After watching season 5, you'll understand the real point of the zoo.
The amethysts, jasper, and rose are all quartz’s, I’m pretty sure it’s the color that differentiates the specific names for example all Amethysts are some shade of purple
To elaborate, quartz Gems are all military class. Like Holly Blue Agate.
On top of that, there tend to be many sub-types of agates, jaspers, and amethysts. e.g. Zebra Jasper, Biggs Jasper, Ocean Jasper, Blue Lace Agate, Lace Amethyst
Not only the colors, but the gem shape and cut
That’s also why all the gems produced on Earth were Quartz; it is the most abundant mineral found in the planet.
No! We've seen purple and pink jaspers, the difference is what they can do! Jaspers are usually way skinnier, carnelians are shorter, and roses are caretakers! Amethyst are the average soilder quartz!
Also they didn't question pearls outfit and really object to her not acting correctly because as Peridot stated back in season 2, her outfit and form was "fancy", so they probably just see that she's a "newer and better model" and ignore it.
Also adding that since pearls are seen as “custom made property” the way they look doesn’t really matter to homeworld gems because for all they know that’s how there owner wants them to look
I was always more confused about why nobody reacts to Ruby and Sapphire not exactly wearing Homeworld uniforms. Like, there's no diamond insignia to signify which diamond they serve. Ruby is dressed so differently from a normal Ruby, with the headband and lack of diamond sigil. A sapphire can probably get away with it but it still looks suspicious to me.

1:50 Jasper IS a gem. Roses, Amethysts and Jaspers are all Quartz soldiers. They all essentially look the same but with different color. Amethyst and the Jasper we know stand out because our Amethyst came out late and our Jasper is basically peak Jasper, her cut was perfect.
Also, of course it all feels weird, it's a human ZOO.
To clear your confusion:
In real life, gemstones like Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Jasper, Carnelian, Agate, etc are from the same gem family: Quartz
In the show, all quartzes variations share basically the same rol (warriors/guards) and body type (when not defective)
While i love your theory about rose taking pink diamond’s sword. Back in the episode where we met bismuth (the weapon-smith), she stated how she made the sword for rose and therefore it couldn’t have been pink’s

Yup. Humans were there repopulating for like 5,000 years. 😳 This is all they know, which is crazy. They listened to the voice because they never had a reason to question it until Greg and Steven showed up.
I'm sure it is called a zoo cause people are in captivity even if they don't know it. I think gindergarden means a place to start making gems vs how Earth's definition is the place kids go to to start learning. If I get into the lore of things, I feel like the zoo and kindergarden were gem words that Earth started using as their own words. I hope that makes sense to everyone.

Finally! Someone mentions it! "Wouldn't they normally be sleeping right now?" That's the part that always confuses me! The voice tells them it's time to sleep, then 2 minutes later they're all awake and being told to do something else.
I wish we would get like a separate series of the crystal gems before they became rebels, before meeting Rose and actually obeyed the Diamonds.

What we thought when we saw the zoo episode? It raised some question and some of the details "contributed" to some theories fans already had. It is a weird episode and that's why people were just making jokes abt it.

I remember when this aired there was a huge debate over the content, since human zoo's were once a real thing (and fairly recent in history too), so a lot of individuals felt the content to be insensitive to those affected by it. The general consensus was similar to your own reaction - a lot of people were weirded out by it and the human breeding programme

The diamonds zoo was supposed to save the humans from the cluster so, none gets hurt.
To understand the zoo think of it as we humans are the animals and the gems as zookeepers. the humans are taken care of and put on display for others gems. pink diamond collected humans (for reason later to be revealed) the humans in the zoo are on a set schedule and the lil voice is supposed to represent instinct and/or god telling them what to do based on pink diamonds observation of human life

