So part of the reason some of us hate Rocknaldo so much is because when it originally aired, cartoon network hyped it up saying "Come meet the newest Crystal Gem!" and had a drawing of a green gemstone with red flecks. All kinds of theories were made about who it could be and lots of people thought it was a fusion of Peridot and either Steven or Garnet. When the episode dropped we felt like we were being trolled.
He's also incredibly obnoxious and hard to deal with.

Dude I remember all the theories on TH-cam. I remember some people say it was a fanmade leak or something. But yeah they fandom back then was VERY pissed, mainly at the shows staff but I think it's the people who advertised this.
Steven’s version of rose was a mixture of what he was told about her and how he thinks a parent should act, which is basically just Greg. He basically wanted her to be like his dad.

There's a theory that it was actually Rose communicating to Steven through the room, and I like to think it's true
Despite what others say Rose didn’t mean any harm to Steven. Before Steven was born it was already thousands of years after the gem war. The genuineness of rose giving up her life just so Steven could live is undeniable. She didn’t mean the mess that came out of the war, the war was mess enough. And without her starting a revolution, there would be no earth and no place where gems can be free to be who they want to be.

So it’s still Rose’s fault they all had to fight and die. She didn’t do the right things, she just stopped doing the wrong thing.
@@artistaroundtheblock2047 Yeah, she wanted a colony because she was the gem equivalent of an early teenage bratz, and her "parents" have all the cool adult stuff that kids think they also wanted. And then she grew up. Not all at once, mind you, but she did grew up. She started to make the right choices (I will not budge on this) and actually moved towards the person people idealized her to be, even if not completely. The most important part of her development was that she saw the error in her ways, and she didn't even need Steven for that, which is surprisingly a really high bar.

That’s is all true and Rose is pretty ok but I will never congratulate or feel great for essentially a thief returning what they stole.
It just feels scummy to me. Imagine someone stole something from for 6 months and then they return it and people say ,” You did the right thing.”
No, they didn’t; they just stopped doing the wrong thing. Those two are very different to me, I’m not sure about you.
@@artistaroundtheblock2047 As far as gem morality (this is the standard I will hold her to because this is the standard she was brought up in) is concerned, she didn't steal anything. It was technically her birthright. And even if you ignored that, she didn't even steal Earth as much as it was given to her by those who stole it. If you give a ten year old kid a toy that you stole, does that mean that kid also stole that toy? If she returned something she realized was stolen, because as far as she's concerned she didn't steal anything, how is that not a right thing? She even fought those "thieves" so that she could return it! That's a right thing in my book, and I have no qualms in feeling great that she did.
Rocknaldo is the classic example of a toxic ally. It's also the first ep where it seems Ronaldo might actually learn something

Tbh, Ronaldo has been my least favorite character, even before Rocknaldo. He has a way of thinking and acting that is just unbearable for me
Storm in the Room shows how Steven's feelings towards his mother are radically changing.
The less said about Rocknaldo, the better.

I LOVE Storm in the Room, it's one of my favorites of the entire season. It's just such a shame Rocknaldo follows it - which, while I agree it's not as bad as people say, it's definitely one of the show's weaker episodes. I find it's more bearable if you don't watch it right after Storm in the Room LOL
it's not just that people think it's bad- it's also in part that it was advertised to have a new crystal gem, and said gem (bloodstone) was a very popular candidate for gemsonas in the fandom so we were very excited to see what they'd come up with.
This episode was so sad. Steven's been through so much. 🥺
I love how the room knows Rose so much better than anyone else. Which makes sense, since it's, you know, Rose's room.
To be fair, Connie isn’t a gem but she still holds her own in combat thanks to Pearl, I’m suprised no one thinks at first that Ronaldo has a chance of helping.

Part of the reason that episode is so hated is because right before it aired, cartoon network advertised it as if we were gonna be introduced to a new gem called Bloodstone( which is an actual gem btw) but it turned out to just be Ronaldo's gemsona.

The Bloodstone episode was a reference to the growing gatekeeping that was present in fandom and also the gemsona trend, so they made it to address a lot of stuff people were expressing back then, honestly Ronaldo was made as a reference to any member of a fandom obssesed over it and making their whole personality about it.
Honestly I don't hate, especially since I used to be a Ronaldo lmao, so I guess ppl who hate the episode either met someone like him or had the call coming from inside the house LMAO

@@thebigmystery7841 not quite, he is not evil perse, he is just immature, he is not that far gone since he got a loving GF but he spends too much time on the internet and getting his opinions from there instead of interacting with others, he gets super passionate about things he likes but lacks respect of boundaries, he's been bullied during his life so he tries to make himself special with whatever he got around.
You're not supposed to hate him, but see him as flawed, but capable of redemption, sadly we don't get to see that (since the show got cut short thanks to CN).
Actually apparently people are mostly upset with that ep because people were expecting a new gem and even theorising for I don't know how long since I just learned this from a comment on this video. Maybe you can find it.

