Garnet is a fusion made of love. She loves herself so much and so deeply it's literally who she is. Fusing with that has got to feel amazing, it could make you feel so complete and perfect and better than you've ever felt alone. No wonder they love fusing with Garnet so much, and no wonder Garnet loves being herself. Look at how much Sugilite and Sardonyx love being themselves too, it's all held together by how much love Garnet has for herself.
I want to add in that they probably like feeling strong as well. Garnet is like the leader and the strongest of the team; Sugilite has mostly Amethyst's in her mindset, and Sardonyx has Pearl's mindset. Pearl and Amethyst make it clear that they don't like to feel weak and or hopeless.
It's like Garnet gives them her strength but then, obviously they get carried away :(

Dancing is what syncs the fusion partners, I'm pretty sure. It's about harmony for the most part.
I always interpreted the dancing as training wheels in a way. If the components of the fusion have a strong relationship, they don't need to dance cuz they're already on the same wavelength
I agree with you, I think it's a pretty good way to have the fusion partners begin to move together, and therefore sync. Some fusions don't need to do any dancing at all (Ruby and Sapphire for example)
Yeah people need to be in sync and yeah dancing is the device to do it (i like the training wheels analogy lol) ya dont need it but it helps

Malachite is actually a toxic gem when it comes to gemology, so this reflects on their toxic relationship/fusion a whole lot. Not to mention the color scheme and stripe placement to mimic the actual gem 💚

I'm glad you noticed that Steven felt ome type of way when Greg was talking to Connie. The way Steven grabbed his gem, which he thinks is his mom, is kinda heartbreaking.
See I didn’t even think of it that way. I guess then gem is kinda of his mom….. that’s really sad 😢
Since Garnets fusion is two gems in love, it’s a very delicate relationship. Especially since allowing some else to fuse, is allowing them into that space (regardless of if it’s platonic love or romantic love).
Pearl tricking Garnet into fusion was a breach of Ruby and Sapphires boundaries, and some people (although I wouldn’t equate it to this) have referred to this scene as r**e. But I personally think it’s an exploration of what it’s like to use someone else’s love for yourself.
Yeah the rape thing is pretty dumb because fusion =/= sex but there IS a lack of informed consent in their fusion.
Yeah that thing is pretty dumb but it is messed up cause ruby and Sapphire are truly express their love for each other and are even closer when fuse and become Garnet and pearl I understand why she loved being sardonyx and me personally I thinking it's also becaused she misses doing that with rose so you can't hate garnet for being upset cause that's their special way of truly being together

@@karolmonarrez5836 yeah idk why I interpreted as pearl wanted to fuse for so long since rose well made Steven and she hasn't done that since then and me personally she acted as a very greedy and uncaring of garnets feeling's knowing what fuseing meant to them as ruby and Sapphire
That breaks my heart when Rose seems so confused about "how it works". I think she was played with in the past, so she thought it was all a game, then seeing him crying and being "tortured" completely broke her misconceptions.
I think Greg really taught her about real love and humanity.
Amethyst also felt guilty for the Communication hub being still active

Because of her temperament Sugilite went berserk and the work wasn't done correctly allowing Peridot to send a rescue message
So seeing Garnet put Sugilite aside because of what happened made her feel ashamed in some sort
So she wanted to show she can still be useful
Then there's also the situation about fusing with garnet
Pearl in her jealousy ironically made the Greg/Rose relationship possible to develop. As she admits, Rose had many human lovers over the last several thousand years, but she only regarded them as pets and playmates ("I really want to play with you"), not as equals. Greg was apparently the first human to have the courage to challenge Rose and demand that she treat him as if he was a social equal rather than a toy. If Pearl's intended put-downs hadn't inspired Greg to push things, he might have taken Rose's lyrics to heart and concluded that she really wasn't into him, and that he should move on.
Even though Steven is only around 14, I feel like mentally the gems matured a lot after Rose disappeared in a short amount of time. They had to handle Earth alone for the first time in thousand of years without her guidance