Roses sword has an extremely obvious rose and thorn pattern on the hilt. Bismuth also clearly stated that she made the sword.
I think the human zoo is just like a real zoo, except with thousands of years of improvement. Animal zoos have been improving throughout the years with an emphasis on trying to make the enclosures as close to their natural habitats as possible with all their needs being met, so it makes sense that an advanced species like the gems would make so a thorough zoo for humans.
I love your theorizing! Your theories may not all be right, but you are thinking the right way! And yes, the writers really are as clever as you want them to be. It's one of the things that make this show so satisfying to rewatch.
i think the humans in the zoo are actual ancient humans being preserved young by gem technology
If they were the original humans then they wouldn’t need the choosening because there would be no need for a breeding program but since there IS a breeding program chances are probably that after a few generations the gems started getting involved and playing match maker to make sure it stayed a healthy population

There's a zoo bc Blue wanted to save some humans before earth got destroyed as a way to carry on Pink's legacy.
The humans are being told what to do because that's just how Homeworld works. You don't have choices you just do whatever your leader tells you do (the voice in that case). And they need to be married in order to continue repopulating I'm assuming. Maybe dead humans go in the disposable human shoot and the younger just stay in the zoo until the next marriage.
Also last note, I feel like there's some type of brain washing with the voice in that zoo episode. Greg has only been there for a little and he's already used to the sleep schedule and has gotten along with everyone.
The Steven universe fandom was all about theory when it was airing so it's nice you get to do them too also because people don't spoil it for you ☺️
Sapphire and ruby are scared of blue diamond. At least sapphire is. That’s why Garnet wasn’t able to go with Steven. They fused in front of blue and wanted ruby to be shattered. That’s why ruby is upset and hates blue diamond. Garnet knew if she went with Steven that blue diamond would recognise her from before

In real life, legitimate zoos are obligated to treat animals well. So putting humans in a zoo feels wrong to us because of the connotation of the word, but we put animals in zoos so Gems are just like us in that way if they see us as lower life forms. On top of that, endangered animals are sometimes saved from extinction because of zoos.

So, yeah. The song tells you couple of the Gems' purposes. Agates terrify (they keep other Gems in line like a drill sergent) & Lapis terraforms (uses water to shape the land for the use of the Gempire).

If you think about it, it's not much different than an Earth zoo, except that it's bigger and has captives that are more intelligent (though these humans have arguably lost some intelligence after thousands of years in captivity). Zoos also try to control when the animals eat and sleep, and which individuals breed with each other. And the best zoos try to keep the animals as happy and comfortable as possible.

