The blurriness of the shoe doesn't mean that you can't get it much sharper, it means that you would probably have to focus on the object the edge. It's very obvious that it's not just typical smearing and lack of clarity when it comes to edge sharpness, but it looks rather out of focus. What this means is that Canon is much better at having a flatter field and the Samyang has a lot of field curvature. A common thing in lenses, but obviously the premium lenses have optical designs that correct that. That 85 RF L is real expensive, but it really appears like they went all the way with it. Untouchable sharpness - check. Great bokeh - check. Very few aberrations - check. Close to zero field curvature - check. I guess that's the reason why it's so massive.
Brilliant video Shane! I don’t blame you for having a hard time choosing - I own the 1.2L and I truthfully didn’t even realise the Samyang was an autofocusing lens that was so much smaller and lighter. The canon definitely has the edge on sharpness, contrast, compression and bokeh, but I feel like any lens this expensive kind of needs to be glued to my camera to truly get the moneys worth out of it! If I could find the Samyang used and pay a price for it that I could resell it for, I might be tempted to get it as well and see if it finds a place in my bag - possibly for more casual shoots for my family and save the 1.2 for paid work… I too am waiting for companies like Sigma to adapt their 85 1.4 (and their 35 1.2!) to RF, that moment can’t come soon enough!
The feeling is mutual! Totally feel like it should be glued to my camera and using it all the time, but I just don't get it out as much as a should. The 50 is glued to my camera and usually a wide angle... Hoping for other 85mm options soon!
It’s tempting to get Samyang due to massive price difference but imagine later down the line Canon releases a firmware basically bricking non-Canon RF lenses, including this one. I find it a very realistic scenario considering latest developments with third party RF lenses. Some people are already reporting issues with this lens mounted on Canon R bodies.
Well, then u will end up with Manual focus 85mm f1.4 lens. It wont be surprise as Canon is not exactly high on business ethics, constantly lying and cheating its customers, removing 10 years old features just to resell them as 'new option' later. Really sad for a market leader. Wont be a market leader for too long tho.
Great comparison Shane. For me, I love the 85mm focal length but due to space I don’t use it all the time. The Samyang is plenty good enough for me for weddings and portraits. Even though the canon lens is a little bit more superior lens, when you account for the weight and cost it’s not four times better than the Samyang lens.
I decided a 85mm prime was my next lens. One day B&H had a used like new Samyang for sale ($600) and I was so tempted to get it, but figured I would rather be safe than sorry and let it go to continue to save for the RF85mm 1.2 I ended up kinda kicking myself for letting that go because you cant buy it anywhere, and most ebay actions if you find it were going for more $ for a lens with more wear. Fast forward to last week B&H has these now for sale NEW for $800 so more than MSRP but still 1/3 the price for the RF85mm. I picked it up, and I am SO HAPPY with it. I just did a concert shoot with it, and it was by far my best and favorite lens. I have 5 other RF L series lens and the speed, bokeh, and character of this lens beat them all. So I am not sure I want to get the RF85 anymore, but may very well take my savings and put the RF50mm 1.2 in my bag. I actually do not use lens profile correction in lightroom for this lens, as I like the natural character it creates. As for being soft, I have not super pixel peeped, but it looks really sharp to me. So maybe there is a bit of luck of the draw in QC and some of us get better ones than others?
Nice comparison Shane, I purchased the Samyang on a try before you buy basis but had to let it go in favour of the RF85mm 1.2L. It's a pity as the Samyang handles so well, it's light and very well balanced on my R5, however after testing it properly, I found with my Commercial work that the yellow/green warmth of the images is a pain to constantly adjust in post, also at distance the Samyang needs at least f2.8 or higher to maintain sharpness, the lens also suffers quite badly from field curvature and that is the reason your shoes were becoming soft at the edges of the frame. Don't get me wrong, for the money the Samyang is a great buy and if you're using it for general photography up to 25 feet, then it's a good buy. The 85mm Sigma DN for Sony that you mention is an extremely sharp and a well balanced lens, but really suffers with barrel distortion, so one maybe to avoid if you shoot a lot of architecture or straight lines.
