  • Thanks for tuning in to another of my MG/EV videos.
The MG4 seems to be a great package and shows signs of very good efficiencies and that's not even touching on its price.
Having tested the vehicle in a mixed driving environment and it's ability to charge from 10-80%, today, I take my MG4 SE Standard Range on a 70mph/112kph motorway range test depleting the battery from 100% to just 2% to gather data on this brand new vehicle.
I was intrigued to see how the LFP 50kWh (useable) battery pack would deal with long-distance at 70mph/112kph speeds and how the efficient bespoke EV architecture of the MG4 would play its part.
I hope you enjoy this video and the data I provide.
If you do, please drop a like to help the video reach more people and a sub to my channel would be fantastic!

Thanks for another great video on the MG. We did a similar journey on 13th November when we were in the UK visiting family (we live in France). We went from Clun in Shropshire to Exeter, clocking 165 miles in the e-Niro. We started at 100%, arrived with 33% on a 64 kWh battery. This equates to 42.88 kWh of power use. I work in km having lived in France for a long time so the car is set up for kWh/100 km..we did just over 16 kWh/100 km for the that trip which was also on the M5 for a lot of the time doing between 110 -120 kph. This translates to 3.8 miles/kWh and tallies pretty well with the SOC % on arrival and power used. The Kia and the Hyundai Kona are famous for their efficiency which has been proved in many tests, coming second only to Tesla who are still the reigning champs of efficiency with the M3 and Y it would seem. I would have thought the MG4 with its lower profile and being a bit lighter would be a bit better than 3.2 m/kwh but there are so many variables when calculating efficiency. FYI on our way home through France on the much smoother, faster autoroutes where we tend to drive at 120-130 kph we did 19.5 kW/100 km into a strong headwind for 435 km...so that was 3.2 miles/kWh...Great to see the MG4 doing so well in UK sales. We have an MG concessionaire opening in Poitiers soon so expect to see more MG EVs on the roads in France.

Thanks so much for the comment and joining in with the chat. The Korean 400v cars are absolute beats with efficiency. 42.88 kWh for 165 miles is really good. What time of year was that? Some really good stats on your travels. I wonder how the Niro EV compares with its tweaks. Not sure if it’s heavier.
That’s great news about MG presence in France. I do think this car is really the closest thing for more adoption. However you do have quadrocycles like the ami in abundance int he cities. I saw one during my first 40 mile efficiency test in a lay-by. It’s on the video. Thanks again for tuning in

@@stuart_thomas Good to hear from you Stuart. The videos are great with lots of information. We did the Shropshire to Exeter run this month, November 13th I think it was. Will be keeping my eyes open for the MG4, the only MG I’ve seen is the ZS being used as a taxi in Bordeaux. We live 60 km south of Poitiers, middle of nowhere place where nothing rusts and 1990’s and even 1980s cars are still used as daily drives. You’re welcome to check out my channels ‘Kia e-Niro Diaries’ is from when I first got the car in March 2019...Thanks to IT incompetence I could no longer post to that one and more recent postings are on ‘Kia e-Niro Diaries Encore’. Really interested to see how the MG4 copes with the miles over the time you have it.

Hi Stu, I'm new to your channel and currently running an MG ZS EV. I drive like a granny and am getting 14.5 kw/hrs per 100 kms. Current temps are on average 6°c.
I really liked the way you gave info from the cars' screens throughout the trip. I rarely drive on autoroutes but when I do it's usually at about 100 kph (about 62 mph) and I'm getting 280-300 kms (about 190 mls) on a full charge, which works for me just fine.

Hi Stu, great video, and as others have said, I love the continuous specs throughout the journey. It's nice to know that the first 50% of battery gave the same miles as the 2nd 50% so you can trust that it's roughly linear. Sounds obvious, but think about the fuel gauges on conventional cars, you almost never had half the range left when the fuel gauge read half!
It would be great to see the same test done at 60mph instead of 70mph, I was astonished how much more fuel i used at 70 than 60 to cover the same distance in my 2015 Peugeot 308 (62mpg at 60mph)

Thanks for this Stuart. I have an MG4 Trophy on order so was very encouraged to watch your review. It's my second EV. I started three years ago with a Peugeot e208 but decided I need a bit more range and luggage space.
As has been said below, this video suggests the range predictor on the MG website is pretty accurate. They say 160 miles for motorway driving in the SE with a standard battery. Your experience (156.5 with 4 miles left) is almost the same as this.
The WLTP figure is a bit misleading as it isn't designed to give a range in the real world. It is a standardised test to support comparison between different vehicles. It is a relative value and the absolute figure can only be achieved if you mimic the test conditions. The biggest difference is that it is conducted in a laboratory and not on the open road.
I'm very happy with electric driving. Range anxiety seems to be something that mainly affects ICE drivers. Most people quickly adapt to little and often charging at home which is more appropriate for an EV.