So while I don't hate this episode they definitely didn't do fryrock much good.
In hindsight I guess he did get worse as the episode got on probably because of his lack of sleep. with a dash of not liking that he was being left behind while the others went to do things sprinkled on top.
Some good rest helped clear things but a simple "I was a jerk" doesn't go far to erase the actual jerky behaviour.😅
My thought was that the room has a memory of its own; it's able to create such a detailed Rose because it remembers her on its own. Same with Greg in the Rose's Room episode-- it probably had "met" Greg before and had him memorized, with Steven giving it updated information. That's why this version of Rose, though basic, still was able to say that it loved him, and mean it, despite him having never met Rose. Plus, when Connie eventually is introduced to the room, it recreates her very faithfully, with a focus on what he wants to do, which solidifies this theory even further to me.
9:22 the generational trauma hits hard with that line
Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is yet another variety of quartz, specifically green jasper or chalcedony with bits of hematite mixed in. So silicon dioxide with inclusions of chlorite and flecks of iron oxide. The bits of hematite, being red, make it look like blood being spattered on the stone, hence the name bloodstone. While we're at it, that's also how hematite got its name, from the Greek haima (blood). Heliotrope comes from the Greek Helios (sun) and trépein (to turn), because of ancient ideas of how it reflected light. About a 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, birthstone for March. As you can probably guess from the name, it's associated with warriors, and historically there were a whole bunch of peoples who would wear bloodstone jewelry in battle because of properties it held.

‘Rocknaldo’ is really just more of Ronaldo somehow being less likeable than the diamonds.
I'm only realizing right now that Ronaldo used the Zuko (ATLA) line "That's rough buddy" to try and console Steven there at the end
I hated all sports as a kid. I dropped every ball. I tripped while running. Imagine the most uncoordinated person you can think of. (Bella Swan pre vampire) However, Choir was my after school life for 8 years. I love singing. When my voice was daily trained I could sing Soprano 1. I can't hit those notes now, though.

Rocknaldo isn't an entertaining episode, but it's an important one. People don't like him, but his personality type is REALLY common in real life. It's good to show an example of a person like that and how to deal with them.
The problem, as least as I saw it, was that Steven really didn't know how to handle Ronaldo, which he could have since Ronaldo thinks that Steven is a kindred spirit oppressed by normies.

@@baraxor Yeah. Steven only knows how to be kind. He's had experience dealing with people who respond well to kindness and with people who don't understand kindness and view it as some kind of trick. But he's never dealt with someone like Ronaldo who recognizes kindness but sees it as something to take advantage of.
Imma be honest scoot. People tell me the same thing about which season is good or bad. I just roll with it. But honestly "Storm in the Room" is a great episode. However "Rocknaldo" is a bad episode, then again I don't like Ronaldo alot, but thats just me.

Steven learned what everyone learns at some point (hopefully) - your parents are just people, no matter how strong or important you or others make them out to be. They're not always right, their decisions aren't always well thought-out & they don't always have the best intentions behind everything they do. But, if you're lucky, you can work with them to understand that their heart was in the right place even if some of their mistakes had a big impact on your development. Not in all cases of course, some parents are just trash, but it's a relief when they aren't.
As far as Rocknaldo, it's everyone's least favorite episode because Ronaldo's everyone's least favorite character. What a lot of people don't get is, he is that way because his character is a pure foil - every time he is featured in an episode, it's only so that other characters' actions & traits can be highlighted (usually Steven's). In Rocknaldo, we start to see Steven maturing & how the Crystal Gems' view of him is changing. They barely batted an eye when he made the objectively poor decision to let Ronaldo join, because they trusted that he would take responsibility & see it through which he did. We also see him starting to realize when he's being taken advantage of on his own, rather than someone else telling him that it's happening. The episode is about growth & maturity, we see Ronaldo rejecting both while Steven is embracing both & it's a huge step in his character arc.
The rocknaldo episode I feel was a commentary on the fandom as a whole at the time
"She doesn't even live here!" Was quickly followed by the video freezing and the computer rebooting itself after a handful of awkward unmoving silent seconds. Certainly an unexpected moment before getting ready to head to bed for the night. lol
But, yeah, as others have explained about the situation of the time of that episode... It was, at least for me, quite the mild disappointment that all that build up for a 'new gem' was just Ronaldo being an annoying butt.

It’s because wean the show was airing . They hyped the episode up. They said some stuff like. Meet the new crystal gem. And had a green outline with red highlights. So for a while a lot of us fans where really excited to watch it cus we thought it was gonna be cool then we got a episode about ranaldo gaslighting Steven the whole episode witch was just not good or what the hype was for.
the people who hate this episode are the ones still mad because it reminds them of themselves.

I don't hate Ronaldo quite as much as most seem to, but I totally get it. Being in tech I've worked with Ronaldos throughout my adulthood. To me he's a pretty funny and accurate parody of a particular type of nerd dude. Totally understandable when people find him insufferable. Those guys are often insufferable.

And maybe it's a stretch, but I think it's about people who don't put in any work, but think they can jump in and take over activist work from people who have been already doing it for years and years. And kinda about appropriation too a bit I think. Ronaldo like the aesthetics but doesn't listen to the people actually from the culture. He probably could help if he didn't make it all about himself.

