      Reduction gearbox oil leaks - Fixed 10 days after
      Inaccurate AC temp reading - non progblem: set temp +5degrees
      Automatic door locking always on - ok for me
      Faulty light sensor - Printed new cover, now is perfect
      No battery preheating available while plugged in and fully charged - This is wrong, it depends on your wallbox/charger. Mine works
      Navigation doesn't show en-route chargers - Mine is Standard version
      Infotainment screen sometimes freezes - Only wait a bit more and it will start
      Radio always turns on - Ok for me
      LKA always on - Three click at start to disable is not annoyng. The Leaf needs every time to accept disclaimer

      Thanks so much for sharing your experience, sounds like you're an early adopter and small annoying things aren't such a problem for you. 🙂 Good call on printing out the new light sensor cover btw, that's smart!
      What I find unfortunate is that while you may not have some of these problems, other owners of the same model MG4 do and they don't have as good a service experience as you. Seems like MG could also work on their consistency a bit.
      Everything seems to have come together nicely in your case, which is great and I'm glad you're enjoying the car. Hopefully MG4 will work on updates and especially on keeping customers informed!

      @@siasek I don't have a MG4 yet picking up the trophy today or tomorrow but believe the LKA is same as the ZS where no you cant turn it off but you can all but disable it, just set it to warn instead if intervene and the warning to vibrate with no volume, all you get then is a very slight vibration of the wheel and thats it.

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The LKA can be turned off in the MG4, but the problem is that the car doesn't remember your settings between rides and you have to redo it every time you get back into the car. Apparently it takes like 4 steps to do it so it's an inconvenience to have to do it every time you get back in the car and if you forget, it's not very safe to do while driving. I've been hearing mixed reviews on the LKA, but there seems to be a consensus that it's really awful if you drive on rural roads, not sooo bad in the city. Either way, I do hope MG comes up with an update to turn it off easier or at least remember the driver settings between drives.
      I hope you enjoy your new ride! Even with these small issues, I think the MG4 it's going to be a really fun drive 😊

    Agree with most of the gripes, but would like to add a few more: 1) The Air Conditioning setting icons are TOO small. 2) My car always starts with internal air circulation - I have to reset it every trip. 3) The 360 camera system should work when you are parking - not just when you reverse, so if you are parking into a space forward in the supermarket it would be great if the sensors at the front made the camera come on! 4) LKA - is really dangerous, if I forget to switch it off I end up gripping the steering wheel anticipating it will try to steer the car off the road 5) The Air conditioning system menu flicks off when you are trying to change settings. Apart from those minor issues, love the car, already done 5300 miles in 7mths and usually go for a spin most evenings - it brings back the joy of driving

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thank you for listing those out! I started compiling a list from the comments here to make a part 2 for this video so I'll add these.
      The 360 camera issue happens in my Citroen as well! And you're right, if they call it a 360° camera than it should cover more than just the rear 🙄 They could at least have a button to switch it on or something if it's not going to work automatically.
      I'm happy you're still enjoying your MG4 despite these shortcomings. It seems to be the consensus among most drivers. And I love that you said it brings back the joy of driving, that's really lovely. Can't say that much about my Citroen unfortunately 😄
      To me it seems like the aggressive LKA is the biggest problem.. sounds kind of dangerous from what I've been reading. Other than that the others seem like one could get used to them, so while it'd still be better if MG just took care of them, I can see why most MG4 owners are still quite satisfied with the car overall.

    Small correction. It's not the pre-heating of the BATTERY that's the problem when the car is connected but not charging, it's the pre-heating (or indeed pre-cooling) of the ACTUAL CAR.
    The MG4 has the facility to get the car's interior to the temperature you want it, if you send that information to it by the app ten minutes before you go. In heating mode, that will defrost an iced-up car that has been sitting in the snow all night. But if you want to do that the morning after you've had the car on charge, you have to get your kit on AND GO OUT INTO THE SNOW to unplug the car, before you can activate that feature. It's more than a slight inconvenience, it negates the entire point. You might as well just open the car and set the heater fan while you're there - you're already cold and wet.
    There are other gripes, I could give you enough for episode 2, but maybe tomorrow at this rate.

      @@siasek There is a rumour that there is a software update that fixes this. But when I took my car to the dealer and asked for this to be looked at (among other things) they didn't do anything, suggesting it was an issue between my car and the app, and since the app was bound to my phone (and I had my phone, not them) there wasn't anything they could do. If it's a big issue for you, I think you should confront your dealer directly, explain that this is a problem these cars have, but that you have heard there may be a fix for it. Insist that he look into it and apply the fix before you get your car.
      For what it's worth, I think this will be fixed. We're going into colder weather in the northern hemisphere now, and there are a lot more of these cars in circulation than there were last winter. Hi Fina, if you used your EV for holidays, would it be an idea to cover you experiences with the charge situation during the holiday periods? It would be especially interesting if you drove it to CZ or else across Europe. I'm still considering an EV but congestion at chargers is one thing that definitely worries me, especially considering I do 90% of my annual km's during the holidays (I bicycle to work).

