    Oooo, I would absolutely love to see the "Sketchy" sketchbook! I'm sure there are all sorts of tips, notes and such in there that would help us. I hate that we are our own worst critics! That frog, and several other paintings in there looked great to me, but you disliked them. The dragon, etc. If I were that good, Denise... I'd probably never put down my brush. You are SO good. I wish you could see your artwork the way we see it, but I guess we are all like that. Thank you so much for being you, and sharing what you do and learn with us. You really are a treasure! Love from Kansas. 🌻

    I swear if you turned the sketchbooks into actual books, they would fly off the shelf. I would love to just look through the details of these and read just a little explanation next to some of them of what the animal actually is, and what water colours you used and how you went about it these are all incredible. I literally couldn’t see the ones that you weren’t happy aboutwhat you were talking about, but an artist can always see when things off in their own work

    I think you should share your sketchy sketchbook. Many beginner artists see all these beautiful sketchbooks with well finished paintings and they think that that’s how a sketchbook should look like. A more messed up sketchbook would help drive the point through that a sketchbook is meant to be experimental, not finished.

    I used to be opposed to multiple sketchbooks at the same time because it felt important that everything be ordered chronologically, but eventually I wanted to have drawing paper and watercolor paper and now I like having a variety of sizes to pick from. I think at first I needed to prove to myself that I could finish a sketchbook but now I'm more flexible on it which is more fun.
    Also - crested screamer!!! ahhhh! best animal name ever! I'm somewhat frightened by surprisingly large birds

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I totally hear you! I thought I'd never finish anything if I juggled more than one at a time. It's been the opposite for me, which is great 🥰
      And birds have the best names. I think it is very wise to have a health respect of the dinosaur kin that still walk the plant 😆💜

    Hullo Denise, I remember when a sketchbook was for working out problems and trying new techniques. I even used one for swatching different brands of watercolor paints! I enjoyed seeing so many different ideas that you worked out, Thanks! I have also covered a sketchbook page or three in past books! I have even used gesso and watercolor ground to cover horrible pieces that I did not want to see the light of day much less by anyone else! I do like that you mixed your mediums and are not completely rigid in your sketchbook practice.
    Thanks and have yourself a Lovely Day!

    Thank you so much for sharing your journey! It was really fun to see your growth. It was great that you were also able to see improvement for yourself! I am also slow at completing sketchbooks (one took 2 years to complete lol) but I'm coming to terms with my own pace as an artist and learning to accept that. Personally, I would love to see the sketchy sketchbook too, I find that these sketchbook tours are very inspiring! Sketch with me videos are also a fun idea too!

    So many beautiful sketches and paintings here! I'm having a hard time picking a favorite, but I gotta say I often also really liked the ones that you weren't 100% satisfied with. I think sometimes we are our own greatest critics. ☺ I haven't finished any of my sketchbooks yet, so the 1.5 years that it took you to finish this one does not seem like a long time to me. 😅
    By the way, the flamingo stepping on the other one feels like sibling energy to me. 😂
    I almost never paint animals, but whenever I watch your videos, I feel inspired to do so and have a bunch of interesting animals in mind. I needa go and find some good otter reference images now! 😁

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there! Thank you. For that one, I actually had to combine several references and fill in the gaps because I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I would have been looking on Pixabay and Google if that helps any!

  • @joykruczay
    @joykruczay 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Denise, I am both inspired and intimidated by your sketchbook! It made me aware of the "Embrace Opacity" palette, so thank you. My question is related to the highlights on the animals. You seem to be able to pick the perfect area to leave unpainted (or very light). Is this from photographs or your experience? Even though I have been painting for years, I have a tendency to be to literal to the photo, and shy away from white highlights, which could build the form more convincingly. When I place very light highlights on dark or mid value areas, they seem to look unnatural.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, Joy. Though remember this is NOT my sketchy sketchbook. I specifically made this one to be nice to flip through. Please don't be intimidated! As for the highlights, it's both from reference and from practice. I don't always leave enough highlights, so that's where white gouache comes in, though I do try to use it sparingly. If your references are lacking contrast, you can always try to do a little edit to raise the highlights. Also make sure your darks are dark enough to provide that contrast! :)