Gem society is made up of many, many species, with the Diamonds of course at the top. Some Gems like Jasper share a generic name with an entire class of Gem species. (Garnet too, and Fusions give themselves names even if that name is already used.)
Next is commander level: apparently Beryl-types like Emeralds, Hessonites, Morganites etc., as well as certain aristocratic Gems closely associated with the Diamonds like Sapphires.
Then the Quartz warrior-caste, which itself seems to be divided between Agates (the mid-level management, or O-4 through 6 in the military) and Quartzes like Amethysts and Rose Quartzes. Jasper technically should be in the Agate class, and has the nasty temperament of one, but was specially created as the ultimate Quartz warrior. Maybe that's why she's stronger downstairs than upstairs.
Then specialist technical Gems like Peridots, Nephrites, Lapis Lazulis, and Desert Glass. Bismuth is possibly of this class as well.
Then common laborer Gems like Rubies.
Finally, Pearls--although like any "pet" they can have an assumed status thanks to the indulgence of a high-ranking owner.
The Betas at the Zoo station were created at Earth's Beta Kindergarten in haste during the rebellion, so they are flawed in many ways. Holly Blue Agate uses the term "Off-Colors" to describe those like Skinny Jasper, and this is this actually the derogative used on Homeworld for Gems who "came out wrong" like our Amethyst. At this time, I was wondering whether our Pearl was something of an Off-Color was well.
According to Rebecca Sugar, Jasper was the sole Beta Gem to be taken into Homeworld service after the rebellion (as part of Yellow Diamond's legion). The other Betas are deemed nearly worthless, and thus are exiled to obscure corners of the Gem Empire like the Zoo station. To be fair, the Beta Quartzes act more like our Amethyst than fierce no-nonsense warriors.
How did Pearl feel about it? As far as Rose Quartz was concerned, from Rose's Scabbard and We Need To Talk Pearl was completely devoted to and actually jealously obsessed with the one we assume was her mistress. In any superior/subordinate situation, if your boss is a jerk and incapable you probably won't have any respect for him or her; if your boss is competent and treats subordinates civilly you will probably respect and admire him/her. Rose Quartz seems to be about the sole Gem who didn't care about the Gem class structure and treated all Gems equally according to their character. As I posted before, a Gem's SOP seems to denigrate any lower-ranking Gem while being expected to be over-the-top servile to your superiors. Unpleasant all around.
Keep in mind what Bismuth said about the sword she created. Yes, Rose's sword has a rose motif on the guard and pommel, Pearl herself described it back in Rose's Scabbard.
There were a surprising number of fans who shipped Andy and Holly Blue Agate. Similar personalities and outrageous comments towards others, I suppose.
I was thinking that the Zoo must have been a death camp for its first inmates, if Gems knew nothing about human needs, nutrition, psychology or genetics.
The zoo’s structure and Rose’s sword do not correlate at all. They have no connection, that’s just the look. Also(THIS ISNT SPOILERS)the zoo belonged to Pink Diamond because she liked humans so much, so it was made specifically for her to preserve them and keep them in a zoo like trophies. When she was shattered, Blue Diamond kept over the zoo as it held sentimental value of Pink. This was stated twice or three times I believe in this episode and the past one
Could you compile a list of like your top 5 (maybe 10 if there's alot) episodes, your top 3 to 5 songs (now that you have the context) and like a list of your top 10 theories then react to them after you finish everything (as far as you were planning to go). It would be nice to see you first see how it unfolds then see how close or how far off you were. Man if you were in my friend group, it would have been lit to theorize about SU together. Theorizing is how we survived SU hiatuses when Cartoon Network was messing around with airing the show.

Here’s something that can help. Every gem in the show, there are multiple of that kind. They’re not unique or their own person. There are thousands of each kind all made for a specific purpose to operate as a society. Thousands of Pearls, thousands of Rose Quartzes, and thousands of Agates.
Amythest, Jasper, and rose quartz all fallen into the quartz classes.
With the zoo being so safe and stuff I wouldn't be suprised if that one hurt person was just giving birth or something

Jaspers and amethysts are both quartz, they are just different colored. Just like Rose quartz.
All amethysts are some shade of purple, while jaspers vary from yellow to orange and red. Rose quartzes are pink etc.

YES! I completely hate ALL forms of ranks and hierarchies. I can't stand ANY system that places any person/group above another. So if there's a manager, a boss, a captain, a king, a president, a chief, a supervisor, a commander, or ANYTHING of the sort, I disagree with it and will have no part in it. Nobody is above me or better than me and nobody can tell me what to do. It works both ways of course, I don't see myself above anyone else, nor do I want to have power or control over others. I don't let people boss me around, and I don't boss them around either. That goes for parents, teachers, police, or anyone too, titles mean nothing to me xD Everybody matters and everybody counts. I would never value one life above another.

Ruby works as a guard and worked for Sapphire as works for other gems but I don’t know if shes in Blue Diamond’s court because Yellow diamond has yellow gems and Blue diamond has Blue gems and Steven is Pink Jasper is mostly orange and Ruby is Red and it could be that Rubies are apart of Pink Diamonds court

Bro when you finish SU i recommend u watch regular show, is a very funny show and it has a crazy character development through the seasons.
In the real world, Amethyst is a type of quartz, so is rose quartz. In-universe, quartzs were made on Earth, and seem to have been made with a larger percentage of Pink Diamond's power, kinda like how blue gems are made of more of Blue Diamond's power on likely one of her colonies
