The optional battles you do are more like challenge battles than actual dungeons. There are hunts, but none of which fall outside of the linear formula of “find monster and kill it.” Not to mention none of the hunts are repeatable meaning my dreams to refight king behemoth lie behind the gates of a New Game +.
Finding weapons isn’t exciting in the slightest, because unlike other RPGs that have depth weapons that offer stat differences making you consider equipping different pieces of equipment (which in turn encourages player expression). Weapons in ffxvi offer only two stats that increase mutually with every weapon you get. No new weapon skills or fighting styles, just the same thing but with a different looking sword.
And to be honest, the combat isn’t THAT deep. It’s hard to say that it is when there isn’t much combat variety, the skills you unlock in the center of the skill tree are fully accessible after just a few hours of gameplay not to mention most of it is just clutter (the “jump” command is listed in the skill tree???). There are 4 (plus 1 eikon ability) unique abilities offered with every eikon but you are only limited to using 3 eikons and a measly 2 skills per eikon leaving well over half of the skill tree just completely unutilized at any point of the game.
The party members are stagnant, and from a gameplay perspective just don’t matter at all. They aren’t custimizable at all and the only one that can take commands is Torgal. There are a couple of character inclusive sidequests where your party might have something to say (or unless they are the client of the sidequest), but otherwise they are just mobile cardboard cutouts only providing input at the next story flag.
If you guys think that me judging this game as an RPG is unfair, I think this is disingenuous. If a game is going to label itself as an “action RPG” it deserves to be judged as such.
I still love this game, I got the platinum trophy and am looking forward to the dlc coming out. But I don’t deny that this game was a disappointment. I think there are plenty of things this game does right, but it just isn’t a game I will remember.

Obviously the performance issues didn't help the game either.

Final Fantasy XVI kicks off with all the fireworks of a grand finale, then quickly devolves into what feels like an endless loop of soap opera meets fetch quest. It's like, blast through a blockbuster opening, then retreat to your cozy hideaway to chat everyone's ears off for an eternity. Next, trot off to the next town for a snooze-worthy side quest, hunt down some arbitrary key, and just before you nod off, wake up for an epic Eikon showdown. And just when you think there's a twist coming… nope, it’s just the same old cycle on repeat, six times over! By the halfway mark, I was hitting the skip button like it was a snooze alarm. Despite the solid acting and a story that had legs (if only they’d learned to run!), the game's pacing felt like a marathon with too many water breaks. So, a solid 6/10-enter at your own risk of boredom. Replay value? Nah.

Back when the game first came out I wrote a huge 2000+ word review for it, but I'm going to condense that for this comment.
For me when all was said and done Final Fantasy XVI was truly an epic journey from start to finish in every sense of the word, excelling in every single possible element the game has to offer providing one of the best narratives I've ever experienced in a video game with an incredibly detailed and immersive world to learn about starring a rich cast of well written and realistic characters in no small part thanks to its incredible side quests and masterclass voice acting performances. All topped off with an enjoyable combat system and mind-blowing boss fights which is all only enhanced thanks to the truly next-gen visuals, sound and production values overall alongside a masterfully composed OST too. Some people say XVI isn't a true Final Fantasy and to that I will just say that Final Fantasy XVI reminded me what a mainline Final Fantasy at its best has always been about. A mind-blowing, generation defining experience that will stick with you for life.

I think the side quest design was what thew me off. Narratively, I love them. They really fulfill the purpose of expanding the world of Valisthea. In terms of gameplay engagement outside of combat, I never got that sense of exploration where a side quest takes you to a secret location or has you do puzzles. Or perhaps have completely optional villages due to starting other side quests. You can boil it down to find item, kill a thing, talk to person in most cases. I’m not saying this makes the game bad, this is just something I would have loved to see improved upon or be taken as a lesson for future games.

That moment of satisfaction when you manage to dodge a powerful attack and follow it up with a counter that happens to break the enemy's toughness gauge, allowing you to perform an onslaught of ultimate abilities.
FFXVI was a masterpiece except for the ending. 5/10 for that part but I can't let that take away from the absolute blast I had with the rest of the game.