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I love that idea! Traveling somewhere across Europe would probably be best, since the Citroën would take me across most of CZ on one charge. I will definitely start planning that because it sounds like a lot of fun. Will be a bit easier once the channel starts making a little pocket money 😄
      I'm thinking if you say you bicycle to work now, I assume that means you are not traveling super long distances? In that case, I don't think even congested chargers would be too much of an issue because presumably you wouldn't have to be charging up very often. Plus if you'd have the opportunity to use an AC charger and plug in either at home or at work, you might really have to visit a DC charger only once in a blue moon.
      Personally, I have yet to encounter an overloaded charging station in CZ, can't speak for the rest of Europe of course.. I do think it'll start to be a concern as EVs keep growing in popularity.

    8/9 of these issues are not a problem to me or I have not had the issue. The only one that is is the Lane Keep Assist which I turn off every time.
    I did test drive two other brands of EV before I chose the MG and they have the same problem in that you have to switch LKA off manually each time you start the car.
    I have the MG4 long range and am fairly sure I can just press the unlock button in the front on the driver’s door once the car has got going so the doors are unlocked, or am I wrong that they still only unlock from inside?

      The problem is that all these little small things really add up. Seems like you have to go through a checklist before driving to really be happy. Turn off LKA, unlock doors (if having them locked bothers you), regen level set, drive mode set... a bit annoying isn't it? The car should be able to remember all those settings and behave the way the driver wants it to. It's such a simple software adjustment, I imagine it must really irk for example programmers, who know these issues could be fixed in a matter of seconds 😄

I test drove the ID3, Soul EV, e2008, Model 3, MG5 LR and settled on this for 3 reasons. Its range/rapid charging speeds, driving dynamics, and price per range. I think the MG4 was definitely a great choice. It does have some minor bugs, but seems nothing major, more like growin pains that I trust will get resolved (hopefully soon!). Most importantly, it's a thrill to drive and that's the way it should be. The rest are small things. But it's important to point them out so the manufacturer can address them. It can be very furstrating for people who are detail-oriented.

    Hi - great video, well researched. 3 months into my MG4 I thought I'd give some real world feedback. The Lane Keep Assist does have to be turned off when starting the car because it gets confused and randomly and sharply pulls you to the nearside. It happens on every trip at least once and is scary. When I forgot to turn it off recently it tried to drive me off a motorway - and being a UK smart motorway there was no lane to go into. Air con - you are right - the temperature settings make no sense. I dont care if the lights are on all the time. I like the doors locking having spent a lot of time in the USA it seems normal to me as an anti-car jacking tool. Battery pre-heating has never worked for me, but maybe that's because it is summer (but in the UK tho!). I agree that not having chargers on the map is a big gap - I like the MG4 built in maps - hated the ZS EV version tho.

      The LKA seems really bad from what I've been reading in these comments. It sounds like the most dangerous "safety" features they could have thought of. Someone just commented that it's the same deal with the Fiat 500 e so now I'm curious how many more cars have this issue... sound like I'll be doing some research.
      The automatic lights also seem like a non-issue to me, but I suppose it could annoy some people... luckily it's an easy fix. The AC thing would probably irk me a bit, but I guess once you get used to it it's not sooo bad. The door locking seems normal to me as well... maybe that's my US background speaking too. 🙈

    Thanks, nice round up. No oil leaks here. Internal temperature: not checked with a thermometer, but consistently need to set to around 23-24oC where in previous cars I've set 20-21oC. Radio: doesn't always turn on automatically, mostly it does after it was on last time, some times it does not. Occasionally it turns on when previously it was not... LKA & Emergency Braking: don't have any real issue with this - if you holding the steering wheel and have foot on or hovering over accelerator.. certainly no more than any previous car with LKA and emergency braking functions.Emergency braking function is more of a marketing message - its no where near the braking power available in dry conditions for an emergency stop. Slightly more concerning for a new owner would be the default TJA (Traffic Jam Assist), rather than plain ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) setting when cruise control it set. TJA will steer the car for you (much more agressive than LKA), it even works (quite well) at motorway speeds - just not quite how you'd like it too... The press "Home" button for 10 secs does get used once a fornight or so, previous car you needed to stop, turn it off and then re-start, though for more serious "glitches" that still applies to MG4.

I've heard many people comment on how dangerous it is, stating they have turn it off every time before they start driving, while others have said it's really no big deal... maybe it depends on the type of roads people frequent the most. I haven't really read much feedback about the TJA, except I remember someone mentioning it on one of my videos a couple months back, but he said that it's a pretty good help when sitting in stop and go traffic...

Issue No.12: Warped under tray on early models. No.13: Very Noisy Air Con. No.14: Last used driving mode is not saved. No.15: Last used regenerative setting is not saved.

      From what I gather from other comment, the LKA mainly seems to be an issue on rural roads which may have lots of potholes, unclear lane marking, etc. If you mainly drive in the city, it seems to be reasonable, though perhaps a bit more forceful than necessary.

