  • Why this plug-in hybrid could be the best 3 Series

    The 2020 BMW 330e is a plug-in hybrid executive car that combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. It has a pure electric range of up to 37 miles and can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 6 seconds. Throw in a sensible pricing structure and it could just be the most appealing mainstream 3 Series of all. Rebecca Jackson puts the 2020 BMW 330e to the test in this CarGurus UK review.

    Got the previous 330e and absolutely love it. I use for work so track all my mileage. A full charge (240v not a quick charger) costs around 80p from empty to full and takes just under 3 hours. Quick chargers at work charge in less than 2 hours. The EV range is nothing like advertised as I get around 14 miles but the regen from the engine is very quick. I do 14000 miles a year and last year, 70% of my journey was on electric. A typical round trip to work is 60 miles of which I get a regular 45-47 miles on electric and that’s with a boot full of work kit. Average combined consumption so far is 76mpg (can get over 100mpg in the summer as battery performance is better). This new version is supposed to be a big improvement so would consider upgrading when I need to swap. I would not go back to a diesel after having a hybrid.

      Colin Poyzer Colin Poyzer but considering the extra cost to buy the car and cost to charge. How long before you break even compared to buying a 320D or a even cheaper 320i? That would be interesting to know.

      Me too, @ the moment I'm getting around 16 miles a charge, I work 15.1 miles away from home so both commutes are electric only & usually with lowest heating setting for demisting. Cost is 13.9 p/kWh X 6= not even a German vicar.
      New model has a larger battery by sound of things & the touring is looking very tempting.

      @@NickLiang never compared to the diesel. and this car has no grunt if in electric mode only either. you either go full electric or fully combustion. hybrids are just an expensive hobby which is fair enough but it shouldnt be marketed as a smart choice.

    Some people are totally missing the point of this car. It won't suit everyone, however if you are a company car driver, the 330e makes a lot of sense. I would have gone for another Jaguar XF, loved having two over the last 8 years but at over 30% benefit in kind tax, that's just unjustifiable for me! Get your finger out Jaguar, if you had a hybrid XE/XF I'd have ordered one....
    I drive over 30k miles per anum so will regularly go over the electric range but it means that every day I get 30 odd miles for just a few pence of electricity. The charging time is not an issue as it will be plugged in as I sleep. It will also allow me to use parking spaces with charging points (which are currently often vacant) allow me free travel in low emission zones and save me thousands of pounds a year on tax!
    It's smaller than I would like (particularly the boot) but for the saving of one month's BIK tax, I can purchase roof rails and a roofbox for holidays with the family. A large roofbox is over 500l, the size of a standard 3 seriese boot.
    As a company car driver, I have always had to resort to something like a 2.0L Diesel. These have got really good over the years but are still noisy at idle and don't sound great as you rev. The performance is fine but a 330e will perform well above the level of a good 2L diesel. For me, I would not be able to justify the cost of going for a similarly performing diesel so the 330e is an easy decision for me.
    I would have liked the 530e but its much more expensive so I'd have to resort to a low spec. Colours are also limited and I prefer the interior of the new 3 series over the 5. I hate that tablet stuck to the dash like someone forgot to include it in the design so just stuck it there. The 3 series has it better integrated into the dash. Not to mention that the 3 is a much newer design with all the new technology included like xtra boost and reverse assist.
    For these reasons, I'm ordering a 330e.

      @@davidkerr4103 I’m getting one in a few weeks, like you the tax reasons are a big driver to the decision. Actually looking forward to this car much more than previous times ( diesel Passet ) I to do lots of miles 50k+ a year , probably won’t in honesty get huge MPG but will try my best.
      Been told today from a friend who recently got one that the car charged up to full from near empty on 35 miles of motorway driving ! He had no idea of MPG , pity be nice to see the justification effect and any benefit.

    But why is every review of the M-sport? The list price means you pay much higher road tax and you benefit from boy-racer bodykit and harder suspension, why would you fall for the marketing hype? Get a sport plus with the same drive train and gadgets but much cheaper.
    And get the oyster leather, it's way prettier than boring black.

