These are both awesome lenses you won't have any issues with image quality from either. If you have any questions about them let me know in the comments. Amazing comparaison. Both of these lenses are fantastic however, as a portrait photographer, I had to got with both the RF 85mm 1.2 and the RF 135mm 1.8. I also have the RF 24-70mm 2.8 for my wider shots. That said, you can’t go wrong with the 28-70 f2. It’s magical.
Honestly, buy both! These lenses don't compete with each other, they complement each other. You will shoot 80-90% with the 28-70f2 and use the remaining % with the 85f1.2 for the big bang🙌 Simply perfect🤩 BTW: The only problem I currently have are chromatic aberrations with the 28-70 on 70mm/F2 and the use of a 1/4 Black Mist and Pol. filter, especially with night photography and chrome objects (rim spokes etc.). But I'm sure there are still solutions here 😅
I think they made it so big to make it more optically pure by oversizing it. They have a larger sweet spot where the previous version was not very sharp and had other issues. This one has no such limitations.
Im doing same 24 105 f4 for events (cérémonie, church,..) and 85 f1.2 for portrait and emotional moment. I also use the 100 500 when I want some compression in outdoor shots!
@ yes absolutly! I used the 70 200 f4 before and i noticed that i was everytime at 200mm! The 100 500 is way more permissive and flexible, the extra reach is very confortable and the image quality is comparable to this beautifull 85mm 1.2 trust me its a beast.
One of the first photographers on TH-cam that has a clean vibrant realistic editing style and love how you had sample work with each , very thorough 🤘🏽
Thank you very much. I appreciate the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the video! I really do try to edit the way I want rather than trying to copy trends. Welcome to the channel if it’s your first time here.
Thank you for the video enjoying it but just a couple corrections that I’ve seen so far. It looks at six minutes and 30 seconds approximately. You have the 85 mm information up when you’re talking about the 28 - 70 and also it doesn’t protrude when it focuses it protrudes when you zoom. 😮
Just got the rf 85 DS version (already own the 28-70) so excited! I got my 28-70 during the Covid years and canon Canada had some insane promo with cpl and UV filter for free.
I couldn't make up my mind so I bought both haha. The 85mm is not only good for one thing. I shoot weddings full time but I also have used it for Extreme motorsports and even sports. It can be used for all.
I still prefer f1.4 or f1.8 primes Especially EF mount glasses, so that i can use drop-in-filter adapters Single adapter with different drop-in-filters is way more cost-effective than my fear of using adapters😅
I have no clue because I don't know what you specialize in shooting. I mean it all really comes down to what you shoot. As I mentioned the 85mm is good at one thing and if that one thing is what you shoot and make money with than yes it's worth upgrading to. But if you need more versatility than the 28-70mm might be the right choice for you. What kinds of images do your clients want? Buy the lens that get's your clients the types of images they want. That's your best option.
I agree. I rock mine without any UV and or ND filters, (I use other lenses for those). So it’s optional hidden costs there. Anything can happen and it’s good to have to protect the front element, but I’ve been okay with not having any filters. I’m more of a fan of my 85, so I agree with you brotha. Great comparison video!
i would like to know what was up with Canon makin the new version of the 85 so much bigger over the older version style. Thing is huge. I always rock the battery grip with it because of that reason.
I wish I knew that too. Canon is making all their new lenses so big while Sony is making their lenses smaller. Personally I wish Canon was also making their new lenses smaller.
This really comes down to your shooting style. If you’re a fiend for bokeh and want compression get the 85. But if you want to tell an entire story get the 28-70.
I don’t really get the comparison. The lenses stand apart. Quite simply the coverage is 28-70 there is simply no 85 in the range. If you want the compression of the 85 you need the 85 or the 70-200. And then 85 does more in regard to depth of field, so again can’t really be compared.
Good comparison. however it is proven and tested. all 'UV filters' decreases image quality. better to use lens hood instead of UV filter for protection
I don't mind having lens filters on these lenses. They are already super sharp softening them a touch isn't a huge deal. Especially if you are using higher end glass like B + W. I would definitely stay away from lower and filters. Appreciate the comment. Thanks.
If 15-35mm and 28-70 are internal zoom, I'd buy them when they are on sale rightvaway, but I feel bad when I spend that much to the things are not perfect.
I have the canon 28-70 f2. It’s never leaving, and I also shoot Nikon and there new 85 1.2 is finally matching the amazing canon 1.2 now come on Sony what’s up with the new 85 1.4? I am so addicted to good glass. Thanks for the candy
Ya great lens. With the lens IS is a great choice for video work as well as photography work. I almost bought it but I decided to go with the 28-70 because that f2 max aperture. I shot with the EF 24-70 2.8 for years so I was excited to try something new.
28-70 is not sharp at all; it’s actually very soft, especially wide open. It’s definitely not the “best zoom on the market.” 24-105 f/4 is actually worlds sharper, and the new 70-200 2.8 Z is the best zoom on the market. One of the sharpest lenses ever created.
Thanks for the comment. I think you might have a bad copy of the lens send it into Canon to get it adjusted. Mine is really sharp and picks up amazing detail at f2. A little soft in the corners but overall very good. It’s easily sharper than my 24-105 f4 L.
Yes, I own both lenses and frankly, if I knew I were going to a questionable place, I’d probably just go rent em. Probably cheaper to rent than get stuff repaired later. 😂

