- I'm an Aussie expat living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for 2 years. In this video, I tell you why it's one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
I've explored Malaysia (& South East Asia) and have much to say about what I LOVE. Here are the top 10 things I love about Malaysia as a country and a place to live (including Malaysian culture, lifestyle, people, and of course, Malaysian food!)
If you're a foreigner, this video will help you decide if visiting or moving to Malaysia is right for you.
If you're local, this video will help you understand an expat's perspective of your beautiful country.
I am not an expert on Malaysia (yet), and I may get some things wrong, but this is my authentic opinion based on my experiences. Please correct me in the comments and we can all learn more about Malaysia.

2:35 Yes, true. But being from one of the Malaysian Bornean State, we now can get nice commercial rice wine. Sarawak even has our own beer - 1602 craft beer. I'm no drinker myself but once in a while, I would like a sip or two too. This is probably not known to you because expats don't visit the other side of Malaysia except for the beaches and diving in Sabah, so their impression of Malaysia is peninsula-centric.
I admire the way you empathetically acknowledge that it's not always affordable for the locals. It reflects a deep understanding of their perspective.
Thank you for this kind comment. I have many local friends and have realised how fortunate I am to have been born in Australia. I hope to educate my family and friends back home and raise awareness and understanding.
@@JackAldertonyou so handsome! Done subscribed. 😘💕💦
One thing foreign youtubers always fail to mention or more likely take for granted of is how english is widely used in Malaysia especially compared to countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam or even east asian countries like Japan, S. Korea, China etc. Pretty much everything important is written in english (signboards, apps, instructions, restaurant menus etc plus there are even multiple english speaking radio stations too). U can also go to hospitals, police stations, government agencies etc and use english there without much issues. Hey, I'm a local, and my english is ok right? 😅
Very true - it was very noticable when I travelled to Korea 😆
Malaysia has fantastic English and almost everyone can speak multiple languages.
Hi mate.. I'm a Malaysian, thank you for your kind words about my country the under-rated MALAYSIA 🇲🇾
To know Malaysia is to love Malaysia, Malaysia is truly Asia 👍🇲🇾😊✌️
Welcome, appreciate you having me here!
Thank you so much, we are an Australian, Canadian family living in Sydney now,we are considering to move to Malaysia too. Your video is helping us so much.
Look up for Malaysia My 2nd Home MM2H programme by the government for foreigners who plan to retire in the country.
Glad it helped, let me know if you make the move or visit :D
couldn't agree with you more! this country is one of the best countries in the world!
true but not tax friendly anymore
Subhanallah Alhamdulillah
As an expat from Malaysia living in Australia, I do miss the food and the white sand beaches Malaysia has to offer. Enjoy your time 😘
I also love malaysia I have travelled there 12 times I live in Sydney....I would love to move there as well.....
absolutely well-balance facts. indeed it is true facts
Thanks mate.

I live in KL past 28 years.I am native indigenous from the East of Peninsula of Malaysia so called “Borneo LIMBANG Sarawak” very closed to Brunei.
I am in love with KL CITY .Amaze with the skyscrapers.Shopping Mall just amazing.
I’ve visited Langkawi Island,Pangkor Island,Tioman Island,Cameron Highland,Genting Highland,Perhentian Island, visited Singapore,Thailand and Bali. Those were the days We touring around town to Ipoh. From Petaling Jaya to Kelantan longer hours driving 20 hours! back and forth to Langkawi and Penang Island,Taman Negara Pahang. We love travel and camping.
Malaysia fantastic place to live, dream that I would never taught.
I’ve met lovely,so friendly people here in KL,make lots of friends.
There are also negative side and I choose to speak about the positive.
Take a walk and a leisure time in the afternoon, cuppa of tea at Mamak Shop,The Masala Tea amazing. Feasting up to supper.
I enjoyed the bus ride around KL City so much included out of town.
Frequent travel with AirAsia for many years.
“THANK YOU” for choosing MALAYSIA to live, explore the inner side, the beauty of mix cultures between so many races living in harmony.
I served in privates health care services far too long, love seeing all kind of people.KL has the best public transportation.
Glad You choose MALAYSIA 🇲🇾 as Your home.

