  • Hey guys and thanks for tuning in to my video.
    I've now owned my MG4 SE Standard range for 1 month. I really wanted to give it a general review at the beginning of ownership but felt I need to drive this car for at least a month before I can honestly give a verdict on it. So I give my honest opinions in a likes/dislikes format and my final conclusion.

    Great review Stuart! I particularly liked your screen/software review, very few reviewers give any time to this. I’d like a vid simply covering ALL the software/screen/app workings. I find it’s important to know what is available and what the car can do, rather than finding out months down the line that some bugbear I had with the car could have been sorted via the settings 😮. Looking forward to more 👍🏻

    Thank you for taking the time to talk about the infotainment system, I feel like this is an area most other reviews don't touch on too much, and you're the first to talk about the stereo quality! For me it's a small but important detail as I'm looking at getting an MG4 but will be transitioning away from a car with Bose speakers. So to hear the MGs are still decent is reassuring.

    Great review, I took delivery of a SE LR last week, but had to order floor mats and a type II charge cable, as these are options. Not a big deal, but worth remembering. Also one of my worries was the lack of rear wiper, however the aerodynamic of the vehicle are such that once you hit 60MPH the flow of the air seems to blow the rain off the rear window. Agree with Stuart, saving the user preferences for driving mode, lane assist would be really handy. Let's hope a OTA software update fixes it.

    Thanks for the insightful video, Stuart. We have an MG4 trophy on order (can't wait!!) - one question - do you miss the rear screen wiper? I was surprised it didn't have one, but since ordering ours I've noticed that many new cross-overs etc. don't have one either (Tesla Model Y case in point) - are the aerodynamics really good enough to keep the rear screen clear, or is is simply a cost-saving?

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for tuning in and the great question. I think it’s a bit of both. Most new SUVs and hatchbacks having in my opinion very poor visibility through the rear window. Many cars now have 360/rear cameras and obvs sensors to cover bases.
      I’ve been used to the Tesla model 3 without a rear wiper for nearly 3 years. Apart from the very odd occasion (heavy rain while reversing) it’s not an issue but I can understand that it may be a cause for issue for others. There is some sprays you can apply to help it bead off quickly. Once you’re up to speed or have pre-heated on a cold morning any obstacles disappear quickly. I hope this helps you.
      Thanks again for tuning in.

      @logicalChimp ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The MG4 rear looks too raked for aero to keep the rear glass clear (it worked on my old RX7, but it had a far longer / flatter rear window).
      The reason for removing the rear wiper is less about cost-saving (as I understand it), and more about aero - smooth air flow *leaving* the car has a far bigger impact than good aero at the front of the car... and the rear wiper is a major element in messing up that smooth air-flow.

      Hi And thanks for tuning in and the great feedback. I have a SE like you have ordered (i understand you may have got jt now so congrats) and mine is permanently off. So I never have an issue to deal with. If you do want to use lane assist I’d suggest to only use on motorways and activate TJA (traffic jam assist) which seems to manage lane keeping better but if I’m honest, it’s more hassle than it’s worth and adaptive cruise does the job nicely. Once MG manage this better in software I may entertain it.

      I drove 60 miles back from the dealer on a mix of motorway and country roads and the LKA didn't bother me until I got off the A roads - on our little winding roads it either wanted to put me in the middle of the road in the face of oncoming or push me into the boggy shoulder! to sink like a stone. It is quite aggressive and jerky whereas what isn't really even needed is a gentle cut in gradually pushing you (preferably without feeding back to your hands which naturally fight the push as if you hit something!

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stephen thanks for tuning in and the positive feedback. It’s a good question but you could ask the same question of any EV. I thinks it’s safe to say many have had their issues since arriving but have also overcome them.
      MG, so far since electrification, have been going very strong and there’s many use cases of vehicles exceeding 80k plus without issues and have stood the test. There’s also not many manufacturers giving their cars more than 3 years warranty. Even Tesla only give you a 3 year/50k warranty (not inc battery/drive train). I have a M3 LR and it’s 40k in and the heat pump and charging port are being replaced Friday.
      Another question you could ask is how long do you intent to keep the car? The drive train and battery is covered for 7 years so I wouldn’t worry.
      The only thing I’m concerned about at the moment is how long the rear tyres will last as I love ripping round in it 😈, it’s a blast to drive.
      On a serious note though, I think if anything is likely to be an issue it will come in the first 2 years but it’s generally a solid car. Have you test driven one?