@@ShaneLongPhotography Definitely, indeed I compared the RF85mm against the 85mm Zeiss Otus and the Samyang, the RF and Otus both were so close in their results, especially colour rendition it was hard to tell them apart, but then these lenses are world class. The Samyang is such a good lens, and for weddings will be well suited, but if using it in conjunction with say your RF50mm, then you may have your work cut out in post adjusting the colour in post.
Really great comparison in this video, as for the autofocus during the movement,lens/camera communication scenario. I’ve seen Gmaster on Sony vs this lens on e-Mount as well and they both had their strong suits vs some delay. However, back to this video, there were some good contrast shots the Rokinon had vs Canon’s white balance difference with a bit of sharpness
Hi.. i own the samyang rf 85mm f1.4 for my canon R6.. my firmware is 1.4… now the new firmware is out which is 1.5.2.. i am just worried that my samyang lens might have lens compatibility issues with the new firmware.. which firmware did u use for the shoot.?
I was worried about the same thing. When new cameras come out, will it be able to update?? I wasn't able to check the firmware on it it as I couldn't get my hands on the dock for it. They were either sold out or discontinued... Anyway, great thought. Hope you are enjoying it!
Holding it sideways like that, have you thought of getting the battery grip? That really helps with the vertical ergonomics and not having to contort your wrist.
@@ShaneLongPhotography yeah it’s definitely a personal taste thing. I like the grips so both of mine have them. I got the 85 mm 1.2 DS and love it, but it is not something I use every day. Thinking about getting the 24 to 105mm f/2.8 over the F/4 version.
Great comparison video. It’s just too late that I just saw your video between RF 85 1.2 and the Samyang 85 1.4. For the price, size and weight, Samyang looks great. I admit the 1.2 is bar-none the best looking but without comparing it with the 1.2, the Samyang isn’t a slich either. Hopefully, Samyang/Rokinon comes back in the market with the RF AF lens.
Great comparison. The margins are so small. I think the sweet spot would be the Sigma 1.4 DN. It is more difficult for you, having the best lens in your hand a taking a slight step back as slight as it is. The great thing about the Samyang is that you can at least choose what your priority is. ie. razor sharpness or that little bit of extra separation. After getting my first dream lens, I quickly learned that my subjects were not as excited as I was about how my lens was able to show every line on their face, and every pour on their skin:-)
With autofocus the Canon is likely the best one out there. Am curious how Canon glass would stack up against a Zeiss Planar 85 f/1.4 though, but that one is EF only afaik.
Does it still work with new Firmwares on R6 / R5? I am thinking about getting it used, but I fear that the newer camera firmwares will kill autofocus or sosmething.
Thanks for this great comparison! I have the Samyang and I love it!! Of course it would be embarrasing if the canon for 4-5 times the price wouldn´t be a bit sharper and with better overall performance. But for me, considering the look of the photos without zooming in 300%, the size weight and of course the price, the Samyang is the best 85mm out there. Sorry that I´m so enthusiastic ;-).
Hey Martin! Thanks for sharing! Great to hear from someone who has been using the lens and really likes it! Some great points there. Happy photographing!
I have the Samyang 85mm RF in the UK and the dock, it works well but not as well I think for high-speed shooting as I'd like. But really, I don't shoot at highspeed and use the 85mm for non-pro portraits. So far, I'm not convinced to switch to any of the canon options apart from the RF version which I could never justify on cost.
The Samyang only shows its flaws when pixel peeping. 90% of the time it wouldn't matter to the untrained eye which makes the Samyang worth the money. For hobbyists like me, you can't go wrong with this lens. For professionals, if you have the budget go for the Canon and then get the Samyang if you need a second 85mm.
Great points! For a lot of people of think the Rokinon is great option and allows them access to portrait photography that is at another level from what they were doing before. I think think you are right about the Canon 85 being more for the the serious professional that is making a living from it!