Thank you for having me and writing this wonderful comment 💙
I agree I lived in south east Asia for 8 years and KL is my favourite I would choose there first again.
Awesome Rob! Great to hear you had a great experience here. Thanks for the comment.
Informative & great video, thankyou for choosing Malaysia👍
Thank you for having me!
Malaysia is an up and coming city with lots of potential for growth, and prices are generally still on the affordable side of things. It has all the modern infrastructures and convenience of a developed country, but at a developing country's cost!😅😊
100% Nick!
Sprinkle that malaysian pride everywhere 🎉
I’ve lived there for 2yrs also, about 10yrs ago, absolutely loved it! Your views are exactly the same as mine! I’m only back in this hole because of my kids 🤷🏻♂️ until then… 😁
Haha thanks for your comment, glad a lot of people are resonating with my thoughts. Enjoy your family time! That is one thing I miss while living here
ohhh that hits a soft spot, I totally get it, best way is to make a new circle off friends there and hopefully it will flourish into something good :) @@JackAlderton
Thanks for loving Malaysia, welcome Expat to KL =)
Thank you for having me!
I'd like to add a couple more points ..
One being our medical facilities is no. 1 in the world and talking bout food, you can get food 24/7 ...
Great point. I actually didn't mention healthcare because I want to make a full video about it. Malaysian healthcare is WAY better than Australian healthcare. By far.
TO BE HONEST, AS MALAYSIAN HERE IN AUSTRALIA..I START TO SEE THE BEAUTY OF MY COUNTRY NOW COMPARED TO BEFORE
Thanks for watching!
my great pleasure
Enjoyed the video, your content and energy in presenting. We planning to be in Malaysia for extended periods in next couple years and it was very nice to hear and affirm some of your points. All the best.
Malaysia only has 2 weather (no winter by the way, and never snow) which are sunny all year round with occasional rain. There is a rain season which you may want to avoid. It could rain several times in a day (20-30 minutes long) or in some areas it may rain non stop for several days instead .
Unless you do like to walk in the rain.
I personally like running in the rain 😆 I find rain bearable when it's warm, but terribly uncomfortable when it's cold.
How about Health Facilities? I think it is one of the best. You can walk in to any private clinics if you are not feeling well, you could see a doctor and get medicines in that clinic itself.
You are absolutely right. I plan to make another video just about healthcare. It is WAY better than Australia. I was able to see a specialist, get an MRI scan and see the specialist again a few hours later, for free. In Australia this would take weeks (or even months) and cost a lot of money.
Have a nice day in Malaysia . You nice to us we love you
Thank you for having me!
Thank you for 10 things U like about Msia. Hope 10 things U like still won the 10 U don't like. Of course there are pro & con in part of life.Think positif will make us feel better. As a malaysian I hope you will love & remember Msia with your sweet moment. Make an experiment & experience it. Go & xplore beautiful of Msia. It's truly diverse with people, language, culture, religion, food, history etc.
Thank you for your nice comment. I sure will!
Thank you for this lovely video and the ten things you enjoy most living in KL, Malaysia.
Look forward to watching your dislikes living in Malaysia. Perhaps, you could also do your top ten food in Malaysia, your top ten places in KL and Malaysia.
I couldn't agree more with you on one of your points. The daily news sometimes are crowding our clarity of mind and the sense of purpose in life.
Thank you for this great comment. Those are great ideas - I'll do my best to make those videos!
@@JackAlderton Thank you for your video, appreciate the great content. 😀
Balanced views on Malaysia, being an expat myself here in KLCC, I agree with all.
Cost of living is definitely a powerful and valid reason
Paid AU$1000 (RM3000) per month for a Unilodge room in Canberra for 3 years. I can rent two decent condos in KL with AU$1000 ( using my brothers rental condo at RM1400/mo partly furnished).
fellow canberra unilodger here! 🤚🏽
yeap, the accomodation / housing cost in australia is crazy.. 😭
Welcome to Malaysia... i hope u enjoy our country.... a lot of food and best destination.... truly Asia
I love ur comments..u always mentioned that some of your points might be different from local points of view...ur comments definitely not over the moon or fake just to attract the view..in the word i can sense honesty in your point about Malaysia.
Thank you.
Fun fact: Singapore might be the most expensive country in the world for the last 9yrs and is about 4 times more expensive than Malaysia (esp in rental market & car ownerships),but u forgot the salary part!!!🥰😁🤭Singapore has the HIGHEST avg salary in asia & is in world top 3 highest, slightly higher than ur Australia❤. Singapore avg salary is about 6X higher than Malaysia & Singapore has one of strongest currencies in asia. So in that sense, U actually get more value & saving in ur $$, much more than Malaysia.