    Hey Stu,
    Another great video!
    It’s funny the things manufacturers do - dropping the central light does look like a bit of a screw up! I liked your solution!
    Also, the lack of mats is a bit annoying, but obviously easily fixed - and at the price, well - can’t really complain.
    When ours arrives it will be our first EV.
    I’d be very interested in a couple of video comparisons - ICE vs EV - pros and cons & MG4 vs Tesla. The 2nd is more just out of curiosity.
    I hope there’s an Over the Air update to provide ‘save’ functionality for driver custom settings - a funny miss by MG!
    I guess we have a lot to thank Tesla for in paving the way for this type of EV.
    Congrats again on your great content. Best of luck with the channel & looking forward to ours eventually arriving.

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Graham, congrats on taking a leap into EV life. When's delivery?
      Yeah, I agree, a few oddities but for the most of the issues nothing software updates can't fix. That's probably one positive to EVs, the car will get better.
      Definitely an MG4 vs Tesla M3 video coming very soon, probably over Christmas. There's some great comparisons, essentially you're also comparing a new EV vs one which has been on the UK roads for nearly 4 years and a couple more in the US and yes, Tesla were the first disrupter and their philosophy behind what driving and using a car should be like is revolutionary.
      It's a great idea to compare vehicles, hard to compare EV vs ICE, there's just so many variables unfortunately, if it was MG ZS vs ZS EV that would be better in terms of apples for apples. Even though we have gone all EV now, I do step into ICE vehicles which included a new Audi A3 yesterday and I couldn't get over how this premium brand was using components which in my opinion were no better than MG4 and don't get me started on gears and a clutch ; )
      Thanks so much for tuning in and your support for the channel it does really mean the world.

      @@stuart_thomas Coming from a model S another pro over the Tesla is the panels actually align properly. When one car is £88k and the other mid 20's its hard to see why the cheap one can get it right when the other couldn't.
      The Tesla was a lot faster, had a lot more space and was quieter and more comfy. Its a lot larger car so I think those are pretty much given.
      It certainly was not worth 3-4 times as much as one of these.
      One big tick I can give Tesla is the chargers. I never worried about range and almost never planned where to charge before leaving. I sent the Tesla back because I couldn't live with the constant problems and went plug-in hybrid because I now do very little mileage day to day but with the odd 300+ mile jaunt in there. I have the same SE base model and agree it's a great car for the price and reminds me of my boy racer days but for me it was a Renault 5 Turbo. The only thing I find is visibility out the back is not great and when you are reversing at night I'm not happy with not seeing much and having to depend on the proximity sensors, would have been happy to pay the extra for the reversing camara. I did think not having a rear wiper would be a problem but you can't see a lot our of there anyway so don't miss it much. Only done one long trip where I've used fast chargers and only got max charging rate of 48kW but guess that the temperature was a bit cold at the start of November at charger I had a Tesla parked next to me charging at 130kW but it just means you can savor you coffee and cake. Changed to this car after a 9 month wait for a Trophy MG ZS and I'm very glad I did, think I would have had the higher specked model if it had been available and wondering if I should put an order in for one now. I don't mind the lane keeper assist and some times enable it with ACC when on the fast roads but wouldn't use it on slower roads. Great car great price even my petrol head brother was impressed, for me there is no going back to ICE I just love the way these cars drive.

      Couldn’t agree more with you. I loved the Renault 5, will be great to see the electric one soon. MG4 is a great car. I’ve experienced the rear view camera on the ZS EV and having a Tesla M3 which also has a rear camera (and no wiper), the resolution/quality level is miles apart which is why I wasn’t too fussed about missing out on a reversing cam. Plus, I trust the sensors.
      What state of charger were you when at 48kW?
      I jumped in a 1 year old Audi A3 30 yesterday and although I have no issue driving an ICE car, the whole gear box and start button seems very yesterday and inconvenient. I also couldn’t believe how the interior finish was no better than the MG4, I think MG have done a fine job!