Thanks for this - I found it quite interesting and rich with valuable information. We have much larger distances in Australia, and given the charging times, and infrequency of charging locations at present, this MG would pretty much be a vehicle that makes only occasional trips outside a city and even then not venturing far at all. That doesn't mean I found the results disappointing, nor that I see the car as deficient in any way: it seems a fine vehicle and is likely to find excellent acceptance over here where MG is doing very well, all things considered. I'm aware that there is a larger battery option - you've mentioned it in another video, but even that would make interstate driving something of a trial at present.

Nice that you mentioned all setup and no aircon and you preheated the battery before leaving. It would be interesting if you redid the test and same route (outside temperature the same as well) with aircon on at 20 or 22 degrees Celsius. You could also do this when its 0 or colder outside so see the difference in range and even repeat it in spring at 20 degrees. Also you could add cost of charging if you used standard energy rate for electricity in the UK.

Hi Stuart. Your videos are probably the most comprehensive information for the MG 4 SE SR. I received mine just before Christmas. How do you use the battery preconditions. Also, I am charging on a granny cable, can I precondition the car before use as I guess that takes more energy than can be provided by the granny cable?

Hi John thanks for tuning in and the wonderful feedback it’s greatly appreciated.
Preconditioning should be used on two occasions… and hour before you set off on a long journey when it’s very cold. You can do this in the app or the car, either by doing it manually an hour beforehand or program it using the scheduling feature….or secondly, before using a DC fast charger (to help warm the battery up). You can preheat with a granny charger just be mindful the car is likely to receive very little charge at the same time but at least it won’t be at the expense of the battery %.

It is funny just 1 day after you upload this video. I have to do a 70km+ round trip to another town plus a 24km on SR model 3 before hitting the supercharge to avoid the sad fate of stranded by the high way while running out of juice. All in all, I put down a 170km trip and burn through 51kwh capacity at between -4 to -2c with winter tire and wider tread. So by calculation, i can only manage 40.7% WLTP cycle. There is not much rang anxiety, but more for carful trup planning

Hello from Australia! First up love the channel - just started looking at a new car and it’s currently a toss up between the Corolla Cross Hybrid vs the MG 4 both in their base model configurations.
So I’ve been doing a lot of googling and ended up stumbling across your channel and really enjoyed watching your videos about the MG4.
Just a question though in your experience would you say that the base MG4 during an average day temp of say about 21-22 degrees Celsius be able to reach a distance of 225km on a single full charge, whilst driving at hwy speeds around 110kmph / 70mph?
And if I’ve understood this correctly if it’s hotter, the battery will give better efficiency correct? I say this because running the a/c in the Aussie summer should be offset by the heat right?

