When I was in 6th grade a new family moved into my home town, (which was a small town) They had one son, they were with the diplomatic service of China. The son rode the school bus. He was from China. He was treated very harshly on the bus and at school. He was in 10th grade. I felt sorry for him but didn't know what to do. My best friend from the town next to mine came to my house one morning with this young man. We called him Jim O, we had no idea what his real name was. We all became good friends, along with my older brother. We took up the cause of Jim O, and defended him where we could, on the bus, at school and in our town. Jim O was one of the coolest people I have ever met. His stories from China were just the greatest. Easy to be Hard was popular at that time. It was our theme song. Jim O, I loved you as a child, because you were different, I hope life has been good to you. I had a similar experience with a black kid who lived on the street next to our all white town. We were best friends and made it so he could walk around our town with us without fear. His name was James, I loved you James as a child because you were such a good kid. I know your life has been good to you because we are still friends. Easy to be Hard, it's hard to be easy, but so much better.

Indeed, what an incredible voice (melodious, strong, lyrical). The guy can really sing. Like we say in French: "ça nous prend aux tripes." I was born in the late 1960s- a gen X. I remember my parents playing this at home when my brother and I were very young. I will be going to see a French Canadian adaptation of the musical "Hair" in the Quartier Latin in Montréal on Friday. Most of the songs will be sung in French. The critics and the public love it. I can hardly wait to see it.

I was 11 years old in 1969. Yes we had Vietnam. We had ghettos, protest and unrest. But we Cared. When things went terribly wrong we were in this together.i was blessed to be a child on the brink of teen-hood in 1969. Neil Armstrong walked on that white orb
President Kennedy said we'd do that decade. Not because there easy, but because there hard. I gazed in a wonder of possibilities. By 1980 it was changing. 9/11 brought us back for a fleeting moment. Then the gloves came off, an oil war. Breakdown of the family. Then Trump. That blew a hole in the heart of our country. Then the Corona. Now what? It's easy to be hard, it's easy to give in.
Please, for our children, for our children's children.
We have to try to change.
Our humanity depends on it. Change can start- maybe by November 3rd. Let's hope..Peace my friend..TJ STRUSKA

Yeah- I miss hearing that “imperfect” energy one used to hear even in studio cuts. To my taste, that subtle speeding up or “pulling back” emanates(d) feel and soul- the most important element in making music; whether on a professional or amateur level. It is virtually nonexistent in today’s recordings. Take away the element of humanity and what you’re left with? Sonic polyurethane. This song........one of the most plaintive songs from my childhood. Yes. My husband (rest in Peace) adored TDN. Truly a fabulous band. Still listen to this day, all the great old standards! Reminds me of the Vietnam Era! Rest in Peace, Captain FTF!

This song featured in the musical Hair. It worked better with a female voice but the lyrics behind the song are just as important today as it was in the late 60’s. Easy to say no... we should say yes!

Out of all the versions I have heard, I would say Three Dog Night is by far the best. It is an anti-war song about brotherly love and social justice. Considering the war in Vietnam was at its peak at that time and that thousands of (male) soldiers were being sent home in body bags, I think a male voice is better here. I always think of my father- a Vietnam veteran- when I hear this song. Papa, je pense à toi. Tu me manques. 😪

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
    Easy to be hard
    Easy to be cold
How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
    Easy to be proud
    Easy to say no
Especially people who care about strangers
Who care about evil and social injustice
Do you only care about being proud
How about I need a friend, I need a friend
How can people be so heartless
You know I'm hung up on you
    Easy to be proud
    Easy to say no
Especially people who care about strangers
Who care about evil and social injustice
Do you only care about being proud
How about I need a friend, I need a friend
How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be proud, easy to say no
Easy to be gone, easy to say no
Come on, easy to get read
    Easy to say no
But too easy to be cold
    Easy to say no
But too easy to say no

Jay Usher doesn’t matter. The track was laid down and is testament to what Chuck Negron could do....whether lip synched or not.