As much as I love FF 16, this game is unequal. Some parts are really good, maybe even exceptional, whereas others are mediocre. The weakest parts of the game are clearly: the exploration (how the world is constructed. Especially after playing FF 7 Rebirth. The towns in 16 are really bad compared to Rebirth. With the exception of Lostwing, the locations in 16 do not feel like real places), the side quests (in terms of story, they are really good. They made care about characters like Otto or Tarja. But in terms of interactivity, they are mediocre), the difficulty (Locking final fantasy mode in new game+ was a bad idea. It took me around 70 hours to finish the game, I am not willing to start over just for a higher difficulty), the lack of interactivity(Again, after playing Rebirth and seeing all the different ways you can interact with the world, 16 seems really lacking. My only guess is that they did not have the same budget as Rebirth), and the fact that you don't spend enough time with the supporting cast (unless you are one of the Rosfield brothers, you don't get a lot of character development. Even Jill suffers from this. And some characters like Cid and Benedikta are wasted way too early). Also, combat may be good despite being easy, but it is too simple and doesn't require any strategy, which can get repetitive really fast. In comparison, both God of War 2018 and Ragnarok have better combat systems.
I made a lot of comparisons with FF7 Rebirth, but I prefer the tone and world of 16. If it wasn't for the many flaws the game 16 has (including the above), it would be better than both 7 Remake and Rebirth.

There’s things to criticize in the game for sure, but it seems that the only criticism these people have is that they wanted it to be a different game, something the devs explicitly told us it wouldn’t be. It’s an incredibly disingenuous and childish argument to say this games problem was that it’s action based.
People pretending that their interpretation of what makes a Final Fantasy is law is also super annoying, FF is about innovating and doing new things with each entry, that’s why everyone has a different favorite entry, I don’t want a stagnant series stuck to the same old combat system

I enjoyed it for what it gave me, one of the best soundtracks of the mainline games, some of the best boss battles in the franchise. The game though had way too little rpg aspects- it is an action rpg, not a pure action game. Weapons are just for aesthetics, no abilities to them, each one is replaced in about an hr of playtime. Limited items, no elemental matchups or status effects- heck, God of War had several status effects and that is an action game. Side quests were certainly an improvement to FF15- but the game took itself a bit too seriously. I know the plot was serious but every FF game plot is a serious almost world ending story- yet makes moments for lighter and more comical moments which could have helped FF16 a bit- Clive literally was monotone whole game in emotional variance.

Look at where the praise for this game is coming from: it's coming from mainstream gamers, people who play a wide variety of genres and who pick up all the biggest game releases.
Look at where the disappointment is coming from: it's coming from hard-core JRPG gamers, who don't play other genres of games.
I'm a hard-core JPRG gamer. When people like me say that FF XVI is not a Final Fantasy game, what we mean is that the game lacks Final Fantasy's identity. Identity is not something you slap onto the box with the name of the game, identity is something you put into your work.
Final Fantasy XVI doesn't want to be a Final Fantasy game; Final Fantasy XVI wants to be a Game of Thrones video game. That's fine, but I want a Final Fantasy video game, so I'm skipping this one.

@@cristianoducceschi3547 I'm 46 years old. I'm old enough that I played Final Fantasy ONE on the NES when it first released in North America. I tried, desperately, to find a copy of FF 4 (Final Fantasy 2 when it released in North America) but couldn't. I played FF 2, 3 and 4 when they were released on playstation years back, and I replayed FF 4 and 5 when the pixel remaster came out last year.
Final Fantasy 6, for the SNES (FF 3 at the time) is my favorite game of all-time. I replay it once every two years, without exception. FF 9 was, in my opinion, the best FF game, and I rank FF 9 amongst the greatest games ever made, and I still get teary-eyed listening to "Roses of May" (General Beatrix's theme).I was a college Sophomore when I was playing FF 7 for playstation back in the day, and I played FF 8, 9, 10, 10-2 and 12 while I was in late college / early grad school / early professional life. 12 was the game that soured me on FF, after 12, the only FF that I looked at and thought "that's interesting" is FF 14, and I don't play MMORPGs. Nothing about the 13 trilogy looked interesting. I might play 15 someday, but there's nothing about it that grabbed me. 16 just felt, ugh, not my thing.
After the failure of the theatrical film, the DNA of Final Fantasy changed. Hironobu Sackaguchi, the series' creator, left Square. The last FF game he made was FF 9, but FF 10 came out right after 9, so while he didn't work directly on it, he hired, and mentored, all the people who did. FF 12 came out after a long break, and it was fundamentally different than what had come before.
It's not that I've never played FF, it's that I've played every single one up to 10-2, and I noticed that when 12 came out, the series felt completely different from what it was before. That's fine, and if you liked it, I'm happy for you, but I liked the DNA of the first 10 FF games, that's what I want, and that's what FF no longer is, to me.
I get it, I'm an old man whom time has passed by, but I like what I like, and am what I am. I switched over the to trails series, which is what I love today.