That's kinda the point isn't it? They rebelled to find their own path and life. But they never started that until home world left earth. But then rose is gone, and there's Steven.
They grew more in those 11 years between rose going and now, than they had in the rest of their lives.
Fusion is about connecting emotions. Gems can fuse as long as they have a feeling in common that they are trying to hang onto. Dancing just helps with that, but it's not required. Even Malachite, despite the internal struggle, stays together due to a shared emotion they refuse to give up on.
pearl definitely had romantic feelings for rose! she didn’t take greg seriously until the first episode in this video bc 1. she always saw her past w rose as creating this incredibly strong bond together 2. she wasn’t as mature as she is now (even though she clearly still has her issues lol) n 3. she thought greg would be like the other humans rose loved. while rose cared about humans, she loved them like how a child loves a toy or a human loves an animal. however, greg and rose dancing and having a serious conversation with each other made pearl realize that greg is different and that he might finally take away what she has w rose! personally i think it’s a rlly interesting (and SAD ◠̈) relationship dynamic! i’m glad to see ur thoughts on this / the show thru these videos :]
I never thought about it until now but it’s pretty impressive that Garnet and Jasper were pretty much even in strength during jailbreak but Jasper wasn’t a fusion

A fusion is a physical representation of a relationship: can be love, hate, commitment, or whatever is the reason you are related with someone else.
The strongest fusion is the strongest relationship.
The Owl House, Amphibia, Gravity Falls and She-Ra??? OMG YES YES YES YES. If you like Steven Universe you'll LOVE these too!
I recommend with those Infinity Train, Kipo, and Star vs the Forces of Evil too. I hope you'll get to all of those at some point, because they are all truly AMAZING shows!

The thing about fusion that a lot of people don't get is it's not sexual, but it's as intimate as that. It's just something that doesn't exist in real life. It's like a Vulcan mind meld in Star Trek. It's not a metaphor for something that exists in real life. It's a sci-fi concept that allows examining what intimacy means outside of the bounds of human sexual relationships. It's super personal. You're sharing your mind and body with someone. So, Pearl and Rose behaving like a couple and fusing isn't a sexual relationship as we would understand it, but it is a romantic relationship. And one that's been going on for thousands of years.
While fusion is a completely fictitious concept without a 1-1 real world equivalent, it is sort of a metaphor in the sense that its proven versatile as a metaphorical vehicle for the exploration of certain relevant, real-world concepts such as healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, general LGBTQ acceptance, transgender identity validity, and consent; at least as far as I can tell.
A relationship, sure, I can agree with that, but fusion isn't inheritantly romantic. For gem 'biology' and most purposes, it's for work and battle. It's a partnership, a team, a friendship or kinship, and not always but sometimes romantic.
When Amethyst says "I think this one's my favorite" about Greg it probably indicates her regard over all the other humans over the ages who've crossed paths with Rose Quartz and became her "playmates". With Pearl this hurts a lot, because this is a new thing: yes, Rose has had a lot of human friends, but none of them apparently met one-on-one emotionally on this level before Greg, and this is a double-whammy since Rose IS Pearl's Number One.
The reason Sugalite seems so unstable/dangerous is because a fusion is truly an amalgamation of the gems that make it up.
We already know Amethyst is chaos personified (I love her, she's my fave 🥰). And while we haven't seen much of Ruby and Sapphire at this point, in the Jailbreak episode we DID see how frantic and hot-headed Ruby can be compared to Sapphire's more calm nature. Ruby + Amethyst = trouble lol.
I love how you hype Garnet at every chance it's the positive energy I need in my life haha. And the dancing is mostly just used to synchronize and get on the same wavelength yknow, but as you put it "fusion masters" like Garnet, can just be so on sync they dont need something like that.
5:43 I think it's enotion based, like it depends on their emotions and dancing just helps them get into the mood.
New gems:
Rainbow quartz, also known as anandalite or iris quartz, is - you guessed it - a variation of quartz. Specifically, clear quartz crystals with internal iridescence caused by reflection and refraction. So, yeah, composition of quartz, color of pearl, good choice for a combination. 8 on the Mohs Scale. Supposed to be good for handling dysfunctional relationships, and yeah, in a way it fits, since Rainbow Quartz did get Pearl's attitude toward Greg out in the open.
Sardonyx is a variety of onyx (silicon dioxide), specifically onyx mixed with bands of carnelian (also known as sard), which gives it a reddish hue. 6.5-7 on the Mohs Scale. The name onyx comes from the Greek for "claw" or "fingernail", because the light bands kinda look like nails. I was so upset when this episode came out, because I'd been hoping we would one day see a fusion named Sardonyx, but, y'know, as a fusion between Gems named Sard and Onyx. Associated with optimism and victory, fitting for obvious reasons. A birthstone for August, which is rather humorously ironic, since the other August birthstone is... peridot.
And last but not least, this episode reveals the name of Lapis and Jasper's fusion: Malachite. A copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, only 3.5-4 on the Mohs Scale. The name is derived from the Greek malache (mallow), since its green color resembles mallow leaves. The fact that "mal" means "bad" in Latin is a fortunate coincidence, and it's the reason you never see fictional characters named Malachite who aren't villains (shoutout to any Sailor Moon fans). It's toxic when put in water, which is too perfect to have been unintended, and it symbolizes protection of children, which is kinda why Lapis formed Malachite to begin with.