I've always thought that the Rose in Rose's room that episode IS actually pretty accurate to the real Rose. That speech she made about sports sounds very much like some of the thing's she said in earlier episodes, so it seems real. I think part of it was what Steven wanted, but I also think the room "remembered" her, so was able to show a more complete/accurate version than all the freaky "sort-of-people" the room created in that earlier episode. Also, in that episode, Greg seems real for a moment before we realize Steven is still in the room. I think that's because Greg has been in the room before (but not as much as Rose) so it's able to make a more complete version of him.
Come on. I don't like Ronaldo either but S4Ep17's not THAT bad. XD

Damn I remember how bad the teasing was coming up to that episode. I remember how invested and interested people got in this mysterious "Bloodstone" character, only for it to turn out to be... Ronaldo being a massive annoyance. People that saw that episode when it aired frankly have every right to hate it because of how Cartoon Network hyped it up. It was a massive disappointment.
i fully understand why people would want you to skip episode 17 but i think its still a really funny episode. plus its a tiny bit of character development, you get to see that even steven cant put up with ronaldos shit forever lmao

Onion Gang and Rocknaldo are the two worst episodes of the series, and luckily they are among the few episodes that are completely inconsequential in the grand scheme of the show, but neither are bad episodes. Other shows that get much more praise have far worse episodes
I want to FIGHT those people who said to skip an episode. Not only does EVERY episode have something that ties back to the lore and progression of story (even if you dont know now, stuff will be noticeable on a second watch), but this one in particular literally deals with steven and his character develpment. He went from idolizing his mom in possibly an unhealthy manner for him and is now realizing that he cant keep doing that. He has to acknowledge that his mom isnt perfect. She made mistakes. She helped a lot of people but she herself is not perfect. And he has to realize that you can fix everything perfectly. You cant even live life perfectly. And now he has to deal with these problems and hes jot sure what to do...because even his mom couldnt fix them.
Its a very VERY important episode and I am FURIOUS anyone would think its bad or even to skip it. Youd lose the transition of steven being this starry eyed child who saw only glitter and gold and now is a boy who has to pick up the pieces and reality is hitting him harder than ever.
I had a roomate who refused to watch the show because he thought steven was too immature about everything. I was mad because...of course. Hes a kid. But this episode show that he HAS grown and is becoming his own person...not just his moms shadow.
And actually I say this about Rocknaldo too. Hate Ronaldo all you want. But Ive know people like him my WHOLE LIFE. and having something point out this toxic behavior is a win to me. Not sorry.

That’s not the episode there talking about. The stevens mom episode is really good. The one we told him not to watch was the Ronaldo. Wean the show was coming out on tv. They hyped the episode with stuff like “meet the new crystal gem” and then we got a toxic episode about ronaldo gaslighting Steven. Witch was lowky kinda racist of him to do. (Hints why at the beginning of the episode Steven says it makes him uncomfortable) the whole episode is just toxic traits being thrown at Steven. Witch is even more bad mostly coming from the episode right before it. Steven just went through so much pain to learn about his mom and making him decide what he wants to believe. Then we go to a episode that has a random person be rude to Steven and then gaslight him. That episode had no message or meaning. The only thing I learned was that never look at promotion for new episodes for shows now cus I might just be lied to.
@@itsuno3695 well I didnt watch the show as episodes came out. I didnt go through being punked by the Bloodstone stuff. So I can only look at the episode from a purely critical standpoint and dont have my emotions basing the quality of the episode over that.
Ive already said Ive known too many 'Ronaldos' in my life. People who use their interests as a way to gatekeep and put people down to feel better about themselves. You ARE supposed to hate him. Because hes literally the caricature of those kinds of people. The episode ITSELF is not toxic and is VERY important to KIDS. Teaching KIDS to be Steven. To stand up for yourself and voice that the behavior that Ronaldo shows is not healthy and that you have the power to not let people like Ronaldo walk all over you.
A lot of people forget that this is a kids show. And Rebbecca Sugar whole heartedly puts lessons in that are not only digestable for kids and adults but also can teach both on how to approach topics that arent usually presented in other kids media. Love, family trauma, respecting boundaries...its all been there the whole time.
I feel like a lot of people who put this episode down...just either havent had enough Ronaldos in their life to realize thats the point, and are a bit butt hurt that they didnt get the lore they kind of toxically demand of the show runners. I think its funny. I didnt take it to heart. Because I know what the episode was trying to convey. Getting pissy because they didnt do what you expected or wanted is not the right way to criticize a show. And Ill even say there are things about steven universe could be better about.
But no one can change my mind that Ronaldo is a purposeful character made with the PURPOSE of being uncomfortable. Because you have to be in steven shoes to understand the message.
Also should mention that the whole bait and switch was done BECAUSE of how toxic and gate keepey the fandom had become at that point. About Oc's, about lore. Theres was literally an artist that commited suicide because they were bullied so bad. All because they didnt make Rose 'fat' enough. Its gross and I applaud them for calling that out. Because again...its a frickin kids show.