Because the world is not fun nothing about the lore or the world building is interesting, the waring kingdoms are all paper thin you can't even go to the big cities nor interact with the people, the Empire starts a war then occupies the Dominion all in the 5 year skip how about the people do they even care does anyone care about us going around destroying the Crystals? No do other nations start to protect their crystals of course not, nope because we are laser focused on Clive, ok is Clive interesting absolutely not, from the start you discover that Joshua is alive and he is Ifrit so his revange story ends right then and there, does he want revange against the Empire? Absolutely not he couldn't care less about the Empire. Do we get to see him living 13 years as a slave and a wyvern? No let's just skip all that, does he care about his mother who betrayed him and reason why his father is dead and their kingdom has fallen, nope Clive just doesn't so does clive care about? Nothing, what about the villains? Are they interesting? Benedicta dies way too early before we even get to know her or her back story with Cid and The Odin guy, was Hugo interesting no he's just a big baby keeps throwing tantrums he could've been an interesting character if they allowed Benedicta to have say in the story, the only one left is Odin and lo and behold he's nothing but a crazy zealot I kept rolling my eyes every time he started delivering his boring monologs, and then there's Ultima the most basic ass villain just evil because he's evil no interesting history no good reasons just basic, even Chaos from the first FF was more interesting. To preface, I only experienced FF16 through playthroughs, so my only real criticism is story based. My biggest criticism is that the game tried to do too much and ultimately suffered because of it. It tried to do political intrigue with warring nations and schemes, but couldn't dive in fully because it had to setup for the deeper fantasy lore with Ultima. It tried to introduce an ancient race of technologically advanced people with all these weird remnants of their society, but couldn't really spare the time to actually explore it because there's not enough time.
We saw the Empire and from what I remember, we don't really explore the capital, just the surrounding villages and outposts. And pop goes their Mothercrystal. All of a sudden the Empire is in shambles and it kinda doesn't matter. Their takeover of that one city to be the new capital kinda doesn't matter cause we never established why we should care for these two places. Sure we care about those villages and that one Empire town with the brothel, but not the actual capital itself. This extends to literally every major nation, leaving us pretty disconnected besides a few towns.
Ultimately, I believe this game should have been 2 games OR one of the 2 major plot points be downgraded to a supporting plot element. Those major plot points being the Game of Thrones esque politics with warring nations, and the deeper fantasy elements with Ultima, the Blight, and the ruined civilization.
First game should have focused more on the warring nations while sprinkling hints and mysteries about Ultima, the Blight, and the true nature of the Mothercrystals. It should focus more on worldbuilding and making us care for the different nations and their issues, so that when the second game comes and all hell breaks loose we care for actually saving Valisthea. The ending could be either Titan Lost or the destruction of the Empire's mothercrystal with Cid's death.
Second game should ease us into the world again by dealing with politics, but should slowly pivot to more of the fantasy elements with Ultima. Waloed, the orcs, and Barnabas should play a bigger role in this sequel as antagonists. Leviathan should actually be part of the story, whatever form that should be. Then by the 50% mark, all hell breaks lose with the whole Bahamut fight and we transition from warring nations to Ultima's master plan (cause at this point most of the dominants are gone, and the nations are ruined). Then the story concludes from there, whether it ends happy or bittersweet, I don't mind either way.
There you go, a basic rough outline of why I think FF16 is rather disappointing and how I think it should have been handled.

BUT the boss battles and main story alone are worth playing. 7/10 for me. oh, and the music.. the music!!! 10/10

I hated this game, not because it's a bad game, it's not; I hated this game with passion because I truly feel like I was deceived.. cheated out of my money. I played all other FF games, I read that this one is also an RPG, granted it's an action RPG. Yet, there was little to NO meaningful RPG elements in it AT ALL. No party, no gear, no crafting, no elemental effect, no nothing!
This game should not have been called FF. Any other name and it would have been fine.

Its cool to say FF16 is not great. Its like, have you ever experienced anything like the titan, bahamut, and final boss??? Its such an incredible experience.

Just wait, in three years FFXVI will be a “misunderstood masterpiece”.

@@TheFlipsideShowits actually a mid game, its game play loop is repettitive. Its icon battles are gimics and the game has been made too easy. Its side missions are pointless, such a dissapiontment of a game.

We just had so many 10s this year, but 16 is truly incomparable and added a unique flavor to boss fights.

I think one thing people didn’t like about the combat was the fact there was no party system. But honestly, this game doesn’t need it. In the story, characters are constantly coming and going, so the party system would just feel underutilized. And most of the time, it's just Clive and Torgal. People need to realize that the games story and atmosphere have a HUGE impact on what the gameplay is gonna be. This games combat truly understands the story, and it fits perfectly imo.

I recently played final fantasy 7 remake and that was such a masterpiece of a game wonderful, now playing ff15 which has excellent story
I would get ff16 but my only hate for the game would be if the rumour is true that it destroys or overheats ps5s other than that looks fantastic.

If that is a concern, I can assure you in my four playthroughs it has not been even slightly a concern.

      FF15 has a good story?

      @angel__king 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@thew1ngmanit does. I played base game ff15 and I still really enjoyed it. People exaggerate it a lot. The overarching plot isn’t as important as the character plots