    Another great detailed video Fina 👍
    I’m pretty sure the oil leak was only an issue for a small number of the very early cars - the ones with the driver monitoring. My car is a 2022 model and it’s not had any leak and I’ve not seen it mentioned on the MG4 forums for months
    I hadn’t noticed about the lack of chargers on the built in sat-nav, I always use Google maps on Android auto
    Can’t say the auto lights bother me, they are on auto and I just leave them
    My radio doesn’t turn on unless it was on when I locked the car
    LKA is really not garbage, it appears to do its job. It should remember the settings you prefer though - same for all driver settings in the MG4. I only turn it off if I am going to drive on a country road with the opportunity to cut some apexes
    Yes, there are gripes with any car, but the main takeaway anyone should have from the MG4 is that it is great fun to drive and excellent value for money

      Thank you! Overall, I agree with you. It's a great value and a nice, fun car to drive, but I certainly don't think it hurts to give a little push back for the sake of further improvements 😊
      As far as the automatic lights go, I agree this is not a big pain...the real issue would be if they weren't turning on when you need them. The way it stands is a minor inconvenience at most.
      The LKA is where I've noticed the most split opinions. I assume this comes down to who spends more time on rural vs urban roads and also just personal experience. One commenter referred to it as Lane Kill Assist, which gave me a good laugh, 😅 but I've heard feedback from several others who agree with you that it's okay, though perhaps a bit more forceful than it needs to be. At this point, the one thing I think we could probably all agree on is that it'd be nice if it could be turned off using one button instead of a 3 or 4 step process via the infotainment screen. Oh, and remembering driver settings is a big one. If that gets fixed (it should be in newer models), I think that'll also go a long way to keeping drivers happier.

    Currently borrowing a MG4 base model while I wait for my MG5 control unit to be replaced. MG4 has a great ride but your 9 points plus are what happens when you dont take driver feedback into consideration before going to market.
    I'd add: no over the air updates. Why? How do owners know when a software update is available? Stickey screen response. Just keep trying. No reverse cam on base model. Major safety ommision. As with lane alert, front crash warning wont stay off and is too sensitive. So, when slowing from 30mph as approach a junction, with a car ahead, auto braking sometimes interrupts the smooth stop with a frightening jolt. Locate the charge flap on the bonnet/ hood undrr the MG logo not on the passenget side rear flank. Thanks!

    I have a problem with the windscreen washers. the spray from them hits the windscreen wiper arms instead of the screen, if I adjust them the go over the wiper arms then they spray the roof. My radio problem is the opposite to what's mentioned in the video, mine doesn't always come on when I turn on the car, I have to adjust the volume control or press pause (to unpause) on the steering wheel right joystick. That doesn't always work so I have to use the voice control saying. "hey MG" then. "I want to listen to radio" which works. Additionally I can usually drive over white lines without it complaining if I want to. It is not fit for purpose. I ALWAYS switch it off - every trip.

    MG5 owner - same infotainment system, but regen and drive modes have dedicated switches on the central column.
    I've had the main screen freeze, reverse cam not select , and some infotainment crashes that also take out automatic headlights and LKA. Regarding LKA and radio coming on automatically, none of the settings stay set it seems: driving mode is set to comfort, regen to 2, climate control to auto and 22 degrees, irrespective of what you set previously. And changing temperature and fan speed on the touch screen is not easy as it misses your presses.
    Finally, a couple of "wheels not straight" warnings, not sure why that needs a warning and a couple of times the car refuses to go from Park to Drive or Reverse, it just flips back to Park. Turning the car off and on 1 or 2 times seems to clear the issue. Anyone seen that on an MG4?

Decent boot space and space in the rear seats but wish the front passenger seat had electric adjustment - or even just height adjustments (wondering if I get an electric drivers seat abroad and fitting that would solve that issue with some creative wiring....), and pretty enough inside while still retaining a classic look.

    There are a few things about the MG4. One of which I think is very important and hardly anyone ever mention it. That is the battery. The base model 51kw battery is a LFP. The 64kw is a NMC. The difference can be important. My understanding is the LFP has 2000 cycles. NMC has 500. It's what I've read about these batteries. NMC has cobalt for the cathode. That's the positive I believe. Plus LFP can be charged to 100% every time with no problems. NMC should be up to 80% and only when needed 100% if you want to care for the battery in your EV. NMC however works better in very very cold conditions. Also LFP is safer. It's is much less likely to have thermal runaway. That's when it catches fire and burns for a long time. As for one peddle driving. Breaks should be used to ensure they don't sit dormant. Plus if it's like my EV the break isn't touched until you are going about 15 or so kms/hr. So not much wear on them at all.

    • @siasek
      @siasek  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, you're right about the LFP. I've talked about this in other videos, I typically like to keep the topic somewhat narrow so as not to have an hour long video. No one wants to listen to me for that long 😅
      But yes, you're right, the LFP is safer and can be charged to 100% as standard. I will say though that I typically charge up my NMC to 100% anyway because the displayed charge isn't a true 100% anyway and it'll only make a difference in a matter of like 8 years or so.. Chances are I'll have a new car by then.
      My ideal combo for the MG4 would be to get the Trophy version but with an LFP battery. I think that'd be the best of both worlds. Hope MG does it in the future! 🤞

    Thanks for your video.