Everyone please tell me how to buy this lens. Amazon currently stops selling this one and neither do other stores. What a sad story! Same story for Canon eos R.
Hey Shane, did you know that Samyang brought out a Mk II version of the 85mm f1.4 that is smaller (72mm filter thread vs 77mm), lighter (now only 568g) and it has faster silent AF due to a new linear STM? I would love to see how the Mk II compares with the Canon RF 85mm f1.2 and with the Mk I Samyang. From other reviews I have seen I can tell you now that even the Mk II Samyang is not going to be as sharp as the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN, but it is cheaper and lighter, and it has faster and more consistent AF...Even better than Sony's much more expensive GM version.
Have you noticed any focus issues with the Samyang? Many R5/R6 users are reporting the Samyang is not auto focusing properly and/or being bricked since the latest camera body updates. My samyang is definitely not behaving correctly since I updated both my R6's.
I have sammy 85 ef mount and yes, its not sharp at all on r6 amd r6mkii. Pitty coz its light lens, ideal for travel and work. But this way ill sell it likely.
excellent review, thanks! After watching this, I am convinced it is not worth the extra 2,000 for the Canon. The Samyang does the job, and is considerably smaller and lighter.
Hello! Sorry for the slow reply. I took a break from TH-cam! Sounds like with the new Canon firmware the Samyang doesn't work right anymore. I already returned the lens or I could look into it!
great video Shane! thank you! i wonder how the old canon 85 1.8 would perform in this test... maybe consider making another video with all the smaller 85 optins? you have also the viltrox and the youngnuo and the 2 canons there. im with sony now so i use the sigma dg dn and it is graet but i do want to move back to canon and that 85 mm is a big Q mark there for me at this point in time.
It would be rally fun to see how those 85's stack up. I used to own that Canon 85 1.8 at one point. It has SO much CA and the AF died on my more than once. Thanks for the comment!
Interesting test. On test charts on the digital picture website there is virtually no difference in terms of sharpness between this and the canon, especially in the center and middle of the frame. In your tests the sharpness is way off regardless of position. I wonder if this is a quality control issue on the part of rokinon.
Thank you for this comparison. Yeah I always thought the Samyang/Rokinon seemed a little soft in comparison. And call me crazy, but in some of those shots there was a green cast or something off looking when looking at your face between the two pictures. Yeah...I don't think I'll be letting my go of my Canon RF 85mm F1.2 any time soon. Its too good of an optic.
No lens profile for correction, so heavy vignetting. But AF and aperture adjustment works. Just got mine and tried with both my R6 and R6ii. I am a happy owner. 😊😊
Luckily in South Korea, there’s no problem of getting a lens station. I am not sure whether selling a lens station has something to do with the lawsuit claim with Canon but hopefully Samyang sells it more freely. After all, it’s not a lens anyway.
nice review thank you for doing this. I like the F2 but when you look at it why would you have a lens F1.2 and shoot it at F2 ? or even f1.4 to F2 that's the point of a prime ? I went for the 28-70 F2 as it gives me a bigger range . but it is heavy and I feel you do ned a battery grip to help balance it it also gives a little more leverage / more movement with your hand. b ut I was looking for a 85mm prime as a want and not a need so still unsure but thanks for your input you showed in the reel world Colours / image are better with the Canon for sure but like you said $2100 different !
Great call on the 28-70! I have hear nothing but amazing things on that lens! Glad the review was helpful. A lot of times I am shooting wide open, but there are times where I move in closer to a subject for a head shot and want more of the face in focus and don't want to swap lenses, so shooting at f2 or more is desired. Quicker for me to stop down than swap lens. Hope that makes sense. All the best!
@@ShaneLongPhotography stopping down make perfect sense in that way . The depth of focus is what's important to the image and what your trying to get.. if they bring a 135mm out I may drop the 70-200 for that one
Uggh my samyang is now a brick. It no longer is read by the canon on the latest firmware. It’s a shame. Anyone else have this issue? I could degrade the firmware on the camera but it’s not ideal. I’ll probably have to get the canon soon.