    Great car, and very useful review! Thank you very much! 👏👏
    I have couple questions, if you can help me: when you use the adaptative cruise control in the city, and you have a vehicle in front of you and you both come to a red light, the first vehicle stops and then I think that your MG stops right behind it.
    When the light changes to green, does your MG reiniciate automatically, or you have to press the "gas" pedal?
    I own a Volkswagen Golf 7, and if the vehicle that is in front of me takes less than three seconds, my car begins automatically. If the other vehicle is stopped more than 3 seconds, I have to press "RES" in the steering wheel or acelerate a little bit.
    Also, if the car is steering for you on the road and you take your hands off from the steering wheel, how many seconds does the car drive before telling you to take the steering wheel? My Volkswagen only drives 13 seconds, and then I have to drive, or the system disengages.
    Thank you very much, ant please excuse my English, as I am from Spain 😉

      V2L is already included cause here I have seen someone building his own V2L adapter for small money and was able to charge a car, a Aiways 5 or a grinder or big saw and also via a detour the house by using the V2L to run a bench power supply with 60V DC that flowed into a small 600W usual solar panel inverter connected to the grid. There is no chance to synchronise the V2L sine wave to the grid therefore the detour.
      Yes, a huge amount of losses but better you have such solution with even high losses than having no power at all.
      This means the high voltage DC will be transformed to 230V AC and then runs through the V2L connetctor into the bench supply to be converted to 60V DC, from where it will be fed into the inverter to be converted into 230V AC
      Each time you read the word converted you can add a loss of 10% and so you might expect 70% at max arriving in the house but 70% of 2300 W out of a 51 kWh is still a lot more than anyone else usually has in case of a black out or grey out or what so ever. The cable is sold by MG for about 400€ or more but it costs a fraction to build such cable. Just the plug, the cable, a resistor and 3 x 230V plug was needed among ferrules and some other smaller pieces. I guess less than 75€ incl. VAT

    Hi, thanks for this review. Just ordered a MG4 Essence (in NZ same as the Trophy I guess with the 64 battery and extra tech) for my wife. A couple of things of concern is the fact the use the NMC battery instead of LFP, which is odd when the base model uses it - rather interesting decision by MG. I would've thought using LFP would be a better selling point across the range. Secondly, with regards to interior lighting for the back seats - would putting in brighter interior lights in the front help illuminate the rear? Also in your photo of the interior at night with the blue ambience lighting, is that standard or something you added yourself? Thanks.

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Congrats on your order.
      LFP is fantastic but has lower charge/discharge cycles. The biggest benefit of NCM chemistry is charging speeds. Without sophisticated preheating like on a Tesla, it wouldn’t make sense using LFP for a larger battery. It just wouldn’t be ‘future proofing’ the model. Trophy/Essence will achieve 140kW charging speeds even at higher state of charge like 50%.
      On the subject of lighting, you can install brighter LEDs in the front, but it would still struggle to illuminate the rear of the car. The ambient lighting I have is just an LED set run from the 12v socket in the front. You can see me fit these in my festive gift challenge.
      Many thanks for tuning in

      Hi Peter.
      My car has a useable 50kWh battery pack. The long-range 61.7kWh.
      I usually get at least 140-160 miles on a full charge. Although i do road trips and use public charging (which I have had no issues with (even some free charging)) 95% of my charging is done at home. It's no more than £6 to charge my car from empty to full although I don't think I often ever have a whole charge to replenish.
      Home charging is the most convenient and can be done overnight or in the day when you're busy sleeping or working and can be as cheap as 12p p/kWh and public charging can start from 28p p/kWh up to as much as £1 p/kWh although the cost usually represents the power of the charger but I'd say on average most ultra-fast charging is in the 70-90p realms. Although it's not very often that you replenish the whole battery, maybe 60% (20-80%).
      There are subscription models which can alleviate charging costs substantially if you do the miles or don't have home charging. Public charging does have its challenges but as someone who quoted me, 'it's better today than yesterday'.
      Hope that helps