We like the car, the only big I noticed is when turning the volume off your music up or down at the steering wheel and you hold the button the software crashes and don't let you adjust the volume anymore till new start.

    It's a nice size and a far more accessible price but that's a double edged sword. It was clearly built down to a price with some poorly considered cost cutting.
    There's no excuse for a modern car to fail to save virtually all settings every time you turn it off.
    This is probably just about the only modern car to still use incandescent bulbs for indicators and inside, and where's the rear internal light?
    Did they even bother to test that silly shallow platform for the phone? It just flies off under acceleration.
    The Xpower model has those silly orange calliper covers... WHY? I'll get rid of those when (if) I decide to buy one - I'm still on the fence.
    Apart from all that, the thing that really makes me think twice about it is the ridiculous level of nannying from this car. We're not five years old...

    • @siasek
      @siasek  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I'm sure some of these issues/shorcomings come as a result of trying to keep costs down. But I do have to say that I've been in significantly more expensive EVs that STILL had many compromises, which is why I'm willing to cut MG a little slack.
      I think the 2023 MY MG4 will keep driver settings saved, so that's a good improvement. I would hope they'd fix lighting as well, but even if not, luckily that is an easy fix. Regarding those calliper covers, it seems to me like they have a weird obsession with that color orange at MG. I'm not a fan either... but I guess they could be replaced fairly easily, so it's not a dealbraker.
      At the end of the day the worst of it to me is definitely the LKA. If there were a way to turn that off and KEEP it off, I think that would be a huge plus. 🙌

  • @peterensinger1770

    MG should look at Mercedes for an example of how the lane keeping assist should work I have a Mercedes B class which also has LKA and the way it works is if you are drifting out of the lane the LKA gently vibrates the steering wheel and if you get too close to the edge of the road the LKA briefly applies the brakes and vibrates the steering wheel in the direction you need to steer to avoid the edge of the road. I have had many drives of the MG4 and the only criticism i have is the LKA is too strong it almost steers the car into a hedge on country lanes. I have ordered the trophy spec version of the MG4 to replace the Mercedes as apart from the LKA i am impressed by the comfort and driving experience with the car. I will just turn off the LKA each time i start to drive it is a shame that the car doesn't remember the settings of these functions this i believe would be an easy software fix.

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hah! The fact that you're trading in you Mercedes for the MG4 speaks volumes. Seems like despite small shortcomings, it's still a really awesome car. The 2023 model upgrade includes the driver setting memory, so hopefully they will be providing this software fix even for older models. I do think that most its current imperfections should be fairly easy fixes. I hope they make them soon and INFORM current owners about it 😊

      @siasek I have a friend who has had an MG4 trophy since February and he put my name on his insurance so i could drive it longer than any test drive as such i have driven the MG4 for a few hours on several occasions and i based my decision to buy the MG4 trophy on this experience as i am impressed by the driving experience. I had been looking at going electric when i change my car so i have ordered the MG4 trophy spec, and the expected delivery is early to mid September and i am looking forward to getting it. especially as the price of petrol is rising again. i am definitely looking forward to the savings on the fuel as i am on an EV tariff for my electricity and at night i will get 6 hours of low rate electricity at 7.5p per Kwh i expect to do 200 miles a week so my spend on electricity should be less than £10 a week for the car I am currently paying about £60 per week in petrol to do these 200 miles.

    I've 10000kms done on my MG4 and I really do like the car. I like the way it drives, functions and looks. I think as an EV it represents great value for money. However since the topic is annoyances, here are my observations. The LKA has given me a lot of cause for alarm, in particular one time, as I passed a group of cyclists it pulled the car back towards them. I always turn it off, which in itself is dangerous if done when driving. Here are some other minor annoyances for the list. There is a design flaw with the phone tray. The surface has a low grip and the sides are shallow so invariably my phone slides off it when the car accelerates rapidly or on sharp corners. The TPMS has reported low tyre pressure warnings even though the tyre pressure was only slightly below normal and there was no real issues with tyre pressure or a puncture. Interestingly this warning came up on the three MG4s that I have driven (the two demo cars and the one I own). The air conditioner is noisy. There is no outside temperature display (2013 SE version). And lastly sometimes info or warnings pop up on the display, but only for a second and are gone before I can read them.

    • @siasek
      @siasek  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for sharing your experience! That phone tray issue is such amateur hour! 😅 Really seems like they could've tested that and chosen a better material. I do think the LKA is the worst offender here.. I did read recently that there is a service bulletin active for it and you can book a warranty service for an update, so maybe you can look into that. Fingers crossed that the other bugs will be resolved soon as well!

  • @ianlambert1071

    Yes, inability for the system to remember settings is frustrating., and the absence of 'over the air' software updates suggests that even if the 2023 model software changes like single pedal driving become available as a retrofit software update to 2022 models., we will have to wait .... an extremely long time in the queue to have it applied. I love the handling of the car., but the frustration of having no communication from the manufacturer about availability or planned action on software fixes or developments will drive me to a Tesla next time. The more success MG have with selling these lovely cars, the longer the queue for software updates will become I fear. And yes - in rural Britain with its heavily potholed roads requiring frequent driving across the central white lines ., forgetting to switch off 'lane keep assist', even for someone with strong wrists is certainly not an improvement in safety., neither is the subsequent 4 step touch screen process for switching it off whilst driving.

