Final Fantasy 16 Is Disappointing

Today, I want to share my thoughts on Final Fantasy 16. As a long-time fan of the series, I was really excited to dive into this latest installment. However, after spending some time with the game, I have to say that I was pretty disappointed.
The pacing felt off, with long stretches of exposition followed by some banger story moments but the filler in between really killed it for me.
The combat system is flashy and looks cool but there's very little depth to it. The game doesn't force you to fight different enemies in different ways rather any combination of attacks will do the job.
Overall, while I appreciate the effort that went into creating Final Fantasy 16, it just didn't live up to my expectations. I'll still be keeping an eye on future entries in the series, but for now, I'll be moving on to other games.

@@bobdylan1968 combat system isn’t the problem. The problem in the game are elsewhere and the problem with jrpg in general. For example the fact nearly all jrpg have small closed zones like theme parks where you do quests. It’s just not the exploration you have in games like Elden ring or Witcher. It’s underwhelming. They were cut down and forced to put the game on single ps5 disk by square enix due to low interest in the game, and 50% or more of the disk space is used for the boss levels and cutscenes. They had no space and time to make a real rpg with much bigger zones and deeper quests. Square enix decided to pour resources into ff7 remakes which will be two ps5 disks and true next gen game. That’s disappointing to me that square enix and fans focus so much on a boring dead game that is ff7. Just weebs you can’t get enough of sephiroth, cloud, and tifa.

@@Bahamut3525 the combat was absolutely a problem. It was dull. You did the same exact thing for every single fight. There was no depth, no challenge. Zero true progression. Gear meant zero. There were zero builds. Magic was useless and didn't even matter what dumb boring fireball you were throwing, they were all identical.
Ff7 remake just has outright better combat in every way. 16 is just more over the top, for the worse. You can't see shit as a result.
A SINGLE character in ff7 remake has more depth in their moveset than Clive by the end of the damn game. And that's not an exaggeration at all.
You end up using the same rotation of abilities, like you're playing a very bad MMO. Smash the same combo over and over and over, until your abilities are off cool down, spam them one after the other, the end.

The problem with modern press and social media reviewers is they are all afraid to be critical of games. I find social media has created these masses of overly optimistic gamers who pretend everything is amazing for the sake of increasing their reach and making publishers happy. There is this major disconnect between the reality of games and the sugar coated social media version. Also modern (and younger) gamers are sadly just easily won over by flashy cutscenes and shallow but rewardy mechanics. Mobile games have really ruined RPGs. There are so many unnecessary pat on the back / "wow good job" mechanics in this game. Things that trick the average gamer into thinking they are doing well in a game when in reality anyone is gonna do well in this game. It takes very little skill and has no strategy in our outside of battle. Sure FF was never really that hard but in older games you could put in a little extra leg work to really get more powerful and add more depth to combat.

I think you have a good point, I spotted a reviewer here who argued that the game was great because it was extremely linear and always told you where to go, so he never got lost, that it's so cool that there are no significant upgrading, customization or RPG equipment mechanics because those are tedious, he was "thankful" the game didn't have exploration because "that's boring", and the combat system is "deep" because you can chain combos (even though the game is not designed in a way in which you need to do it in order to beat it, you can still spam and get the same results without overcomplicating yourself)... and had the audacity of claiming that RPG is anything, because any game can be considered an RPG... it's ok if someone liked the game, but please, would it hurt to at least try a bit harder and present some meaningful, thoughtful critique of it? And let's not talk about the "FF games have always been all over the place" gaslighting squad.

I can forgive a lot, it’s Final Fantasy. It releases something I buy it, it’s that simple but…this is the first time that I’ve felt like the designers and producers have contempt for what they have to make. It feels like they forced themselves to put in any references to actual Final fantasy.
This game feels hollow…and I don’t feel any love in this product.
When the climactic cutscene ends and Ifrit poses dramatically victorious my heart sank every time it was halted by the victory screen. “Odin defeated!!!!!” …that could have easily been a passive thing that appears when all the cutscenes were done and regular gameplay starts again or when you’re forced back to the map selection screen, I know that’s a small gripe but it’s just so me symptom in a massively uncared for game.

The main problem I have with this game is that it is a Hack and Slash (not action RPG) COMBINED with RPG elements. Now why is this a problem? Well, a skilled Hack and Slash player who has played games like ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, OG God of War etc etc would have no problem launching enemies, stringing combos utilizing power up bars and such. But the issue is, is that since FF 16 is a RPG that is focused on experience and level progression, a hack and slash player cannot use their SKILLS to dispatch enemies if the player is a low level, therefore combat becomes a tedious GRIND. This game either needs to have damage increase significantly towards enemies or not make the game super accessible like a hack and slash otherwise the game becomes a chore to play.