If you remember from Coach Steven, Amethyst and Garnet's fusion became too unstable and had to be separated by Pearl herself, whereas Pearl and Garnet's fusion had no problems and could un-fuse themselves elegantly.
That was what her whole song was about, taking the blame for the Sugilitte incident and questioning how she could "make it up" to Garnet.
You're on the right track regarding the nature of the relationships between the Gems. Pearl does often want to be #1, or the right hand of whoever is #1. Amethyst often struggles with feelings of inadequacy. These I believe are their reasons for wanting to be Garnet's preferred fusion partner.

The reason the gems look younger is probably due to a couple things
1: Rose is around so their mental state is probably a lot more "dependent" on rose and they rely on her
2: Rose is also 8 feet tall and makes the other gems look smaller by comparison- their actual size and height haven't changed
3: amethyst was seemingly treated as "younger/inexperienced" by the other gems at this point- likely reflecting in her mental state

I'm not sure about the other series you mentioned, but I'd personally love to see gravity falls! It ties in really well with that mystery element and the viewer trying to figure things out along the way. The other series seem to be super good from what I've heard too! And I agree, fusion does seem to be addicting to some extent

I never viewed any of Garnet’s fusions as having her personality. I always saw Garnet as an amplifier for whatever Gem she was fusing with

Fusion is more about two people being in sync and there being a desire on both parts to want to fuse. Dancing basically helps keep in sync. Kind of like when musicians use a metronome to keep everyone on the same beat. A reason why Greg+Rose didn't fuse was because she didn't have that strong deep connection. Another reason why Steven and Connie were able to fuse.
No pure Gem and human can ever fuse.
Fusion is very personal to Garnet. It's her whole existence.
Sapphire and Ruby allow other gems to fuse with them if it's for a good cause. But pearl took advantage of garnet for her own personal benefit which to Garnet obviously would feel so offended and used.
The reason they look so young in the flashback is partly because the clothing style is older, but also because the gems' physical forms reflect how they see themselves at the time. Amethyst is younger/smaller because she hasn't had a lot of time to mature & find out who she is yet, etc.
Pearl's relationship with Rose is...complicated. That's as much as I can really say without spoiling anything lol
For the dancing thing, fusion is about interpersonal connection & dancing is just a good demonstration of how people can have a connection with one another without it being necessarily romantic, but dancing isn't the only way to show that connection, if that makes sense.
The Garnet thing...my theory is, when you see two people who have been in a relationship with each other for a very long time & they're still very much in love, seem like the perfect match, etc. people want to know what that feels like. So when they fuse with garnet, they get a taste of how great that relationship is and naturally want to feel like that too, but Pearl & Amethyst don't have anyone like that so Garnet is their only chance to experience it.
I know you've finished the series but I really needed this to be said- 'It worked'. Garnet has future vision- and in one of her timelines, she sees... Steven. Who is the fusion between Greg and Rose. It worked, just not in the way they expected. Gems, by themselves, can't have children. Their forms aren't organic, their forms are a hard light projected from their gems, hence why they can reform after being poofed. Greg is organic, and can't fuse with Rose- but their love took a different form in a little starry eyed child