I have the 85 f1.2, 28-70 f2 and the 135 f1.8. They all have their own distinct uses. For portraits the 85mm is still king!
Thanks for the comment. It's hard to beat that 85mm.
I have all 3 and the 85 is my favorite
Really good video on this and loved the live comparison. Thank you
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.

lol I like the way you think. Totally agree with your thoughts.
Thank you for the comparisons .... Decisions, decisions
I know that's the hardest part. I'm sure eventually you'll have both but the question is which one do you want first. lol.
I think they made it so big to make it more optically pure by oversizing it. They have a larger sweet spot where the previous version was not very sharp and had other issues. This one has no such limitations.
Totally agree. I kinda get the feeling that this 28-70mm was designed for a 100mp sensor. Maybe something we'll see in the future. Perhaps an R5s?
Im doing same 24 105 f4 for events (cérémonie, church,..) and 85 f1.2 for portrait and emotional moment. I also use the 100 500 when I want some compression in outdoor shots!
Sounds like a great setup, the 100-500mm is a good pick for compression. I haven't used it yet but it's on my list.
@ yes absolutly! I used the 70 200 f4 before and i noticed that i was everytime at 200mm! The 100 500 is way more permissive and flexible, the extra reach is very confortable and the image quality is comparable to this beautifull 85mm 1.2 trust me its a beast.

If you can, buy both. If you can't, start with 28-70.
That is good advice. 28-70mm opens more possibilities.

Oh wow nice. That sounds like a pretty sweet deal.
I have both. So i don't need to choose. The 15-35 and 70 - 200 2.8 haven't left my dry cabinet in 3 months. Lol.😂
hahahahahaha. I totally get that.
I couldn't make up my mind so I bought both haha. The 85mm is not only good for one thing. I shoot weddings full time but I also have used it for Extreme motorsports and even sports. It can be used for all.
It really is a fantastic lens for a lot of different things if you know how to use it.
@@vaskoobscura_ One of the best!

Is it worth upgrading from an 85 f1.8 or would it be better to add a 20-70?
I have no clue because I don't know what you specialize in shooting. I mean it all really comes down to what you shoot. Awesome competition there
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video.
If you can have only one the creativity range on the 28-70 is just crazy.
It would be a hard choice to pick just one for sure.
if i have 28-70, what should i get next? 50mm f1.2 or 85mm f1.2?
I don't know, depends what you shoot. The 28-70mm covers the 50mm focal range so the 85mm would give you a look you can't get with the 28-70mm.
Definitely no no to those UV filters

That's a great way to put it.
Both!
hahahahahaha. 100%
I have a set of freewell K2, but as I understand it, they are not suitable for 28-70(
The 28-70 has a 95mm front filter which is crazy. Most people will have to buy new filters to go with that lens.
I don’t really get the comparison. The lenses stand apart. Quite simply the coverage is 28-70 there is simply no 85 in the range. If you want the compression of the 85 you need the 85 or the 70-200. And then 85 does more in regard to depth of field, so again can’t really be compared.
Thanks for the comment. They only overlap in price. I wanted to share my experience with deciding which lens to buy first.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Did you hear the news. Sony is now making a 28-70nn f2.
Have you ever shot with the RF 24-70mm 2,8?
Ya great lens. With the lens IS is a great choice for video work as well as photography work. I almost bought it but I decided to go with the 28-70 because that f2 max aperture. I shot with the EF 24-70 2.8 for years so I was excited to try something new.
@@vaskoobscura_ well the RF is better than the EF, I have the RF 24-70mm 2.8 just wondering if the RF 28-70 f/2 would be worth upgrading
$200-300 for a UV filter is crazy!! Mine was like $75
I know right. Brand and filter size has a huge impact on size.
7:24 - NO!!
It’s a prime it has no internal zoom. lol
i have thr 28-70, 85 1.2 and the 70-200 f/2.8... selling my 70-200 because i do not use it at all.
I can see that. I haven't touched my 70-200 in over two years.
there is no right use em both they give you different shots and both should be in your bag
That's it. Both awesome lenses.
Keep the 85mmm EF ^^
That EF 85mm is going to be a classic one day. It produces a really cool looking image that's different from the RF. Thanks for the comment.
1.2 for photography and f2 for videography…
The 28-70mm is great for video. I totally agree.
