    A lot lighter, smaller than F1.2,1.4 competitors, accurate EYE-AF, no need of adapters, good image quality. Game Over.

      Maybe not game over. What other camera manufacturers offer a 85mm 1.2. It’s silly larger and pricy AF, but if you use the 85mm in your line of work even 40% of the time, wouldn’t that be a proper investment?
      I’m only just now switching to mirrorless. I’ve had my 5D Mark fours for four years and most of my lenses for 3 to 6 years and my 70-200mm L II 9 years! I just sold that lens for 1000. I sold the mark IVs for 1600 and 1800 with a grip. I didn’t get the R5 because I’ve taken a good hit to my business this year. Instead I bought a used R for 1350 and a used RP for 750. Getting ROI on gear is just one part of being a successful freelance photographer. So the price of this lens is perfect for me but if I shot a ton with the 85 I would by Canons 1.2 in a heartbeat. So I agree with what you’ve stated except for the game over.

    What a cracking new lens! Samyang has certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons with this beauty, what surprised me is how crisper the images are compared to your loyal and trusted Tamron 85mm of which was sharper then the EF85mm 1.4L that you compared it to, such is technology and how it moves forward. Photographers have never had it so good with lens and camera choices these days!

    I ended up buying one of these two weeks ago to pair with my RP and the R5 I plan to buy early next year. I am in love with the way it renders. Such a massive step forward in image quality from my EF 85mm f/1.8, and I’m nailing focus much more consistently than I was with the copy of that lens that I owned before buying the Samyang. Very pleased.

    The 85mm f1.2L mark 2 rf can be had in good condition used under a grand and works perfectly with rf to rf adaptor and weighs less than the new 85mm f1.2L rf......as the older canon rf 85mm is now much closer in price to the Rokinon do you the if price between the old ef 85mm+rf adapter could be had for same cost as the rokinon....which way would you go?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a tough call. The older Canon isn’t sharper and will have slower autofocus, but it is a beloved lens above all because of its rendering. It also sounds like a pretty strong value that you can resale down the road without taking any hit. I really like the rokinon, though, and it focuses great and produces beautiful images.

    Thanks for another great review. Would love if you started sharing the raw files of the pictures you take in these reviews if It’s not too much of a hassle. The reason is so we can get a better Idea of the image quality. Every lens has its own character, for instance, subject separation, itˋs subjective to everyone but that’s why I’d like to have have the raw files to decide. Most portrait lenses have subject separation but some are better than others, but people don’t really go into that detail when reviewing, and subject separation is such a key ingredient to a beautiful image. I think that when you’re talking about the bokeh, that’s when you should include subject separation. Just saying it has a nice bokeh and showing round or oval balls in the background doesn’t really say much in my opinion, it’s hard to tell, because almost every lens’ bokeh looks pretty much the same, with subject separation it’s where it stands out.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI ‘They’? Interesting. Before I updated the firmware of the Samyang ánd the R6 (1.8.2 -> 1.8.4) it did function with some F00 errors, I could sometimes solve that F00-problem by removing the battery. Afterwards the camera gave F00 permanent. But I was not happy with the colour handling anyway. So it was no big deal to send it back. Somewhere I also had the feeling that it was specifically because of this Samyang lens.
      Afterwards I had the pleasure of trying the Canon RF 85mm f1.2L (DS and non-DS). I had to send them back because of the dust in the lens and the DS for stopping light.. But in retrospect I regret not keeping the DS, it was second hand only €1900 at MPB!

    After watching your review on Tamron 45mm and I just bought it last night, and Im looking for 85mm lens, recently. I cant decide between Tamron 85mm or Samyang 85mm, Im looking for good rendering which is not "flat" like what the sigma 85mm has. Which one to choose?
    Thanks Dustin for your dedication on making videos, it is really helpful 🙏

      Which one? If you are referring to the ART (the big one), the Sigma is very slightly sharper at certain points in the frame, but is huge...and I like the bokeh better from this lens.

    This Samyang is certainly a nice addition to the RF variety of glass and for sure much better (and delivers more beautiful rendering) than Sigma Art's very "flat" and boring character.
    One thing that you didn't mention is the obvious difference in the levels of micro-contrast between these 3 lenses. This is exactly why you have to pay $2000 more (well, plus the added bonus that the BR glass in the Canon helps render truly gorgeous skin tones) - the Canon's RF85 is just exploding in micro-contrast, which results in much richer tonal gradations and thus - much more sense for depth and "life-like" looking images. This has nothing to do with resolution (sharpness) and overall global lens contrast. To me - the micro-contrast is the most luxurious thing in a lens. This is what makes the images looking so natural that it seems the lens was somehow "invisible" and completely transparent, like there was no lens. You can see in your video when comparing the notes how richer is the image from the Canon and how weak (flat) it is from the Tamron. The Samyang holds up pretty well though. Shooting the Canon's RF85 since the day 1 following its release, I can say it is right there up to the Leica level.
    However, the Samyang has a very pleasing character, a bit vintage and for sure its warmer notes of rendition are very eye pleasing too. It is a fantastic lens for its price, weight and size, as well as the results it delivers. Well done Dustin and Samyang :)
    Keep up the good work.

      There's no question that the RF85L is a special lens, but unfortunately it's price is out of range of many photographers. The Samyang will be a nice option for those with a lower budget.

      13 elements on Canon's vs 11 elements on the samyang. The amount of glass effects micro contrast, as well as it's quality no doubt, but still, i would'nt say there will be much of a difference in that regard if any.

    I know you're not into Nikon, which is a shame on Nikon's part that they don't recognize your in-depth analytical approach in your reviews and send you stuff; but I sure hope Samyang makes its way to the Z mount. I'm still using a Samyang 135mm f/2 F-mount adapted to the Z system via an adapter, which is great optically but manual AF which isn't great on paid shoots. Hopefully, Samyang gets on board Z-mount and hopefully, you'll start reviewing Z-mount.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm, I do hope that Samyang starts developing on Z mount soon, though that probably won't push me onto Nikon. I am currently reviewing three brands in both APS-C and full frame, or APS-C and medium format, and frankly I don't have enough time to add more.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI I can understand that. There’s only so much a man can do and you’re doing a lot and to a very high standard. At least I’m happy that most 3rd party lenses end up sharing multiple platforms so what you gather in terms of characteristics and performance will roughly be similar when and if it comes out for another brand. Sigma comes to mind with their art series. They’re basically the same lenses but with a different flange.