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When you put it that way, that LKA does seem like big pain... They should make it a lot easier to turn off since we're talking about a "safety measurement" and this seems to do quite the opposite 😬 . The lack of communication is really unfortunate. It seems to be the rule more than an exception these days - companies spend their resources to lure in new customers but don't the same effort to keep existing ones happy. Very shortsighted, as evident even by your comment about going with Tesla in the future.
      Maybe, hopefully, MG will still get their ish together and address some of these issues soon. It's really a shame for such a nice car to be marred by seemingly easily fixable mistakes.
      Thank you for sharing your perspective!

      I would probably complain first to EuroNCAP, who tested the assistant in crash tests. I think it depends on who has updated the controllers, and some combinations just work fundamentally worse than others. Fortunately it's easy to turn off, which most probably do. 🙂
      But it's just one function of a car that's otherwise awesome. Worse would be if, say, the door handles froze in the winter like on a Tesla, or the parking sensors stopped working because they decided to and they don't care that you bought it with working ones. 😄

    Every single time i drive i need to turn off the lane assist & reselect my drive mode; most concerning thing is that MG do not seem to care. Despite everything, it is an amazing car for the price, very good handling. The charging situation is a nightmare, but that is not MG's fault. However, I have never gotten above 100Kw charging speed (actually only like 70-80Kw), despite mine being rated for 130+... and yes I have done that from a 5% charge on a warm day with battery heating enabled. Should I return the car because I was lied to? No it is still the cheapest EV with a decent battery. They've cut corners to reach this low price, but those corners are not so bad :)

      I completely agree. If they invested a bit more into information about software and updates, it would reassure customers to let them know - we know about the LKA problem and we are working on a fix... It's that simple.
      Regarding the DC charging, I'm not sure off the top of my head, but I think the charging was reduced to 88 kW max, that would be consistent with your findings. Still, that's very good for the money. 🙂 I have an e-C4 that cost almost as much new as two MG4s and the winter charging is an absolute tragedy (below 30 kW and the battery heater can't be turned on, winter DC charging is more of an ordeal than with the old VW e-Golf, big shame for Stellantis)

    @siasek: From France. I confirm, the LKA is a piece of crap, this sytem is even dangerous on country roads. When you forget to disable it at the beginning, you have to do while driving and it's dangerous. I know, the EU ask to turn automatically ON but they don't know how it works and how is not safe, we don't all drive on high way. Temperature like you said, have to set 5°C above what we really get.
    On the top list, I face the problem of the light of the infotainement screen varies by it self. I set at the minimum because it is too bright during day light and worse at night because the screen catches your eyes. Sometimes it comes back at any level it wants, not at the level I set. Also, the Epedal is not easy to access, so I don't use it. This sytem is useful in town, on road you don't use it. Why we don't have an easy and quick access thru the stars favorit buttons? Also no automatic side window closing when closing the car. The head light, full beam is just shit. Mine arrived not well ajusted so reajust them but even, they don't do a good job. My old Renault Master over 20 years old, show much better lights. To finish, the access to the fusebox is absolutely stupid, no door! I could put more, but right now it is enough. Yes I would rethink to buy the MG4 as before I drove a Nissan leaf 2020 for three years, which was so great, only the range was too short (40Kwh). Thanks for your video.

    No oil leaks from me (in fact, it would have been the most annoying one for me!);
    -the HVAC one is mad, 25C is the minimum temperature for it to start warming up, in fact I set the temp to 25C for it to be comfortable, quite annoying.
    -No problem with the door as I have the Trophy version
    -the light sensitivity is silly, but it bothers me less than other niggles, I guess I just got used to it
    -You can't do is precondition while it's plugged in but not charging, not necesarily an issue with SOC. Apparently it's an app problem, not a vehicle one. Unlocking and locking the car with the key seems to make it work, as long as your car is within range
    -don't use the internal satnav, slow, awkward and not intuitive, doesn't give you total time to destination and it's not interactive. Android auto for the win!
    -no issues with the parking camera, if anything, it's one of the things that works perfectly
    -not seen the radio issue, but then again I always have a phone connected
    -LKA is a horror show, safety requirements I understand, but the way it works is mad. It's reactive, not corrective, on Land Rovers for example, it turns to steer you away from the line then steers back to centre you. On MGs it just turns you away from the line, aggressively and then it becomes your problem to correct the trajectory. It's why I turn it OFF everytime.
    I suspect as cars become more an more software on wheels, we'll have more of these nuisances to deal with. MG is pretty slow with updates and the lack of SOTA ability at this stage is quite annoying. It's like no one's paying attention to what Tesla is doing right...
    That said, I wouldn't reconsider getting it. Still the best value for money and in fact, I would be willing to move on to an Xpower given the chance. Life's too short to worry about everything!