Also even when everything so expensive in Singapore, Singapore still has cheap food options cos we have thousands of street food/hawker centres & food courts. If u are observant, u’ll notice the pricing not much diff from Malaysia. Singapore offers similar food like Malaysia since we had share similar history before❤❤U earn higher salary in Singapore & u get to save more $$ too. That explains why there are over 1 million Malaysians been working in Singapore. U should try visit the border one day & see for urself how thousands of Malaysians cross border daily to work in Singapore🥰🥰Those are the ones usually still have home in JB Malaysia & work in Singapore.🤭
Singapore also has world class infrastructure(ranked as world no.1) & best MRT subway system that started in the 80s, the 1st one in Southeast Asia.❤The buses are linked to the MRT system & super efficient that come in so frequently every few mins. U can check out all the buses arrival time through the app too.❤❤❤
Great comment! Yes, I have been to Singapore many times and I do love it. The infrastructure is definitely the best & I'd live there if it was possible. Unfortunately in my situation it's difficult to get a job there that pays significantly more than what I can get in Malaysia at the moment. I highly recommend SG to anyone who can afford it, or is able to get a fantastic job there. Thanks for the insights!
I love your videos Jack, I am a Malaysian but live in Europe for many years. I do miss my Malaysian family, friends and Malaysian food a lot. ❤
Thank you! Hope you make the most of Europe, I haven't had a chance to explore it properly yet.
Great video & interesting perspective Jack 🙏 I appreciate the cost of living is lower than 🇦🇺 For me the weather is one of the downsides of 🇲🇾( constant humidity & heat) having no distinct seasons is not for me) 😰 I enjoyed visiting KL 👍
Fair enough! I do blast the airconditioning 😆 Thanks for your comment.
Another plus point is shopping online either with Shopee & Lazada is super fast & cheap too. I know it takes a long time for online delivery in Melbourne
So true! I could definitely make another 10 things I love about Malaysia.
Another one is shops staying open late. Australia is dead after 6pm!
Nice video Mate...
I am not sure but did you mention the #1 ease about Malaysia is the fact of the English language spoken and used widely. 😊
It helps tremendously with assimilation compared to countries like Thailand, Indonesia, etc in South East Asia.
Especially for bureaucracy issues as well as hospital visits. The ability to express yourself on a daily level whatever your activities are makes living in another country much easier when ones Mother tongue language is also spoken.
😁
That is very true - thanks for raising this. Perhaps it's something I take for granted. I'm amazed that almost everyone here can speak at least 3 languages - very impressive!
Hey jack welcome to malaysia, really appreciate your review 🙏
Thank you for having me!
Absolutely on points🎉
People really need to travel around to gauge the reality comparisons. Still, it depends on individual luck and fate. Many might not have such capacity to work it out. But for those who can, why not travel more and choose while they have choices in hand.
When, a person is financially free and capable basically most countries around the world are good(i mean those good countries - most Europe and some Asian countries) to live but they lack of cultural diversity and tolerance like Malaysia and Singapore.
Then, why Malaysia? Simply put - abundance of fresh products where you need not to worry about like people in other parts of the world. Able to live a bit lavishly and quality life but at a very discounted price.
Boring? Just take a week or month to get wild in Thailand or Japan or Indonesia or elsewhere ... And back to Malaysia for a good relax and recharge ❤
- a dude from Melaka
Amazing comment, thanks for writing it - agree!!
Thanks for your view n information about M'sia some times we local don't realise how good is our country even though there are many other things can be improve i will wait until your next video bye🙋♀️
Excellent information🙏👏❤️
Glad you liked it - thanks!
It's a tad too hot and humid in KL. A nice 27 degree breezy day on Bondi beats any day in KL.
Unfortunately a nice 27 degree breezy day on Bondi is pretty rare these days, and when the weather's good - it's packed!
Thanks for your comment though - I miss Aussie beaches that's for sure.
Interesting insights Jack! Grab especially sounds interesting, we had something similar in Dubai. Hope to see your channel pop like crazy 🤟🏾
Thanks mate! Appreciate that and I'll be following your journey too :D
hey mate, im here in KL on holiday thanks to your videos. im looking at getting mm2h visa in June when I turn 30. See you soon!!
Awesome bro! Feel free to reach out, hope you have an awesome time.
What advice do you have for westerners, I'm from the USA, lookng for work in Malaysia?
So far I haven't had much luck so any useful insights could be really hepful.
I'll try to help. I didn't actively seek work in Malaysia, it found me. Having said that, it's pretty obvious to me that Western education and even being a native english speaker is highly praised. I would try to find a writing job or something related to english language, you should be a shoe-in if you're from the USA. The hard part will be the wages, you might have to accept a fair bit less money unless your skillset is similar to the above.
Love this!
Thank you!! Vid popped 🔥

