I just bought the Sony f1.8 and returned it to get the Rokinon 85mm f1.4 (just got it). After seeing the out-of-the-box color rendition and that the AF is actually faster than both Sony's in certain situations, I was sold.
Most lenses work well in standard situations. Most of the time you get to the differences in extreme situations: extremely low light, extremely bright light, stray light, sunlight, fluorescent light, extreme high or low contrast, fast-moving subjects. Then you might run into trouble focusing, experience flaring, ghosting, etc. The next thing you want to know is how it contributes to your workflow. You want something that gets to the desired result in a minimum amount of time. So sometimes an extra button or switch does the trick. You also might want to use the lens that works similar to the thing you are shooting most of the time with. You want to do it always the same way and not to think about where the button on this lens is compared to your other lenses.
Followed your channel in few months, and I ended with buying sony a7iii, sony 85mm f1.8 and tamron 28-75. My camera before was sony a6000 with sigma 30mm f1.4
This video seals it for me. If you don't need video, there is almost no reason to get the Sony's over the Samyang (Rokinon). Samyang had faster autofocus than the GM, less rounded bokeh and slightly less sharpness at 1.4. The differences become less as you go to 1.8 and beyond. For me, that doesn't justify the massive price difference. The only thing the Sony 1.8 has on the Samyang is the autofocus, but less difference in still photos. That's a worthy sacrifice for that extra stop of light IMO.
From my experiences from Nikon, Canon and Sony, 85 f/1.4 lenses are always slower. I think it's the nature of the build of the lens. But, it's sharper at f/1.8 vs the native f/1.8 lenses.
after 3-4 years of using Samyang 85 1.4, as long as the object doesn't move too fast, it could provide good enough image quality and focus performance. And it is comfortable for low light situation. At its price, a big bang for money comparing to GM or GM II. Of course, sometime you may wonder if the 85 1.8 could focus a little bit faster and light your camera bag too.
Used 85/1.8 under the rain, had no problems at all. Also, I own both lenses and I would not say Samyang looks any better in terms of build quality (it's good for both lenses).
@@ronkumar1093 it's a very difficult choice. I have both lenses and have no plans to sell either of them. If you don't need precise autofocus in AF-C mode, then Samyang is a good choice otherwise I would pick Sony
That's the original Samyang 85mm f1.4...They are now on the MkII version which is apparently much better for AF accuracy and speed...So It would great to see you review this too.
I wish we had more time with her! Definitely would've love to get her input on the lens. But we shot all the test stuff in a couple hours before catching our flights lel

I just love the size and weight of the the Sony 85 f1.8,,,, it's perfect for my A7r lll. and I also love my 55 f1.8 ,,,,, I guess I'm tired of heavy glass. now I wish Sony would put out a 35 f1.8 that competes with the image quality of the 55 and 85 f1.8 lenses. and also small and light. but for now I'm using my 28 f2
I guess you did not keep the same focus drive speed in both cameras. The one with Sony lenses must be on Medium, or Slow focus drive speed. If it was that slow, it would not give that smooth and precise transition. It would hunt a bit. Can you check again?
why didn't you include the Batis in the test since its already in your hands? it would have been nice to see the difference especially compared to the 1.8
Great review, thanks! Made me keep my reliable Sony 85mm f1.8 . I also tested 1.4 vs 1.8 and saw that "bokeh" looks very similar. ISO performance is not an issue with Sony, so my main focus is how round bokeh is when you stop down the lens (I hate hexagon bokeh!). And you need to stop it down if you shoot more than one person to make both persons faces in focus. Also focus reliability is top priority - no matter that your picture bokeh will be nicer, if your subject face will be completely out of focus :D was thinking to sell my 85/1.8 and get samyang, but after your video - I will think no more :D
I'm definitely looking at either the Rokinon or Samyang 1.4 The 1.8 focuses faster because it has less glass and the difference in terms of focus between 1.4 and 1.8 is surprisingly a lot, imho :)
Samyang/Rokinon/Walimex is the best bang for buck and has been for many many years. Thank you Samyang. You've made me a lot of money via professional shoots.