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Looks like the oil leaks were mainly an issue in the earliest models and seems like they've luckily taken care of that at this point, so that's at least one thing MG can check off their list. Good tip with the unlocking/locking the car to get the pre-condition running... a few people have commented that the more annoying part is that the car itself doesn't start preheating if the car is plugged in and it's a right pain if they have it parked outside in the winter in the snow.
      I've been reading mixed reviews on the LKA... a few people have mentioned it's not bad and does what it's meant to, but I've definitely heard WAY more feedback about it being awful. I would be turning that thing off too because it sounds very unpredictable and keeps the driver guessing... that's really a nightmare! 😳
      I do think you're right about us having to deal with a steadily increasing amount of these software issues.That's always the flipside of progress - stuff gets easier, safer, more convenient, but we also become increasingly dependent on it and these software glitches become more of a nuisance or, even worse, dangerous. See why I have reservations MG4 fully autonomous driving? 😄
      Still, I do agree that MG4 is indeed a great value for the money and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that more and more of these small issues will be getting resolved soon. Hopefully by the time you get the Xpower, MG will have resolved any bugs there as well and you'll just get to enjoy the sweet ride without the small annoyances!

    • @ytdood
      @ytdood 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@siasekI wouldn't worry about the autonomous part on the MG4, it needs probably a whole architecture change for that to happen. A typical autonomous car has more several cameras just for the front field of fiew, radars for all corners of the car and seamless communication between them. Something that I doubt the MG4 will ever have :)) Having just come back from a 350 mile trip (that's what, 580km I think?) with just 1 charge on Tesla's supercharger network, I realize what I dislike the most about this car now - the efficiency. My friend who drives a Kona, same trip, got 0.5 mi/kWh more than me and we drove in convoy. So I'm not sure my next EV will still be an MG, but by the time my 3 year lease is done, I'm sure I'll have more to choose from.
      Mostly, I hate these glitchy touchscreens and small icons that just like MG, a lot of manufacturers are employing, but worse off is going to be the legal enforcement to have tonnes of chimes, warnings, bings and bongs about various features from future model years. If they carry on like this, it'll be an absolute nightmare to drive any car as even the slightest 'mistake' will be penalized audibly initially. A glitchy LKA that makes you go over the side of the road lines, then beeps at you for not staying in lane, that would help me turn into the American Psycho and grab my axe ...
      But I'm remaining optimistic, maybe things will naturally get better in time, who knows?

    • @siasek
      @siasek  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hah, you're absolutely right - the preparation for autonomous driving in the MG4, which can't even handle ordinary LKA, is a bit laughable.😄
      It's wonderful that you can have the MG4 for 3 years and then simply replace it, I think the market offer will be amazing by then. I'll be watching with anticipation to see if MG manages to upgrade the MG4 or not. If they don't, they will clearly disappoint a lot of their early adopter customers.
      I am also remaining optimistic, at the same time, I think it's good to put a little pressure on these car companies by calling them out on their crap a bit.

      If you knew the MG4 in more detail, you'd know that glitches occur across models and some have them and some don't. That's why I like to hear from people with different experiences and maybe we can come to some solutions through them. For example, LKA is downright dangerous on some versions of the MG4 and fine on others. We've even learned through comments that there is a solution to various problems that the service itself definitely won't offer you.
      Also, if you're annoyed by a thousand little things in your car, in practice it can be worse than one real issue that can be easily fixed. You don't know what to do because the service won't help you, they don't understand the software and they'll make excuses that it's normal or it's not happening.

      If this is a question for me, I didn't buy the MG4 because it wasn't available when I bought my new EV. I bought a year old e-C4 at a significantly better price than a new MG4 cost at the time. Today I'd probably opt for the MG4 instead. I am keeping an eye on it because despite these issues, it still basically has no proper competition in the cheap new EV sector, especially the SE in the UK.
      I do think it'll be great if MG gets a bit better at communicating with their customers and starts putting issue resolution as a priority even for current owners (not just in new models).

    Cheap car but value for money is unbeatable. The battery is 51kw 400V making current much lower reducing heat. The car comes with a charger but lacks things that I generally don't care much about. Other cars force those things on me. My Toyota rav4 was a POS in many ways. But everyone says how good it is cos the last person with rep said it was good too.
    I never thought I'd buy an mg but after being burned by Mazda n Toyota. I took the leap. My two biggest issues is the AC always blowing on my feet in summer and the stretch to get out the car. Other not a bad car at all.

      You're right, the price/performance ratio of the MG4 with the LPF battery is excellent. My video is certainly not meant to be an unwarranted criticism, in fact it more implies that the MG4 is actually a damn good car. Though of course it has its faults, but they're only minor.
      Personally, I'd like a Trophy version with an LFP battery like they have in Thailand, for example. Then it would be the perfect combination. But I think MG were worried they wouldn't be able to supply it, as I believe they would be swamped with orders from Europeans. 😄

