Excellent review. I own a 2017 BMW 330e and a 2021 Volvo XC60 T8 Recharge and I must say this comparison is spot on. Everything that was mentioned from the handling, engine noise, interior class, and suspension ride comfort was exactly as I had experienced with these two models.

I’ve spent time driving both. If you are a 50+ road warrior, the Volvo seat comfort wins hands down. 95% of driving is not on the weekend hitting the dragon’s tail. How about comfort and acceleration onto the Highway.

I don't see a clear winner. Based on your comments, it depends on what you want in a car. The Volvo may not handle as well, but it is quieter and on most roads, smoother. You said the interior quality is better on the Volvo. You said the Volvo has more room. Volvos usually have nicer seats. OK, the BMW is more composed, if firmer over broken pavement and steers nicer. So it is the better driver's car. But does that make it overall better? I'm not sure I agree. I also find Volvo to just have a more interesting interior. BMW needs to take some chances. BMWs are solid and so but a bit sterile. Volvos have less sharp dynamics. What tradeoff do you want? Just seems to me the Volvo may turn out to be the easier car to live with.

It would have been helpful if you'd done a 3rd mileage comparison between both cars in their hybrid mode. Do a fixed drive of about 50-100 miles and compare the mpg at the end. For company car drivers who rack up the miles it is a useful figure to have.

Makes no mention of the Volvo being 4 wheel drive (provided you have some battery charge left)? If you compared list prices with the xDrive BMW they are almost identical to the Volvo. And anyone with any experience of trying to make the slightest of progress on a slightly icy minor incline in a rear wheel drive 3 series might see all wheel drive as a significant plus point? So with price levelled out, there's not much between them and it may just come down to what you want other people to think you are like based on being either a BMW driver or a Volvo driver.

You should address the consumption in hybrid mode. or automatic mode. that is, that the car itself decides whether it should run on petrol or electricity or both. and a hybrid car should consume less energy when driving in the city. as it will transfer energy to the battery every time you brake or pull your foot off the accelerator pedal

I put the Volvo S60 in the same class as Infiniti, Acura, Volkswagon, Lexus. They're fine. Not any huge dealbreakers. But they are not premium. More like semi-premium. 0-60 is definitely better on the Volvo S60 T8, but the BMW 330e beats it in the 1/4 mile. BMW wins everywhere else in every way, and is less expensive. You can get a 2021 330e base for about $35k plus tax and dealer fee right now after summer rebate and tax incentive. And 0.9% financing over 60 months. Considerably more for the S60.

Infotainment screens, economy and wheel diameters are imperial while engine sizes, boot spaces and tyre widths are all metric. Note, tyre sizes are imperial (diameter) and metric (width). I moved from a Seat 184 (aka golf gtd) to MBW 330e for family (space) and € reasons (€7500 back from Irish Gov as "electric"). A no brainer (financially). The 330e is a lovely, kinda fast, comfortable car. It has more oomph on a straight line but just doesn't corner like the Seat. It's just not as much fun for the driver who (occasionally) wishes to push it. The 330e has excellent enconomy but looses (front) grip unexpectedly (I have to use run flats as rural roads) in the wet compared with the Seat which "gently" told me of impending slip. Great car, good economy, ticks all the boxes bar the "yeah" factor.

@@myslecinaczej8674 I am on your side. Some other channels cover it better and let me tell more about the driving.
      1. The boot of the Volvo, especially the Wagon V60 is not smaller in the plugin hybrid. The BMW however has no second floor, since there is the battery. Volvo has the battery in the middle console, that's why the big hump at the back seat.
      2. No channel mentions their S60/V60 T8 comes in the R-Design, which is more sporty and even less comfy as it can be. There is an inscription version, which is even more comfy to drive and has the best seating in this class. They can even be compared to S-Series, A8 and 7-Series seats.
      3. Only some channels have capable drivers, who are willing to handle the car like a sports car. Also almost none found the setting to change the handling of the steering wheel. I drove "only" der D4 of the V60, but let me tell you how it was impressive in corners. I went 60km/h (40mph) on a twisted hill and the car didn't even flinch in the corners. Yes, there is some body movement, but not as bad as described in this review. You can take the car sporty around corners and you won't be disappointed.
And somehow the bigger engine was forgotten in the final words. currently in this class Volvo has the biggest plugin hybrid engine. With an empty battery the other cars can only watch it from the back. Some feature like "holding" and "charging" the battery while driving are also missing. AFAIK none other manufacturer has that.
I also don't think the reviewer appreciated the silence in the car enough. Especially with the Bower and Wilkins Sound System you can ignore everything that is not in the car. If you are like me and don't want to hear engine sounds, then Volvo is the MUCH better choice. Especially as a wagon.
Oh, and When you fully equip the BMW and the Volvo they cost only 2k difference. Which, honestely at 75k€ (dunno what in Pound or $), you mostly will go with the more comfort and luxury, which by any means, the BMW can't match. As a sporty car, you won't get the plugin of BMW, but rather the M package.