nice view Jack!

Welcome to Malaysia, enjoy your day.😊😊
Thank you!
Insightful video! I can’t believe you nearly forgot to mention the food! The food in Malaysia is enough to make you want to move there!!
it's easy to calculate the difference in living profit in malaysia through the difference of your currency with the malaysia profit as much, if UK in malaysia the difference is 6x times. if usa is different 4x. if Australia is 3x different. UK citizens are very fortunate to live in Malaysia with 6x more profit than living in the UK by enjoying better facilities than the UK and Malaysia is more modern than the UK
Yes that's roughly true. Thanks for your comment!
Thank you!! Very insightful! Pls post more!!
Thank you! Lots more coming.

Great, I love watching your video bro👏

Hi¡,Jack, I'm new to your vlog, wishing to see more about m'sia. My homeland.tq.
Thanks Karen, I'll be posting much more!
Because Malaysian 1st thing is respect... Adab... Behaved. Islam teaches that and Malays culture has always to respect others , your neighbours, friends and guest
that is a great principle
Very precise explanation about Malaysia
Thanks! 😃
I lived in Sydney for a few years. While I like the weather, outdoor park, bbq and beaches, housing is just a nightmare. Get paid in oz dollar or whatever higher currency there is and live in KL where housing is just in oversupply.
Absolutely agree. And it's just getting worse!
Great video Jack. Hoping to move to Malaysia in a few months.
Perhaps you could make a video on the house renting process & recommend an agent or two? 😊
Thanks mate - hope it goes well and feel free to keep in touch.
Good idea, thanks for the suggestion. In the meantime, check out propertyguru and iproperty. Find high-rated agents (most are in higher end condos) and they will go above and beyond to show you available units (including driving you around) - it's a GREAT experience compared to Australia haha.
@@JackAlderton absolutely. Will do Jack. So look forward to being in KL.
Great tips. Will surely check out those sites and reach out to agents. Good to know agents take good care of you there :)
Enjoy your stay here Jack
Love from Malaysia 🇲🇾💕
not sure if u know bout this, but regarding the alcohol thing, think i seen on most expat vid regarding this is,since malaysia @ any SEA countries are less streesed, and expat can spend 1/2 @ 1/3 from their earning (USD convert RM) working here (malaysia),they tend to less drink as they less stressed, headache, and the weather since sun is most out,its improved the mood, hence less the drinking..some even dont even drink anymore as they getting more happier, leisure life vs how they are in the western country..
yep I definitely agree with that! Makes a lot of sense. I hardly drink anymore and I don't party here, it's been much better for me mentally and for my self development. Thanks for sharing.
@@JackAldertonas someone a local & been exposed to the sun entire life,i kinda never get the gist/why the sun is so important whenever a foreigner always highlighted it out in litearally every vid i seen, but now i get it..being a cold country in a harsh condition (thanks to frostpunk (a surviving game) vs sunny .. back then,in my teen-early adult days,i used to party & clubbing meaning going to cyber cafe, spend hours on gaming pc 🤣🤣🤣..thats how hard i party back then
Great insights man. I'm planning to do the same and move to Thailand later this year. I found it surprising to hear that accomodation in Malaysia was cheaper than Thailand. Not what I was expecting. What made you decide to go with Malaysia?
Mate, go for it! Best decision you'll make and worse case you can always go back.
I think it depends entirely on your situation. For me, I got a sweet job offer that paid the same (more actually) than my Aussie income. No brainer to move when you get more holidays and
In recent years, expatriates coming to Malaysia must be very satisfied, as the depreciation of the Malaysian Ringgit makes it very affordable for them. However, for us Malaysians, traveling abroad is becoming increasingly difficult.
That's true - thanks for sharing. Yes I have felt it a bit, I get paid in MYR and it has depreciated a fair bit against the USD and AUD. I hope it bounces back!
Thank you for the video. Subscribed!! A piece of advice, please go to East Malaysia and you'll see a different world😊you will be surprised.
Hello my friend, good to see you on livestream, thumbs up 👍
cheers!!
Your 10 points are spot on. I watched plenty of youtubers' videos on their 10 best or 10 worst things about Malaysia. Your list differs from them a little bit and I agreed to all 10. However, I'll wait till you posted the video on 10 things you don't like about Malaysia before I subscribe to your channel.. make it good mate 😂😂✌
Haha appreciate that. I'll give it some thought but I'll tell you one negative now - people get very defensive. It's hard to constructively criticise anything without getting in a fight. Though this is the same in most countries now.. including Australia, so it's not unique to Malaysia!
@@JackAlderton If the criticism comes in any other language but English, it is fine I guess because only citizens from that country will suck it up. Otherwise, if it's in English, the whole world will get the misinformation (if it is misinformation). So.. make sure you know your stuff.
100% true😊
How do you compare the social life and dating there with somehwere like the Philipines???
It would be really interesting to know the differences.
Great question - thanks for the suggestion.
I'd love to make a full video on this but I'll answe succinctly here:
Social life is excellent IF you put yourself out there and mingle with expat communities. There are many expats from all around the world here but westerners MAY find it difficult to really find the social life they're used to with locals because of religious differences. Depends how open-minded you are.
This also applies to dating - I had a few dodgy scenarios when I was unaware of the ettiquete when I first moved here. In general, it is great if you're open minded and upfront with your intentions. If you're looking for a more similar religious and cultural environment to the West, Philippines would be closer.
Yes it rained all month with cloudy skies the first time I was there
:(
I agreed with your opinions as a Malaysian lives overseas I miss warm weather. Sometimes wearing thick heavy jackets in winter very annoying 😂. I can't wait to fly back soon to celebrate Raya with my family there.
Agree! Enjoy your time back here. Happy Raya