Firstly what electricity provider/tariff and charging schedule do you use? We are with Octopus and would probably be looking at Octopus Go giving 4 hours off-peak charging. Secondly, what was the insurance price like? I understand that EV car insurance is likely to be more expensive. Lastly, are there any restrictions on the remote cabin pre-heating? Does it have to be plugged in, does it depend on how much charge the battery is sitting at. Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks.......... Mark

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, thanks for tuning in and the comment. I to use octopus and utilise their ‘Go’ tariff which for the most part is sufficient to charge the car. If you get the SE standard range spec you can charge to 100% regularly which helps with planning your drive each day/week.
      In terms of insurance, it really depends on many factors ie what car are you comparing it too or what other EVs are you comparing to etc. I moved from a VW touran and it was like for like cost wise but I also know as i got mine very early there was little insurers to choose from.
      No issues with preheating the cabin. If it’s plugged in the car will not use it’s battery for the energy but it will if it’s not plugged in. I do believe this is available as long as the battery doesn’t go under 20%.
      I hope this helps😊

      Hi Keith thanks for tuning in and the positive comments and congrats on your order. It’s a fantastic car, even after 3 months I can’t say too much negative about it. That said, it does have a couple of issues which shouldn’t be on a new car but they will be resolved by the warranty once a couple of parts are finally in stock. I also have a Tesla M3 and I have had more issues with that car than this MG so I wouldn’t worry too much. Being in FB groups have their advantages and places for informative suggestions but it’s also the first place for rants and negativity. I’m waiting for mg to iron out all the problems before I consider one.
    Have you experienced being locked in? Or loss of power when it’s cold? Are you getting any more than 180 mile range due to the cold weather as this seems to be the average? Are you finding it very costly to run when using public chargers?

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Dave thanks for watching and the comment. No issues as yet. Haven’t been locked in. Charging at home currently costs be £2.40 for a full charge. I have the standard battery and it’s 25% less efficient in sun zero winter. So I’m looking at 160 miles on a full charge. This battery pack is the LFP chemistry to its fine to charge it to 100%.
      I do use public chargers, but 90% from home. If I do use one it’s during a long road trip. They can be expensive but there’s lots which are cheaper and some which are free, just use the available apps to filter.

    Awaiting my trophy (Camden Grey) in April, any thoughts on why MG use LiFeP in SR and NICM in LR? Also the real life issues with the "oil leak", buckled undertray, difficult software updates and apparently very poor MG Customer Service? Thanks for the vid, very useful as are your others!

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ken, thanks for tuning in and congrats on your MG4 order.
      In terms of battery chemistry choice, LFP is becoming widely used amongst many ‘standard’ or ‘entry level’ EVs. It’s cheaper than NMC chem and can handle thermal issues better and in turn allows automakers drive costs and price tag down. NMC is lighter and more energy dense so makes sense for larger packs or premium/performance vehicles.
      It’s a brand new EV so inevitably there will be software bugs and perhaps it’s easy to say MG may have underestimated these but I’m not concerned as they will get ironed out.
      I’ve had mixed experience with service. I’ve used two dealerships, one I bought the car through who were a waste of time and my local who I really rate and have taken over all my warranty claims including the replacement rear motor undertray and a replacement dash. Apart from that it’s a wonderful car and I would still recommend one as for price, there’s not a comparison in the new car market😊

    A shame the RHD don't get a heat pump (maybe they put it where the RHD stuff is).
    A couple of ergonomic questions:
    1. How is the window arm rest height (the sill and the actual armrest). This varies of course on where you set the seat /steering wheel heights and your height.
    2. Room in the footwell (I have big feet) and are there left & right foot rests?
    3. How good is the fresh air vent? It looks small and low down. Can you direct air up to the top of your head?
    4. If you fold the back seats down do they go flat (usually requires lifting the seat base) and is it flat right through, or a lip where the seats are? Is there a lip at the boot entrance?

      Hi Bill, thanks for tuning in and commenting. It is a big shame about lack of heat pump. The UK should have these for sure and last 8 weeks are good example. The tests for arms are pretty good (for me anyway, I’m 5ft 8” but small legs taller torso😊). Lots of room at the pedals but always worth checking yourself beforehand. Air vents are generally good and don’t find any issues. Of course the summer will be a good test also. There is a lip when you fold the rear seat. I’ll demonstrate on my next MG4 video soon.