Another Bimmer love fest. The BMW is dramatically less costly? BS! Comparably optioned (and both w/AWD), the pricing is on par. Volvo generally gives better dealer discounts.
Volvo wins only in boot space? What a farce! The Volvo absolutely annihilates the BMW in acceleration, yet will return similar fuel economy. He discounts this, as he discounts the Volvo’s better reliability. Even with this R-Design sporty interior, the Volvo is more comfortable to drive longer ranges; we’ll any range. Better seats and more rear passenger room. These new Volvo’s are also the safest cars to transport your loved ones than any other. They are vaults!
Btw reviewer, you can select added weight to the Volvo’s steering for sportier feel. Your comment about the less refined Volvo engine sound is laughable, because it’s negligible, but also considering how the Brits get along just fine with every other car on the road equipped with a clackety diesels. Now you are critiquing slight buzziness of one 2.0L 4 cylinder to another? Nonsense. Check from BMW in the mail.

    • @joseluislopes3956

330e isn't available as AWD, so your price comparison is flawed from the start. And maybe people don't want all the standard equipment of the volvo (like line centering assist) and are willing to have a lower price
Back seats have more leg room, but the middle seat has a bigger and larger hump, so it's less comfortable for 5 people.
Volvo infotainment is a mess, touch screen only while driving is a road hazard. Any car without physical button for AC heated seats and radio gets a big No from me. Also even using just touchscreen, BMW wins in ease of use
And using dealers discounts as an argument is just laughable, because it depends heavily on your local dealer (I had a way bigger discount on my 330e then what Volvo was giving me for a s60 T8)
Volvo powertain did feel less refined when I test drove both of the cars, even tho it had more power, the acceleration felt laggy and the gearbox didn't respond as fast as the BMW, in confort or sport mode

Good as Tesla's Superchargers are - they are still nowhere near as fast as a pump, and if you don't have the ability to charge overnight at home (apartment, on-street, etc.), then you are even more screwed. It's pretty simple really. There's also the fact (though this is of course subjective), that the Model 3 has a face that looks like a duck's arse, and that not everyone is taken in by Elon's charms - but hey, each to their own. 😉

Tesla's quality in construction and interior cannot hold a candle to these cars. They're ahead in battery tech but that's about it.

Volvo even just because BMW = good chance to be driven by cripple, I don't want to be in BMW family of stupid and ignorant drivers. Volvo = peace, comfort, respect, safety, besides its stylish car

What a disrespect for the BMW to be compared with Volvo... Volvo bankrupted twice. Ones as itself and then as part of Ford. Now as Geely it looks a bit better but still not at that level. And those 388hp are managed with bigger boost, what will dramatically lower the economy and reliability by driving fast. Also the handling doesn't match the power, as said in this video. If you want even faster hybrid car just buy a chip tuning for your BMW

Kmn Dmt You can get remaps for the Volvo too. The Volvo Polestar1 has 619hp and 738tq and it's based off the same motor that is in the S60.

@@willriley1619 yeah by adding another electric motor lol, the engine tuning is the same as s60 polestar. And why are you comparing it to a 150k car, for that price people would rather go for a 911 turbo. Volvo make good engines yes but objectively still far behind the Germans, so pls don't push it

    • @willriley1619
      @willriley1619 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@syc92 depends what you consider good engines. I'd take a Volvo engine any day over a German engine for reliability. I was trying to show that these T8s have potential. If they only had the aftermarket performance parts available that BMW have

@@willriley1619 this generation of drive e engine so far has been reliable yes, and it is an innovative design no doubt, but in terms of potential people has been tuning it without much success, Volvo themselves has already pushed it to a certain limit if u get the twin charged with polestar software optimization. Whereas B48/58 honestly has tons of potential, granted the piston is not as strong as it should and the cylinders have uneven wearing issue (which shows Volvo's reliable built), but you still cannot deny that B48 has a much greater potential than drive-e especially mounted on a BMW chassis. And no remapping the ecu on both doesn't increase hp by much, Volvo is at its' limit with polestar optimization and B48 might be able to give u an extra 30-40hp with the chance of breaking the piston, not the proper way to tune a car I must say.

    • @syc92
      @syc92 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@willriley1619 oh and the limiting factor of the 330e is its gearbox, the 3rd gen zf 8hp used in the car can only take 450nm of torque, BMW mounted their electric motor before the gearbox so they definitely have to detune the engine to not exceed the design limit. So while it is theoretically possible to tune it to 400hp like the t8, the amount of work you need to do is just not worth it, I'll just go for the m340i if that's the case.

The decision is very simple to make. If you want something premium, you buy the BMW. If you prefer Chinese scrap trying to look premium, you go with the Volvo.
I have owned a 2020 Volvo until very recently, so don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about!

I don't get why the old boys of the car industry are putting so much effort into hybrid cars. It's the worst of both worlds; either an electric motor and battery pack towing a combustion engine, gearbox and fuel tank it doesn't need, or a combustion engine, gearbox and fuel tank towing a battery pack and electric motor it doesn't need. Twice the complexity, twice as much to go wrong, twice as much to maintain. Just get a Tesla Model 3! Less cost, lower maintenance, less emissions, less tax, lower running costs, better residuals, better performance and way cooler. These old school manufacturers have been made to look like a bunch of dinosaurs by Tesla!

    • @dstfno

Because driving full electric isn't an option for all people yet. The world is not ready and the old school manufacturers are still selling 4 times the amount of cars Tesla does.
