    Kelly, You are totally correct! Creating your artistic life in sketchbooks is a great way to look back and realize all the changes and moods you've been through. I have a portrait sketchbook from 50 yrs ago that I look at every so often, not to compare but to remember. And I find that it's not too bad. 😊

    Hi Kelly. Thank you so much for your informative videos. Especially explaining what and why you do in your sketchbook book. I love drawing in my sketchbook, but I am always overwhelmed by thoughts to create a perfect art piece in my sketchbook. But you showed me to keep it simple and also as a reference book. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.

    Thank you for this video. I particularly liked the colour swatches from pictures, and the tracing around things ideas, but the one that hit home was painting what you love. That made so much sense, and gives you something you love to look back on. Thank you 😊

    Using a card with a small 1/4” hole punched in the middle laid over the target color helps isolate a color while trying to match it… painting the color directly onto the card next to the hole is quite handy, too.

      I always choose photos from magazines. My favorites are American Art Collector, Flea Market Style, Magnolia Journal and anything by Stampington & Co. Use whatever you have, you can always find something beautiful to swatch from.

    It’s hard for me to fill a sketchbook because I feel like it has to be all filled with beautiful art and look serious. I know it could look anyway I want, but that little critic in my head makes me feel that way and it’s so unnecessary.🤷🏾 It’s just my sketchbook and I should feel like I can do anything in it.
    Also, your sketchbook is so lovely and the effort you put into it is amazing.

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First of all, love your @ handle, made me laugh! Secondly a sketchbook is just a practice, no perfection. If you say that over and over, it gets a lot easier to just do everything and anything inside your sketchbook.
      Thank you about my sketchbook. The key has been to keep it on my table, in my face so I reach for it all the time. One thing every couple of days will fill it quite quickly.

    9:40a CDT from Texas. Great sketchbook tour. The descriptions of how and why made me watch a second time! Thank you for the encouragement too! My favorite was the birds however, I followed your 100 days project. 3 more pages to complete before I have a handmade (by me) sketchbook of leaves and color studies from my own palette. Great inspiration!

    That first exercise is gold! Thank you so much for sharing it. Looks like a fun way to learn color mixing. I always go back to front in my sketchbooks, just because... haha You can always either paste or tape something else over a failed painting, or paint over it using gouache or watercolor ground. Great video!

    Hi, I just found your channel and what an inspiration you are!!! I am learning watercolor and I have been practicing how to manage water volume and ways to use the brushes to draw with them... but I´ve been wondering what else could I do to learn more things (I paint in pastel media but for some reason I did not have to make much effort to learn how to use it and be happy with the results). I think that your channel and points of view are absolutely fascinating including your books reviews. So thanks from South America, Chile, with all my heart!!!

    Thanks for the inspiring ideas. Question. In your Palette Play, do you include notes about what pigments you use? I think you successfully mixed the colors, but can you easily do it again without notes? My paint selection is still small so I generally know what I used but I suspect you have a lot of tubes from a lot of suppliers. How do you remember what worked?

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question. Sometimes I do add notes, but for most of my sketchbooks I am using a specific palette of colors so can recreate most of them. As I am trying out more and more brands, I do include notes from time to time just to remind myself, especially on a color I really loved creating. Thank you.

    This was so helpful thank you. I dabbled in watercolours about 30 years ago and have periodically returned to them, but I was never consistent enough to practice. A sketch book is exactly what I need to do in order to learn, shake off my perfectionist straight jacket and just play and have fun without worrying about the outcome!

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The sketchbook is a great place to just give yourself permission to do something else. As a photo realist it allowed me the freedom to be less detail oriented and just look for shapes and color. Enjoy the process and I'm so glad you were inspired!