@@ShaneLongPhotography yeah, it could change again with the new firmware. I ended up buying the canon version and it is truly amazing. But if the lens starts working I’ll sell it.
There is no doubt that Canon is a much better lens. Bokeh looks better even at 1.4. Great sharpness right to the edges. Is it wort that much money? That might be debatable :D
I love how this third party co. is giving these big dogs a run for their money! When you have to pixel peep to compare lenses with a 4X price difference, that's pretty much telling us (we hobbyist, that is) all we need to know right there. I've had the 24mm 1.4 for years now. Just got their 14mm 2.8 and it's looking great (day one. Still testing) and now thinking about adding the 85mm 1.4 to the herd. I guess the thinking part is over.
money no problem = canon money a concern =samyang that is usually the case......canon makes the best glass out there and when money is not an issue it is the only option.....taking into consideration that canon will last a lifetime with support and the samyang/rokinon will fail sooner or later with no support...the choice is obvious .....SAVE AND BUY THE BEST!!!!!!
It's been my experience after shooting for a couple of decades, 99.9% of the people I photograph don't care what gear I use, as long as they like what they see in the pictures. I think all the "bokeh" and bokeh balls is what we photographers care about. The only people that have asked me about the gear I use were other photographers that hired me as a 2nd shooter. So, I would say, save the money b/c most of the time, your client (and likely you in a blind test) won't see a noticeable difference in the pics between those 2 lenses and similar ones.
ok it's my 5th time watching this video. I got the Viltrox 85mm 1.8 and it's amazing, but couldn't' find the samyang locally anymore. But, i went nuts and bit the bullet and got the 85mm 1.2 RF, it arrives tomorrow before 5pm from fedex. Then i went to brose CL for fun, and BAM there was a samyang 85mm 1.4, but the guy's selling it close to retail. I don't think the RF85mm will be a bad choice, but for a non pro shooter, it's kinda a over kill. I was also struggling between the RF 50 1.2 and RF 85 1.2, I love the 85mm range for more unique photos of my children but the 50mm is a much more practical length. Eventually i'll need to add the 50mm 1.2, but will use the 1.8 for now. Keep up the great videos! love all of them!
Totally understand your dilemma!! Have you started using the 85 1.2 yet? Thoughts? The lens is crazy good. I got it out at this weekend's wedding and it didn't come off my camera. I think I took like 1,300 photo with it. Just has such a great pop to it. Happy shooting!
@@ShaneLongPhotography thanks for taking time to reply! i got the RF85 1,2 about a week ago and it's on my camera non stop. I'd say i wish i rented it or borrowed my friend's copy. It's freaking huge, like way too big compared to say the samyang (which showed up on my local craigslist after i got the RF) and viltrox. The IQ is great but the truth is family and friends won't notice the difference between RF and viltrox and samyang. But i'm going to suck it up and use it, it's a wonderful lens but a bit obnoxious for candids or street style. But i can't return it so i'm just going to enjoy it and add the 50 1.2 shortly. keep up the great content!
Try swapping the RF 85 1.2 and 28-70 f2.0 mid session. These are so huge, it is beyond ridiculous when you see them both on a photographer. They live permanently attached on two separate R5 bodies my fellow photographer uses. He had to tape them up to save the barrels from dings and scratches.

Interesting! Yeah test shots versus real life are always interesting!
Hello I noticed that this lens is not available anymore on Amazon, I really like this lens! How should I buy it
Seems like it was discontinued :(
Ebay is your only hope 😢
He has grown up a lot from the last time I watched one of your videos. (Talking about your son) 🙂
I can't believe how fast the time goes! Kids are growing way too quick!
I went the same route. The 1.2 is flawless optically!
any compatibility issues with the samyang 85mm 1.4 rf on RF bodies?
Yeah and I think they are discontinued from what I hear...
No lens profile for correction, so heavy vignetting. But AF and aperture adjustment works. Just got mine and tried with both my R6 and R6ii. I am a happy owner. 😊😊
I keep hearing that the samyang has a yellow tint. That's a no go for me
You are correct. And color is important!
