  • I am an adult self-taught student sharing my violin 1-year progress video with all of you. There are so many inspirational people sharing their violin journeys with us all, and I would like to contribute to that collection. Anything is achievable if we dedicate the time and energy required to get there.
    In retrospect, I now appreciate the importance of drilling the basics during the initial stages of the learning process; intonation and bow control are both my vocal point for the next few months, and not so much learning new pieces. My path regarding teaching resources was Alison, the online Piano and Violin tutor; I cannot recommend her beginner course enough; that's not to say I didn't cherry-pick other resources from the abundance available. Her teaching method and lesson structure met my individual learning style. Hope you enjoy my journey so far.

    Today is Saturday, February 11, 2023 and I just had my first violin lesson today, as a 22-year-old adult beginner. I’m both excited and scared about where my journey with this string instrument is headed but seeing your video and progress gives me hope!

      Great to hear that you have started on your violin quest. My only regret is that I didn't start playing earlier in my life; that being said, better late than never. All the best in your own development, I would certainly recommend spending time on getting the basics nailed. It will help a lot as you progress onto more technical playing.

      As a person who started violin at the age of 9, I think violin will take you many places. Remember to loosen up a bit sometimes and good luck with your violin journey!❤

      Nearly 7 months on from this vid I certainly feel that I have started to relax. My bowing wrist feels more fluid, and there if notable improvements in the tone, ‘in my opinion’ :-). Originally I started out to inspire out sim to want to play an instrument. Yet as I progress, my commitment to playing continues to grow, keen to see where I can go with this.

      I started about a year and a half ago and it's the most frustrating and most rewarding thing I've ever tried to learn. I've recently FINALLY come into my tone and so now i'm really getting even more enjoyment out of it.

    Good work!! I’ve been playing the violin for three years and I can surely attest to the fact that it is one of the hardest instruments to learn. It’s extremely rewarding when you know how to play it but it’s also brutally punishing for any of the littlest mistakes you make. I absolutely love these kind of videos and I’m thankful for your courage to put this video up. Good luck on the rest of the journey. Keep it up!

    I taught myself the violin with no teacher. Music books with CDs were a big help. This started on 2015. I still can’t left hand vibrato, but you can.
    To me the violin is a mini music school in itself.

    Keep at it. I’m an adult beginner as well. 46 years old and started 2 years ago. Definitely has been a journey. Ask your teacher to let you know when it’s time to upgrade your bow or instrument. I just upgraded my bow and it has made a world of difference. Looking forward to more progress videos from you :)

    That seems great progress for 12 months, especially your first 3 months, I started about 6 weeks ago but am really struggling on my 3rd and 4th finger exercises, can't see myself getting to your standard in another 6 weeks, love the little gaelic tune at the end what a ripper, if I can be playing that after 12 months I'd be over the moon, good luck with it, I take it you must practice alot to get to that standard, how much time each day would you spend on practice.

    • @myviolinjourney.9821
      @myviolinjourney.9821  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks mate; great to hear that you have recently started playing. Practise-wise, I started during the lockdown period, at which point my job was also impacted, so I initially ended up playing for a couple of hours per day. In hindsight, that was too much as i was getting a sore neck from playing so much. In my opinion, little and often is the optimal balance. I am now 18 months in and have been able to maintain consistency with my practice, sometimes, it might only be 15 mins, but better than nothing.
      If I could have my time again, I would have focused my time on playing easy songs well as opposed to racing through songbooks only to play them at the same questionable standard. Once you develop the basics, it will translate over to new pieces which makes learning heaps more fun.
      Hope my 5 cents help,
      Would I be correct in thinking you are in Aus 'Ripper'?

  • @GaryGP40
    @GaryGP40 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work, but you need to really lengthen your bow strokes. Each note doesn't need to have a different stroke, especially in legato phrases. Generally when you see a slur it's a one direction bow stroke. Spiccato can help on a piece like the Strauss waltz, more of a bounce than a straight bow. Now, on to Paganini (I am learning the 24 Caprices, man are THOSE hard!). Keep making beautiful music!

      Hey, practice times have varied depending on other commitments. Don't beat yourself up about how much time you 'should' practise. During the lockdowns, I could practise for a couple of hours. There was a period over a few months when I would be lucky to get 15 mins. Over time I have found that 1 to 1.5 hours work well for me, and I have been able to sustain that on a daily basis.

      @@myviolinjourney.9821 Good decision. Because your vibrato was fundamentally incorrect. If you keep practicing it that way, you'll have to spend a lot of time unlearning it one day. Everything else looks very good for an one-year learner. Keep it up! Stay humble and keep paying attention to the fundamentals, you'll be great one day.

    Hi

  • @lowellirish
    @lowellirish ปีที่แล้ว

    Can I offer some advice? 🤔 First...I'm SO HAPPY that you ditched classical...and went into Irish! 🤣 Now you can start having fun...LMAO... Here is my advice:
    First, you're doing AWESOME!! SIMPLY GREAT!!
    RELAX. Relax the shoulder. All that tension is built up and transferring to the bow, then the strings...So CHILL.
    Your WRIST is super tight. Look at the video. Same with your neck...RELAX!! Let the motion become more fluid. OK? This in and of itself will set you 15 months ahead overnight!
    You're using alot of up and down single bow strokes. "Sawing" - try slurring more... combining 3 or 4 notes into one fluid bow motion...
    And stay in the 1/3 topmost of the bow if possible. Shorten your bow strokes...tighten them up. You'll get faster.
    Pay attention to the angle of your bow! Sometimes you're angling too much. And you want to "cant" your frog away from you...meaning don't use the whole of the hair...
    Your string changes are GOOD! Work on your downbow emphasizing where the beat is. Don't start attacking pizzicato, and more advanced techniques until you are ready...one at a time. You might feel you want to or "I can handle it"...but what you're doing is confusing your muscle memory and your mind...let those adapt FIRST...
    If you were at a gym, Monday would be chest and biceps. Tuesday legs,Wednesday, back and shoulders and thursday torso,hips etc. Every day is a bit of cardio...right?
    Same here. Don't do pizzicato, bow bounce, slurring, shifting and vibrato all in one day...practice scales daily. And THEN focus on 1 or 2 techniques.
    Keep going bud!! 💪

    • @myviolinjourney.9821
      @myviolinjourney.9821  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey James, thanks for the detailed feedback, love the gym analogy, strangely i had not thought about it like that, makes perfect sense. I agree with all the points you have highlighted and have been trying to work through them since this video was published. In 3 months time i will be at my 2 year point, I'm confident that there will be notable improvements. That being said, I cannot help myself when it comes to attempting more technically challenging pieces, so perhaps this will benchmark if I'm actually ready to take them on. From a genre perspective, I'm leaning more toward the Irish fiddle/ Gypsy style of music given that my playing ambitions are light entertainment at parties, however this is always subject to change. Exciting times.

      I’m pleased that you are finding this video useful. Much like yourself, I had no knowledge of musical theory prior to learning to play, fortunately I have rectified that now. Over recent weeks I have focused on my right wrist flexibility which has made a notable improvement to my sound. We all have those days were frustration gets the better of us due to our own expectations. Please continue to practise and I’m sure your skills will progress beyond your expectations.