But when we did have the motor home I drove her at 60 mph, I now just drive my EV at that speed! I once got stuck in a large traffic jam coming home from a trip up north resulting in the forecasted mileage that was shown would not get us home, yet we crawled along the road at 5 mph, I turned my main lights off and used my side lights, by the time we had travelled ten miles at a crawl, I then noticed I had enough millage to get us home, in which we did with 2 miles to spare! Which proves - The slower you drive - the more millage you will achieve! When we bought our EV, it stated that I would receive 184 mile range, it was winter months then bought and the millage showed only 138, then summer was apon us and we were shown 192? My message to EV drivers is - give yourself plenty time to where you are going and enjoy the drive and our beautiful country surroundings and smile as you watch those in a hurry wiz past your side window! Nice video , Good information. One issue it was only 11c temperature outside. Most people including myself would have the heater climate on. So maybe do the same test with the climate set to a average of 21c depending how good the heater is I know some cars need to be set to 23c. Also it would be nice if it was in comfort mode / normal mode. As every Ev I’ve owned the heater is rubbish when cold outside if you put the car in Eco mode.
And one other point unless you charge the car up over a few days it will not be £0.05p per kw to fill up to 100% as it will only put in around 40kw max in the 6 hours.
I like the look of the MG4 & it’s good value for money.
I was thinking of buying one until I test drove it.
Nothing too bad , But I like strong regeneration braking & the MG4 I drove you could hardly feel it compared to my i pace. The second issue was only a 7kw onboard charger. They missed a trick by not putting in a 11kw or like Nissan a 22kw come on MG or if it costs a lot more at least make it an option because when you go shopping if the DC is being used & a 22kw is available it will put a decent amount of charge in while you shop & in North wales there are a few 22kw on the beach front so in two hours on the beach you could whack 40kw in instead of maybe 12 kw make a big difference & could mean you don’t need to stop on the way home to charge. Also either fit a heat pump or make it a option as this would increase range in the colder months & make the car more efficient & cheaper to run long term.
O & one annoying thing the sills are wise & you catch your leg on them , there needs to be a door rubber fitted as these get filthy.
But for the price it pretty unbeatable

It's an interesting question and I'm actually testing the different regen settings as some drivers have reported better efficiencies with less re-gen. As the car on the test was using the adaptive cruise, I'm not too concerned but i do intend to retest the route with the new lower temperatures and adaptive regen may suit best.
Battery conditioning is also an interesting one. I do believe because of its unique consumption is would be hard to tell with all the other variables whether it's better or not. But if I go by what the car suggests, it's for 'pre-conditioning' and the energy it uses is great for preparing for an occasion like cabin heating/warming the battery for charging. But it's worth testing at some point. So much to learn!

Thanks for the video Stuart, very informative.
Did you check how accurate the speedometer is on the MG?
I think 160miles (about 260km) cruising at an indicated 70mph (112kph) is a very useful range. That would cover the vast majority of my trips, and for the odd longer trip, stopping after 1.5 to 2 hours to charge (have a stretch, t & p) would be be acceptable, even for work trips.

I got my SE SR MG 4 just before Christmas and am still getting a feel for the range during the winter months. I did a trip recently of 40 miles using exactly 30 percent battery which calculates out to around a range of 133 miles. The car indicated 3.7 miles per kWh for the trip which for a 50 kWh battery should give more like 180 miles. Does the car not tally up the energy used by the ancillaries. I don't understand the discrepancy.

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi john congrats on your MG SR.
That sounds more or less accurate although one of my tests on the channel at an average of 3c I used 25% battery for 40 miles with mixed driving 70mph motorway (mostly). However, depending on your driving style, weather and road types this can be either side of those figures. The 3.7 mi pkWh sounds a little inflated but as the range (guess-o-metre) is based on a mix of previous driving and current driving that may explain that.
In situations like that I’d pay attention to your energy consumption screen on the main infotainment screen and actually look at how much energy you have used. Over the 40 miles for example you can take how many kWh you used for driving and ancillaries and that way work out your average usage for 50kWh pack.
      I hope this helps

Do note that there is a massive difference between doing 60 and 70. It's because of a thing called back-EMF, the motor starts working as a generator as well as a motor at high revolutions. It's not a linear thing, it starts at about 55 (depending on the gearing) and gets rapidly worse.

    • @stuart_thomas

@@stuart_thomas Ok, the principle is this.
When an ideal motor (no losses) is stationary, 100% of the power is converted into useful work (moving the car) in the first instant of acceleration. When the same ideal motor [generator] is being turned very fast without power, 100% of the motion is transformed into electricity.
So, it follows that when the motor is turning under power there will be a transition from powering to generating with lots of constants and one variable, rpm.
The maths isn't too bad actually but pretty much all cars have motors of the order of 100kW and whatever gear ratio they all use, plus the generic tyre size - that all cars are roughly similar in terms of their speed constant, torque constant and velocity constant. The upshot is that the brand doesn't matter and that back-EMF tends to become significant over 55 in all cars.