Did we play the same game? It seems you either skipped the tutorial or just weren't paying attention. You stated there aren't any abilities that effect the stagger meter differently, BUT THERE! A LOT OF THEM. When you look at your abilities, you'll see there's a sword icon and a star swirly icon. The sword icon represents damage, and the star swirly thing represents stagger. Abilities with more stars do more damage. For example, let's just start off with your starting abilities. Rising Flames has 3 stars for attack and 2 stars for stagger. Scarlet Cyclone has 2 stars for attack and 3 stars for stagger. This means you want to use Scarlet Cyclone to break the stagger meter, then use Rising Flames for more damage after they are staggered. These stars also count for increasing the damage multiplier once they are staggered. So if you stagger them with basic abilities, Scarlet Cyclone will increase the stagger multiplier more than Rising Flames, so use Scarlet Cyclone to get to 1.50x damage, and then use Rising Flames for massive damage. That was explained really early on :/
Your basic playstyle of the combat is your own fault. You only have to spam basic attacks during the tutorial, once you are past that, then the rest is up to your imagination. Did you know you can jump cancel your basic combo? Did you know you can unlock an ability to double jump during combos? Did you know you can charge your weapon during combos? For example, you can cut your standard 5 hit combo short by canceling the last attack with a fully charged sword or attack, jump cancel ariel charge sword (which knocks them upwards), or fully charged shot. Not only that, Torgal is a GREAT combo extender. Assuming the footage is your, I didn't see you use Precision Sic once. Sic and Precision Sic are not the same. Precision Sick actually keeps the enemy stunned in place, allowing you to follow up with more attacks. You can only do Precision Sic after a fully charged magic attack, or ground thrust combo (I forget what it's called, but it's the same as Dante's Stinger move). Didn't ever go to the training mode to practice combos? You can also change archons mid combo, and animation cancel EVERYTHING with your limit break, which gives you even more possibilities. Idk man, it just seems like you didn't put in any effort to get better at the combo system.
Then you said the Trinkets make no difference whatsoever. I'm convinced we didn't play the same game. Berserker Ring is a literal game changer. The text says "Temporarily Increases Attack Proficiency with each Precision Dodge." What it doesn't tell you is that it adds a time stop animation and the attack bonus comes in the form of the same attacks as your limit break. Berserker Ring allows you to doge multi-hit attacks that otherwise wouldn't be possible to doge. But no, you're right, none of the accessories make a difference.
There isn't a single fight that took 40 minutes. But then again, you've already shown you don't understand the combat, so maybe it did take you 40 minutes. And the quest you're talking about was the quest to repair the bridge to unlock the next area of the map. It did not take 4 hours, it took about 15 minutes total. As for the other stuff, you're talking about side quests. THEY ARE OPTIONAL! YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THEM!! There aren't very many times where you're walking through the hideaway just to get exposition. There are a couple of times where you do it, but you don't do it NEARLY as much as you said. You do it like twice the entire game. And most of the NPCs are relatively close to each other. And Fun Fact: The side quests later on in the game teleport you back to where you need to go, so you don't have to go manually. I don't know man, it feels like you have ADHD or something. I beat the game a couple of days ago, and I feel like FF16 is fixed a lot of things FF7Remake got wrong. The combat feels faster and smoother, they cut out all of the animations when you're like walking through a wall or something. Clive really does have a good character arc. He went from Royalty, to Rags, to Outlaw.
You also mentioned there are no enemies that force you to fight a certain way, and you're 100% wrong. There are MANY enemies that block your attacks, and you must use charged magic, or your abilities to break their guard. Casters will cast Protect on their allies, rendering your physical attacks useless. They also cast Bravery, which drastically increases enemy attack power; you just don't know what you're talking about. I can understanding simply not liking the game, but you're giving invalid criticism. You're saying the game didn't do a thing, and the game does exactly what you said it didn't do.

One of the biggest flaws with the combat system is its omission of 'progression', and replacement by "flexibility" - you can upgrade your skills once or twice, and that's it. Their base strenght though is all roughly the same, which is ofc cool for people who like to stick with sth, but completely annihilates a sense of an actual "I'm getting stronger!", which is further nullified by the minute DPS-changes via weaponry. Everything combat related is just very pretty, but very shallow.