With the Sony f1.8 being both sharp and affordable, Samyang tried to fill a space that wasn't really there. The thing about Samyang lenses (and any other non-Sony E-lens) is that camera firmware updates can really mess things up. I really like my Samyang 50/1.4, but it's totally unreliable since the A9 v5 update. I wrote the company, and they're working on a fix, meanwhile the lens is just sitting on my desk...
Curious to see that little difference between Zeiss Batis and Sony 85. It's essentially the same exact lens design. You should make a video comparison.
Gaston.......where did you bought your 8 4 mm 1.4 i always wanna get one....Sony the best 85mm 1.4 GM Slow wy,,,,need bigger motor maybe the glass .........Glass glass glass SIZE size.
Both f1.4 lenses are at their sharpest at f/4. And at that particular f-stop, there is noticeably less sharpness with the Samyang in the corners, and a tiny bit less sharpness in the middle. Surprisingly however, with the Sony f/1.8, it is a little bit sharper in the middle and slightly sharper in the corners, than the Sony f/1.4 at f/4. It is however, marginally less light-sensitive overall, with a slightly lower t-stop rating (ref: dxomark), of around 1/5 of an f-stop. T=1.8 vs T=1.5 - This means that for any given combination of shutter speed and aperture, the superior f/1.4 will give you a lower ISO. eg 100 vs 120. This small difference is barely noticeable though, and given that the Sony f/1.8 is a slightly sharper lens, then unless you are a bokeh obsessive, the Sony f/1.8 is probably not only a more practical lens than the Sony f/1.4, but it's also US$1,100 cheaper. I'm keeping my Sony f/1.4 however, because it has an external aperture ring which I really like to use, and it's the only lens that gets truly circular bokeh balls at f/1.4 - This is something of course, that most lay people would say: "so what".
Exactly what I needed to know! Thanks for the honest review! I do weddings and personal branding and need a new primary lens. I think we’ll be rocking the 85 1.8 for the next good while. I’ve played with it for a week and it is soo nice!
I'm considering getting a FF lens for my sony a6400 (so i can have lenses for a future FF camera, and also why not). the funny thing is, when you start to have a few regular goto lenses, as i do now, and think about the future, while you are also deciding what filter set up to get (as I am now) things like the filter size matter....somewhat. At the moment my largest lens filter size is 67mm on my Rokinon 12mm wide. that Rokinon 85 has a 72mm filter thread whereas that sony 85 has 67mm filter thread. I Can Not decide if I should go ahead and "Filter up" to a master 72mm (or even 77) filter set up with various step up rings, or use 67mm filter set up as my main set up for now. I'm going to order filters today or tomorrow, and I'm not getting cheap ones so it's one of those photography gear puzzles. In the UK the Rokinon f1.4 and the Sony f1.8 are both £599. At the same price point is it basically then a comparison of a bigger aperture and some nice colouring vs weight savings and autofocus accuracy?
I'm so confused between Samyang 85 1.4 and Sony 85 1.8. for a7iii Is the difference between the two massive? I prefer going with native sony glass but then f1.4... at this price is just unbeatable... Can you suggest the best option? Please
Great stuff Jason, Very impressive Rokinon.... Really make the Sony GM look very overpriced. 05:33 - The Sony GM has worse Chromatic Abberation on the edges of Kitty's jumper, the jacket sleeve ZIPPER & in the bokeh outlining on the right??? :O The slightly warmer cast of the Rokinon also appears to render colours a bit nicer for portraits than the GM ?
I thought this was Kitty's movie so I clicked it. But I do sometimes watch some of your videos Jason! But holy crap, that was some confident walking by Kitty...
Is there any chance, Jason that you could make a comparison between this awesome Sony 85mm f1.8 (on a a7xxx) vs Sigma 56mm f1.4 (mounted on a a65/64) & why not the same Sony 85mm G on the a65/64. All of this in the same way as this very video, bokeh-ball, focus speed and all that. I'm in the edge of replacing my Sigma 56mm with the Sony 85mm but I need you, exactly you to do this comparison, pretty please 🙏🏼
I'll buy Rokinon for the colors and bokehs it produced in your videos. G master couldn't win my heart at all on those areas. No reason to go for G master.
Wow, I love the contrast on the Samyang! I used to stay away from Rokinon/Samyang because of bad c/a but these tests look great!! I actually prefer the bokeh, too!
