I feel like this is the sweet spot for price and size. As far as weddings, what combinations do you prefer… A 24 and 50? Or a 35 and 85?

SHANE! First time viewer. Like your style. Only thing I really missed is comparing the 1.4 and 1.2 both at 1.4, 1.6, 1.8. My pet peeve is OOF highlight circles' smoothness and roundness. The 1.2 will introduce diaphram blade edges to the circle but I wonder if it is less football-shaped in the extreme corners?

16:42 I got the f/1.4 and like it a lot but I've noted the 1.8 + R5MkII can be in my backpack constantly and I don't even know for sure they're in there. The 1.4 + R5MkII goes over some limit for me where I can't FORGET that it's in there. I thought I'd sell the 1.8 as soon as the 1.4 showed up but now I'm really thinking now. I won't get much for the 1.8 anyway so may keep it for walk-around (along with my 16/2.8 which I can crop to 35mm pretty easily should I wish). I like having the camera on me always. I have since the mid-90s (Yashica T5*, Contax G2, EOS3+50/1.8MkI, EOS M).

2:47 "they look very similar" except the 1.4 is onion ring city and the 1.2 is commendably smooth. Why don't you mention that for people who don't know to look for it?

Very informative comparison - thank you so much! I am not quite sure with which of the new VCM- lenses I should start: With this 50/1.4 or with the 35/1.4? In many situations the 35mm is more versatile, but I prefer the look and perspective I get with the 50mm. I already have the 50/1.8 STM, great lens for the money, but often too slow. I think the difference in focal length you mentioned is due to focus breathing. You can see this happen when you was doing your auto focus speed test Great review 👍🏼

Does this lens (1.4) come with lens hood?

I like that the 1.8 is much smaller and light weight and easier to carry around when connected to the camera. The litlle imperfections can be corrected with a picture editor quite easly I think. Good enough for me !!!

I would like some price comparison nor I have to track down something from companion. I know different vendor prices differ. Christmas pricing is much different from March.

If you don't care about video, the 1.2 beats the 1.4 in everything. I had it before when it first came out, but returned it because it back focused on my R5. Canon asked me about it, I don't know if they did something, but they just told me to send back to Adorama. IO never re-bought the lens and I bought the 85 f1.2 instead.

I just got this lens a few days ago and was able to take it out for spin today - all I can say is "WOW"! Beautiful colors, rendering, tack sharpness and great contrast. Even better, it pairs perfectly with the newly acquired RF 35mm 1.4 VCM and 24mm VCM. I'm enjoying this VCM trifecta with my C80 and can't wait for an 85mm equivalent! I have the RF 50mm 1.2 and although I love that lens to pieces, this 1.4 is sharper and has faster focusing capabilities, especially for video work! Cheers!

Best review as always. I thought I will swap 50 1.2 for 50 1.4, but after your comparison I kinda change my mind. I like the character of 50 1.2 a lil bit more. I will buy 24 1.4 vmc though.

Thanks so much for putting this together! I've got the 50mm 1.8, the ef 18-135 nano (meh), the rf 100-400 and the EF150-600 sigma. More of a wildlife fan but I'm looking for a step up in glass for my portraits. This 85 is now on my radar more seriously!

Excellent review, as always, Shane. May I request to compare the 1.4 VCM lens with 3rd party 35mm EF lens, like Tamron SP and Sigma Art. All of them are 1.4. While the 3rd party lenses are old enough, however the IQ produced by these 2 old lenses are worth comparing...! I own Tamron 35mm F1.4 and it is a superb lens on my Canon R6m2, hands down! 😊😊

Thank you very much for this comparison of the two lenses, also in text form! Many Canon photographers already have the RF 35 1.8 and will now know whether they want to change to the L lens, which is not perfect either. I don't have a 35mm, but the RF 50 1.2 and the image quality is outstanding. A little more wide angle and less weight would sometimes be good, unfortunately I still can't say 35 1.4 or 35 1.8 🤨

Think the mf thing is a feature, because the 1.8 is a makro lense and you want to be able to fokus in a slow and in many steps (for stacking as example).

Fabulous images! I recently sold all my DSLRs and EF/EF-S lenses, and picked up the R5 and R6 Mk II. The one lens I refuse to live without is the 24-105 f/4, but I was lucky to find a used 15-35 f/2.8 on B&H, for a very reasonable price, so I snapped it up immediately. Love it!!!

Good review! I just bought this lens, and it performs well. I also have the 35mm f1.8 lens, and I just completed a shoot a few days ago inside the USS North Carolina (battleship from World War II era). I was amazed at how well the 35mm held up. I am just getting acquainted with the 85mm f2. For the life of me, I cannot understand how Canon makes a decision to not include the lens hood. Well, at least Vello has a nice lens hood that fits well. I am sure the 85mm f1.2 is awesome, but my neck will appreciate the lighter weight! Thank you for a nice review of this lens.

Die VCM Objektive sind für mich indiskutabel da der Blendenring für Fotos mit Kameras die vor Juni 2024 ausgeliefert wurden nicht nutzbar ist! Auch die Aussage das der Fokus und die Blende verändert wird bei Berührung des Blendenrings wenn man zum Beispiel mit einer R5 Mark I Videos macht ist ein absolutes Ausschlusskriterium für mich und viele andere! Wenn Canon sich selbst sabotieren will dann sollen sie das tun! Es wird den Erfolg der VCM Objektive schmälern! Viele Grüße aus Deutschland!

Here in 2024 looking to buy this lens for my R52. That jello effect in the video drives me nuts. Wish Canon could fix that. I know there are work arounds but still.

Got one of these I use with the classic old Canon 50D, which does make it a bit heavy but I love to photograph storms so want heavy duty. Another pro is that this lens is weatherproof and even more so with a UV filter on front to protect the lens.