It does. You can even see it looking directly into the front element of the lens at certain angle😢
Luckily in South Korea, there’s no problem of getting a lens station. I am not sure whether selling a lens station has something to do with the lawsuit claim with Canon but hopefully Samyang sells it more freely. After all, it’s not a lens anyway.
Interesting! Thanks for the information!
nice review thank you for doing this.
What about chromatic aberration? I noticed it’s pretty bad in the Rokinon..
Good question. It didn't come up in the comparison shots I took, but I would guess that would be the case!
0:57 what roller bag is this?
Sorry for the slow reply! I took a break from TH-cam! That camera bag is incredible! Think Tank Photo Airport Navigator amzn.to/3fBvw3d
What camera straps are you using at the docks?
Holdfast Gear Money Maker. Buffalo leather. Hope that helps!
I was in a similar position. However, after using the Samyang I sold my canon and pocket the difference.
Good to know! Have you been happy with it?
At 3:42, Samyang at 1.4 is soft... Canon at 1.2 is very sharp...
Yep, no doubt the Canon is sharper!
How to order this lens?
So Canon has no access to the "small" and perfect Sigma DG DN 85mm f1.4?
Not yet :(
Is there distortion on the Samyang?
I didn't check. But typically 85mm doesn't have much.
Uggh my samyang is now a brick. It no longer is read by the canon on the latest firmware. It’s a shame. Anyone else have this issue? I could degrade the firmware on the camera but it’s not ideal. I’ll probably have to get the canon soon.
Really??! That's crazy. Maybe thats why they discontinued it...
Agreed! I am still debating it myself... Have a great day!
The Sigma 85mm 1.4 ef is a better buy.
That's a great lens too!
And I would still buy Canon RF 85mm f2
That's a great lens! I just used it for the first time the other day!
@@ShaneLongPhotography
What lens did you use in your starting intro for this video?? - The video and bokeh looks amazing..
Is this lens discontinued?
Sadly I think it might be...
EF 85 1.4 L IS would be better then samyang. I know the weight is tempting but L glass lasts generations.
Agreed. The Canon 85 1.4 is so good.
Has this lens been discontinued by Samsung?
I think so for the RF mount :(
I love how this third party co. is giving these big dogs a run for their money!
Great thought! Competition is good for us! Would love to see even more options out there!
money no problem = canon
money a concern =samyang
that is usually the case......canon makes the best glass out there and when money is not an issue it is the only option.....taking into consideration that canon will last a lifetime with support and the samyang/rokinon will fail sooner or later with no support...the choice is obvious .....SAVE AND BUY THE BEST!!!!!!
Spot on. The support thing is another think I am thinking over. Canon's service is SO good. Just like the lens!
if you shoot at f2 get the rf 85mm f2 and it's gonna look better than the samyang
Good call! Just got that lens too and its great.
Some truth there! They just want to know if the look good in the photo :)
What I notice most is the difference in the colors! Canon's lens produces much richer colors.
You nailed it!
wow that R5 sure shoots fast compared to my R
It is quick! The R takes great photos though too!
@@ShaneLongPhotography I really love the pictures my R takes.
Great video thank you.
Thanks so much for the kind comment!
ok it's my 5th time watching this video.
Keep the Canon because you are sacrificing a little bulk for superior image quality.
Agreed! That is exactly what I am going to do!
Canon slaughters the sayang!
Yeah the sharpness, color, and bokeh are definitely on another level!
And your wallet.
This type of lens is about 1.2.
Agreed! I am all about 1.2.
Great review…Canon is sharper…No doubt..But .Is it $2000 better…???That’s crazy bang for the buck….
Right?! Thats the big question!
Thanks
You're welcome!
thats crazy! 1.2 so tack sharp,.
It's just absolutely incredible how sharp it is at 1.2!!
sigma's never gonna release glass for canon RF, sorry!
Looks like they are starting to now! Hope they get FF lenses soon!
@@ShaneLongPhotographyI wont bet my money on that. At least not before canon rf mount patent expired 😢