Range seems acceptable for 70mph motorway miles, remembering that this is the standard range MG4. It works out at almost exactly 10p a mile for those of us on a standard tariff of 33p a kWh, which compares well with an economical diesel that at 60mpg would cost 14p a mile at current diesel prices (1.8812, according to RAC). So, a diesel achieving 60mpg costs 40% more per mile at 70mph than an MG4 charged at home on a standard tariff.
I'll take that, accepting that if my journey is longer than 160 miles then anything over 160 miles would cost up to 30p a mile, if charging at an expensive public Rapid charger, such as an Osprey charger charging £1 a kWh. So, the MG4 SE SR charged on a mixture of standard tariff home charging and the most expensive tariff public charging would cost exactly the same as a 60mpg diesel car over a 200 mile journey. Anything beyond that and the 60mpg diesel would be more economical for that journey.
Of course we know that many 60mpg diesels will not achieve that economy at 70mph and we know that the vast majority of journeys are less than 200 miles and the diesel will be at least 40% more expensive for any journeys less than 160 miles.

Had hoped you may have put on the Wh/km as Bjorn does with all his tests as well at least as an option to your miles per kWh as well. When you had Power Usage up it was in kWh which isn't a measure of power, kW is a measure of power so bit confused, sorry just at the end you mention power used when it's energy used in reality. Sorry I've seen alot of EV tests from many TH-camrs including EV journalists, not trying to be a complainer just confused with some of your video. Good test though, be interesting to see this test in summer in 20-25c temps.

Thanks for tuning in and the comments. Some great suggestions which I always welcome. I agree with some of your points, I think there’s many TH-camrs/journalists who misreport and I love Bjorn’s videos 😊
I use the car speed as it’s good to keep this relative to the consumer. GPS speed vs Car indicated speed will always differ for many reasons and not just tyre size.
There’s so many variables to consider, it’s hard to keep it laboratory controlled condition and I can’t finance that I’m afraid. Even Bjorn’s testing is subjective and doesn’t mean it’s correct that’s just his way, and I’m first to say I like that.
There’s always going to be what if… or shouldn’t you have… it’s best to do in my opinion is a middle ground between data driven information and not confusing the consumer. That’s why my efficiency tests are always done on the same route in both conditions, I try to find a route that covers most bases for the general consumer. Some will exceed this some won’t. I don’t think for example Nordic roads resemble uk roads.
The car tells me as I point out ‘total power consumption’ and ‘driving power’ so if this is incorrect MG have it incorrect too, but I’ll double check it as I don’t like to be factually incorrect. I’ll only report what can’t lie and is in view for the viewer to see.
Thanks again for your comments, i hope you’ll comment again and yes really looking forward to seeing how LFP behaves in the summer months

Being a 70 mph test the result is 152 miles (240 km?) as per the odometer (but it should have been a gps test).

As much as GPS is correct as the crow flies, it's also good to keep this relative to the consumer. There are so many variables and each car is different. If there was an overwhelming request for GPS speed then I'll definitely consider it. Thanks for tuning in and commenting ; )

The car is pretty handsome with techy specs but no rear camera ?

The Trophy model has a rear camera.

It sure is a good looking car. No rear camera on this model but I rarely use the one on my wife’s Tesla M3 which has a higher resolution camera. The lens curvature can be slightly underestimating and prefer the sensors instead. Saying that there’s great 3rd party systems.

Very interesting. Thank you. I would always have the a/c on, but the range here wouldn’t be enough for me as I have a friend who lives 200 miles away. I’m waiting until they build a cheap electric car with a safe 400 mile range, until then I’ll stick with a hybrid.

Thanks Richard. I’d be in the same boat with the AC otherwise I’d get it from the family!!! It could be a very long wait for a 400 mile EV. I think charging will always win over range as the cost of batteries is too high. I’m not sure my bladder would hold up at 200 miles 😂😊

@@stuart_thomas I'd say a 300 mile REAL WORLD range is what I'm waiting for

"as I have a friend who lives 200 miles away" Sure, but how often do you visit them? Adding 50 miles of range at a motorway fast charger would take you 18 minutes at a cost of about £9. If you have to do that once every month or two, it's hardly a dealbreaker. The UK average daily mileage for cars is only 20 miles/day, after all.

On the motorway if you are not bothered about getting there quickly I recommended just staying behind a lorry at a constant 55-60 mph and you'll get more than the miles showing on the trip computer.

With Long Range version in Summer at 55 mph, the result would be Miles apart !