    The faults you got were as follows.
    1. The oil leak. My car has never had that, I think it's a solved problem.
    2. Temperature on the HVAC screen. I have this problem. I have to explain to my passengers that I am not trying to fry them.
    3. automatic door locking. This is driving me insane, but the dealer said they couldn't do anything, even a one-time hack to fix it. I almost get a panic attack when I hear the doors lock, and it's worse because I know this car once had a recall because it was locking people in. I know it's not really locking me in, but that doesn't help.
    4. Automatic lights. I have taken the cover right off the light sensor. This more or less sorts it, although it's still a bit over-eager. I have ordered a replacement sensor cover that has an open top, so I've still got my original cover if they ever do a software fox for this.
    5. Can't pre-heat the CAR (not the battery) while the car is plugged in but not charging. (Why would anyone want to pre-heat their battery remotely from the house? I don't think there is a facility to do that.) So on a winter day you have to go out in the snow and unplug the car before you can set it to defrost and warm up. You might as well just turn on the heating while you're there, it completely negates the point of having a remote function. (There is a rumour there is a software fix for this but my dealer didn't know anything about it.)
    6. Navigation doesn't show chargers. I have an SE so I don't have this system anyway.
    7. Infotainment screen freezes. Mine has never done this and I think it might be a Trophy problem.
    8. Radio always coming on. This is extremely annoying, especially if you've just picked up a passenger. Radio comes on, I hit the off button, but the startled passenger says "what was that?!" Needs fixing.
    9. LKA always on. What is needed is a one-press physical button to turn it off. The manual says to turn it off if it starts pulling the car in unwanted ways, say on a rutted road, but you have to do about four taps on the infotainment screen to do that, with your left hand, while the car is being pulled into the ditch.
    Faults you didn't mention. Maybe episode 2?
    1. Until software version R13, the SE had an external temperature display on the infotainment screen. Very useful. But the two subsequent versions (R13 and - I think - R21) have removed this. Lots of people hanging on to R13 and refusing updates because of this.
    2. In the SE, the USB music player is rendered useless because it doesn't support folders/directories. It plays whatever tracks are on the stick in alphabetical order of track name (not file name). This is hopeless for longer works of music or plays, because everything is played out of order - indeed, if you have more than one piece of music or drama on the stick, it mixes everything up. The fix is to spend hours on the computer renaming every single file. I'm on 403 and counting. (The Trophy doesn't have this issue.)
    3. When the car is put in SPORT mode, the indicator on the central screen flips to SNOW, although SPORT remains on the driver's screen. The car is still actually in SPORT. Not a biggie, but come on!
    4. The speed limit recognition gets it wrong (by reading signs that are no applicable to the car or the road it's on) so often that it's not worth having.
    5. The only way to turn on the fog lights is to hit a tiny touch-button on the far left top of the central screen. This is not a safe manoeuvre when you're trying to drive in fog. It needs a physical button.
    6. The internal lights would disgrace a birthday cake candle. They're easy to replace with decent LEDs, but why would MG fit incandescent bulbs that can hardly be seen on an EV that's already festooned in bright LEDs all over the place?
    7. The state-of-charge indicator bar on the home screen stays green nearly all the time, but occasionally flips to amber for no apparent reason. It seems likely it's intended to go amber at a moderately low charge and red when things are getting critical, but it doesn't actually do that.
    These are my gripes on the SE. You maybe want to ask Trophy owners about their LKA coming on all by itself when the central screen switches between light and dark modes (which it will do all the time if you haven't fixed the lights issue), or the HVAC screen only remaining visible for a couple of seconds when they press the star button, or the way their phones keep unpairing. (The SE doesn't have these problems.)

      Actually I forgot a couple of important things I meant to include right at the top. Not software issues, but hardware.
      1. Many many cars (possibly a majority) are being supplied with warped or sagging undertrays - the bit at the back that covers the motor. The sag creates a gap facing into the wind, which is obviously bad for aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, and also presents a hazard going through water, or simply picking up road crud, salt etc, and packing it into the motor compartment. Owners are having a lot of trouble getting dealers to take this seriously and fit replacement trays where necessary.
      2. Almost everyone reports that their air conditioning system makes quite a pronounced noise, though some describe a louder noise than others. There seems to be a fix involving regassing with a different grade of oil, but nobody is quite sure if some cars also have a mechanical problem with the fan. Again owners are having trouble getting their dealers to take this seriously.

    • @moragkerr9577
      @moragkerr9577 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I should say that I am hearing various opinions that the four screamingly annoying faults that are only present in the SE, that is the external temperature display, the door locking, the USB player and the radio always coming on, have been represented by some people as deliberate downgrading of the SE specs by MG. I have even had people tell me that the SE was never meant to have an external temperature display (although of course it has the sensor!), and when MG discovered that it had been included by accident they rushed out a software update to remove it!
      What do you expect from the "poverty spec" model, they say. MG isn't going to give SE owners the luxuries the Trophy has! But the Trophy has all sorts of fancy specifications the SE doesn't, and these are advertised. These small software things, that cost nothing to implement, as you say, "why wouldn't they?" This is still a car costing nearly £30,000 in the LR version. In particular I can't see MG being vindictive enough to issue a software update to remove a (pretty basic safety) feature that was included by accident!
      Come on, MG, SE owners are your customers too, and we still paid a lot of money for these cars. We deserve a USB player that works, a radio that stays off, an external temperature display, and the ability to turn off the auto-locking.