I really didn’t like the Rokinon Cine Lenses wide open and kinda turned me off from them. Thanks to your review and a few others I think I may get this lens as well as Xeens in the future. I guess Rokinon is stepping up their game.
It was between the rokinon and the 85mm1.8. Went for a used 85mm 1.8 for 400 bucks because I really didn't need that 1.4. I prefer the faster af, the much much lighter body cuz I'm carrying it around all day, af mf button and the useful focus hold button. I hate heavy lenses on the Sony body without the battery grip which adds even more weight to balance it out
Jason, could you do a video about changing lenses? The info, tips, do's & dont's, etc?? It would be an immense help personally since i use a 6400. Hehe. Thanks and more power!
What are your thoughts on the Rokinon 35 1.4? Have you got your hands on it yet? I'm not really sold on the 28 f2.0 and am pretty close to shopping for a 35, let me know your thoughts Jason!
Hey!! I love your videos. Thank you for making them. They are honestly so helpful. I was wondering what lens you’re filming with in this video? I hope you don’t mind me asking. 😊
Jason, I don't know what your intent was, but for the first 5 minutes of the video, all you did was further convince me to purchase the Sony 85mm f1.8. Have an a6300 and wish Sony would come out with a85mm f1.8 OSS for the aps-c bodies.
Great review! Jason I already own the Batis 85mm for my A7iii and love it, but sometimes do wish I had the creamy bokeh of an f/1.4. Glad that you see the difference between the Batis and the Sony f/1.8, I do too. Also Batis has stabilization so it works better on my old a6000.
I thought nobody would remember that! Maybe! My wedding content didn't do so well last time so I stopped. I might have to come in at it with a different approach!
Hey man! How are you? One thing I want to know about the Samyang: How's the manual focus ring? Is it long to pull focus? Because I have a Sigma 30mm which is basically impossible to use manual focus, because it is tooooooo long! Thank you
I've heard that it is one of the better focus by wire rings. Very smooth and damped well. Heard no bad things about it, but that's just my experience. I'm thinking of buying it, but have yet to pull the trigger.
The Sony 85mm 1.8 is a beast of a lens for the price. When I had my Sony, that was one of the first lenses I picked up. Great comparison Jason, shout out to Kitty for cameo! Also embrace the gas, there’s no way to stop it lol

Thanks in advance 😊
Great review, could you do one on Samyang AF 45mm f/1.8 FE, I'm really curious about this lens, since it's really compact and it looks very promising.
Carlos Rosa its a great lens man. Light, portable, sharp, great depth of field. Comparable to the 55 zeiss but way cheaper
It’s so pleasing to watch, love your personality
I'm so confused between Samyang 85 1.4 and Sony 85 1.8. for a7iii
Is the difference between the two massive?
I prefer going with native sony glass but then f1.4... at this price is just unbeatable...
Can you suggest the best option? Please
I don’t know about Rokinon but some of my sigmas outperform my Sony’s. The Sony 84mm 1.4 is just a slow lens. Great video Jason
Do you update the firmware in the rokinon for vetter video autofocus?
Where is the sony lens made? I have the kit lens and a7ii are made in Thailand. Amazon didn't say where they were made.
Great stuff Jason,
Very impressive Rokinon.... Really make the Sony GM look very overpriced.
05:33 - The Sony GM has worse Chromatic Abberation on the edges of Kitty's jumper, the jacket sleeve ZIPPER & in the bokeh outlining on the right??? :O
The slightly warmer cast of the Rokinon also appears to render colours a bit nicer for portraits than the GM ?
What's sort of cream is that on the top of your lip ?
I thought this was Kitty's movie so I clicked it. But I do sometimes watch some of your videos Jason!
But holy crap, that was some confident walking by Kitty...
Haha appreciate it thank you! Ive been practicing my strut
Great stuff, brother !
Is Samyang 85mm1.4 going to work with auto distortion correction on Sony cameras?
I am a videographer abd I am having a7iii. So which should I get samyung 85mm f1.4 or sony 85 mm f1 8.. I want good focus tracking.. Thank you..
Watch the video
I'll buy Rokinon for the colors and bokehs it produced in your videos. G master couldn't win my heart at all on those areas. No reason to go for G master.
You should compare the Sony 90mm f2.8 G OSS. It’s sheer sharpness is amazing for portraits
what is that on your lip Jason?