It's not about dancing, it's about their coordination and cooperation, literal and metaphorical, and the trust being displayed. The way they present this to the viewer is through dance and music.
i dont want to spoil garnets backstory or anything but ill say that the dancing started with garnet and leave it at that. hopefully when you learn more about her backstory you'll understand lol
Fusion is about harmony. It can be emotional harmony (such as Garnet), it can be harmony of intention (like Alexandrite), or it can even be a toxic harmony (like Malachite). The more in tune with each other they are, the less effort it takes to fuse and maintain it.
All the shows you mentioned in the intro are amazing, the first three are masterpieces.
If you look at the color of Garnet's glasses when she talks, I think its color usually shows which side of her she's expressing. They are both red and blue but from time to time one takes more space.
I’m sure you have seen this in the comments multiple times already but dancing is just another way that gems sync with the other. The fusion itself is maintained depending on the type of relationship between the people involved with the fusion. It can be romantic, friendly, toxic, or purely work based the strength of the relationship determines the stability of the fusion.
Fusion is when gems are in sync phisically and emotionally and dancing is the most eficient way of fusing
Crazy how amethyst feels the same way in ep 11 as pearl did in the sugelite episode, and they both sing their depressing song too lol
My quick take on the "does fusion require dancing" thing: At least from my understanding, the main ingredients for fusion are a strong emotional connection, and physically touching (so that the fusing can actually occur)
Dancing is just an easy way to achieve both of those at once, it's getting you into the zone, so to speak
Fusion _can_ occur without a dance, we've seen this happen with ruby & sapphire at the season 1 finale, where they fused out of sheer joy of seeing eachother again while hugging (which ofc satisfies the emotion and touch requirements)
tl;dr Dancing isn't required, but it's easier with it
Steven only has the power to fuse with other humans because he's half-human, so a Gem/Human hybrid can fuse with both gems AND humans. So Greg can't fuse with a pure gem like Rose, for that exact reason.

"whyy do they dance when they fuse" Because dancing is the most simple way of synchronizing with someone. Like, try it at home, when you put music on and start dancing with someone you like, be a romantic song or just a fun energetic song, you two will start dancing in synchrony without even noticing. Thats what fusion is about, is getting so perfectly connected with someone that you became one.
Keept sycronized with the other people inthe fusion is important because without that the fusion falls apart

Ah yes Steven Universe, Leaders of the gem world. A supreme ruler, an ill-tempered military commander, a grieving mourner and a childlike princess.
Fusion is when two gems are in sync, dancing is just the easiest way for two gems to sync up. It will become easier to understand in the future
If dancing is a way to express yourself in your most transparent way, using it for fusion shows how much of a connection and relation fusion is about
The fallout of the CGs in this arc is one of the best in the series.
They dont NEED to dance to fuse, but dancing will help them syncronize and fused easier.
To answer your question why gems dance to facilitate fusion, fusion requires synchronization between two or more gems. Dancing is simply the easiest method to accomplish the bare minimum requirements to fuse. If you recall in the earlier part of season 1 when Pearl and Amethyst were struggling to fuse when Steven wanted to see a giant woman, they were both dancing with each other, but the synchronization was lacking. The dancing gets the physical part of fusion done, but to maintain a fusion, they also have to keep a singular mindset. It comes easy to Sapphire and Ruby because they understand one another better than most other gems could.
Hopefully nobody answered this yet but... the reason they dance is because fusion is when two gems synchronized through body, mind, and soul. So the best way to show that is for them to dance.

Fusion isn’t always about dancing. It’s about being on your partner’s level. It can either be emotion, purpose or necessity. The driving factor is being in sync with your fusion partner. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Fusion is synchronization of both body and mind. You don't need to dance but it makes it easier
Most fusions are voiced by singers i think, which i think is cool, but a bit dumb becasue then we get situations like the last episode where sugilite (nicki minaj) is silent because her voice is tied to someone famous.
I always really loved how this show handled fusions though. Like you said, you can see which parts of sardonyx are from pearl and garnet. An its cool how sooing how both character's positive and negative traits influence the fusion.
I'm not going to say whether there was a romantic relationship between Pearl and Rose, but I will tell you by this point the show has made it very clear how Pearl feels about her.
Pearl definitely is/was in love with Rose.
Both Amethyst and Pearl were using Garnet to fill their insecurities they feel more complete when they're with Garnet.
Their fusions are a combination of the people in it so not just random. So it combines their look and personality into one middle personality and it combines their weapons
a little fun fact about roses voice! her voice actress also voices megara in disneys hercules and played bell on broadways beauty and the beast!
The two fusing need to be in sync and dancing is a great way to have people become in sync
The owl house is an awesome show, and I would definitely recommend watching it if you can. The recent episodes have been so fire. Amphibia is also great too, and unlike the owl house (which is still airing) Amphibia has actually reached its conclusion earlier this year.