I'll be commuting 110 miles, at 60mph, 3 days a week along the A3, so I'm keen to establish what the real world range will actually be. I'm taking a Trophy for an extended test drive next week as my back twinged during the 20min test drive, and therefore the lack of lumbar support concerns me..... any thoughts please Stuart?

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for tuning in and commenting - in these much colder conditions you’re looking at a 25% reduction with all the creature comforts switched on. However, I will say you can help this by driving speeds, eco mode etc. driving 60 will make a big difference. I’d think any spec/battery size will be sufficient for your journey. Unfortunately, lumbar could be an issue as I’m not sure if it’s adjustable on the trophy spec, but you can always add a 3rd party accessory. My wife uses one sometimes in our Tesla model3 sometimes and that’s got adjustable lumbar.
      Take time on your test drive to get your seat and driving position comfortable. I know it can all feel rushed but just take your time. It’s a lot of money to part with so make it your terms😉😊

      Software is good (it will only get better) compared to VW and many ICE cars. It can lag a little but you get used to it but it doesn’t make it bad.
      No problem with hearing and remote hearing from the app.
      I find the seats very comfortable and so far durable. If you go for Trophy you get faux leather seats.
      My wheels come with plastic caps as standard.
      I use apple car play and most of the time I use it it works fine. It can disconnect but I put it down to my 3rd party cable. Having said that, software updates will sort these kind of issues. Every car suffers with software disadvantages but is quickly sorted.

      That all sounds really good! I think I'll trade in the wheel caps for some light weight rims instead, but that's not a problem.
      I think my only 'concern' is the software… aside from Tesla, I haven't seem many car manufacturers actually improve the software a lot. Volkswagen/Vauxhall and their ID-series took ±2 years before a new CEO admitted their software was terrible, so it will take another 1 year at least to solve their issues. And I was also looking at the Peugeot e208, which apparently has a horrible app and somewhat "meh" in-car-software. I guess that has always been the same with most car manufacturers 😅

      @@Joram0611 hi Joram, good choice if you can change them to something else that you’d prefer.
      Software in my opinion is a contentious one. I think some of it is managing expectations and another part is realistically understanding what a manufacturer could achieve.
      I have a Tesla and they have lead the way with infotainment. They’ve raised a bar which was very low. Now everyone has a bit of an expectation that all EVs should be punching above their weight. I think many brands have done well some haven’t. No one will repeat what Tesla have done for a while as they’re a software company as well. Cars with google OS seem the closest. MG4 actually runs an android OS, it’s not going to be as good as google OS but there will be minor changes they can push and this should cover bugs and glitches if they seem apparent. I haven’t heard many complain too much. Coming from a Tesla I’m really shocked how stable and good it is. For a car that’s half the price I think MG have done very well.
      If I was in your shoes, make a choice when you’re happy and confident and don’t do anything if you’re unsure.

    Hi Stuart excellent video, just from our 2 test drives and about an hour or so sitting in and playing with the 2 model trims in the showroom and countless hours online investigating. I have to agree with your conclusions, but really nice to get somebody who has had the car for some time who is confirming most of my initial thoughts. Especially as we went ahead, after a lot of deliberation, and ordered a Spanish (I live in spain now) Fizzy orange Luxury model with the grey/white 2 tone interior option. First EV that ticked ALL (except a marginal one) my absolute minimum requirements for an EV for me to come from the dark side and abandon my diesel.
    I haven't seen any video where the SE SR LPF battery version gets more than 88 kw dc charging at peak, getting a high charge current to a small LPF battery is one of the small number of disadvantages to the chemistry. Thats one of the reasons we went for the Luxury NMC battery as even that is probably only close in reality to one of my mimimums (being able to drive from my home to Madrid 398klm, which we do quite regularly without stopping)(biggest deliberation) but had seen many youtube videos of people, with this model, getting 144kw peak charging and only 25 minutes from 10 to 80% so sort off compensated. Although have told the dealer if MG announce the 77KWH version is going to be introduced in spain in the next 6mths and the price difference isn't rediculous i will change my order.