Hi Jack great video what is the name of the condo you are staying at - looking at a few different places for rent but many have a lot of Air BNB cheers

Excellent video!...I live in rural Vic and have just discovered Malaysia and can't wait to get out of Oz , it's slowly but surely become a country I just don't want to be in anymore. Totally agree with you about the "wokeness" and it just seems like a no brainer moving to somewhere like Malaysia 👍🏝️
Thanks for your comment & it's been interesting how I'm hearing similar thoughts from others like us too. Hope it works out for you and you find a place you love.
Jack.. thanks for ur positive comments... Any country in the world will have it's up's and down..
I believe since ur working in center of KL... Due to convenience, time and travel factor u put up at ... KL... There are so many low rise accomodations.. around greater kl which provides.. scerene environment.. that most expat dont know... When they hit Malaysia it's bout city center... Give me million i wont choose anywhere around that damn twin towers😄... I rather choose places like country heights in Kajang... Do check out bro... Life needs to be less hectic
Haha very true - thanks for your comment.
Yes i absolutely agree. Unfortunately I have to go into the office 3 times a week, so location is the most important to me. If i had full location independence I'd definitely move further out. I've been to Kajang, very nice!
#loveyoubro..just takecare and enjoy your stay in KL MALAYSIA..
Thank you mate.
The point on work culture is interesting ....
The 11th point may be an addendum in capital ADDENDUM !
good one - thanks for watching!
You should explore the islands in Malaysia because they are more interesting than the beaches in the city
absolutely! I went to Langkawi and really loved it.

Hi Jack , I am new to your channel, and you got me excited for the idea, your content delivery is great... So i have no idea if you mentioned what type of work you do in Kuala Lampor ? And if i wat to search for a job how can i do it in the area on interior design or design (Website name? or recruitment agencies?) Help appreciated :)
Thank you, appreciate you watching. I work for a finance company as a writer / content producer. Design I am not an expert in but I would suggest trying Jobstreet (like Seek in Aus) and probably LinkedIn will be your best bet.
You could also research some larger design companies in Malaysia and reach out to them directly with your portfolio. There is a HUGE market for home improvement here, especially since pretty much every condo comes furnished. Check out 'the makeover guys' would be perfect for you!
