Remember, as far as Blue Diamond is concerned, the Cluster is going to emerge and destroy the Earth any day now. She sincerely thought she was being kind to Greg by saving him from certain doom.
Greg’s song in this episode was written by Rebecca Sugar when she learned Steven Universe had been cancelled (later uncancelled in the messiest possible way, we’ll discuss that later), and was worked into the episode they happened to be working on at the time.
It’s a good reference point for where the show’s pace starts to ramp up.

4:42 It makes sense that "Three Gems and a Baby" was aired around the holidays/Christmastime, because Greg w/ the blue blanket around him holding baby Steven, with Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl around them HEAVILY resembles the Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus and the 3 Wise Men.
Yes, I love this - it's a bold choice! 😀 it also arguably foreshadows Blue Diamond.

Until I watched this episode, I had not idea I had been pronouncing palanquin wrong my entire life.
From the VERY FIRST TIME watching "Three Gems and a Baby," I can't NOT cry hearing Greg's thoughts in the song "I Could Never Be Ready (For This)," He's basically a newly, and I mean VERY NEWLY widowed man caring for the baby his wife HAD to die to bring him into the world. Greg loved Rose very much, and he loves Steven that much too, but everyone is constantly dealing with the fact that she's gone and Steven will one day have to take her place (in more ways than one, but I won't say bc spoilers.)
This also brings up the very sad concept of Steven's mortality. Gems are basically immortal as long as their gemstones remain unharmed. They don't need to eat, sleep, breathe, or anything else humans need to do.
However, Steven is half human. He doesn't age like a normal human and he has superhuman powers. But he still needs to eat, sleep, breathe (albeit less than a normal one and he has more endurance/stamina than a normal human.) Because he's organic, one day in the future, he WILL die. Steven can't live forever, just an extended period of time compared to a human's lifespan.
The sad thing for the Crystal Gems is that when that day comes, Rose will likely come back bc her gemstone will survive Steven's organic half, so she'll be all that's left of him. The Gems lived alongside her, watched her fall in love, then give up her life for Steven; They raised Steven, watched him grow up and ... do what the series shows him doing, and then inevitably when he dies, they will finally have Rose back and she'll remember everything from when she was alive and maybe also Steven's life... only for the Gems to be missing Steven, who can never come back or be replicated. That's it, he'll be gone forever, as is the finite nature of the human life. "You're going to be something incredible. You're going to be a human being."- Rose, "Lion: Straight to Video."
That's an interesting way to look at it. If Rose returns when Steven dies, she will have to deal with the consequences of her actions (even if some of them were justified). Pearl will distance herself from her to try and not fall back to her previous clingy/obsessed personality, the Diamonds are going to scold her, and Bismuth will feel conflicted about hating/liking her. The only person that would understand her would be Greg (and he would be dead since Steven will outlive him)