    • @moragkerr9577
      @moragkerr9577 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, another one.
      The internal temperature display in the remote control app is all over the place. It's often significantly higher than the real temperature (but i have seen it lower), and it changes by several degrees within seconds on consecutive scan, even if the car has been sitting in the garage for two days. (Generally it seems to get closer to the real temperature.) It also occasionally displays a random 87C, just for the hell of it. Not that having the internal temperature correct on the app is important, the external temperature is the important one (and it's always right and stable), and you can easily estimate the internal temperature if you know that. But come on! (I have no idea if this is related to the five-degree over-estimate that the central screen produces for the internal temperature goal. Possibly not, because that is consistent, and the app's report of that temperature is not.)

      @@siasek The worrying thing is that much of it would be really simple to fix, but they just don't seem to be receptive to the idea that they should be doing that. They put a rear wiper and a centre head-rest on the newer cars, and frankly who cares. The wiper isn't needed and the head-rest will only be taken off until such time as the owner wants to carry three adults in the back. Which will usually be the tenth of never. But these were obvious things that prospective purchasers and reviewers were commenting on **before they bought the car**, and I guess they thought that their absence was putting buyers off.
      But you only notice the real annoyances when you've been driving the car for a little time, and maybe some people won't notice all of them - not everyone wants to use the USB music player, not everyone wants to turn off the automatic locking. But it's as if, once the car is sold, MG don't care if these things are annoying. We didn't know about them when you bought the car, and now they've got our money they don't care.
      The idea that it's **deliberate** that they made the USB player in the SE useless, that they **deliberately** removed the disabling function from the automatic door locking in the SE, that they **deliberately** made the SE's radio come on all the time, and worst of all that they **deliberately** intended the SE not to have an external temperature display *and then rushed out a software update to remove it when they realised it had been included by mistake*, all to downgrade the experience of owning an SE while saving precisely zero money, is absolutely insane.

      The crash test result of the MG4 is better than the e-C4, the cervical spine of the passengers in the back would be concerning I suppose if you regularly have passengers back there, but if not, it's sort of a non-issue. Overall, unfortuntaely European cars are very much behind current Chinese production. I had the VW e-Golf and it was an amazing car (unfortunately small battery as it was 1st generation) but since then, it's like VW has thrown all their prior wins out the window. The ID.3 is really lame with an unusable touchscreen steering wheel and tragic infotainment. I only got the E-C4 because of the good price for a year old used car from Germany, but it's definitely not a good EV. Sometimes I wonder what these folks were thinking with when they made it, cause it surely couldn't have been their brain. I hope that European automakers up their game, but at this point, it's mainly a disappoinment.

      I really like Zeekr too! It's such a shame about Volvo having no HUD, no driver display. That's what would hold me back from getting the EX30, other than that I really like it.

      and the Smart #1 has my attention. Again; I don't know if it'll come to Australia.

    They are trying to be more British and break down like old MG
    Just kidding let’s hope they solve all these nagging issues

      I hope so too, but at the same time we can see how good the car is, when people are only dealing with small issues like this 😄

    Cheap car, cheaply made.

      At this point it still seems like the affordable price still wins over its flaws for most users 🤷

      Same as VW ID3 but cheaper a
      Lot.
      Some say it’s a baby Tesla. Made Tesla manufacture basic models at £25k (like the MG4 SE) due out next yr or later this year. You think you’ve seen lots of Teslas on the road you ain’t seen nothing yet 😂
      Also tell me we’re NOT getting the cyber truck over in UK plz 😂

      @siasek  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great point, many more expensive models face these or even worse issues.. it's good that MG is putting the pressure on other manufacturers to get their prices lower. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Tesla 2 will offer. .. and I share your sentiments regarding the Cybertruck. It look a bit insane to me, so not super looking forward to seeing those start driving around. We do have at least a couple years yet before the madness is unleashed 😅

    Just bought the petrol only MG HS Trophy version. Absolutely trash!!!!! The gear box and engine are rubbish plus the quality of the used materials screams cheap China..... I wish I never bothered with this overpriced junk.....

    • @siasek
      @siasek  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The MG HS seems to me to be great for the money, we have one parked outside our house and for the price of an equipped Skoda Fabia you get a big SUV. Obviously it's not premium, but the price/performance ratio seems very good to me. Utter rubbish in terms of materials inside for me is maybe the ID.3, the MG HS looks a class better and has a steering wheel with buttons that work as an extra bonus. 😄

      Bem, tendo em conta que se trata de um vídeo sobre queixas dos proprietários, não é de estranhar que haja críticas. Mas mesmo este vídeo não tem APENAS críticas. Se é essa a sua impressão, então não deve estar a ouvir muito bem. 😊

    MG is China. So if you buy something built in China, din't expect quality! I think i said enough.....

    • @siasek
      @siasek  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Actually I think Chinese EVs seem to be doing quite well, most owners I've spoken to are happy with their MG4, despite some of these birthing pains. That there is no quality from China is decades old thinking. You get exactly the quality you pay for - see Volvo, Polestar, BMW IX3, Chinese Tesla Model Y...
      I do think that the EV market in general is still trying to find its way a bit, and drivers have experienced similar frustrations with both European and American made EVs. I do hope the newer MG4 models work out these kinks though