This game takes a lot from 14, down to the structure of the storytelling (the 2 or 3 hours of nothing between big story plots is exactly the same as 14) and the watering down of gameplay systems (the rpg, leveling, and crafting systems)

I loved the Eikon battles, many of them had me screaming. I loved the combat too, it's a fun game to play. Some of my favorite FF tracks are now from FFXVI. Strategy
Thats why this game feels so different! There are no status effects or elemental attributes in the game. Every battle is basically hit dodge until it dies! Thats fine in a 1-2 min battle but the longer mid boss and big boss battles that can be 10 minutes plus and no strategy and it gets repetitive!
Marlboro is one of the most FEARED monsters in FF history due to its move BAD BREATH which cause every possible status effect possible!
IN ff 16 since there are no status effects you are essentially fighting another enemy with a lot of HP!
Thats the issue im having! Feel like im playing a mediocre action game!
IT doesnt help that besides fighting there isnt anything else to do...
No mini games to play to break up the monotony!
No hidden side dungeons with uber powerful monsters!
IM literally at the end of the game and considering skipping the sidequests as the rewards are trash! All of the good stuff comes from the hunts! Ive done all of those so far as these are challenging from a pure endurance stance! Remember no status effects! If you arent equipped properly you can get destroyed in a few hits! BUT if you are good at dodging they can be all taken down with little strategy!
    ONCE again Strategy
I personally liks my games where i have to take a methodical approach to win.
I m down for a button masher but for me its one and done!
These type of games dont have a lot of replay value.
Once you get through all the over the top battles which are absolutely amazing and feel epic you know what to expect in another replay of the game!
I like over the top. I just finished star wars jedi survivor!
But once again that game as great as it was is a one and done for me personally.
This game is a Ff game
Its a great story and over the top boss fights
You already kniw graphics are great.
Just no strategy or methodical approach to fight battles which is what makes a FF game have replay value!

Like they could've done so much more with him, especially if Benedikta was still alive, that would've made the second half of the game so much more interesting with destroying the Dhalmekian crystal. The problem you have with the story is mostly due to quest design. It reeks of MMORPG design philosophy. Exposition dump, fast travel to quest location, kill 8 hornets, fast travel back to quest giver, and another exposition dump. Absolutely creatively bankrupt. No quests where there's some change in gameplay loop, minigames, etc, no exploration, no detective work, nothing at all. Just the same location marker that you travel to, and do menial chores. What should have been a 20-25 hour game got needlessly bloated to around 50 hours, it's absolutely ridiculous.
With all that said, it was still a good game, but man they really need to learn some harsh lessons from this. You cannot design a single player RPG like an MMO. Everything that threw me off about FF14 was present here as well. At least the combat and spectacle fights were enough to keep me engaged (just like how the dungeons and trials in FF14 were really good and kept me engaged - the story, holy shit. A good 2-3 hour story, with 12 hours of padding - and yes, that includes the recent expansions)

You hit everything. Linear in regards to the story is fine. The problem is that there's no mystery or rewards for exploration, no depth or value in the side quests, and no sense of character development on a personal level. Had they made it so that there were hidden swords and worthwhile loot that you could obtain that you could find, or even grinding for components to craft weapons and gear that were equal to or better than those that are given for just progressing in the story, and forced you to grind a bit more. Every component for a great RPG is there. They just did literally the bare minimum outside of the story. To the point where they might as well have left it out

I don't understand why they went with the mmo approach for XVI. I know XIV was the inspiration for how they approached this game but they should have made it more like Final Fantasy VII Remake or Rebirth where you have to complete some of the story but once you get to a certain point you can explore and grind till you can upgrade abilities to the max before continuing to the next area. The Story in XVI was phenomenal but the areas we explore felt lacking because there was so little variety. No snowscapes, not enough caves, secret areas, and the map is locked behind fast travel points whereas in XIV and XV you can get everywhere by walking/ferry.

I think S-E touched the right buttons with FFVIIR, not too "static" or "bland" like someone could think of turn based games (not me, but some people), but not 100% action oriented either. For me, the combat, customization, progressing etc were near perfect and I honestly didn't think they could pull it off.
However, FFXVI is straighforward action, not even JRPG action, and the "RPG elements" are only mere illusion to somehow say "hey look, but we have stats, and we can craft weapons/armors, this is a proper action-jrpg" . Kinda spoiler related to this: The level and equipment don't matter a thing, at least in your first run, I have heard that on NG+ it kinda gets better (highly doubt it) but I don't know if I will find out.
Eikons' fights and epic fights are probably the best of the game, but when you keep resorting to it again and again to keep the player hooked, it loses value and become trivial or even tiresome like a chore.
The battle system; combos are not anything to write home about (how they tried to compare it to DMC?), staggering is a pretty good strategy and fun, but only if it's done properly (FFVIIR, the beginning/first half of FFXIII come to mind) if not, it just make the boss HP sponges and a way to add artificial difficulty. What is the point of stagger an enemy if you are doing basically the same dmg? (I know you can get up to x1.5 bonus dmg, but is barely noticiable).

Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed FF16 and I was really excited for this game but as a completionist I'm kind of disappointed in the endgame after finishing NG+.
The game runs out of thing to do after finishing NG+ and the side quests along the way, there's very few challenging fights aside from the final battles, the crafting system is non-existent aside from upgrading your epic sword as you progress, and the game is just too linear to prove a challenge. Games too easy imo. I really enjoyed this cinematic masterpiece but in terms of gameplay I was left wanting more.

I dont agree that "its a good step for the franchise" at all. Since FF 10 its all been downhill, sales have been up yes but the identity of the game is all but gone and player sentiment is worse and worse. I personally love 13 and 15 faaaaar more than 16. I personally think the 7 remake was a big step forward and 16 was a step back. The action hybrid combat of the 7 remake was top tier. Meanwhile 16 is just a baby mode DMC game that relies on cinematics. Putting a few pieces of items on a character to slightly pad stats does not make your game an rpg, even shooter games like Doom and Halo Infinite have more rpg elements in their campaigns than 16 has. And for your point about padding thd story i 100% agree, example of this is Cowboy did a Lets Play, 96 episodes, only 40 of those episodes were main story content with only 15 of them being big battles and big story moments....

  • @jakeking3859
    @jakeking3859 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I think the main problem is that it tries to be everything all at once - it wants to have fast-paced action gameplay, but they also want you to appreciate their semi-open areas, hence your initial running speed; it wants to be story-heavy, but they realised just watching a game happen isn't very fun or interesting, so they included a bunch of fetch quests and stuff; they wanted to have these super cool flashy boss fights, but spent more time on them making them look good rather than making them feel good to play. No matter how big or flashy the enemy, if you beat it in exactly the same way as you beat a swamp spider, it doesn't FEEL like you did anything impressive.
I found myself getting so bored, especially during the boss fights. They just drag on and on, so much so that I started to wonder if I was playing the game right. Turns out I actually WAS playing the game wrong (I was hanging back and shooting magic at everything), and the game did get more fun after I realised that you have to go in and smack everything around with your sword - but I find the fact that you can play this game WRONG is a big red flag.
I also had trouble with figuring out how to manage basic mechanics, and when I finally looked up how to do it online, Google auto-filled it. Meaning that there are literally *basic functions of the game* that MULTIPLE PEOPLE had problems understanding. This is not good game design.
Every time I think about this game, I just get so annoyed. If you put this next to any other triple A game that comes out this year, I'm sure people who have played it will not remember it. It's so...bland. I keep forgetting names of main characters (seriously, even though they shout his name all the time, I kept thinking his brother's name was Jonathan), I have no idea what half the cast's motivations were, there was no reason to mistrust anybody, because they all state their business TO THE PROTAGONISTS'S FACE. There's no reason for you to think about anything, and so you don't, and then nothing makes sense.
One example is the whole 'priming' thing. In the early game, they talk about Jill needing to 'prime' before she turns into Shiva - whatever that means. But it just seems like 'gather all your emotions and get mad', since that's how Joshua transformed when he was ten. And it's not really explained how Clive transformed into Ifrit the first time. They then show Benedikta transforming after she 'loses contact' with Garuda, even though it doesn't seem like anyone else had that problem after sharing their powers with Clive. The next one is with Cid, who seems to be able to just...transform whenever the hell he wants to, no 'priming' necessary.
So...what is 'priming'? Is it something a Dominant knows how to do instinctively, because Clive seems to be having major issues. Does every Dominant have to do it? Is it instantaneous, or does it take time? I think you'd be hard-pressed to give anyone a concrete answer.

I’m actually angry. I was so excited for this game, and it’s just a slog fest. The part in the demo, and the part you fought Benedikta (also included in demo) and then the part after that got me thinking this is going to be so epic, but halfway in I realized nothing changes. No customization, enemies that just stand around, hp sponge bosses, terrible game design that sees you simply go to world map, go to destination, do some padding quests, talk to some terribly animated npc, fight some nobodies, then a recycled boss where I follow the same pattern of dodge, stagger, spam moves, and combos. Also at the end, I was fighting the same type of enemies I was fighting In the beginning, only reskinned. I honestly hate this game, and I hate myself for being so excited about it. Hope they keep creative business unit 3 away from ff7r. I honestly felt the opposite on the side quest! Perhaps its because I am use to playing rpgs with really padded out and blan sidequests, that I got really invested in this games versions of it. I definitely think it’s weird how they were added in suddenly before every giant main story dungeon. But the more I got to thinking it, that style of sidequest pop ups reminds me of mission oriented rpgs. It’s by no means similar to open world rpgs like Skyrim/dragonsdogma/ffxv, but I don’t find an issue with it. I was able actually feel for them, which is more than how I felt with a game like inquisition.
Because there was always a clear teleport to the next step in the msq, I felt like the game was shorter than I anticipated, and it took me a good 2weeks to beat it.