Hey jason, for overall opinion, do you think if it's worth it to switch from the FE 85 f1.8 to this Samyang f1.4?
i think if you shoot potrait, sharpness is very important. it is not worth it to upgrade
@@matthewsimcheeking4532 why? The rokinon is sharp too
Wow, I love the contrast on the Samyang! I used to stay away from Rokinon/Samyang because of bad c/a but these tests look great!! I actually prefer the bokeh, too!
Was it from the Cine Lenses? Or the ones designed for sony?
@@JasonVong The photography ones from years back. These Sony ones look fantastic! On my next gig I may rent one!
I really didn’t like the Rokinon Cine Lenses wide open and kinda turned me off from them. Thanks to your review and a few others I think I may get this lens as well as Xeens in the future. I guess Rokinon is stepping up their game.
I thought Sony came with image stabilization within the camera so it’s not necessary to have?
It was between the rokinon and the 85mm1.8. Went for a used 85mm 1.8 for 400 bucks because I really didn't need that 1.4. I prefer the faster af, the much much lighter body cuz I'm carrying it around all day, af mf button and the useful focus hold button. I hate heavy lenses on the Sony body without the battery grip which adds even more weight to balance it out
For the price, I'll stick with the Super Multi Coated Takumar 85mm f1.8. I prefer manual focus.
Wait isnt that lens radioactive or something? Or am i confusing it with another lens?
@@raggedyexynos6826 It is indeed. I have a full set of these wonderful lenses. Of course, I now glow in the dark.
@@Kthomasritchie hahaha
What about rokinon version 1 can you recommend it.. I don't have adapter for update..
Jason, could you do a video about changing lenses? The info, tips, do's & dont's, etc?? It would be an immense help personally since i use a 6400. Hehe. Thanks and more power!
Accidentally ordered Samyang 85 instead of native 85 then I saw this 🥺🥺
What are your thoughts on the Rokinon 35 1.4? Have you got your hands on it yet? I'm not really sold on the 28 f2.0 and am pretty close to shopping for a 35, let me know your thoughts Jason!
I haven't but I hear good things about it. Rokinon has made some great strides as new lenses are being released!
Great comparison! What do you think about wide angle lenses for Sony a7 III like Nikon and Sigma have 10-20mm?
Hey!! I love your videos. Thank you for making them. They are honestly so helpful. I was wondering what lens you’re filming with in this video? I hope you don’t mind me asking. 😊
what do you have stack on top left side of your lip?
You can also get a used Canon 85mm 1.2 for about 1000 used, it's incredible value for photo shooters compare to both of these.
Is autofocus sound still there .. like 50mm Samyang
its there but its soft
Jason Vong thanks for reply ! Really enjoy your work
Does Sony share the AF interface info with Samyang, like they do with Sigma and Tamron?
Jason, I don't know what your intent was, but for the first 5 minutes of the video, all you did was further convince me to purchase the Sony 85mm f1.8. Have an a6300 and wish Sony would come out with a85mm f1.8 OSS for the aps-c bodies.
bahaha Sony 1.8 is still king! best performance and price!
Omg kitty is so cute and adorable
Thanks you! meow
These third-party lenses are starting to get really good-)
Great review!
Good stuff. Hey are you still doing the picture profile test for weddings or top looks for weddings that you hinted at a whole ago?
I thought nobody would remember that! Maybe! My wedding content didn't do so well last time so I stopped. I might have to come in at it with a different approach!
@@JasonVong Hahaha. I remembered! I understand.
You won't believe what I bought yesterday.... smh
Jason Vong the zeiss 85mm lens?
worse
Jason Vong EOS RP?
Batis 85.8 is still the only option to have OSS with apsc except A6500
What is the best lanse for sony a6000 please
Will you review the Mieke 85mm f/1.8 auto focus lens coming out soon? its a $200 lens
Will this lens work on the new Sony a6100 I’m fucking new just want a good lens to photograph my dogs with a nice blurred background
I sold the Sony 1.8 for the Samyang 1.4 and then won an eBay auction by accident 😏 for the Zeiss Batis 1.8 and now I’m not sure what to keep 🙄 #firstworldproblems
Oh boy... take some photos and compare!
why isn’t the batis 85mm in this comparison video?