      I’m so pleased to hear you have taken your time and methodically made the choice for you. It’s a big step.
      I’m very envious that you can choose your interior colours or /trim. The orange is fantastic, it certainly turns heads and will never get old.
      The LFP seems to have its limits currently although I’m hoping software updates (like Tesla did) will allow a better peak once MG have more data. Being able to safely and sensibly charge to 100% is very handy. Saying that, the charging curve is fairly good and consistent throughout to 60%. I’m hoping to get my hands on a LR model soon to test so hopefully I can bring you and many others some more data on charging and ranges. NMC packs are great and the charging is fantastic from what it appears. Anything north of 100kW is really good and as long as the curve is good you’re looking at short stops which I think is the priority for EVs, quick charging.
      I have considered a Q&A kind of live stream where owners and prospective owners or just EV fans can just talk to each other, there’s loads to learn and it doesn’t matter what country you live in.

      I’ve ordered this orange/grey combination in the hope that the interior feels lighter. I’m in France and have been told it’ll be here in March (which would be a 6 months wait).

    Just a quick question, have you ever experienced any rattling or squeaking noise inside while driving? Thinking about buying one, but we had bad experience with Dacia Duster, it was a super car, but around the radio, there was this rattling sound coming from the dashboard, which drove us crazy. Service couldn't fix it, and we ended up changing the car a year on.

      Non at all bab. Only the odd item rolling around in the door bins as they’re not lined with anything. My Tesla m3 rattles more!!!👍

      @Stuart Thomas Thanks for the answer! We just went and tried one out on Saturday in Dublin and put down the deposit right away, we'll have it sometimes in the summer. It was so fun to drive, and we can't wait to have it. We have a Kia Soul, which we completely love. I hope we'll love this one the same.

    I am looking to lease one of these, I was considering pcp because of the claimed 7 year warranty.....but I have been advised this maybe a diminishing warranty, whereby its full warranty for 12m but gradually the warranty covers less? If this is wrong please let me know.

      Thanks for tuning in and the question. I’d recommend reading the MG UK warranty on their website for clarification 👍

      @Stuart Thomas Hi, I downloaded the MG 7 year warranty and I can confirm it is a diminishing warranty. The 7 year only covers paint and a manufacturing default. In fact in the small print some parts are only for 12months and most parts are 36months. So would definitely be leasing if I get one. Hope that helps everyone, Rob

    Looks like a nice car, I'd prefer a front wheel drive version & one with less tech, I don't want to set a car up prior to driving, nor do I want to be distracted from watching the road by it, that's how many crashes happen, physical switches for heating & fan controls make more sense, as you don't have to look at a screen.

      Thanks for tuning Billy and commenting. Don’t get carried away with my geek levels, this is just for making ‘fair’ testing. I just get in and drive. The question about drive is interesting. All of the MG EV products apart from MG4 are front wheel drive and because of the torque in the electric moments the front wheels lose traction which is why they did the right thing with the rear wheel drive here, no slip.

      No traction control then?
      Peugeot E208 does that, also find myself looking for the touch screen controls to adjust heating..
      I love EV's Nice & smooth to drive, I like the way it drives, just feel it should be less distracting.

      Front wheel drive is a downgrade. RWD with a rear motor has all the benefits of red in an ICE vehicle but without the negative aspects due to the weight distribution and powerplant position. The only FWD EVs are mostly developed from ICE or mixed use platforms, most dedicated EVs are RWD or dual motor for good reason.

    Do you get the vehicle to load adaptor with the car? If not where do you get it how much is it? This video was 4 months old did any update sort any of the issues?

      Hi Dave thanks for tuning in. No V2L with the vehicle, you can buy official MG ones for £140ish but there’s many 3rd party ones online for £90. I paid around £90 for mine but it’s no longer available new. Just keep an eye on the max load, mine’s 2.2kWh but you can go all the way up to 7. I’ve only had 2 updates, I think the SE model seems to have escaped many of the software bugs which have been most present on the Trophy. They run different software versions as the Trophy has more pre installed functions and safety add-one but no issues with mine