Rose is thousands of years old so I think it makes sense that she's had humans she's loved before... especially if she sees/used to see humans as something entertaining or like a novelty like Pearl said
Fun fact sardonyx is a banded variety of chalcedony (cryptocrystalline quartz), with layers alternating between sard and onyx.
So from my understanding, dancing is just a way to help both gems and/or people to connect and feel in sync. Like dancing is an intimate sort of thing that makes you feel connected to the person you're dancing with so that helps the fusion process work/click in sooner. So they often dance but it's not always needed or necessary for fusion to work
Guess the dancing is just getting them in the mood…thats why garnet said synchronize before starting the fusion with amethyst

6:00 Dancing makes them sync up. It is not necessary but it's helpful. - You gotta share a mind, right? Completely sync up. Be the relationship the two+ of you are together in a single person. So you gotta sync.
If you mesh together really well, you don't really need to dance.
Greg's confunsion it's not just about pearl getting in his head, it's about what Rose sang in that performance.
So dancing is the best way to combine you need to be in sync and dancing helps
i think fusion happens when two or more gems are in sync with each other and dancing helps them become in sync physically making fusion easier. thats just my theory though
Honestly I don't think Pearl was being a hater for the part where she called him just a "phase" I mean you hear what rose quartz says about humans too right?
As if they're *toys* but she just accidentally fell in love with this one.
So according to the book "fusion for beginners and experts," you must agree that you want to fuse." This means that you can't fuse initially without mutual agreement or consent. The dance, whole not necessary, can help two or more people sort of link mindsets, like a conversation to teach a mutual agreement and a synced up mindset (hence why the initial dance to form Opal didn't work, there wasn't enough compromise in the dance itself and it causes them to fall out of sync mentally.)
The fact that Garnet and Amethyst act as though Rose and Greg fused even though they're in separate bodies is because, for all intents and purposes, they did "fuse". That is to say, Garnet describes it perfectly in "Stronger than You." Fusion is, at its core, a conversation. It's a relationship, whether that be platonic, romantic, sexual, or a mix.
Malachite is an interesting exception, and this is a tiny spoiler, but they do want to be fused, even if their reasons aren't in sync. If they genuinely didn't want to be fused anymore, it may have broken malachite back into lapis and jasper, but it also may not have, since malachite is supposed to reflect DV. It could be that one or both want to leave, but feel unable to, and the fusion maintains itself on the mutual false belief that they're trapped by each other. It's unclear.
dancing before fusing is something used as a way to "syncronize" the two gems, making it easier to be a whole, Garnet doesn't need to do that because she's always synchronized with herself(Ruby is always synchronized with Sapphire)
Steven can enter people's heads via a psychic link. He does it a few more times later on.
My personal theory is that dancing is the perfect way in most cases to be synced up with each other and both immersed in the same activity, and thus prompts fusion more easily than other activities

I think dancing to fuse is just a way for the individuals to get close to eachother emotionally and physically. If I recall correctly, the show creator has confirmed that fusion is basically like a relationship, so it would make sense that you need to get close in that way to fuse. We have seen that people can fuse without dancing but I think 1: It's fun and enjoyable to fuse in such a nice and bonding way and 2: That's how fusion was introduced so it makes sense they would show it as a dance to not confuse people. TLDR: You can fuse without dancing, the gems just mostly default to the dancing when they're fusing.
6:30 Dancing is more of a way to synchronize themselves to HELP with the fusion, but it's not necessary. Remember that fusing is about feelings and the relationship someone has (it doesn't necessarily have to be a romantic one, or even positive in Malachite's case). Dancing allows both persons to synchronize with each other and facilitate the fusion. Someone like Garnet doesn't even need the dancing anymore since their relationship is already that close.
Consider the dancing like the training wheels from a bike, it's not KEY for riding the bike, but it really helps if you're not experienced/confident enough in riding the bike.