    • @TheophilusPWildbeest
      @TheophilusPWildbeest 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JD-env1 Put your journey into the satnav and it will work out when best to use electric and when to use petrol, clever, and it will give you a lot more mpg than a petrol car. Broadly speaking you will get 25-30 miles of your journey on electric, the rest at 40 mpg, the overall actual mpg will depend on lots of factors including type of road and speed and how much you use each system. If you want to drive 200 miles back home without any charge in the battery then you will be on petrol all the way, it does put a bit back into the battery but it only has enough for very low speed manoeuvering and pulling away, which is helpful but not significant. Best to think of it as a car with two engines, you pick which one to use, or let it choose itself, or select both together in hooligan/sport mode. I find this mode selection adds a whole new dimension to driving that I enjoy. The real benefit to me is the ease of commuting through heavy traffic in electric mode, and the joy is then pressing a button and having a completely different type of car to drive.

    Have the older version of this car and just a word of warning that the electric only range decreases over time. I started at 24 miles and after 3years after a full charge the car will do about 10-12miles. The boot space is only a problem if you plan on lugging people to and from the airport on a daily. Eco mode is a waste of time as it doesn’t charge the battery sufficiently and is only worthwhile if you cruise at 55mph as any faster and it drinks petrol. Mpg is about 33-36mpg which is about right as the battery will be nearly depleted by the time you get into a decent commute. Quick enough to overtake most cars on the motorway and the weight of the battery does not affect handling unless you’re planning to throw it round a track and as most people are not car journalists so the cost they get is a few mini-roundabouts and B-roads this car is pretty tight not Ford Fiesta ST fun but not cumbersome and dull Ford Mondeo abject apathy either. Great car if your commute to work takes in a motorway and a few twisty roads if you do many miles then I’d pump for a decent petrol.

    Just be warned that the electric range isn't too great, so if you have a full day of driving (even a bunch of small trips), then you are going to rely fairly heavily on that petrol engine. Which is fine alone, but you definitely notice the reduced power compared to hybrid mode.

      Maybe. On the other hand: I have an F30 330e. I tend to buy a petrol car again next. Or maybe full electric. The petrol car can be a mild hybrid, but for the moment I don't want a full hybrid anymore. It is very economical, but it's also heavy and less economic than full hybrid, due to the loss from the transmission. If you drive a lot on 90 km/h roads with a lot of red lights and roundabouts, like me, you always have to keep in mind which system js providing power. You can put the car in sport mode, but then you won't be driving electric at all.

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without any tailpipe poison other than whatever is spewed out by the power station, and ignoring the end-of-life pollution aspects (lithium isn't widely recycled yet, and it has a large environmental impact where it's extracted). It's not quite cut-and-dried as you may think it is; EVs have the potential to be much greener than ICEVs - but they aren't there yet, and hydrogen powered ICE are much greener than hydrocarbon-powered engines.

    • @neilbrandon
      @neilbrandon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dlevi67 in the UK we have a considerable amount of renewable energy and I use 100 percent renewable. Also power stations generate electricity far more efficiently and less polluting especially not pollluting at ground level in cities also consider the environmental impact of mining oil and the whole end to end process of running cars on petrol or diesel that has to be processed and transported to petrol stations. Also lithium is now being recycled. And batteries going to second life deployment.

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@neilbrandon Unfortunately "100% renewable" means nothing unless you have a wind or solar farm in your garden. If you (like most people in the UK, including me) buy energy from a retailer, what matters is the wholesale mix on the grid, and that is 50/50 at best, if one counts nuclear as renewable (at least it's not CO2-emitting). Your energy supply isn't interrupted because there is no wind in the Irish Sea or it has been raining for a week in Wiltshire... however rare those two events may be.
      The environmental impact of extracting oil is high, but so is the impact of extracting lithium and rare metals needed for batteries and advanced electronics (more of which in EVs, though the amount of electronics in ICEVs keeps increasing). And this is before we start taking into account the huge amount of infrastructure that will need building to allow reasonably widespread EV usage: 45% of dwellings in the UK have no parking space or garage, and I live in a town of 10,000 people where there are 6 public EV charging points. Producing concrete, steel and aluminium to build the infrastructure generates a fair amount of pollution and greenhouse gases too.
      Again, I'm not arguing that EVs are not greener than ICEVs (though with hydrogen the argument is still open, at least in terms of CO2); I'm just saying that the argument is not so clear cut, and it may well depend on where you are and what kind of EV you are considering (see for example th-cam.com/video/6RhtiPefVzM/w-d-xo.html).
      FWIW, something like the 330e is not green, and is clearly something invented to take advantage of tax incentives - see for example www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-46152853 That particular incentive has been scrapped, but there is still a considerable tax advantage for company car drivers to have a hybrid.

      dlevi67 thanks for providing a more balanced response. I believe hydrogen will be the new economy. Specifically green hydrogen.
